$400... That took me by surprise. Why would anyone buy this? I wanted a basic 'phone' phone for my business number a few years back and got a really good one with a nice thin design and similarly modern looking screen for less than $30 new.

I imagine there's probably an Android based OS that you could flash into modern hardware that similarly limits your functionality and probably gives you much more than 2 days operation time. I mean if I left my screen off all day the battery probably wouldn't dip more than 5%. I get 2 days out of my phone already with about 8 hours screen on time.

Some things are made bad, ( or good depending on your point of view, Lol), with SmartPhones that you might not expect.
I used to walk along streets, lanes, and back lanes sometimes at night, sometimes late. Once in a while I saw someone doing something they most likely would have preferred no one to see. You don't need a look-out any more. You see the search light used on an approaching persons SmartPhone or hear the film being watched on it.
Maybe some of the simple phones also have good lights? Mine doesn’t. In Germany we have had for years very simple cheap phones intended for older people. I have one of those, I have no smartphone, but I have lots of PCs and Laptops, just a couple new, most old, some very old, all laying around in different places, sometimes used for specific things, and a few that can be easily carried around occasionally, even on cycle trips. That combination works better for me.
A mobile phone is extremely useful, IMO. A PC or laptop also. Too many things I don’t like about SmartPhones to mention, (and in any case, if I do, the CZcams algorithm comment Police Bot always deletes the post! They're on its unlike list, which it doesn’t like)

I remember when Dave Cullen of the Dave Cullen Show and the Computing Forever channel transitioned back to a dumb phone six or seven years ago. The boost in productivity and creativity is real. I am almost blind and I had to carry around glasses that were equipped with a jewelers loupe just to get a rough idea of what was on the screen. I intuitively memorized how many clicks up and down every available option and each menu wise. I had everyone’s phone number memorized because I couldn’t refer to them. I never once thought of complaining about it, but it was just focused on finding a way around any problem solving challenge. We are truly worse off for smart phones. I am profoundly grateful that someone else is covering this topic. My mother had her last dumb phone for almost 10 years and when they cut it off The 3G towers at the end of February 2022, she was forced into a pretend android phone which can’t do anything as well as the old dumb phone. after going to three AT&T stores and being told that it wasn’t possible to get anything off of her old phone, one employee at a fourth AT&T store knew how to cut down a Sim card and we were able to retain all her contacts and photos. The problem-solving abilities and knowledge of the tech support staff is also hit rock bottom and started to dig.

It's called phones sticking to the patenting scheme of things as long as it uses a Sim or Carrier Aggregated Technologies like CDMA WCDMA GSM even Specific Carrier hard coded/locked Devices, basically anything with calling and SMS retained the Phone title and Computers/Laptops etc meant anything with a separate set of devices for computational tasks Motherboard SMPS CPU Cabinet Monitor Keyboard!
The bigger screen phones got the classification as "Phablet" as in it's a Phone cum Tablet retaining a Sim slot for GSM calling SMS functions, later WiFi Bluetooth added to the Mix with the memory card slot later on! And Because Phones were getting close to Computer level in Future iterations, Smartphone classification began, something like SmartTVs that tracked your every word and Move, but the term phone added in due to Sim Carrier Calling SMS features of Yore!
Hope that helps in some way!

I'm in Canada and a "dumb" phone can still be found on the major carriers for about $79 (Canadian). There are unlocked phones aplenty too. The "Jethro" is neat for older people. The Alcatel Goflip 4 is an old clamshell style - with 4G for connectivity. Nokia 225 4G is another we can get. There are more available in Canada, but these are good starters.
Chris - you took the plunge and I've wanted to for a while. I guess I might have to just do it.

Right there with you, Chris... but I'm finding a couple of things keep me chained to something slightly more than a dumb phone because of the work I do. I also work in IT and would love to know if/how you manage...
    1. 2FA - often requires an app/smartphone (SMS 2FA is becoming more and more rare).
    2. Mobile hotspot - incredibly useful for remote support, troubleshooting and referencing. Maybe mobile wifi hotspot devices?
I've been looking at some of the KaiOS feature phones which is sort of a middle ground - maybe the worst of both worlds?! I'd still have a hotspot, maps, fewer distractions and better battery life.
It's about the trade off between being "always on/distracted", privacy and convenience.
Love where you head's at. Keep up the great work.

110 or 1100? There's one model with no Camera memory card nothing, the kind used on Military Bases. Is that the model you're talking about, which they usually sell in pairs, one white one black. I can't recall the model number correctly, but I'm guessing it's close to what you stated. I loved the 1108 which was nothing but the 1100 with a white backlight screen instead of green. Brilliant battery life and worked like a champ!
Also miss my Sony Ericsson W810i K750i. Those Earphones of J Beat or Bass series was really good, but flimsy AF peeling wires! I went through a Long Line of Handmedowns bought phones etc back in the day, Nokia Alcatel Moto Ericsson Sony Ericsson even les bricks, can't get the batteries or I actually can revive some of them still in some box somewhere to work because I treated them well. There's even a HTC Evo 3D on the Backburner awaiting revival! But they've made sure I don't get Any Spares as they're most of My Evidence Phones Bundle! So tough luck so far with 24x7 365 surveillance and espionage on my a5$! ⚖️😇🙏🏼

Turn off all notifications except sms, access Google Messages from a laptop, the Linux phone with keyboard, or in my case, a Planet Computer Gemeni. Lasts a day or two, fits in a pocket, and I can run my bank app on it. Then whenever I take a break I can get my Gemini from the backpack and do the other stuff, write job sms, or whatever. When I'm finished I turn off my Gemini and put it back in my backpack.

This is why I keep all my old phones lol. Had a habit of breaking a smart phone every 3 months (I'm active) and had to keep reverting to my old flip phone with a VGA camera. Only downside is the older bandwidth channels. I have card phones I paid 10.00 for that have Bluetooth lol, I have flip phones and super old smartphones. All of them have their merits compared to what everyone has settled on as the main phone style, but even with that being said a Moto G Power with a minimal launcher suits me. I need the modern cameras, and plan to Doordash. I can keep track of all my finances in seconds and get some GVMT info (I'm disabled). For some of us smartphones are an aid, but the overall design of smartphones leaves a lot to be desired, especially when all the bells and whistles and algorithms block it' ability to be a reliable phone lol. I have missed more calls because of notification hashups on Do Not Disturb, weird Wifi SMS fuckups and lord knows what else. Smart phones are kinda dumb when it comes to being a phone lol.

Without digital towers we wouldn't have SMS, data connections, media streaming, HD content, and so on. Connection to a digital tower is not "worse", it has to do with wavelength and how waves are transmitted (how waves have longer and shorter frequency). A device has to be closer to a digital tower to have the same voice (and I emphasize that is only voice) quality than using analog signal to an analog tower. And that is the ONLY advantage of the analog signal over the digital signal.
