- In 2020 I switched to a dumb phone (nokia 3310) for 2 months in an attempt to do a digital detox. It taught me a lot of lessons and in this video I share some considerations to have in mind if you are also looking to switch to a dumb phone/flip phone for some time. I go through why it's important to establish your intentions, figuring out what your necessities are, and then we go through eBay and Amazon to see what dumb phones are out there.

Hi Karla! I never liked the smartphone and have always had a flip phone. People look at me funny but I don't care. Can you ever imagine if these people actually were forced to go back to my time of growing up and had to use landline phone attached to the wall with the long cord in the kitchen?
I can imagine it'd be a pretty funny sight đ!! Keep being you :)
@@KarlaHoltman the phone that you chose says "unlocked" on the screen. I think that means that it's pre-owned, right? Ty for making this video. love your channel.
@@cziegle3794 unlocked means you can use the phone with any carrier đ
@@KarlaHoltman okay, thank you.
I miss those times. I'm still getting a dumb phone though. A pc/tablet laptop can do the job a smartphone can anyway. I miss the flip phone. I'm getting my Mom a flip phone too. We'll both be happy.
It's a brilliant experiment. I bought this Nokia 2 years ago and use it as my secondary phone during the school year (I'm a teacher) and as my main phone over the holidays when I can just lay back and enjoy life without the many distractions that arise from having a smartphone in your hand almost 24/7. Love my little red Nokia â„ïž
Biggest reason: lower phone bill. I rather have a $12mo bill than a $80 one.
Other big reason: no social media.
Wow, which phone has a monthly bill that's that cheap?
Im italian and the monthly phone bill i got is 6âŹ, and i was asking myself where in the world phone bills are so expensive. I have unlimited calls and messages and 70gb of internet, why yours are so expensive?
@@kyo.1754 In the US, mobile networks cover a vast area and employ tens of thousands to operate them. Italy and other countries near you are very small by comparison. Glad you have such affordable service there!
In my country we have 2$ monthly for unlimited calls and messages
Interesting topic. It's difficult to stop the mindless scrolling once you get hooked. I tried deleting the worst apps but it didn't really work. I will consider the dumbphone.
Nice vid. Keep up the good work.
let me know if you end up switching and good luck :) !

I miss having those types of phones
This video with all your advice is really a gem! Thank you so much đđ„°
The cheapest thing to do is to delete the apps. Just use the apps for call, text, navigation, and scanning QR codes. Be sure to store all music as mp3s to avoid undesired internet browsing.
You are very well spoken. Yes, I am ordering a dumb phone today. Iâd like to monitor my productivity and focus. Iâm curious to see how my brain adjusts after realizing thereâs no shots of dopamine with a dumb phone lol.
thank you and I hope it's fruitful! Keep me updated on your journey :) !
@@KarlaHoltman thank you, and I definitely will!
I have both a smartphone and dumb phone. Most of the time I go out and about with the dumb phone. Not only is it distraction free, but also more rugged than the smartphone. Seems to be built to last forever and the battery can be easily changed out. Anyone thinking of upgrading to a new phone of any type should get at least a 4G phone. 3G and 2G has been or will be phased out from many U.S. carriers. My dumb phone is a Kai OS Alcatel Smartflip that I bought from Target for $20 last year. It is tied only Tracfone, but the plan I got is only $20 a month with unlimited talk and text + 1GB of data that rolls over every month. I hardly ever use the data even though the Alcatel can access the internet. My smartphone service is through T-Mobile.
ay that's awesome, yeah it seems like 4G is definitely the move, thanks for sharing your experience đ€
yeah i have a old 2007 flip phone and a smart phone
Time wasting is the big thing. Also, who knows what the effects of social media and everything else are long term. Interested to do this. Keep uploading I'm sure you'll be huge one day.
im so interested in the exact same question! Thanks for bringing it up and I appreciate your kind words - stay curious âïž
I have Kyocera Dura XE. It's a great flip phone. I've accidentally sent it through the wash with my laundry (twice), and I've dropped it a ton times. It still works great after about 6 years.
đsounds super durable!!
I really want to try this because I donât want my kids seeing my face constantly in my phone rather than on them. I only need GPS and email for work.
yes!! i love these kinds of vids, please do more
As a blind person I have no intentions on giving up my iPhone. I use it for completing regular every day tasks in addition to what most people use your phones for. But itâs interesting to see people do this.
The funny thing is, some people actually DO perform their job and spend that time on social media at the same time. That is the âeven crazierâ truth of the level of productivity in our society at the present time.
such a good point...
Why not get a $100 Moto G and just use a minimalistic launcher just to be able to function in society, such as navigation apps, using QR codes code, sending RCS texts, and playing locally stored music in the car. You also get a headphone jack and microSD card for local storage expansion. Some flip phones runs Android too, but the form factor of the Moto is familiar and comfortable. Also, the Motos are super durable without a case.
Hay i do the same thing for last 2 years ... Spiritually amazing also it helps me focus on my life
I've been looking around for info on dumb phones when I found your videos. I located what I think is the perfect phone for me that even I can use as a hotspot for my iPad... So, I purchased the Nokia 6300 4G unlocked last night on Amazon. We'll see how that goes.
Good luck with your endeavors in college.
super cool, good luck and I hope you enjoy the experience đ„
I love your videos⊠đđ»đđ»
I been using a 4G flip phone for three years going into my four years, I love using my laptop, tablet, physical gps, digital cameras for street photography with a mp3 player with pirated songs on it and I'm happy.
I just deleted all social media and disabled some other apps on Pixel phone and kept tools apps only thus I still have a good camera for family moments, navigation, calendar, notes and banking.
I am still using a feature / dumb phone. I have a smartphone, but i only use it for whatsapp for work. I don't even receive line calls from the smartphone, only calls through whatsapp. It will be untrue to say that we can live without smartphones. Now through work and to make some electronic cash payments, scan QR codes for entry to certain places due to COVID-19, few can live without a smartphone. Anyway my main phone is still my dumb or feature phone. I call and text with it, receive authentication pin via text messages to log in to sites. Its so convenient for me. I am always checking our feature phones, and with the come back of Nokia (through HMD), it really bring back those Nokia days.
I recently got an old iPhone SE where I can carry on day to day basic stuffs. No social media or anything other than basic stuffs
I have the 3310. Itâs like getting your life back ditching âsmartâ phones
Nokia 5310 in white I have been using for around 6 months. Now not perfect as at home, I can still mindless watching on my laptop. Going out, nokia, work nokia. Smartphone I feel still needed occasionally or a tablet for those apps. Overall, great, self regulation still needed. Try put on the radio, read a book by actually sitting and doing this. Use some apps as energy more used restricting rather than actually using the app.
Great Video.. long way to go.. !!
Thanks a ton
As far as I know you can take any smart phone and make it dumb and still have a great phone with a QWERTY keyboard and great camera. And once you shut off all the extras the battery lasts 3 times longer.
I had a phone đ± like that around 20 years ago. Now I use a Samsung galaxy s21 plus.
For me it was easier to just switch to a smartphone (for the look) that runs a system that makes it a dumb phone. I have the gabb phone. I like that i dont look like an oddball walking around with a flip phone. It has no internet & no app store. I recommend sunbeam wireless if you want a flip phone that has voice to text instead of texting t9 style. On my tablet i have my social media apps, but i have them restricted to 10 minutes a day.
that's such an interesting approach. I honestly had never heard of any of these things until you brought them up đ
Hello there! I just want a dumb phone for phone calls. Interesting about the need for a sim card adapter. That sucks. I WISH companies make better feature phones (dumb phones).
I like having an iPhone with only the basic apps aka not having an account. Phone, messaging, maps, browser covers it.
I have the 2G version of this phone I prefer it to your one as it has notes for my shopping list.
oooo that's a pro tip
35h a week is a whole full time week of work here in france and for free damn
I haven't left the house this entire year... not because of covid but because I'm super addicted to yt and I'm lazy.
how much do u pay to have a nokia with t mobile? im looking to switch and i have t mobile but curious how much bill would be?
I did it a different way, i setup my iphone to only allow the basic functions i needed and then got someone i trust to set a password that only they know so i cannot add or change anything. It works quite well and saves you having to buy another phone.
hey! how did you do that? i think iâd like to try it out too
@@xu.ruiiee First uninstall every app that can be removed. Then go to Settings>Screen Time>Content & Privacy Restrictions>Allowed Apps and disable the pre-installed apps you don't want. Then go to iTunes and App Store Purchases and disable installing apps. Then find someone you trust to set a screentime passcode so the settings cannot be changed back. Your iphone will now only have basic functions.
@@leemanwrong okay, thank you so much!
i love the video đ
thank you đ„ș
Unfortunately, a lot of those Nokia phones on eBay are knockoffs. That's my dream phone... except I'd like it in 4G, which they don't have for the US. :(
that's so scammy, thanks for brining it up -- hopefully it'll have people triple check for what they're paying for!
This is a good idea. However, most of the people use fb messenger and none of my friends text to communicate.
I change from a whip down to a smartphone because I always have trouble keeping a smartphone I always ran across problems with smart phone so I change to a flip phone and not only that I cannot afford a smart phone
just bought the Cat s22 flip phone since it runs Android Go which i need for google voice.
Is 3310 3g good or 4g? Cause 4g can hotspot
Title Topic not covered.
Even your Nokia phone looks dope and classic better than smartphone.
haha thankkksss
Smartphone for daily use(socmed, cam, rec, games, etc)
Dumbphone for business transactions/important calls.
nokia 2720 flip
I wanna try this lolâŠ..
I would like to do that but im not sure because Im a marketing manager and I have to check Social media on my phone . Is there a work around this?
So thereâs a chrome extension that lets you upload and check stuff on your laptop/desktop computer. Iâve used it for instagram but twitter and other social media platforms (not sure about tiktok) have a desktop version. Have you given that a try?
@@KarlaHoltman I check instagram and twitter but i can simply do that on my laptop and thats what iââll do . Thx Karla
I want a "brick" phone (dumb phone) again. I don't do much on my smartphone except watch You Tube. Since a dumb phone has You Tube, FB and Whatsapp, we can ask for directions, (which I still do LOL), instead of using Maps, a dumb phone might be a great idea. I7m researching now on a suitable dumb phone.
I've recently tested a few, I've used the Nokia 2780 Flip which was great but didn't have WhatsApp so that was a challenge for me and I also tried the Nokia 6300. I thought that the 6300 was great because it had WhatsApp but the 2780 was better overall. So if WhatsApp isn't a big deal for you, I'd try the 2780. Just be careful because they're not as strong as they used to be. I had to send my 2780 back to Nokia because it broke. Luckily they sent back a new one since they have a 1 year guarantee.
I changed to a flip phone from a smart phone
Smart and absolutely gorgeous đ
Are you still using the Nokia
Did you stick with it? What are you using these days?
Nah, I use an iPhone - but this experience for me was planned to be temporary to help decrease overall screen time
Nobody think how divers was Phone mobile area
I fell asleep by the background music đ
I usually leave my phone when I go take a walk or something and I have my iPod touch just for my podcast my music then at home I got the Apple TV in I have an iPhone but Iâm trying to get rid of it I wanna light phone 2 Thatâs my main goal this month to get and Iâm also trying to get a iPad Air so I can still use stuff but I donât have to use my phone for anything or you know leaving home so I donât have to use all this crap
that's a solid idea tbh it reminds of what I heard recently about Ed Sheeran -- apparently he ditched his phone and uses an iPad for all of his work stuff as well.
So dumb idea...just selll all that apple shitt ..and buy dumbphone and laptop dont make reasons just to use dumbphones
Hi !! Was it possible to have Messenger on your 3310 Nokia phone ?
I only was able to use the standard messaging app, so I couldn't download whatsapp or fb messenger unfortunately. That was a struggle so if you find a phone that lets you download this pls let me know :)
@@KarlaHoltman ok thank you for your answer :)
