  • I have gone the last 16 months without a smartphone. It has been amazing. There are definitely downsides (no GPS, it takes longer to text, etc.). However, I have found that my life is much better. Here are the 7 benefits that I have found to having a flip phone instead of a smartphone.

Honestly, I cut down my standard size Sim card to use in this phone, and that's worked fine for the last several years. In any case you can either try to align the nano in the slot til it sits in a spot that works, or you could get a nano to micro Sim adapter. It's like a little plastic housing in the shape of micro that holds nano. That's my recommendation if you really want this phone and wanna use nano Sim. I just recently bought a Nokia 110 4g 2023 as a replacement for my old Nokia 130(2017) , a great 2g phone with Bluetooth a2dp 3.0, great Bluetooth connection, not so great battery life (1020 mah) due to the Bluetooth 3.0 , an outdated protocol which uses battery a lot when earbuds are connected to it.
With the Nokia 110 4g 2023, there are newer shenanigans like Bluetooth 5.0 so I don't have to carry my hefty smartphone outdoor for music streaming purpose, a bigger 1450 mah battery, a LTE network and a browser, it's a bit usable but for the price, I'm getting what I'm looking for. I am 37 so I have watched all this unfold and evolve. I have never been worried about having a certain phone. I have always used budget service providers where possible then that turned into me just using WiFi instead of activating a data plan. This summer I broke a nice smart phone I bought from a friend and that was in July. I never replaced the phone. I don't even use a phone at all now. I just use a tablet or laptop when home. I don't habe a big social life anymore so its easier. I see the problem on a big picture scale. Seeing the results of this phenomenon makes me think that it's something being done intentionally by people who want control. Its hard for me to believe that us being divided via overconnectivity while exposing our thoughts and locations constantly is purely a result of a natural phenomenon.

The sharing of stories reminds me of a time I was waiting for a rental car. It was during the height of the pandemic, and as a precaution we were outside, social distancing and wearing masks and everything. There were four or five of us, and we had to wait for about two hours. Honestly, we wished it would have taken longer. The conversations we had were fascinating. Turns out one guy was managing the finances for this sweet little old lady who had recently passed away--and another guy was helping her out around the house, doing the mowing and caring for her hedges and the like. Both were vets, one a Marine during the Afghanistan war and the other from the first Iraq war if I recall right. We discussed lawn care, dogs, this lady's life (which was fascinating in its own right), various types of financial assets (it was more interesting than it sounds), cars, war stories--that sort of good, rambling discussion that you'd have sitting around the fire with good friends.

Very cool stuff, and always nice to find people from the Bay Area here (I’m a St. Pete guy, but lived in Tampa and Clearwater). I’ve been working on unplugging for a while and haven’t made the jump back to an old T9 flip phone but I’ve taken all 3rd party apps, email, and notifications off my phone to make it as “non-smart” as possible. It really does help, and when I come home from work, the phone goes on my desk, the smart watch comes off, and my AirPods go in my pocket. It’s been really great for my mental health and for my family time.

@@ColinCasperLMHC hi Colin,so far it's been very positive 🙂 Because I'm not expecting anything from my basic phone ,I feel less need to even carry one.
I now just use text and calls, when I first dropped off things like WhatsApp,it took folk a while to realise you were not on there anymore, but anyone who genuinely wants to keep in touch will do , it's a good way of also filtering so called fake friends .
Having said all that , I wasn't on any social media, I had CZcams on there which I didn't see as social media really , I was using that as a learning tool. , I miss that but can use my tablet to do that at home .
I have no desire currently to go back to a smart phone,I find life more peaceful without one ,I'm not constantly distracted anymore,I feel more productive at work
When I come home and I hear my wife's phone pinging off with notification after notification, I now see just how distracting and addictive it was , I challenged her to give it up for a week ,just so she too could see how peaceful life is without it , or at least log out of everything and turn off data and WiFi for a week..I know she will see a difference but folk seem worried about missing out on things , which normally only turn out to be rubbish anyway, so I will try and persuade her.
Also ,like I said ,I have less desire to now carry a phone , I have carried one for most of the time since first having one and I thought to myself, how many times has anyone had to call me in an emergency or me use one in an emergency, the answer was zero!
We become programmed to think something terrible will happen if I don't carry it. We managed before them and we used to farm all over back then
So in a nutshell I'm more relaxed, less distracted,no longer addicted, less anxious (waiting for phone to do something) best thing I've done by far , will be continuing, ..
Remember how brilliant sms was when first came out in 90s ?well it still is.
Many thanks for the Vid to get me started 🙂

I started with smartphones years back because the flip phones of the day weren't loud enough be heard in a big truck. (Moving oil rigs, not highway hauling). The smartphones were always a challenge as they made it harder and harder to use a a communications device. It got to the point that it took longer to place the call than the call itself took. I am delighted to see flip phones returning, and look forward to the day when I get rid if the horrid "smartphones" forever.

I've had a flip phone now for 1 year. I agree with all the benefits you mentioned. I also found I shop less now. One because I don't scroll and shop. Second, I don't have a ton of apps for rewards programs and incentives to order on their app for specials. I find now I buy something when I realize I need something. I'm a LCSW and work in mental health as well. Loved your video.

Switched to a flip phone mid 2019. Haven't gone back since. I mean I use an iphone at the house over wifi for some apps like Signal and maybe Alexa stuff. But I've been done with social media forever and how things are going, I don't miss one bit of it. It's a drug but one of the worst kinds...the kind that makes you unhappy. People that keep texting me whether work or family, I pick up the phone and speak to them if it's going to be a conversation. SMS is for SHORT Messages, not lenghty convos in the first place.

Watching, analyzing, re-watching and analyzing a movie called "My Dinner with Andre" changed my life. You could easily watch it, and only take away "Boomers hate technology" and keep living the way you did. For me, it came into my life at the correct time, and I'm happy to say that it has made me think about every action I take during the day. It doesn't make me get rid of all my comforts, rather, it makes me choose which comforts I could live without.
I'm not on social media and I do not let algorithms decide what kind of content I want to watch. I am here watching this video, because I've decided to change to a flip phone after my old one dies out (7 year old phone by now, still works but is showing signs of aging). I only watch videos that I myself thought to watch, and those videos will end up meaning more to me.
Not to say that I do not indulge in watching videos about things I don't care about (drama, essays about subjects I don't know about), but being aware of myself, and knowing what I want, makes the difference. That movie made me find out why it's important to think about what you'd like to be doing in 5 years. It's not about career growth, money, or accomplishments. It's about developing, and reflecting upon yourself. Life is what you make it. The constant comfort of smartphones, social media, and most of all, COMFORT, makes us forget to be ourselves. Great video. I wish everyone a great journey of learning to be human again.

So the last few days I've just treated my smartphone like an old landline phone. Meaning I leave the phone at home and only use it for phone calls and voicemail. I've adjusted pretty easy so far and don't really miss it. Maybe sometime next week or so I'll buy a flip phone but currently I'm not having a problem going back to living life like it's the 1990s again.
However it's really odd and disturbing to see everyone around me staring at little rectangular objects in there hands all the time. Even while walking and occasionally while driving.

And you must bee Islamic. Or moist with your stupid thoughts bloody sucker. Just wait till someone pops you in the face for taking your own sweet time pulling out your stupid dumb phone and being inconvenient to them. Nobody in their mind these days wants to wait on someone that doesn’t have a smart phone. You can’t legislate society these days cause you know that everyone pretty much has a smart phone you dimwit I would love to throw all those bloody stupid flip phones in the trash actually. They are nothing but a burden and make your life a living hell!!! Yea you just wait till yo hare standing in line and someone pops you cause you are taking to long with your stupid ass dumb phone. Bee smart not stupid!! Work smarter not bee a burden. You will remember these words when yo hare standing in line at the post office and the postal service guy gets pissed off with you cause you can’t scan the QR code. You have to demand a copy of your little code that you could have just done on your smart phone but knowing stupid idiots like you wanting to try and prove that you are so better than everyone else is not going to work jack ass!!!! Only a moron would do stuff like this cause society is smart. We are not going back. We are progressing in society not regressing. So why don’t you shove that dumb phone in your squeaky little ass and go back to your ommish country. And hide yourself for ever with your horse and buggy ommish boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only downside is that people nowadays expect everything to be done in a couple of minutes. Without a smartphone this isn’t the case, you’ll prob get late to your job cuz you don’t have uber or like he said u forget to reply to this work related thing. But that way you’ll experience way more things like u would use public transportation and interact with people more often and people will see you as a bit careless and maybe a bit jealous bc they aren’t in control of their own life as u.
