I'm gonna be honest, and I am sure the producers and writers knew what they were doing then. But today, despite their gloomy outward appearance (Though Morticia is hot as) The Addams are very optimistic and positive and never think the worse of people. Phone is hang up, they think an accidental disconnection took place. Boy a lot of us could use this sort of positive outlook in this day and age.
I think that was the point - the Addams are nice, but have different aesthetic sense and other people cannot look past their appearance (or rather, the appearance of their house) and their hobbies.
That’s sort of the joke- they’re extremely eccentric, but they are the nicest people you could ever meet. During the very conformist mid-20th century, this was considered a shocking contrast.

It's because Melancholia is related to Morticia who has all kinds of weird cousins & relatives, apart from Her normal Mother & Sister. But, it makes sense if She's Gomez's perfect match & they're supposed to be the dark weird family they are. Though, they're being normal in their eyes.

Morticia to me was so amazing. It was almost like she glides across a room in that dress. Carolyn Jones. Never forgotten. Never duplicated

He wasn't supposed to talk at all but once be ad-libbed "you rang" during rehearsal, producers fell in love with the voice and gave him several speaking parts in each episode!

That Fred guy at the end is one of my favorite people from the show: He turns out to not only still want Melancholia, he was never going to leave her in the first place.

John Astin thoroughly pours himself into his role. Nothing forced at all, simply natural.

I think Carolyn is just so beautiful and little less known fact is that John was in love with carolyn and actually visited her before her death to tell this but by the time he did she was too ill and had already remarried . I think it’s unknown if Carolyn felt the same but John said in a documentary there chemistry was undeniable.
Come to think of it when was John married to the late Patty Duke? Odd no one ever brings her up any of the comments section in the videos I've seen in so many years... yes I know this is The Addams Family but it was Morticia and Gomez.. Morticia and Gomez.etc. I heard John was pretty abusive, psychologically to Patty which made this gifted actress messed her up throughout her life.. I wonder why nobody ever brings her up in these Addams Family comment sections..Was she not worth mention in any of the of the dialogue we're conducting here... I miss her too along with Carolyn

If they had video/audio-editting technologies back in the 60s like they do now and they were somehow able to swap the way Melancholia sounded at 11:40 for the way she sounded at 11:43, then the "What's so funny?" line would be a lot more believable IMHO. She definitely sounded like she was crying at 11:40

No, grandmama isn't related to Fester, she is Gomez's mother and Fester is the older brother to Morticia's mother, having helped raise her, but to the addams there is hardly a need to include greats or second, third, etc. In the titles of their family, family is family for them, no matter how distant

It's a shame this series didn't get more seasons, it has definately aged well and beloved by many.

The Casting was Perfect .. These People will always be the Real Addams Family .. Sheer Genius
The Addams Family was one of the most perfectly cast shows ever, in my opinion.
The fact that Carolyn loved this character so much she kept everything. Her dress, wig, her wicker chair… It was always kept in her room until the day she died. I wish her and John could have been together outside the show, but she died knowing how he really felt all long and he found that out too. I love that they got their backstage kisses when the 60’s era shows wouldnt allow people to kiss on the lips in television. Doesn't sense since they allowed John to kiss her whole body… but a peck on the lips is out of the question. 🙄 They were too sweet and their affection on camera was groundbreaking during this time period.
I love how hospitable the Addams are, yes they are a little off but they are so nice to everyone and its truly so sweet

I’ve been LOVING the fact that MGM has been posting these! They’ve been a lot of fun to watch. This one in particular was fun because the entire opening credits were included with the theme song. Morticia was such a stunning woman. Absolutely beautiful.

Lee Goodman (Mr Harvey) has a great sense of comedic timing here! Great reactions and delivery!
When watching this series. Watch as though you are the director. The execution of the lines, how the emotions are played. How the scene is shot. Then you will see, that this a true comedy classic.
This episode is particularly beautifully acted and scripted, and the comedy timing is just perfect
You can see this especially when Carolyn Jones is playing the dual roles of Morticia and Ophelia, and the shots alternate between Carolyn-as-Tish, Carolyn-as-Ophelia, and the two doubles. Really smooth blocking and editing.

Interestingly, the whole metal rock music movement, with it's macabre and dark reputation, is mostly inhabited by genuinely wonderful people with strong ethical values, friendly demeaners, who are tolerant and thoughtful of others. I wonder if it's the "Addams Family Effect"?
