    Dude... You just saved my weekend, just picked up a 70hp evinrude and I could never get the fuel bulb to harden up, just a rainbow in the water, Smokey as all hell and no power. Just checked and this was the issue, cheers to a fun filled weekend!!

    Great information here. I have a 1993 Johnson 2 stroke with heavy exhaust cloud at idle (rough idle). removed the spark plugs and air housing...found excessive oil saturating the carb ports. Plugs were then pulled and oil fouled. Found the fuel supply line outside the motor cover collapsed. I changed all fuel hoses. Will be testing it this weekend, hopefully will correct this issue. Thanks again for the vid!

    The symptoms you described are exactly what I was experiencing with my '88 50hp Evin with VRO. I got carb rebuild kits from Crowley.
    Rebuilt the 2 carbs and resecured all the hose connections, about 12 places.. (I used metallic worm gear type where possible and I did use some new zip ties on the smaller dia hoses...really tightened them. I couldnt find the squeeze ratchet type you described. Whole job about 10 hrs, and you were right!!!! Engine runs like a champ! what a difference!
    Bless you!!

    My Seloc manual mentioned the o ring in the quick disconnect fuel fitting goes bad after a while.
    So i reworked my fuel line from tank to engine...replaced primer bulb with a new one, cut off the quick disconnect fitting and did a direct connection using a 2 tang brass coupling..tight hose clamps thru out. This made a huge difference.
    Moral of the story is...VRO's are not evil...just gotta have zero air leaks in the fuel line to get correct mixture. Why do you need the quick disconnect anyway?

    when I press on the button it stops the motor noise. I changed one relay a month ago, thought it was the same problem, so I changed the second relay but it did not help.. I'm a chick and had to get in the water to try and raise the motor...luckily a nice man jumped in the water with me at the ramp and we were able to unscrew pressure screw and at least get me out of the water.

    i have a johnson 225HP (year 93) and i disabled the VRO oil part, beacue there is a problem that it doesnt work... o i just mix the oil with the fuel, witht he proportion of 40:1, of course it smokes, but knowing that its smoking i know its lubricating well and the motor wont blow :)

    Hello TMD. First, let me say, I was sad when you pretty much stopped making videos. I know you're talented/experienced and I really expected your channel to grow. Well, I'm glad you're back...just subscribed, again.
    Would the condition you described in this video cause the low fuel pressure warning to go off? My 1998 Ocean Pro 150 runs like a scalded ape, but the horn has gone off intermittently for the past 10 years and the past few years has gone off more frequently. I have about 700 hrs. on the engine, rebuilt the carbs a few years ago and the engine always starts and runs. It is oretty smokey, though. I was considering a VRO rebuild until I saw this video. Thanks for your time and any help you can give. Cheers!

      You may have a fuel restriction. Check for pinched hoses or an air leak prior to the VRO.

      @@TheMarineDoctor Thanks for the reply. I replaced the fuel pressure sensor. I also eliminated the fuel tank and lines,as I ran a 5 gallon tank right into the primer bulb line....same warning.

    The Johnson VRO Oil pump mix system is a complete garbage. I pulled my 92 Johnson VRO pump out and mix 50:1 directly to fuel tank. My engine runs super clean now, very little smoke. My spark plug doesn't get excessive oil. I also have a 1989 90hp Yamaha 2 stroke with a similar idea like the Johnson VRO. But Yamaha has a little oil tank inside, you fill it and the oil mixes itself. And NEVER ever had problems like the Johnson VRO system.But....regardless they are old. I am going to replace it with 4 stroke sometime in the near future.

    I have a 1990 70 hp Johnson. It now runs good slow. However when I open it up it will run about 100 yards and alarm goes off and I lose all power. The motor still runs, I drop anchor and wait 15 to 30 minutes or till I get no alarm, start it and runs good till I do it again. I usually don't open it up and I just putt around. What is the problem here?

    Thank you for this video! Pixels or engine running its very helpful! Thank you! Got a question, I have a 1998 Evinrude 3 cyl with a VRO, I'm finding that gas is back filling into the oil tank which is affecting my ratio, I also find that I have a non vented fuel cell which is building pressure, would this buildup of pressure in the tank be enough to cause the gas to pass through both fuel pumps, the VRO and backfill the oil tank? What if the fuel primer solenoid was left in the prime position?

    • @TheMarineDoctor
      @TheMarineDoctor  Před 5 lety

      The check valve is bad in the vro. Works as a one way valve. Try drilling a hole in the cap to vent the vro tank.

    • @swamprat2818
      @swamprat2818 Před 5 lety

      @@TheMarineDoctor Want to be sure I follow you, the portable gas tank is building pressure not the oil tank but I will try venting both. So this valve is no longer available per 2 different places on line, if I cant find this check valve then my only solution would be to remove the VRO and mix oil in the tank?

    • @TheMarineDoctor
      @TheMarineDoctor  Před 5 lety

      The fuel tank pressurizes then cools and creates a vacuum. Disconnect the fuel line and vent the VRO tanks cap.

    My boat recently broke down on the water and we had to be towed. The fuel bulb was cracked so we bypassed the bulb straight to the engine. We were able to get her started, but as we ran the boat it started losing power in spurts eventually died on us. We were able to get it started 1 more time in which smoke started shooting out of the back, we shut it down and were unable to start it after that. We had to be towed to the docks. Cleaned the carburetors and the engine started. When I cleaned the carbs they were full of fuel and oil mixture which seemed to contain more oil than fuel. Other than that they were pretty clean i side. After putting the carbs back on and starting the engine, unfortunately there is still allot of smoke coming out of the back. I ran the engine for a couple of minutes, off and on for a total of around 4-6 minutes. I have a 1996 Johnson 2 stroke outboard with a seperate VRO Oil tank. Do you know what the problem may be that is causing all the smoke. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    • @vaun101
      @vaun101 Před 7 lety +1

      A common problem is if there is a fuel line fault or restriction more oil will be pumped into the carbs as there is a constant oil to fuel mix going on that works off the fuel flow rate so - a fuel restriction/air leak will still have the VRO pump supplying the amount of oil to the fuel that 'should' be getting pumped to the motor. If there is less fuel, oil will still be supplied but at a higher oil to fuel rate, hence looks like over oiling, what's actually happening is under-fueling... Check fuel lines and system for restrictions or air leaks.
      Also not a good idea to disconnect the fuel line to 'run dry' the engine as oil will saturate the carbs for the same 'under-fueling' reason.
      Best to drain the carbs via the drain screws, use fuel stabilizer, or run the motor every few weeks for 15-20 minutes...

    Seems to me 35 to 1 is going to smoke like crazy. Dosn't that Variable Ratio Oiler deliver 50 to 1 at Wide Open Throttle, and LESS oil at lower RPM? Good concept though, especially since fuel consumption is highest at WOT and most operators like to run at lower speeds. Personally I have bypassed VRO oiler and run at 50:1 all the time because the consequences of under-oiling are so catastrophic.

    i dont trust those vro pumps,ive had 1 buddys there motors blow up at full throttle cuse the it stoped pumping oil...ive have disconnected the vro pump on both my motors & run 40;1 oil premix stright in the gas tank.i put a lil more oil in the fuel then 50;1 ive had these motor for 15yrs & they still have like new compresstion in all cylinders...with premix i know the oil is in the gas & getting to the motor..simplicity is the best way to go in the ocean.
