Chicago Transit Authority AKA Chicago was a force in their early years. Thank you for this one. I still remember the excitement of dropping the needle on the 1st song and knowing it was a double album left to listen to.
No one could shred a guitar like Terry Kath. He was a beast on those filthy licks. Way ahead of his time. No one could ever come close.

Kath playing this glorious and filthy licks and Cetera’s bass work here is insane. “South California Purples” and “Introduction” i recommend it with all my soul.
Also the song Listen has every member in full flight throughout. Hell every song on their first 4 albums are recommended.

‘Questions 67 and 68’. Chicago is the total package when it comes to perfect music, and ‘Leonid and Friends’ bring it back in the studio with perfection....and they don’t even speak English
I bought this album with my lawn mowing money when it first came out. I’ve been a Chicago fan ever since. I get goose bumps even to this day when listening to their music. They are the greatest musically talented band in history. Thanks to modern technology we can listen to them forever. It’s the only band that I have never gotten sick of and had to put aside for a break.
I love watching watching young people listen to the music that I started listening to over 50 years ago!! I just browsed through over 160 comments and can't believe that there are not raving reviews of Peter Cetera's bass playing.. As much as Peter has been maligned as having been maligned as the ballad singer who destroyed Chicago, almost no attention is given to the way he played the bass so masterfully in Chicago's early years. Bravo Peter - job well done!!!

I grew up loving chicago.......you have to listen to ALL of chicago Transit Authority---chicago 1....and Chicago II.......ALL of it.....Terry Kath lead Chicago is one of the greatest music during the 70s.......AND some of the greatest anti war music............You are hitting what the 60s and 70s were.......
I would also recommend Chicago III from 1971.
Imagine the balls of a band releasing consecutive double albums a year apart...as debuts!

Terry Kath and Frank Zappa were my biggest guitar influences growing up. Chicago's first three albums and Zappa's "Overnite Sensation" and "Apostrophe" albums were my textbooks for developing my guitar playing and singing. There were other influential musicians and bands such as Deep Purple, ZZ Top and Grand Funk Railroad, but Chicago and Zappa were always at the top of the heap for me. I cried bitter tears when Terry Kath died; I was 19 years old at the time. The only other musician whose death actually made me cry was Stevie Ray Vaughan. My first band, back in high school, used to win all the talent shows playing Chicago tunes such as Introduction and In the Country, and over the years we worked up and performed 16 Chicago songs along with all the other bands we covered. The late 1960s through the mid-1970s was the most transformational era of rock music, and the influence of the music at that time can be heard in the sounds of thousands of artists who followed them.
Terry Kath was around until Chicago XI when he passed. May I suggest "It Better End Soon" all 4 movements next off of Chicago II.

Nope, never heard this, but that funk beat is awesome!! What a groove! I am getting the feeling this is an instrumental...3 mins. in. Okay, there ARE words LOL!! But MAN what an opening jam!! This was released in 1969 so metal really hadn't quite come out yet but the beginnings were there. Danny Seraphine on drums was really kickin' it! What a great tune and reaction!!

ZenClover84 this wasn't played on the radio and i grew up in the Chicago area. I heard it because a friend had the album.
@@cesarnarro6013 A lot of the time an artists best songs are the ones that never get played on the radio.This is probably the main reason I stopped listening to mainstream radio years ago.I'm about deep cuts.
@@TRANZEURO when I used to be an interstate driver always had Sirius radio on and there deep cuts station on their rock channels was my go to station followed by the outlaw country station.

This song is incredible! The horns, the killer bass, drums, and especially Terry Kath. Starting at 7:30 we either have: 1.Two Terry Kaths sound on sound. or 2. Two guitars. Probably solution 1. I never heard this song until recently even though I was a huge Chicago fan since way back there in the 70's. Thanks for the video!

WOW! I had a blast just watching your reaction as the song went on. I listen to this song every time I put on my Chicago four disc collection. Funny thing about this collection. The first two disc's are full of incredible songs, one right after the other. i can listen to the first two over and over. But the third and forth CD's, even though they have popular and successful songs, I only listen to one or two songs on those cd's. I much prefer the early Chicago. And FYI the official name of the Band is The Chicago Transit Authority, but people started calling them by Chicago, so that's what they started going by. Great reaction.
Actually the real Chicago Transit Authority (Chicago's public transportation bureau) tried to sue, so to avoid they agreed to change their name.
Best first album of any band EVER Love how Terry, Cetera and Danny are SO in the pocket.
Heavy Metal as a genre came about a bit after the release of this song. Steppenwolf coined the name when they included the line 'heavy metal thunder' in their song 'Born To Be Wild'. Indeed; this could be considered Heavy Metal, but also any other genre like funk; however when you say that 'Chicago' is your best Heavy Metal act, people would look rather strange at you:). This is a similar reaction to me when I first heard the song as a 13 year old back in 1969

I'm so glad you enjoyed this great song from this phenomenal album. Kath's guitar playing from about 3:30 to 3:55 always struck me as sitar-like once again demonstrating his versatility. Someone else suggested listening to "Introduction" from the same album. Excellent idea, but for a treat, also listen to the version from Leonid & Friends.
I luuuv seeing youngster feel this uniquely classic soulful jazzy improvisational!? Masterpiece .. the whole album is stunning (except for the free form guitar track - like we needed any more evidence of his virtuosity!)
FREAKING EPIC ... This is their 1969 debut album!!!!!!! So I was 13 my FIRST listen was hanging out with my horn student classmate/best friend basement and were BLOWN AWAY. Raised on Jazz & Funk They immediately became our favorite rock band after Hendrix before I discovered PROG 2 years later!
I do remember the 1st time with this album...a miraculous gift !!

This is an overlooked gem from this album. There was no "before Terry Kath." For your information he was with the band from the beginning until his death in 1978.

Chicago II Album is a great one to listen to from beginning to end. Side 4 It Better End Soon medley and ending with Where Do We Go From Here is very fitting for where we’re at in 2020.

Well, I guess if you like this one, Liberation from the same album would be your next stop. It's a live recording and while not, strictly speaking, a companion piece, there's definitely some consanguinity with Poem 58 . Best. Leo.
Love the channel Daniel! Keep doing what you are doing. I’m not sure if you ever intend to hit up some blues but there are so many great blues guitarists. Don’’t worry,, you can still be into prog rock as I am (Yes, Genesis. Jethro Tull.....). But I digress. One of my favorite blues guitarists is the late Stevie Ray Vaughan. He is best heard live. One of his best songs to watch/listen to is “Texas Flood....Live at The El Mocambo”. It is life changing!
That entire album is off the charts. Kath goes off. A classic.

It's off the 1st album. So, of course, Terry Kath would be on it. And, all you have to do is here the opening guitar to know it's him. Easily one of the most underrated guitarist ever.

This form Chicago Transit authority, there 1st LP. Terry Kath was kicking ass. This a love song as a metaphor for how many felt about country during the VN war and disappointment with authority and leadership. Note: the change denotes danger! The democratic convention had just happened in 68 which turned into a police riot!
Takes your breath away doesn’t it, one of a kind band
Late to comments but the intent of this intro Jam was to to highlight the core 3-piece strength of the classic Chicago lineup against its peers of the time - Cream, The Experience, & others... Yes, Kath takes the well deserved spotlight, but Cetera was a critically underappreciated bassist and Seraphine was highly lauded by all the old big band jazz drummers of that time. Adding the horns, organ and vocals to the final part of the song truly demonstrated the product was better than the sum of its parts....
Terry Kath was a master at distortion. Glad you got an education from it. I miss the '60's and '70's.
The first time I heard these guys was just after their first album came out. They were the warm-up act for Jimi Hendrix-‘69 at The Forum in LA. We heard a lot of the songs from the album - I’m a Man, Questions 67 and 68 and this one (I think, it was this song - a gloriously, mostly instrumental jam, anyway). We’d never heard of them before and were blown away and instant fans.

On this album Daniel I'd recommend Introduction which is the first song on the album appropriately. It's fantastic!

I can’t stand the sappy post Terry Kath era, but this early stuff is great.
25 or 64 is one of the best songs of all time IMO. Admittedly this is on a different album.
I can’t imagine it escaping your notice though, there’s been a lot of exposure on competing channels. If it has somehow, you should make hearing it a priority LOL. For your own sake. Don’t over analyze the lyrics on that one though, it’s actually a pretty simple story.
