  • Today we are visiting a new country and I am so excited because it has been a while since I have posted a video in an Arabic speaking country. In this video, my bro aka the British legend @harryjaggardtravel and I arrive to Tunis and head out on our first day in the city. We share with you what it was like to arrive there on a very unique day and how the city was during that time. We end up meeting a multi-lingual local who showed us around the souqs and lured us to his friend's shop which was a fun experience. Also, my Arabic has improved quite a bit so you will see that in this video, of course with subtitles for everyone that does not understand Arabic!

    Welcome to Tunisia! Next time, it's advisable to be accompanied by a local resident to avoid scammers. Tunisians are generally warm and welcoming, but when it comes to money, some individuals can exhibit opportunistic and greedy behavior, particularly towards tourists. This is somewhat of a cultural trait, in fact.

  • @rziguiaymen7519
    @rziguiaymen7519 Před 8 měsíci +176

    Just wanted to clarify some points that maybe slipped without a lot of understanding, I am Tunisian and I can explain these:
    When you asked that guy if he speaks Indian and he replied this is hindi while pointing to the Cactus, that's because in Tunisia we call Cactus "Hindi" which is literally in arabic language translated as "indian" idk why we call it like that hahaha
    Also, when he said he's from "Tataouine" he wasn't kidding, there's a city in the south of Tunisia called "Tataouine" and they filmed some scenes from Star wars in that city, so basically the name of planet of Tatwin is taken from an existing tunisian city.
    You can know how many families are living in the house by seeing the door, if the door has two hands it means two family are living (or used to live there) however 1 hand means just one family is living there.
    He pointed out to the Jasmin flower drawn on the wall because Jasmin flower is the national flower of Tunisia and it is a cultural thing in Tunisian society. (as well as Olives)
    25th of July is a national holiday for the republic of Tunisia that's why a lot of shops are closed
    Carpets are part of the most known products in Tunisia (gives you Aladin Vibes, right ?) and it is all hand-made carpets made by women in their houses (it's very important to clarify though that nobody is forcing these women to do it, they are housewifes and they are doing it as a hobbie or a tradition passed from a generation to another generation, it is a good investment for housewifes to pass some of their time working on a product like this, so it is not forced on them by any means)
    The University of Zaytoona is the first University in the whole world, it was created in 734 (1289 years ago)
    When he spoke about "The Bey" he spoke about the leaders of the Ottoman Empire, they call them "Beys", Tunisia was under the ruling of the Ottoman Empire before the French Colonism (1881-1956)
    The guy also spoke about how the tourism has been heavily affected in 2019 because of Covid-19 so 75000 families got directly impacted because of the lack of tourists and that's why they are making prices cheaper because they have families to feed.
    One thing is important don't think that anyone would give you a tour for free, expect that he will be asking for something at the end

    • @worldnomac
      @worldnomac  Před 8 měsíci +56

      Thank you so much for sharing these insights! It's fascinating to learn about the unique cultural connections in Tunisia, like the 'Hindi' cactus and Tataouine's link to Star Wars. Those carpets were a thing of beauty and at first I was wondering about so much security and police around but later figured it out!!
      Once again, I’d like to thank you for taking the time to educate us about Tunisia's unique cultural connections. It's truly enriching to learn about these fascinating aspects!!🇹🇳❤️

Thanks to everyone who has commented! i just want to let you know getting overcharged for things happens in most places in the world as a tourist, including Tunisia. So don’t let that deter you. It doesn't define the country at all. Tunisia is filled with incredible people and stunning landscapes. So, don't let a single experience overshadow the beauty and kindness of the people here! I love it here and plan to come back many times!

From the airport to Marsa it s between 10Dinars to 20Dinars or max with some change you can even google it 50dt it s too much to avoid this kind of scammers you can use the app Bolt it s a bit more expensive but still alot cheaper than 50dt

    Hey there! I'm from Tunisia I really enjoyed watching your video about your first trip to Tunisia! It's always fascinating to see someone experiencing a new place for the first time.
    However, I'd like to share a bit of advice for future visits to Tunisia.
    Firstly, July can indeed be extremely hot in Tunisia, so it might be a good idea to consider visiting during a slightly cooler time of the year to make the most of your experience without the intense heat.
    Additionally, it's essential to be cautious with taxi drivers, restaurants etc. While many may seem friendly and helpful, it's unfortunately quite common for visitors to be overcharged 3 times the actual price. you can find friendly Tunisian people to help you no get ripped off 🙂.
    Also you should visit Djerba, Souse, Hamamet, Bizert, Mahdia ... they have amazing beaches and they're cool places to visit.

I walked through the Bab El Bhar and down the path you went and thought to myself, I wonder if I'll see that Tour guide. No joke, at that same moment the guy just magically appeared out of no where right next to me. It scared the crap out of me ha. He then immediately proceeded to give me the same spiel he gave you. I told him I've heard that all before and we parted ways. Ha crazy....Thank you for your videos!

    • @andybaker2456
      @andybaker2456 Před 8 měsíci +1

      There's a group of touts whose job it is to get people to that shop. I was even approached by one who I'd seen many times in CZcams videos, he looked shocked when I addressed him by name! I had actually wanted to go to that shop so I could see that view, so when I was first approached by a tout, I asked him to take me straight there. I even got away with paying for his efforts as a tour guide as I asked him to take me to his family's perfume shop, something I was looking to buy anyway! It's all about doing your research beforehand.
      Oh, and even though those "ruins" on the shop's rooftop may look old, one of the shop workers admitted to me that they were built in 2006! 😂

    Sorry brother, but you got ripped off: La Marsa is not far away from the airport and you should have paid way less than 50 tnd. In the beginning, when he knew that you are a CZcamsr, he advised you to get a taxi from the 1st floor (those who drop travelers coming to the airport) because he doesn't want to be exposed. Indeed a few like himself wait in the parking so that they scam foreigners who come for the 1st time and sometimes native Tunisians as well, those who aren't aware of that game.
