- Today is my first full day exploring the beautiful city of Kolkata West Bengal. The day started off great heading out to explore and experience my first impressions of the city. After strolling around, I came across a protest and spoke to some locals about what was happening. After, I went to search for cricket jerseys and did some negotiating on the price with a few salesmen. Later in the video, I headed over to Howrah Bridge and stopped by to try out an Egg Roll. During that time, I had a man attempt to rob me but luckily I had zippers on my pockets so when he lunged for my phone he was unsuccessful on grabbing it.

Well if you visit a country like India, you should always prepare for the bad experience esp. for women . It's not an easy and safe country for tourists
As a world traveler myself, you should always be aware of your surroundings. If possible, have someone local you trust to help point you in safe directions.
Easier said than done, you can do things to make it harder for people to rob you like this guy did (zippered pockets) but you can’t have eyes in the back of your head.

People are busy over there always commuting. the guy that came from behind you actually was trying to grab your attention and yes he unfortunately is a homeless insane person. sorry about your experience. If you want a place where you can just sit and relax then I would suggest you go to Millennium Park which is very close to your hotel beside the river

My Indian friends who live here in the US but who go home to India for vacations; told me that it's become very bad over there now. Some are choosing to not visit India anymore because the India they knew has changed for the bad.
I think its a worldwide phenomenon as the population increases and the equality gap gets bigger everyday all country's in every continent are having to deal with ever increasing ,mental health,addiction,poverty,discrimination,violent crime,rise of violence and extremenism from both far right and left of politics..Relative to the population , USA has is far more dangerous and has many more murders and violent robberies than India.

Hey Mac, I'm from Kolkata as well. If you ever visit the Maidan Market again, always buy jerseys and other stuff from the shops inside the market courtyard, there are entire sections of the market with similar shops lined together for each item - jerseys, cricket equipments, football equipments and so on. You'll always get a much better and realistic price inside. The ones on the footpath, like where you bought the 1st jersey from always have a higher price and also lower quality of products.

Sorry for your adrenaline experience in the busy road, but in general there are several beautiful places in the city to go for in a day trip or a 2 day trip. Must visits, Vidyasagar setu, Princep ghat, national library, national museum, boat ride on ganges from near princep ghat area to howrah bridge, tibetan breakfast at tiretti bazar (poddar court), walk in the park street area explore cafes( flurys must try). Biryani_Arsalan Park circus 7 point musttry. Walk through Kumartuli artisans district, Birla temple, Birla planetarium, Victoria memorial, Dakshineshwar temple and Belur Math by ferry, College street bookwalk and coffeehouse..you'll love it! Enjoy the summer🎉 but be careful with the crowd and traffic! Greetings from Germany❤

It’s true you will find these people every part in the world , especially in densely populated cities. I have been in US for 5 yrs, and now in Bay Area even we experienced worst cases in Sf downtown and Oakland.

I'm glad in Kolkata people are reverting back nicely saying namaskar😊. Please note that in a cosmopolitan city like Kolkata you find people of different languages and different religious backgrounds. Not all of them say 'namaskar'. Many people say 'namaste' or assalam waleykum as well.

Kolkata is totally safe just some busy places like station area and ferry areas it's slightly risky...just a small tip >buy a fanny pack which will stick to you so that people can't snatch anything.

Hey mac, welcome to Kolkata. I feel you should have make a proper tour plan first instead of just roaming around some commercial places in the city. There are lots of beautiful tourist spots in and around Kolkata which you should cover. The school kids were talking about Victoria memorial (an iconic place), which is very near from Shahid Minar, which you visit. So, a proper tour plan or atleast a google search would work fine for you I believe. Enjoy your stay and happy roaming.
