- The Nikon Coolpix P1000 has an unprecedented 125x 24-3000mm zoom lens. But how does it perform in real world? I'll talk about the pros and cons of the camera in this review and share with you some photos and videos I shoot.

*** CORRECTION *** I've mistakenly said the Coolpix P1000 has "150X" zoom while it should be 125X. Thanks Jose Garcia for pointing out my mistake!
Text in video description is still 150x.
Ah thanks! Fixed now
Richard Wong
No problem.

You're a weird one. It's not like we called him a dummy. Honest mistake with a simple pointing out, and you get your panties in a bunch? Do people tippy-toe around you because you have thin skin? Besides, Richard Wong took it in stride, and you're making a big deal out of it? Haha
Richard Wong How far (how many kilometers away precisely ?) can you film and take pictures maximum with a Nikon P1000 ???
Hello Richard. I live in Auckland as well. Thanks for taking the time to put this excellent review together and sharing it on CZcams.
No worries! Hopefully will meet you on the street one day!
Perfect review of this incredible camera! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge of it, so helpful 😀
Glad you like it Storm Aurora!
Richard, thanks for the excellent review of this camera. I especially appreciated your comparison of video shot with VR on and VR off.
Glad you find it useful!
Awesome review Richard I enjoyed it very much. Image quality looks to be decent for this camera and like you mentioned as long as one does not expect pro DSLR performance out of it. By far this is the best review of this camera to date, thanks for putting it together for all to see. I have subscribed.
Fantastic review, best on youtube by a mile good work will be subscribing from now on
Thank you Phillip I am glad you like it and thanks for the sub!!
Sorry for being so late to the party! Hopefully my P1000 will arrive in a couple of days. This is one of the best objective reviews of this camera on CZcams. Thanks so much :)
Thanks for watching! Have fun with your p1000
you did a crazy excellent job on this video, I liked it...2 thumbs up!!!
Thank you very much Heinz 57 American!
solid video.. great job! and you talked about the manual focus ring.. most vids dont talk about it and it is a important feature.. and your right it is an exciting camera..
Thank you Shawn glad to hear you like the video :)
How have we not run into each other! We are fillming in the same places with the same cameras :D Great stuff mate.
Hey superzoom videos! Good to see another kiwi CZcamsr here! Hopefully will run into you in real life in near future

@@YouOriginal oh hi there!
Excellent review...... Will save me from reading where to much about the P1000. Hope mine arrives soon... Pre-ordered a month ago.
Enjoy your P1000!!
Good review and thanks for taking some proper photos. So many videos of just zooming in at things far away, demonstrating how good it is at spying.
Thank you Terry!
Nicely presented Richard. I have had my P1000 for a couple of weeks now and I'm enjoying it as a complement to my D500. The P1000 represents very good value for what it is designed to be, and I'm sure most new buyers will have a lot of joy using it, provided they understand the limitation the small sensor has.
Thanks and agree with you 100%! I think Nikon did some magic with the P1000 but then it still has a tiny sensor and super soon lens so we have to be realistic about it's limitations
When AI can enchant/fix image, I think limits not exist
Thank you; I am still learning with mine. I am beginner, but enjoy experimenting; from Macro to full 3000mm.
Have fun!!
Hi, really cool video thanks. Is there a automatic setting for Iso adjusting please?
it's been a while since i use the P1000, but i'm pretty sure there should be a auto ISO function you can enable like other Nikon cameras
Hi! Thanks for the great, detailed review. Which shooting mode did You prefer when using the camera - full manual or any other?
hi Viktorian3d, it depends on what I'm shooting. For static scenes like moon or landscape, i prefer full manual as I can get most consistent results. But shooting quickly, then aperture priority works fine
Great review! Thanks for all the effort you put into it.
Thank you Victor :)
The P900 has a battery EN-EL23 and the P1000 has the EN-EL20a. Do you know which is better?. Can we switch them or use a better model of battery in the P1000? Thanks
Hi co taicho. The enel20a should be a better battery as it has higher mw capacity. I don't think these two batteries are interchangable as they have completely different voltage and dimensions
Just quick question please can u use P1000 in special occasion like wedding thanks would appreciate
Sorry, I don't think the P1000 is the best camera for documenting weddings. Not when I'm shooting professionally at least
Please help with one important issue: this a go to camera for birding BUT autofocus focuses on branches not the bird in the branches. Please do a vid on using af then correcting manually.
Thanks for the suggestion and I will see if I have chance to do that. Also try focus on something with high contrast, if it's a black bird it would be hard for the camera to autofocus. This applies to all cameras not just p1000
Thank you. Very well presented video on the new Nikon P1000.
I own a P900, now with the new P 1000, I feel like I bought mine too soon. But, I still enjoy what I have.
Thanks again.
Thank you for watching this video MarcaDelZorro09
Nah... the p900 is already good enough. U're so lucky....

Does the P1000 have a " lo-key" setting, under "effects?" Thanks!
to be honest I haven't play with the effects much so sorry can't answer your question
Thanks for the video, I have the P1000 also. Great camera. Worth every penny.
Enjoy your p1000!
Thank you for the review. One of the best if not the best!

it's really nice that they included the pop up flash. That really makes this camera special...

Hey, Is the camera slow ? Like if i make picture is it slow like busy busy 2-3sec.
Not DSLR speed for sure.. but not super slow either. At least it didn't annoy me
I am from India - good and a very practical review. Thanks.

Hello, i tried but did not focus on distant objects, can you help, i tried all modes. ? With triopod as well
sorry not sure. I don't have this camera with me so can't really help troubleshoot

Not much difference between 2000 and 3000 should we just get a p950?
There is a Fn button, to fast change your camera settings.
Great video - very well explained. Thank you so much! 🙂
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for bringing up that point. And summed up perfectly. You are buying this camera for its range and decent shots. Not for best image possible. But don’t get me wrong, I own both the 900 and 1000 and can tell you I have shown some of my work to people and they can not believe I used a bridge camera.
Not as good as a DSLR, but if that’s what you want, buy a DSLR.
Well done review. Thanks especially for showing the image quality at different focal lengths. The quality is quite impressive up to 2000mm but I don't think you get more detail over that, which is quite the par on bridge cameras. The zoom is just mad :D The moon shot is gorgeous, at this resolution you should be able to get Saturn as well. With a sun filter this would also be sweet for sun shots.
Thanks James! Yes the image quality drops a bit from 1500-2000mm onwards but I would say it's still very usable, especially if you are shooting 4k video. Yes should be able to get the saturn ring at 1000mm + but since it's not really that bright I have to bump up the iso quite a lot so the results won't be that good unfortunately.
Thank you, great test, would love to see how the SX70 pictures look from same spot.
Thank you Willie! I'll see if i have the chance to get my hands on a SX70 :)
Great review Richard, help me to choose between B700 and P1000. P1000 is way to big to carry around, I'm a chef so I was thinkin that it's hard to carry around the kitchen. Please do advise about the pros of B700. Thanks
Hello Rommel, sorry I haven't really tested the b700 so can't compare it with the p1000. But biggest downside of the p1000 is it's huge size, so if you are ok with that then the p1000 would be the ultimate zoom camera
great review Richard your video was one of the main reasons i got the p1000 back in the uk after my break from Beijing for a short holiday. i am very happy with it for a new learner to cameras it is ideal while you learn the finer things such ios, shutter speed .aperture,etc.also a new sub here.xiexie zai jian
Thank you and glad you found the review useful
Love it! keep on zooming! I can´t wait for the next version, hope I can afford to buy it :)
Thank you for watching :)
Can we use nikon p1000 for portrait shooting??
You won't get the same results as a large sensor DSLR/mirrorless with fast lens but you can for sure.
Excellent Review, very helpful.
Thank you shamgar truth!
I can't get to understand the numbers before the "MM"
What does "24-1000mm" actually stands for? for me, 1000mm is one meter.
Someone please explain.
Without going into too much technical details on what it means, the mm is the focal length, consider it a scale for you to describe how wide the photo you can capture... The smaller number (e.g. 24mm) means wide angle lens, while a larger number like 200mm is a telephoto lens (zoom in a lot). 1000mm is a lot of zoom in, more than what most cameras/lens normal people would ever use is capable to do.
Great review!!
Thanks for the good review. I have subscribed.

Enjoyed the vid. Thanks
Thank you Paul!
Now I'm interested in buying one of these! The short battery life is a bit off-putting though. Do you know if it could be charged on the go with one of those generic phone re-chargers or something similar? Would it risk ruining the battery if it were a strong re-charger? Very informative video!
I don't see why not? I haven't done much testing but I would imagine the camera would have regulatory circuit to control input to avoid damaging the battery or the camera
im just going to get and extra battery way to many benefits for me
Great review, can't wait till i can find a used and affordable one.
I have a p100 right now and i quite like it. Wouldn't mind upgrading to the 1000 :P
upgrade to a real camera instead ;)
@@sanantonio855 I've thought about it, but in order to have these features i'd have to pay twice the price and have 2 bags full of gear... and my life situation doesn't really allow me to do that so far. So one day i'll probably do it, but so far i'm going to have to stick with my p100 (not p900 like i wrote in first comment by accident) and wait till prices drop on better cameras so that i can slowly upgrade without having to sell a kidney :P
@@crispy-k What you should get is a used DSLR and a used all purpose lens, something like 17-50 mm. Quality glass makes the biggest difference. It will be very useful for most shots and will give you image quality no bridge camera will ever provide given the small sensors and crap glass they have.
Cause honestly, no one needs that zoom.
@@sanantonio855 it's not that i "need" the zoom, but i like having it if i can. I'll keep an eye out for a used dlsr and some lenses for sure ;)
@@crispy-k imo it's the best choice you can make! I personally bought a nikon D7000 along with a sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 lens, both used in great condition and for less than half the price of the P1000.
A nice and informative review.
Thank you Timothy!
Very informational, thanks.
Thank you Michael
😎👍 “THANK YOU” !
Hello. Very nice and clear video. Thanks ! Desde Adrogué BsAs Argentina para el resto del mundo.
Thank you for watching juan
I owned the P900 for a couple of years and made some good content for facebook but in the end the image quality got on my nerves. I love super zooms but the sensor size of the P1000 is too small. I would buy a super zoom even bigger than P1000 if the sensor was bigger.
the P1000 is already a pretty huge camera, if the sensor is any larger, the camera has to be much larger to maintain the same zoom range.
I wish you did full digital zoom on the tower.
But great video nonetheless. And great photos.
Oh ok thanks for the feedback!! :)
good video !
lets see if u have a nikon p 900 review aswell :D
I had one, but from memory it was for a local magazine so not youtube video sorry
Why Nikon don't put in this camera a 1" sensor? Would be much more expensive because that?
If the sensor was larger you wouldn’t get those far reaching zoom capabilities
How about the sunny day?
Sorry can you explain a bit more?
I love mine.
Awesome! There still isn't another better camera than it in this category
Great review my friend. New sub!
Thank you Rick!!
Still better than today phone zoom gimmick XD
To avoid blur when shooting static objects (for example, astronomical photos) at maximum extension of the lens, I recommend using the electronic shutter, using the solid tripod, using the remote control or the self-timer set to 3 seconds. There is new version of firmware Ver.1.1 available for download downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/fw/307.html but it not improves many things. To protect the front lens use only high quality filter, for ex. B+W amzn.to/2ygFmTn. By the way, one of the cons of this camera, it should have a tripod mount under the lens and not on the base of the body. This camera should have back-illuminated sensor and not old one.
excellent rewie
Glad you liked it!
Comment about the Nikon Coolpix P1000
Overall the camera look very excited and remarkable tool for the Astro or Wildlife photographer or
videographers who wishes to get extreme telephot images,it should be noted that the material
shot by Richard Wong was done on an overcast day, using the camera in some cases at the full
ended range of the lens at 3000mm,if the material was shot on a sunny might the images might
have introduced severe heat shimmer in fact unusable image,In my opinion the long end of of
zoom 3000 or slightly less should only be used at an intermediate distance and on tripod if
possible using a remote for shutter or start stop of the video
One other comment a shame that the camera does not appear to have headphone monitor
provision
Hi Ronald, some really valid comments. Thanks for watching and your comments :)
Very cool review :-)
Thank you Medelis 3D!
Excellent! The best review of the Nikon P1000 ultra zoom camera. Please show us more videos using this wonderful camera. In particular its video performance from the same location on the hill. Please take the videos (again) early in the day when the atmospheric conditions are favorable. Please zoom from 35 mm all the way out to 3000 mm. And please use a tripod so that we can see the best possible video shots. In fact, you do not need to do much (or any) speaking which may slow you down.
Thanks for the feedback and suggestions! Will try do something that if I have the chance to use the camera again :)
TOP CAMERA
This is by far the best review ive seen on youtube, thanks for putting a very well explained video together, now to check out the comments ,hope the flat earth idiots havnt found this to troll .
Thank you Dodge Collins!!
I wish reviewers would stop saying this has a 3000mm lens. It is 3000mm equivalent when taking crop factor from 35mm into consideration. The sensor on the P1000 is only about 6.5mm, which is a crop factor of about 5.4. The actual focal length of the lens is 539mm. A 539mm lens is a 539mm lens. Crop factor lenses for DSLR are marked with their actual focal length, not the equivalent for 1.5x crop. Reality matters.
Yes it is 3000mm equivalent.
For general consumers, I believe the actual focal length doesn't really matter that much as they mostly concerns the view angle especially compact camera has so many different sensor sizes and 99.9% of consumer have no idea how to convert actual focal length back to equivalent focal length that they can understand. That's why pretty much all manufacturer would list the equivalent focal length on all the marketing materials and only print the actual focal length on the lens barrel.. For APS-C DSLR users, they are generally more educated and most of them should know their camera has a 1.5x crop factor when compare to 35mm full frame cameras and the fact that they will mix aspc and FF lenses so it makes more sense to use the actual focal length instead and let the user concerts them back to FF equivalent themsevles
Dude don't be daft. If I am using my D500 and Sigma 150-600 lens...The 600mm photo I took would be nowhere near as tight as the 600mm "marked lens" on a Micro 4/3rd camera or this P1000 camera. To pretend that sensor size cropping doesn't affect the actual image is stupid. You can site its a 539mm lens all you want but the actual image outputted is not. The only way you could say that is if the only cameras you have ever owned all had the same size sensor because you would only know that crop factor and never know the difference. If you use an APS-C or Full Frame or Medium Format then you need to do that math to get things evened out. I would not use a 24mm lens on an APS-C body and thing I was going to get ultra-wide angle shots. I would want a 14mm lens or lower. If I put a 10mm lens on my D800e it would be a fisheye lens most likely.
@@toddysurcharge771 I never said that crop factor doesn't matter, but actual focal length has a meaning and purpose. Take any major DSLR manufacturer with both full frame and APS-C crop camera bodies. Even when they manufacture lenses that work specifically for use with their APS-C crop sensor bodies (Nikon DX lenses, for example), they are marked with their actual focal length. Nikon doesn't mark their 18-55mm DX lens as 26-77mm just because it is specifically for a crop sensor camera. So the problem thar I have is, when it comes to marketing, they try to be as cryptic as possible when it comes to disclosing the actual focal length. You need to dig through specs on the Nikon website to actually find the true focal length. Even small point and shoot cameras made by Nikon and Canon list the real focal lengths right on the face of the lenses. Nikon, as much as I love them, do things like say "3000mm lens!" only when it suits them for hype.
I'm starting to think that DSLRs cause mental illness. Try shooting video with a 400mm or 600mm lens and then cropping it to match the framing from this camera. Enjoy your SD video.
nice review
Thank you for watching!
nice shots
Thanks Trish
Are you from Hong Kong?
Yes i grew up in HK then moved to New Zealand
Fantastisk
Thank you!
I am the unlucky guy to have gotten a defective Nikon P1000 , the first 2 weeks the image quality was good and then it was very poor after that , I have already gone to various forums and tried what everybody suggested but the image quality is very poor like the cameras of 2002 . I reset everything to default , I tried different VR settings , different autofocus ,manual etc, nothing works , I'll be exchanging it.
Your photos with p1000 where almost equivalent to a professional using a a DSR.
Thank you

Price
Best to check your local store for latest price my friend
What about megapix...? 16Mp.. I dont like that ...😟😟😟
Why do you not like that? A nice 16mp is enough for most usage. Going higher resolution doesn't mean you will get better image quality when you have a small sensor and high power zoom
It doesn't bode well for the review when Richard has to swap to his other camera as the weight was weighing him down (just a thought) good review though😀
LOL! Thanks for watching :D
fumbs up!
Auckland says “we have volcanos”
Taranaki says “thats not a volcano... this is a volcano”. :)
P1000 is a really interesting camera. I like the macro capabilities while using the long zoom. No other camera allows you to get macro of insects from enough distance to not disturb them.
Lol!!! True true
Richard Wong You still using the P1000? If so, I wonder what you think of it after so much time?
No i don't. That was a loan camera i used for review so i have to return it unfortunately!
Richard Wong I have 2 things on my to do list. Firstly to buy a P1000 and secondly to go to New Zealand. When I do get there it would be nice to say hello and go out doing more testing on the camera :)
yeap message me if you visit New Zealand!
man nice info thanks it seems there no much difference with the 900
Thank you Yoichi franck
But I would say while fundamentally they are similar in concept,, there are a bit of difference between the two cameras. The p1000 is like a p900 on steroid.
@@TheRealRichardWong Man do you think the Zoom of the P1000 and P900 there is no much difference or the difference is huge
@@yoichifranck3023 the zoom difference is quite big. But there is a lot more than that. For example the electronic viewfinder is much better, you can now record 4k video, you can have raw output...etc. All those add up make the p1000 a much better camera. But comes with the cost of much bigger and heavier body
Only issue I have with my P1000 is how crappy the mics are on it. Lacking low end sound. Terrible that I have get an external stereo mic option for a $1000 camera
Yes, but internal mic even the more expensive cameras are usually pretty bad in terms of audio quality. At least you have an external mic input on the p1000 so even a cheap $20 mic can improve the audio a lot
Any good suggestions for a decent external stereo mic?
Rode or sennehiser if you want decent mic. But I have tried some no brand mic between $20-50 are quite good.. Actually if you want to record yourself talking even the cheap $10 lapel mic on ebay does a very good job

I am talking sour grapes, since it is unlikely that I can buy the P1000. However - you should have had a tripod with you on Mount Eden. The moon pass finished before it filled the frame. You do far more talk than demonstration.
Hi Henry thanks for the feedback. I was really trying to show you how the VR improves the video/photo and how hard it is to shoot nice photo/video at 3000mm. And to keep the video not super long, I thought the other moon video is good example to show you what you could do if you shoot noon a proper tripod setup. But points noted. Thanks!
Richard Wong - Thank you for your reply. I do the occasional instructional video about radios, not so much about cameras now. I have not bought a new camera for over three years
10:16 very good, but you talk to much in the video
Thanks for the feedback!
Plse try to rest the camera on Tripod when shooting with full zoom...otherwse no sense of the review..
Hi there, please check my other video which was shot on tripod at full zoom :)
Greetings from an india,
I'm an Mariner & photography is kinda my hobby,
I'm Going to upgrade from my basic point & shoot camera to big Daddy segment( let's say 400-1400USD segment)
Here are the few things I expect from my new camera..
1)able to do sports photography
2) good for family photos (background blur is mendetory) 3)still photography(nature)
4) good for night photography
5) 300mm-400mm zoom
6) able to get image quality which will look desent on 55 inch TV screen
Now,
Here Comes the real question...😅
Is P1000 will be a right choice for me..? Or P900 Is more then sufficient
Also..
Is it wiser to go for a 1000$ bridge camera over DSLR ( Considering NIKON D5600+ Tamron 18-400mm Len's)...?
Also got a tempting offer on Sony Alfa a7 ii (full frame) which cost just around 950$
For what you want to shoot, esp sports, a DSLR with telephoto lens is probably the better choice as it offers better autofocus and also far better image quality when it's getting dark
@@TheRealRichardWongfor me... it might go slightly overbudget but it seems like Sony a7ii + 24-240mm Lens will be sweet deal for me ( getting unbox one from Best buy around 1400USD) 😅
or
Nikon D 5600 + Tamron 18-400mm ( brand new for 1200USD) is more then sufficient..?
The Nikon would have quite a bit better autofocus performance than the Sony. But Sony's low light image quality would be better
@@TheRealRichardWong appreciate ur help sir😊
