    Mr Simmons, Such a good and thorough review. I was looking for comparison between these 2 camera, though my concern is more to do with the big difference in size than the cost. I plan to watch to a couple more times to have everything sink in, but want to express my great appreciation first. Also your style is very genuine / authentic and I really appreciate that as well. Really looking forward to more videos from you . Again, thanks so much.

    Many thanks, Dale. You have such an affable, cheerful. warm character and a wonderful presentation style.
    I've been happily using the P900 since 2017 as I was mainly using it for stills. Now I want to start doing videography. so the P1000 seems more versatile as it shoots in 4K but crucially also has an auxiliary microphone input. It also has the benefit of a hot-shoe mount for flash or other attachments.
    I didn't like the idea of the offset Whitworth screw mount on my P900 but it hasn't proven to be an issue as I use it with Manfrotto QR plates. It's a pity the IR remote for the Nikon P900 can't be used with the P1000, and it now requires a separate transmitter and receiver attachment: that is a retrograde step.
    The battery system has changed too: the P900 uses EN-EL23 that is good for 360 stills, whereas the P1000 uses EN-EL20a which is only good for 250 shots. Both batteries offer around 1 hour 20 minutes video recording in the respective cameras. It is though disappointing that each video session is limited to 30 minutes on the P1000. Maybe Nikon will rectify this on the successor, as the P1000 has been around for almost three years now. Maybe they should also look at a decently sized image sensor instead of the 1/2.3"

      @johnmichaelrichards Před 3 lety +2

      I have disabilities, which made it increasingly difficult for me to use and carry around my Pentax K200D and lenses, etc. I bought the P900 second-hand from a friend in 2017. Since having it, I've never used my Pentax. The P900 is lighter than the Pentax and its size sits well in the hand but just be warned, it's bulkier and heavier than most bridge cameras. The P1000 is bigger and heavier still.

    • @MrBooojangles
      @MrBooojangles Před 3 lety

      @@johnmichaelrichards thanks. My friend eventually did choose the P900 and seems very happy with it. When I want a new bridge camera, I'm going to stick with another Panasonic one, as they are pretty good too and the ones I have my eye on have CMOS sensors now, plus good 4K video and frame capture and much more optical zoom then my 600mm on my Panasonic DMC-FZ45. I got a DSLR too, but I will always keep a bridge camera for its extra focal length and speed of getting it out and zoomed out when you're in a rush to capture something moving.

      If you kayak, you own a P1000, and you haven't tried to measure the point of curvature of earth/boats go over horizon, with blind eye vs bringing them back multiple times with the cameras? You are either a flat earther, or a gatekeeper...Or MISSING OUT on the reality of what you can PROVE for yourself. Mr. D knows this, and he uses military measures, like an angle finder to measure distance and that cannot work with R value, it has to be 90degree angle. This is actually very decent review of the cameras. But the main purpose of these are the max zoom, and they both seem to do a good job. If you use this for multi use...He is absolutely right, the P1000 would be worth the difference. If just using it for the zoom, and seeing atmospheric conditions far out, and doing some moon shooting, just get the P900

    I have the P900 for something like 4 years now. I shot just more than 33,000 pictures with so far and no, zero problems. Mostly birding and other wildlife photos. I still love it with it's shortcomings and all.
    If the P1000 "Birdwatching" setting is at all like that of the P900, I will ignore it completely. I might do centre light sampling but not centre focusing, and for small birds sitting in-between branches on the other side of a tree or other obstacle, it struggle to focus on that small bird. I mainly use "P" - Programmed Auto where you pre-program the settings where you would if you used manual and that works for me. That is what "Birdwatching" setting is, but with my own priorities. Try it, is works. In difficult situations where "P" does not work well, I would change to some manual or other setting according to the situation.

      Not a problem I appreciate the response. Glad to know you use them and werent just testing them.
      I use my P900 for far away wildlife shots, when I take photos for the local fire department if I need to be farther away for safety, for moon shots, and sunset/sunrise..
      The only issue for me is it seems the P900 doesnt reproduce reds very well.
      When taking stills I could have what appears to be a full red or orange setting and to get close to the color I have to shoot about - 3/4 exposure compensation and even then I'll have yellow in the sun. Just kind of frustrating for me.
      Obviously it doesn't perform well in low light but I accept that and use it for its strengths.
      Thanks again for the reply.

      I'd like to hear your thoughts or suggestions.
      I have two P900s and sent the best condition and less used to Nikon to be repaired. Minor repairs and only going to cost $200.
      A few days ago my other one the lens gears must be jammed as the lens is stuck out at 2,000mm and Ive tried everything to retract but it wont.
      Im thinking if I send this to Nikon for them to repair that and other issues it has its going to be a lot higher than the other repair.
      Lets say its going to cost $300 would I be better putting that towards a P950?

    Hi Mr D, Thank your for your great video. I already own a P900 and was considering upgrading. There is something entrancing about a new camera! but watching your very detailed and practical video made me think that, at least in the first instance, I will work on improving my range of skills, technique and speed with the P900. I wonder if you might be able to give me any pointers on a particular area or skill that I struggle with. I mainly do bird photography. Often I can see the bird without the camera, then I can see it in wide screen but when I go to zoom in, I kind of lose it, and have to zoom out again to find it, of course this takes a lot of time and the bird may have gone. I usually use the viewfinder, but am going to experiment with the screen. Im worried that if I got a camera with a longer lens, this may be more of a problem. Any suggestions or comments?

    • @DaleMrDSimmons
      @DaleMrDSimmons  Před 4 lety +1

      jenny Hartman That is a standard problem using a big lens. Use the snap zoom switch on the side of the lens. That is what I do when i loose a subject and it works well. Be it understood, the P900 performs horrible for any in flight shots.

    • @leeswanson9732
      @leeswanson9732 Před 3 lety

      Lots of practice helps.

    • @PouncingAnt
      @PouncingAnt Před 2 lety

      In case anyone is still having this issue, the snap zoom button is definitely useful for this. Practice is also useful.
      What I usually do is start out at 1/2 or 1/4 of the way zoomed in, so that what my left (naked eye) sees is similar to what the right eye sees. This makes it very easy to interpret where the subject is in the image in the viewfinder.
      Maybe this is just practice, having used high-powered zoom compact cameras for almost 20 years, but I often (about half the time) find that I can be fully zoomed in and find a bird, so long as *both* my eyes are open. I'm not sure how this helps, I guess my brain is doing something subconsciously that helps me locate it.
      (It might help to try using a monocular for practice, as then you're practicing the skill without being limited by the camera's viewfinder resolution.)
      If the bird is moving a lot though, I can't keep up, and generally lean on the snap zoom function a lot.
      However, for the P900 (and most of the older super-zooms I've tried), poor focusing on birds in flight is a huge problem. I probably don't need to say it, but evidently, you're not going to find the bird if the picture is so blurry that the bird is gone. Unfortunately, if the sky is clear, its not always obvious if the focus is correct or not. I find the solution is almost always to zoom out, refocus, zoom in, focus, shoot. And yes, this almost always results in the bird getting away! (Though useful if something is circling.)
      My go-to method for birds in flight is actually to zoom out slightly. Much easier even at 75% zoom, because the autofocus is much worse at full zoom. But as Mr. D, says, the camera certainly isn't optimal for flying birds.
      (Being unable to resist the urge to go to 100% zoom is my number one demon right now.)
      One big reason I'm looking to get a P1000 is the manual focus ring, so I can leverage big zoom without losing the majority of my pictures to the somewhat disappointing full-zoom autofocus.

      Saint Tos For portraiture I would not recommend the P1000 basically because of its limitations in Fstop. Can it be done? Yes but you would be sacrificing bokeh like you get with a lens with either a 1.2 or 1.4. I hope that answers your question.

      Lonnie Clemens You can but it will adversely affect your shots. It’s something to do with the way Nikon designed the P900 lens. I had contacted Nikon when I got the P900 and they said no on filter use. I guess that no filters or lens hood hit their selling market negatively. Since Nikon did incorporate the lens hood and 77mm filter ability on the P1000. If you don’t have the P900 already, I would recommend highly the P1000 as the improvements made far out shine the P900.
