Awesome video/review. Short, precise, articulate. Definitely considering the P950, for a B-Day gift. P1000, is a little hefty, pricey, and can have noticeable distortion using max-zoom. A Bridge camera with a hotshoe, is a BIG advantage. And the prime purpose of such a zoom lens is the fact you can record video in HD (4K). Smartphones, are a long-way off, from having such capability.

actually a basic telescope connected to a iphone 6 for example will give you crisp pictures and videos of the moon the image will increase depending on what camera phone you have don't underestimate a phone camera they only lack optical zoom which a telescope remedys. the nikon is more compact and travel friendly though but if you can't afford a nikon you always have options

I am using a P900 for 3 years now and all my vids on my channel is with this camera. It is great and I hardly found any advantage of P1000 over the P900. I shoot moon, planets, stars and birds.
youre right! Untill Not only does the LCD moniter no longer work , the zoom makes a loud grinding noise in some of my videos lol
I decided to upgrad to the P950, especially fr some 4k footage when I go planespottting=))))))))))))))))))))
I am using the COOLPIX P 1000 for the past one year & it is definitely the most voluptuous of the COOLPIX P series , this teenaged sister of P 900 has all the curves at right places of a nymph as also is bejewelled with many bells & whitsles ( accessories ) one has to have the guts to woo this moody but fabulous beauty . P950 comes a close second though !

Can't tell if the 4 k makes that much a difference since I tweaked the settings on my 900 to look better

About autofocus: I had that very same issue with the p900 until I got more experience with my hands on the camera. I as well just stopped using autofocus finally after a few years and taught myself how to use manual and have gotten some crisp videos with it. You can even have a look on my profile. :-) I must say, this camera sure is a worth upgrade if you're into taking videos.
One more thing to note, as I have stated, I have just started using manual focus. With the p900 it is a disaster to use manual focus. With the p950 there is a small ring on the left side which you can turn up and down to adjust the focus. Once again, you can have a look on my page and see some of my videos. More like short clips lol If you have any questions about these two cameras, feel free to ask I'll help as much as I can
PS, if you or anyone else reading these comments own a p900, feel free to request a link to a post that truly helped me tweak my camera to the most helpful settings I've ever set it to to get clear/crisp image quality
Very good review, thank you! I'm looking for an all around camera to get back into it without multiple lenses, bodies, etc. People bag on the size of te sensor but I've won print awards with 16mp Nikons before, so it's enough res if you know ur stuff...

I think this is a camera meant for subjects under plenty of light. Not sure how well it will fair for subject under shade e.g. in a forest environment.
Update: After I bought the P950 and tried it out for 3 weeks, I can now say with confidence that ISO1600 is very usable as long as you expose the picture well and only crop it minimally.
Don’t crop at all. That’s so trashy and amateur.

We have the Coolpix L840 and the zoom slider keeps getting stuck and it's not to clever on full zoom, the pics are a bit out of focus, but mainly it's been fine but i feel the need to move up to something better but as a complete beginner is this a step too far,i ask, great video,are there another camera with this zoom facility, that may suit someone like me better,any advice would be great,.
How would you compare the two when viewing the planets like the Saturn's rings? Will the vibration reduction give a better shot even without a tripot?
The bird at 2:02 looks stunning! I can’t get such a good zoom shot with my Sony A7 riii combined with a 100-400mm Master Lens with cropping or even with the Sony optical zoom! Simply put the zoom quality gives stunning clarity, no pixelation. How come?
400/100=just 4X zoom

It's a camera with compromises but for the money I think it's good.
I have had really nice photos of birds in good light. Better than with a bigger sensor and cropping.
It's less than the cost of most 600mm lenses.
I understand its not full frame quality and not great in low light but look how much it costs.
I could show you some bird photos next to apsc ones and you wouldn't know which were which.

In field photographers: don't overlook the sensor safety benefit of a good bridge camera (vs a DSLR). One lens that never opens to the sensor vs a bunch of lenses that do, in an area prone to dust, pollen, weather, and more. Less worry, more fun.

Please help if you can. I had my P950 out yesterday and it would not fucus on anything beyond 700/800mm with the auto focus engaged. It, however, did focus while using manual focus in all zoom settings. I called Nikon and the tech told me that I have to use the manual focus beyond 700mm. I find this hard to believe. Thank You Joe B.

I had SX70 a while ago and it wasn't much fun. Slow auto focus and 1200mm focal length wasn't that impressive. P950's focal range is impressive, faster af and 5 stops VR all adds up fun to use. And that dot sight is so cool you need to go try :-)

hi i am a frequent backpacker and travelled with the nikon b700 for the past few years and was super pleased with its all round capability (i am a point and shooter mainly) and have just bought me the p950. it weighs a little bit more but i have found over the last few years that i really gravitate toward wildlife so expecting this will give me that extra wildlife quality shots but still be great with people / buildings etc..
I was looking to upgrade my D7100. I'd considered the P1000 until all of the focus issues arose. Watching this video I believe the P950 might just be what I'm looking for. Thank you.

What focus issues??
Nice video, I own a canon cropped sensor DSLR camera, I want to upgrade my setup for bird and wildlife photography but for that a minimum of 400mm lens is needed which is as costly as Nikon P 950,should I consider purchasing a new lens or this camera. What would you suggest?
Hi, I’d suggest getting the P950 because you’ll get another up to 1360mm focal length and that is significant. The P950 has 5.5 stops of VR too that is really good. (If using a tripod turn the VR off.) so nearly an extra 1400mm of zoom and the amazing VR and you should get most of your shots really well. Of course use standard photographer stabilisation techniques, breathing, support, control, delayed 2 second shutter release etc. i have the P900 from several years ago and the P1000 more recently and I think they are amazing cameras. Don’t forget, up until about eight years ago 16 MP was the ant’s pants in photography equipment. The size of the P950 is much nicer too, the P1000 is large to put it mildly, often requiring more use of tripods, so even more “stuff” to carry around.

I bought this for macro photography of my jumping spider and highly disappointed because it won't focus well in close range. My iPhone SE was actually better at close range. Decided to return it and keep searching for a real macro Photography camera for super closeup.

I still can't really get over just how compact the lens assembly is. A similar focal length on a full frame camera or even a DSLR with crop sensor would likely be significantly bigger and probably significantly more expensive.
Not really. As Tamron makes an 18-400 that’s the same REAL focal length as this (not an equivalent) for DSLR. This just fakes it by using a really tiny sensor which shows in not on the quality but incredibly narrow field of view lacking detail and magnification of distance objects since you’re not actually getting the real magnification.

The Nikon P950 is sometimes portrayed worse than it really is by many. With this video I found two more videos from photographers that show what you can get out of this camera in manual mode and that was pretty impressive.🙂
I managed to get a moon shot with p900, that I still haven't been able to match with olympus or Canon 😳 but I can only imagine if only it was raw 😬

Hi Jim, in all honesty either camera will serve you well. It's more down to the budget you have and if you'd like the slightly higher specs of the P1000 (with the added size and weight). Will you be out and about with your bird watching or hoping to be lucky and capture something from your back garden?
I prefer photo without video. I think we should go back to a separate photography camera and a video camera so both items could be at their optimum. Anytime two operations are combined both processors loose viability.
Does this apply to cellphones ? Or tablets ? Personally, I use my Nikons D810, D850 and P1000 for both video and photo, love it all.

I had the P900 and sold it. Quality wise it is a to big of a step down from dslr. Even a 400 dollar dslr.
Never felt like keeping one of the pics I took.
It's nice for video but because of the small sensor and aperture, you are almost always stuck with a busy, distracting background.
Of course I knew those things in front but just had to see the 2000 mm equivalent 🤓.
You still can take some nice shots on sunny days but for a zoomgadget, it's just to clumpsy and to expensive.

Love this camera! Incredible zoom that’s beyond fun, and great quality! Went to Yellowstone National Park and was able to photograph a Bald Eagle from over a mile away. Would have needed a much more expensive camera with lots of attachments to be able to take a similar photos and videos. The P950 is fun to play around with. I would absolutely recommend spending the money on one. Seriously, it’s really, really fun.

Too many clueless wannabe David Bailey's waddling around with DSLR's and a " ton of glass" , when all they need is THIS ( bridge) camera , especially if they shoot auto - everything once they've located the "on" button , and YES I WOULD recommend it to folk who asked me which " daily ride " Nikon to purchase for recreational photography.
