This is to help those who have purchased the camera, either to introduce them to the buttons and doors, or for someone who has already had the camera but needed a reminder. The beginning of the video shows video and photo examples from the camera. The more you know, the less you will feel intimidated with the available settings and features!

Thoroughly enjoyed your 'walk-through. I've actually had the Cool pix 950 for almost a year now and although I've 'fumbled' through most of it, I've been able to get some pretty nice shots. Of course, I had to do some moon shots which forced me to get a tripod. No way could I keep a steady hand while taking those shots. I've done a good amount of sunsets as where I am is really close to the Niagara River. Sunsets are amazing. I learned quiet a bit from your video and have saved it for future reference. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and I'm sure I'll be referring to this video again.

After years and years of fiddling with different settings and interchangeable lenses, I'm done. This camera is fun, easy, and simple. Great walk thru, I learned alot and fast. Thanks!
whats the issue with interchangable lenses? Sure enough if you are a fast prime lens addicted photographer, you are right. But i dont see downsides on interchangable lenses - you are not forced to change them, you can also stick with the lens you use the most. A friend for example has a 60-600mm Sigma lens on his APS-C wildlife camera, hasnt changed lenses since months.
The issue with the P950 not so much but still, but very much on the P1000 - you always have to carry the big and heavy superzoom lens and also "enjoy" all the downsides of superzoom + small sensor.
For me its fun, easy and simple if i can choose if i want a proper tele zoom or prime lens for wildlife or if my compact and light regular zoom is enough. And if i want, i can also use any faster prime for better low light or out of focus backgrounds.
The P950 wanted to be everything, and as it is with every product which wants to be all in one, it has noticable and very problematic downsides in specific usecases which renders the P950 for much stuff useless or just bad fitted.

I’m pretty sure Nikon came out with the P900 then the P1000 and then they came out with the P950 which is basically the P900 body and zoom reach with raw and 4K functions from the P1000.

1:48 I agree. I can hardly improve any raw photos from the P950. I usually improve a lot any raw from my Canon 77D but with this camera I am not able to (no matter if I use NX studio or Camera Raw) and although I have read a lot of comments about the Nikon 950 this is the first time someone mentions it.
Even sometimes the preset modes work better than the creative ones (P, A, S, M). Its seems to be a fun but weird camera. Thanks for your review and sorry for my poor English.

I have this camera and I am not sure what happened but when I first used the ca Era a d you press the shutter button half way the camera would display a square and when the square was green then that was the photo was focus. From so e reason I do not have this square. Any idea how to get this option again
Hello, I have a question for you. I have the Nikon P950. Last night I got some great pics of the moon. Both in moon mode and in Manual mode. The question I have for you is when I am in manual mode and switch to manual focus, I am unable to change the aperture and the shutter speed unless I switch back to auto focus. Am I doing something wrong or is this the way the camera is. Thank you Joe B. NJ

In AF I find that if there is a leaf or twig in front of the bird, the camera will focus on that only. I can't get it to focus on the bird even if the bird is near.

Wondering if you could do a "how to use macro for close ups" tutorial with the p950- so far i do not find the macro shots very sharp and am wondering how to better use the setting (or whether to get a separate macro lens) thanks!
I will add it to my list! Try using a tripod. You would be surprised how much body shake can show in macro photographs!

Thank you for this! I just bought this camera, I'm very new to this and this helps! I got some nice moon pictures but I'm struggling with stars, what would you recommend on that?
Stars are a whole ‘nother battle LOL you need to be in a location where there is little, if at all, light pollution. You can search online a light pollution map that will show you the best areas to go and capture the stars. You will also need a tripod and possibly a remote if you want star trails or if you want the stars to be still you can manage without one. If you are not using a remote, you can set the timer on the camera to capture a 10-30 second exposure of the sky. There are other variables you can change but try and keep your ISO to a low number, 100-400. I plan on doing an Astro photography tips and tricks video in the summer so keep an eye out for it!
Having been a canon fan for most of my life I severely injured my shoulder and was no longer able lug the weight of a Camera and huge lens,( I am a bird photographer) Anyway I got to borrow this camera for a month to see if it would suit my needs and boy oh boy did it disappoint not one bit. I found the pictures were crisp, pin sharp, and the colours were spot on, Do I miss my cannon set up? not a bit. The movie part I have not used, as I don't shoot movies so unable to comment. Two of the guys I go birding with have also now traded in their kit and bought this camera.
Hi there ... I am desperately trying to get a CLEAR macro mode on this camera ... I bought it last Xmas (living in Ontario all the pictures I have taken so far have been of the moon , when I can) but I am a gardener and want to take great close up photos of my plants ... and insects. I don't know why I can't get a sharp macro photo.
I set it in the "flower" mode , the light is great .. but it just won't focus clearly when I come in close to a plant ... I didn't just buy this camera to take pictures of the moon no matter how great they are. Can you help me figure this out ? I would so appreciate it ... I am so frustrated !!!!

While you can program your custom buttons to access your focus area quickly, it won't automatically toggle from spot to wide, you have to scroll down to select it.

I recently purchased my P950 and can't wait to use it while on holiday next week. one thing I wish Nikon did was to give the user an option to tie the lens cap to a cable attached to the camera. my old Coolpix had that option but this one doesn't. :(
While Nikon didn't provide that option with their own cap, you could buy a ProMaster cap that has the holes ready for a tether which is nice! Just need the mm size which should be listed on the back of your Nikon cap!
I found with low lighting It depends on the setting in the bush among ferns on a bright sunny day I used low lighting
I know this is old but I thought it was first the 900, 1000 2018 then the 950 2020?
How do I create continuous shots, I believe I can do 7 with this camera.
Great video. I'm looking for a camera mainly to shoot video of windsurfing between 50 and 200 yards offshore. The long lens sounds like just what I need but your comments that this camera isn't the best choice for video causes me concern. The other camera I am considering is the Panasonic Lumix FZ 80. What do you think??
This video was unfortunately not built for video so I would definitely steer you away from this one. The FZ80 is better, but not by a ton. It definitely has better focusing ability but the fz300 is much better, I just don’t know if 600mm will be quite enough. If you want a quality camera that will give you the reach and quality, I would recommend getting either the Panasonic G9 or Olympus E-M1X/E-M1 mark III with the 100-400mm lens (which will give you 800mm) and the 1.4x teleconverter (which will make it nearly 1200mm) with a bigger sensor and faster processor. Not to mention more durable and will last you 10-15 years.
Thanks for the video. Any advice on shooting bird pics that are either backlit, or in shadow? I’m a camera newbie.
I would recommend using your center weighted metering or spot metering to tell the camera you want the light adjusted to see the bird in shadow, keep in mind this will make the rest of the photo lighter to compensate for the low light area

This goes for all cameras unfortunately. The HDMI connection will make the camera display unusable.

To turn off the assist light, go to your menu>wrench symbol>AF ASSIST>OFF
and you will be all set!

Thank you for the 950 walk through. Very helpful. I struggle with getting crisp images when shooting birds in the sky or on distant trees. All detail is lost and image blurred. I have been using maximum zoom, Manual mode, S2000-2500, A6.5-8, Area Mode normal, AF-F, RAW. What settings do you recommend? Is the camera capable? thank you
I had the same problem with this camera. Unless the bird was perched, my birds in flight images were very disappointing. I find that this camera suffers at movement from a distance, low light, and focusing during video. Which is why I really recommend it for photos only, landscapes and moon photos. That is where this model excels. If you love to capture birds specifically, the Sony RX10 series is the best, and the most recent has perfect focusing.
@@Shutterbug101 The RX10 also costs almost double the amount this camera does. It's a better camera, but a lot more expensive.
Maximum zoom is not going to get you sharp photos with this camera. But up tp a 1500 will. And just like any other camera you need to adjust settings. Birds in flight is not impossible in this camera. Try Sports mode or AF spot on bird mode. As well as these settings.

Is there two models of this camera a 950 and a 950 4k vision or is it just that some seller don't put the 4k in the description.
What's the built in memory size and would people recommend adding a 128gig card.
Is it easy to drag and drop photos off camera on to PC or do I have to use the software it comes with.
What camera bags are recommended for the p950.
All P950 models should have the 4K video, some sites just do not mention it I am sure.
This camera has no built in memory like a lot of today's cameras, so you will need an SD card. A 128GB will definitely suffice.
It is very easy to drag and drop your images in your PC with either the camera connected directly or through a card reader.

long exposure times. You will need a tripod for very blurry water and 2-5 seconds exposure time.

Great walkthrough, I like that it has a port for a shutter remote unlike the p900. I was wondering if the P950 is limited in exposure in manual like the 900 like only 15 sec with iso 100, and like 1 sec with something like iso 800. Also Wondering if while in video it has manual exposure adjustments, because the 900 doesn't. Thanks
The P950 didn’t up the game much when it came to those settings specifically, but I want to say the P1000 did do better in those areas.
The peanut 50 has movie manual mode. In this mode you can adjust ISO f-stop and whatever else during recording. Something I did not get to do with the p900

If you are set on using an all in one build/bridge camera option, I would say the best option with zoom in low light is the Sony RX10. Naturally, your best bet in low light is to get an interchangeable lens camera with a larger sensor as the larger the sensor the better the low light ability, but let me know if you have any questions!
Thank you for your review! I just have one quick question. You said in your video it's best to format the card each time after deleting the images. I have the P950 and see the format card option but it is not highlighted and when I scroll down to format the card the format card option is skipped. How can I get the format card option highlighted so I have the option to format? Thank you!
If the card is in the camera, and you are on a manual mode like P, it will not allow you to format it?
Never delete pictures on your computer. You format the card with the camera and it will delete the pictures.

If you don’t want anything bulky, definitely go with the Panasonic FZ300!

Thank you for this video. It was really helpful. I recently just bought a p950. I’m still learning a lot. One thing I don’t really understand is that when I switch the manual focus, the camera seems to zoom in a little. Then when I press the shutter to take a picture it zooms back out. What’s the reasoning for this? Thanks.
This is a manual focus assist feature. It is zooming in so you can be sure what you want to focus on is truly in focus, because from far back it is hard to tell on a 3 inch screen. Great question!

How do we remove the UV filter. I see some moisture in the inside of my cam”s UV filter and want to clean it however I can’t figure out how to remove it.
If there is a UV filter on the camera (it doesn’t come with one on it, you would have to put it on yourself), it is screw on/off. If the filter was put on too tightly, you can try using grippy gloves or a rubber band to help.

I am trying to review the pictures I've taken (on the SD card)
The manual says to "Turn the mode dial to PLAY. The most recently recorded image will be displayed in the LCD monitor."
There is NO PLAY option on the mode dial.
How do I review my pictures?
Correct, there is no play option on the mode dial. There is a play button on the back of the camera though that will allow you to see your photos!
I recently purchased a Nikon coolpix 950. After coming from a cannon 70D I am finding this camera.confusing. Do you have a video that goes into more detail on using this camera aside from talking about the camera set up and features. I find it so different from my canon 7D and need more of a tutorial of how things work in the various dial settings such as P, S, A, and Manual.also U and camera custom. I seed a video that shows what you can achieve using these various settings. Do you have additional user instruction videos available? Thank you
The 2 big things to adjust to is the fact that Nikon and Canon work in reverse from each other when it comes to layout, so adjusting to the new layout of a Nikon can take some time. The other thing to adjust to is that this is a bridge camera that is limited to its build. With your Canon having interchangeable lenses and a larger sensor, there was a lot more options and forgiveness when it comes to exposure and quality. However, the P, A(Av), S(Tv) and M modes function the same way on every camera, but because it is a bridge camera, it does limit your aperture/shutter speed/ISO options. If you have any specific questions, I am happy to help. Otherwise, practice really does make perfect! Trial and Error, even with todays cameras, is still helpful when learning a new camera.

Hi. Best video on P950! Thanks. I follow your instructions about P setting then Menu then go to AF Area Mode and then Subject Tracking. When I would hit subject tracking it reverted to AF area mode. Now in P mode it skips over AF area mode and Autofocus mode so I can't even get to Subject Tracking???? Help! Please.
For subject tracking to properly work, it needs to track through the entire area of the screen. To get a specific point back, you have to turn off tracking or reset the settings.

I have just had a P950 upgrade from the P900. At the moment I am really struggling to connect to Snapbridge as I cannot get the camera and Android phone to pair via Bluetooth.
Going through the menu I cannot get the camera to stop on "pairing". I do not have a ops manual either. Can anyone offer any advice please.

why does it take so long to take photo after photo like u take a photo it goes to black screen for a sec then you can take photo again u can just keep taking photos unless your on burst then u have to wait again for longer
Ijust purchased this camera and in the lower left corner is a flashing red circle with what looks to be an L in the middle. Is this a low battery warning?
That would actually be a clock. The camera would like you to set the date and time and then it should go away! Sorry it took so long for me to answer!
Hello, great video, very useful informatrion! What I'm missing: Details about the HDMI functions/options. I'm interest in using an external monitor in live mode (photo and video), esp. for sky photos from a tripoid using a remote control to take photos/videos. Looking thru the viewfinder makes no sense because it moves the camera, and it is incomfortable at the used angles. The build-in display, on the other hand, is too small and its resulution is not sufficient to check if the pictures are really sharp. My question: At which max. resolutions (pixels) can I use external monitors via HDMI in live view a) to shoot photos resp. b) for shooting videos. Thanks!
I imagine you wouldn't want to do more than 4K resolution equivalent, but I would reach out to Nikon themselves for more info!

Just got the Panasonic DC- FZ80. Unfortunately I didn’t find your post first. I followed the instructions given for setting the different options on the camera while set in Ai pluse mode. The instructor finished and effortlessly got out of the menu and ready to take photos. I’m now unable to get out of the menu he lead me into. Is there any way to reset and start over. This was a surprise gift for my retirement and i’d really like to be able to use it. HELP
Hello Michelle! Congrats on your retirement! You can reset your camera to factory settings by putting your mode dial to P>then go to Menu>go to the wrench symbol on the left>all the way down the set up menu is Reset All on the last page.

Is it possible to change AF to MF in birdwatching mode?
You may be able to by using the rear switch, however, Nikon users are saying the bird watching mode is pre set so it is set to continuous focus.
Hi, I am interested in buying one of this camera, it seems like my Nikon D750 with the 600mm could not catch the full size of the moon, in your video, you mentioned that you would definitely would not use the Digital Zoom...
Is there is a specific reason why it is not advisable to add in more digital zoom?
I was told that the censor of this camera is just as big as our handphone camera and it is rather like a point and shoot camera.
If not the digital zoom option, would it be better to get the P1000?

With a full frame camera, you would really need teleconverters to make it work but then you are dealing with a lot and heavy gear! The smaller sensor you have, the greater distance you can go with less gear, BUT it does effect the quality. Therefore, on this half inch sensor, you have the optical zoom which is a natural magnification. The digital zoom crops in on the pixels of the sensor so you are getting less and less clarity the more digital zoom you use. The sensor of this camera is actually quite a bit bigger than our cell phone cameras, so it does give you a bit more freedom in its natural abilities.
If you do want more natural zoom, I do absolutely recommend the P1000. I was happier with the P1000 myself over the P950 personally.
nothing wrong with digital zoom, cropping a photo is basically the same. It just depends on the resolution and clarity of the original data how much you can digitally zoom before the image quality drops significantly.
I use often intentionally the 4k60 crop mode on my APS-C (crop....) camera which is digital zoom, gives me on a 150-600mm lens 300-1200mm in a fast 1:1 pixel readout and tack sharp. Just enough light, so lower ISO is needed
And yes, i easily get at 600mm without crop to the point atmospheric and heat haze is lowering image quality much more than the lens is capable of.
I would not recommend any of those cameras
Can you tell me how to change seconds for interval timer? I am able to change minutes. Even though I can get seconds highlighted and have the up and down arrows I can't change it from 30 seconds.
How many minutes do you have listed when trying to change seconds?
@@Shutterbug101 When I have 1 or more minutes set I can set the seconds to 0 or 30 seconds...no in between. With 0 minutes I can only do 30 seconds. I have since bought an intervalometer so I can do a few seconds between shots. It would be nice not to have to use an extra piece of equipment.
From what I am hearing from my Nikon rep, they kept it simple with this model and limited it to 30 second brackets. Glad you got the intervalometer, that's what he recommended!
hi, i have a question... When i'm trying to do the star tracks, i always get way over exposered pictures.... what am i doing wrong?
How long are your exposure times? Also is the moon lit up at all during the times your trying?
Am frustrated by the menu. When I access menu the options given not always the same eg sometimes under wireless option I get Bluetooth & Restore default settings and not the choices you show on your CZcams. Then I presume I change some setting I am unaware of & the options change to those you show. No idea why. Frustrating
On your mode dial, are you set to a manual option, like P for Program? This will show you all menu items and options.

Hi quick question. I just purchased camera I know it doesn't have a memory card in it I ordered that, but does that mean to zoom won't work without the card? I mean I can turn it on go thru the programs and menus and everything, it just won't zoom and the battery is full. Great Vid.
This is correct. Nikon, with most of their cameras, limit functionality when there is no card or extremely low battery, including the zoom function. Once you get a card in it, you won’t have any problem using zoom!

Newbie in photography . Could you suggest a camera that could shoot the moon and great with low light shooting.
While this camera gets great moon shots, the low light images are not so great. If you want great quality in low light but want the distance for the moon, I would look into the Panasonic Gx85 or the Olympus E-M10 IV with a zoom lens.

How do I get rid of the green frames in the view finder
The green squares indicate where it is autofocusing. To control the focus yourself, switch to manual focus and there will no longer be green squares.
Between this Nikon P950 and the Canon SX70 HS, which one would you pick for bird pictures?
Canon SX70 HS if it really has to be a bridge camera. Just not really recommended to buy an old camera nowadays considering more and more throw out affordable IBIS, dual gain ISO, 4k120 slowmo etc. Not the P950 or the SX70 does good slowmotion, has good AF, stabiliser or so.
You are for sure more happy with something more modern, even if its just a 2nd hand EOS-M camera and the lenses you need.
Otherwise i would recommend a Canon R10 or R50 (budget) or even R7 (best value for money in Canon APS-C) or R8 (best value for money in full frame territory) and depending on your needs either one or multiple of those lenses:
- RF 100-400 (160-800mm)
- RF 800 or 600mm F11 (1280-2500mm)
- RF S 18-150 (effective 28-500mm) at best purchased as kit if the 18-150 is wanted.
- RF 50 1.8 on budget for portrait, RF 35mm if you can afford it for a stabilised, small and fast 50mm equivalent
- RF S 18-45.... yeah its bad compared to any other RF lens, but its super compact and useful if you want it small and light,
The thing is.... in long term when your expectations rise... you will be desperately looking towards full frame (so 2000$+ for body only when you want something really good)
Do you have another camera or are you depending on the P950 or SX70 alone? If you have a camera for regular photo and videography in normal focal lengths and the Nikon or Canon for wildlife/birds mainly.... i would probably suggest the P950 or P1000 if you want it just "small" with supertele reach.
I have a few things uploaded with a RF 800 F11 and a Sigma 150-600C (very affordable supertele prime and zoom) and i can absolutely recommend you, get something better, at least newer than the P950 or SX70 HS.
Do not focus on the highest reach possible, its useless except to brag about the zoom, for the best bird and wildlife shots you still need a decent distance, too far away and its useless to take a "upclose" photo, at best you get away with a panorama/habitat shot and small subject.
I made this mistake, began proper wildlife with a 800mm lens after i was too much annoyed by a 15 year old 75-300 IS USM lens, 800mm are nice for birding, especially the small ones. But my best wildlife shot i made with the 150-600mm Sigma lens at only 300mm (so 480mm effectively) like 2 meters away where a songbird landed on a branch where i sat and waited.

If you are set on using a camera and you don't mind not getting tack sharp photos, I would suggest the Nikon P1000, otherwise you may get better and clearer results by investing in telescopes and a camera to mount to it.
Hi Shutterbug, Fist off thank you for all your informative videos. My P950 came with a package deal including 4 "Macro lens" How do they work? I tried one and it just didn't seem to focus.
When using macro tubes or front element extensions the camera can not focus anymore at infinity, you have to get very close in some cases.
I would rather recommend a longer distance to the subject and using a longer focal length without any "macro lens", thats how you can use "macro" photography the best on P950/P1000

Lens Cap came with it. What I recommend is to also purchase an elastic Cap Keeper. So easy to know exactly where it is.

When you get it to 2000mm how do you get to telescope as it won’t go past the 2000mm
In the menu, you will have to turn on the digital zoom feature. Keep in mind when going past 2000mm, the quality will be less clear.

Hi ... Trying to take a photo with my p950 the other day at a gig and I couldn't get a decent shot ....I kept seeing green boxes moving around like it was doing something.... And then it took a pic but they come out blurry 🤷 and ideas
Its a bad camera, why would anybody buy a P950/P1000 these days except its super cheap 2nd hand?
