I have a P1000 and I think your review is right-on true, great job!
To design a camera with P1000 zoom characteristics for a full-sized sensor would necessitate impossibly large dimensions and weight, so the P1000
needs to be respected for what it is, rather than what it is not. You have made this point quite well in this video.

  • @Lepewhi
    @Lepewhi Před 5 lety +40

I have two thoughts on this camera, and superzooms in general. One, I can see having a camera like this for wildlife, not many of us can afford to purchase a lens that can compete with the reach of these cameras. And if we could, who wants to lug it around on a hike. My other thought is, as we moved from film photography(which the images weren't always stellar, but we accepted them. We expect perfection from digital images and pixel peep in order to make sure that there is no sign of noise. Me personally, don't mind a bit of noise if it's not offensive. With small sensor cameras, you will get more noise than a larger sensor camera, that's just the tradeoff, but you can reach the picture that you want to shoot. I'd rather have the image with a bit of noise than not having it. Plus, I think these cameras are more for outside use, so low light shouldn't be a problem in most cases. Just my person thoughts.

I’ve owned this camera for a few months in addition to a full frame DSLR. I agree with almost everything in your review. I have a 400mm full frame lens but I still find I can never get close enough like I can with the P1000, even cropping. So I use the P1000 for pictures I couldn’t otherwise get because wildlife and birds are just too far away. I’ve become pretty good at handholding it zoomed in, it just took practice.

Your assessment is probably the most honest, the most unbiased and fair assessment I’ve watched. The P1000 was a perfect fit for my purposes, this being my first quality camera. I purchased it as a useful tool and a entertaining hobby. Exposure to the Nikon P1000 has upped my knowledge of the befits of using manual modes. I tend to be getting out much more with this camera, I’ve been planing trips and looking for shots that I was previously unable to capture. No camera is able to please everyone, as you mentioned it really depends on ones expectations and desires. I was also limited on the size of my pocket book, the Nikon P1000 was for me the best BANG! FOR THE BUCK. Thanks for another great review.

yep I also got into photography because of a superzoom. But for me it's an old Canon Sx50 from my mother wich I am borrowing all the time for taking bird pictures lol. Just upgraded to a Nikon D500 (thanks again mom!) and a Tamron 150-600mm (my bank account did not like that) wich are in the process of shipping right now. Can't wait for them to arrive but I'll never forget my trusty superzoom!

I think you just made me decide to go for it. I know there are cameras that will get me better quality shots, but I'm not a professional and I'd rather have the zoom capability here in the mountains to stalk all the animals. :) My pictures just go on Instagram, so I'm OK sacrificing some quality.

@@thetinycathouse Thats wonderful, I know that I’ve really enjoyed my P1000 and I’ve been able to take shots of wildlife, plants and insects that were way to far away to get any other way other than with a mega zoom, dragon fly’s are impossible to sneak up on, but I’ve gotten shots from 15 to 20 feet away, they look as good as any macro’s that I’ve seen on the web. where I can even see the hairs and veins in the wings, the shots look great. Yes one can find higher pixel photos but it requires a magnifying glass or computer app to see the differences, IMHO. Steve.

The zoom is unparrelled and great fun to use. Great review! I have been using the D80 for 10 years, but got the P1000 for this past Xmas. I have to honestly say that I never pull out my D80 unless it's for Super Macro anymore. I absolutely love my P1000 to the point that if I leave the house without it, I feel sick. I have gotten some of the most incredible shots and video footage, and I am a total amateur; this camera deserves better than me. It has inspired me to learn more about photography, all the minute details that I never understood before, such as ISO, exposure, various shooting techniques, etc.... I feel that even an accomplished photographer would benefit from adding this gem to their camera collection. I love being able to see the rings of Saturn and the stripes on Jupiter with it. The color capture ability, to get the true sunrise and sunset colors my eyes see...that alone is worth the price of this camera. Blows my mind on a daily basis, all the incredible details I could be missing from afar, but this camera allows me to see. And I take photos of EVERYTHING in my path. The only drawback is the weight, it makes my hands go numb lol. I had to purchase the hand grip strap that allows me to still hold it but flex my fingers without fear of dropping it. And I agree on the tripod, I am working on a prototype that will attach to most heavy duty tripods to help stabilize this monster when fully zoomed out. As well, I do suggest purchasing a separate wall charger and extra batteries, as I DO run my batteries out of life, sometimes 2-3 batteries a day. So, I have 6 batteries total...just in case. Happy Shooting Y'all! #iWillShootYouWithMyCamera this is my hashtag on IG

For a do-everything camera, you can't beat it. My first digital camera was a Nikon Coolpix 5700 which garnered me some very nice images. I sold that camera but years later reacquired one to have as a memento.
I use point and shoot more than my Dslr which says a lot for how much manufacturers can cram into a small package. Long focal length quickly loses its appeal unless you need that feature.
I will be getting one of these when cheaper on the used market simply to have a long lens when needed, which isn't often.

No one sees the difference in the quality of my images which camera I have ever used. A little more weight to bring - but it's certainly worth it. When you need it, it´s there and delivers stunning results.

Great rebraceview on the P1000. I've had mine since it was released in September, and am still learning new things about it every time out with it. I'm pretty much a nature shooter, so I've really had no big problems other than the buffer as you mentioned, and the slow zoom lag. I did see a CZcams video today on how to build a brace to better support the lens just behind the focus ring so that it doesn't put so much stress on the bottom of the camera where it couples with the tripod mount. I subscribed to your channel, and am looking forward to more great vids...Happy Shooting.

I am not a professional photographer, I am a professional aircraft pilot. Taking photos while flying is why I became the owner of a P950 and a P1000. Point and shoot satisfies my needs. The Canon I had frustrated me. I lost too many photos when the auto focus reacted to the aircraft windows resulting to out of focus images. The P950 and the P1000 have both Auto Focus (AF) and Manual Focus (MF). The incredible zoom lens is the second selling point. I have used these cameras world wide, from Alaska to Africa. I am satisfied with the results. The image quality is excellent. I have not yet learned all of the features that this device possesses but I can get good results and learn as I go. A good cross chest carrying strap is a must and a tripod (not mono pod) is a plus.

My comprise is the Sony RX10 IV. It doesn’t have the zoom of the P1000 but the 600mm equivalent is more than adequate for my needs. Most of all, the performance of this camera is phenomenal. Very versatile unit from Macro to Superzoom and as good a pic quality as any other point & shoot for close to mid ranges. I think it's great that you guys did this review. It was a very even-handed review, my respect. IMO the photography community as a whole can be a little too snobbish for its own good.
I think what most people should realize, is that this camera is generally not meant for people who have shot with DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. It will generally be bought by people who want to get into photography or who want a little more than what a point-and-shoot offers, but who don't want to go all the way to a DSLR or mirrorless system.
Some very lovely shots. Besides the obvious long-range shots, what most impressed me were the macro-ish shots of bugs (21:15). Typically macro suffers from too shallow DoF, but not this camera!

"I think what most people should realize, is that this camera is generally not meant for people who have shot with DSLRs and mirrorless cameras."
Very true ... I'm a long time DSLR user and I just can't imagine using such a camera. As I usually shoot at wide and standard angles and because I favor image quality over focal length range, these huge zooms have zero appeal to me.
The size of the camera is also a big turn off, I just can't imagine using this on a trip or for extended periods of time.
More power to you if this fulfills your camera needs ... ... no snobbiness intended. ;o)

Best review of this camera. The only one I’ve seen by a pro that didn’t treat it as a novelty and actually tries to understand how people actually use this camera. Took it seriously and actually spent a reasonable amount of time shooting with it. I likely will buy one of these. It won’t be my first, or even my second, camera but for some situations nothing else will work.

    Excellent review. Thank-you.
I really wanted to like this camera. I had it in my amazon basket a little before it was actually available and agonized over it. In the end, I canceled before it shipped. The idea of a 3000mm zoom for perching, small birds is very appealing. But, I am a bear for IQ and a long time user of an EF600mm f/4.0 IS lens and, in my heart, knew that this sensor could not deliver IQ I would be content with over the long term. It still intrigues me but I think it would be a mistake for me to buy this camera. Probably a blast to play with for a few days but . . . .

Outstanding review by an expert! The best review of ANY camera I have researched to date bar none. The P1000 is at a cost point where, for me, it is "nice to have around" for it's capabilities. You, as an expert, were able to work around it's limitations and your slide show proved it. To me, there is no perfect anything, for every/any conceivable situation or application. It's why we have an abundance of choices for most everything. I definitely subscribed to your channel and thank you for all the time and effort you have put forth to help me, the unknowing, enjoy my niche in the "hobby". Keep up the good, hell, great work "TheSnapChick"! May all your dreams come true.

I really appreciate you putting up this review. Theres a lot of negativity towards this camera, mostly because of the small sensor, but this review is good for someone who has accepted the cameras flaws and still wants to explore what it has to offer without constantly being reminded of how "horrible" it is. The zoom function is definitely the highlight of it.

Great job on the review Leigh! It often makes me wonder how many 'takes' you need for a long review such as this, and yes, I know the amount of editing, so again, great job! I'll be sticking to my D750, but would't mind renting such a camera, so that may happen in the future. One individual I know that has the P900 lives high above the water on an inlet, and he gets some fabulous shots of cruise ships, beautiful sunrises, birds, whales and oh so lovely sunsets! I class myself as an enthusiast Landscape photographer, where this would be great for those times I'm 50 miles in off the Alaska Highway, but then that was more when I was younger, and won't be doing it so much anymore, but still will be capturing the landscapes on my travels.

A very fair and unbiased review. I purchased the p900 and have used it occasionally. The price was high but not as high as some of Nikon zoom or prime lenses. As a professional, I would agree it would not be for you but as an advanced amateur, who has limited funds to spend on “specialty “ items that are not used frequently, it suffices.

Best review of the camera yet from a professional. I like that you are realistic about the camera instead of instantly shutting it down because of the price and more amateur pedigree. I'm ready to buy it after using a friend's model for a weekend. It does thngs nothing else does. It's a great additional camera for professional situations. Agree that macro is amazing. I love my P1000 for many reasons you did not consider. It's an ALWAYS Ready at ANY DISTANCE point-and-shoot. It has threads for a circular polarizer filter, which is CRITICAL for lush saturated images and water-shots. It has a a "bird" setting which pinpoints the focus on the bird rather the unwanted branches in the foreground. It quickly switches from auto to manual focus without having to click through annoying menus. For the money, it does everything I ask it to do. The only thing that occasionally annoys me is incorrect tint shifting during low lighting, or scenes with heavily tinted backgrounds. My P1000 allows me to takes shots that would otherwise be impossible with my meager skills and budget. :)

Nice review. I've had my P1000 for months but haven't been able to get out and play. My "go to" for the past several years is a P900 and it's simply fun and no regrets on the spend whatsoever. When I leave my home I don't carry a camera that requires it's own insurance policy! Fun is fun and zoom adds more fun to fun, plain and simple. I'll add one perspective that I rarely see or hear in reviews of "superzoom" point and shoot cameras. Bonus pictures...First day out in the big city with the new P900, new bag, new tripod....Woohoo! I'm not a photographer (landscaper) but I do enjoy my snapshots. Spotted a nice high-rise condo building and grabbed some shots. I didn't exploit the zoom as I wanted to capture the surroundings. Once home I uploaded pics to my computer for review and found a lot of junk with a few gems. The condo shots revealed several window washers on scaffolds that I couldn't see in broad daylight. I don't think I shot past 7-800mm and wow! Bonus pictures, so cool. So fun.

This was a nice balanced review, I found myself really regretting selling my P1000, I missed some great video opportunities, which I knew I could've filmed with that awesome zoom, suffice to say I've ordered another P1000, quality is important, but in my opinion content is king on CZcams, and the P1000 has the reach to capture interesting content.

I am the currently using the Lumix FZ300/FZ330, and although I have nowhere near the 3000mm zoom range of the P1000, I've found it to be perfectly adequate for my needs. I personally wouldn't need the insanely long zoom. But having the one camera and lens in one neat package is important because I'm disabled, so carrying lots of gear with me is impractical. Fantastic review by the way. Very honest.

Fantastic and impressive camera for what it is, looking at the images I wouldn't want it, not sharp enough for me, I am using either D850 or a6300 for travel and both just produce far better results. I might not get the focal flexibility I could get on the P1000 but in most cases I don't really need so much zoom anyways. Good for general user but not for me and my standards.

As a former pro photographer and college instructor, Your presentation was Excellent! Most youtubers rush thru their videos to make them shorter. You took the time to explain your points without sounding rushed. Even during your moments of excitement, you did not become unintelligible. So Thank you very much for that! I looked at your video because I am window shopping for a suitable "vacation" camera for a loved one who doesn't share my love of pro level dSLRs. Your review was excellent and thorough but I realize now the camera isn't right for them. It could be if they were a mini-me version of myself but they are not. Any chance you reviewed the Canon SX70 HS?

Great video. I used to have a crap load of Lenses for my Nikon DSLR some 15 years ago. From Wide angle, right up to 300mm with 2x attachments. Used to knacker me out carting all that stuff about too.
Now I just have a small bridge camera. But I'm looking to get something slightly larger. And better. So I've been looking at the P1000 as it hits the "sweet spot" for me.
However. I did find it interesting your comment about "playing a game of monopoly" while it zoomed in.
But I ask you. How long did it take to do that? 5 seconds or so? Maybe? Certainly less than 10 seconds.
    Now picture this.
You're out with your DSLR. You have your ?? to 500mm zoom lens on your camera. You've also got, for example, a 1500mm fixed lens in your bag.
You see some beast in the distance that you need your 1500mm lens for.
How long will it take you to change the lenses over? Safely. 2 minutes? 3 minutes. Swapping the lenses over and putting everything back safely.
And by the time you've done that, that beast you wanted to take a photo' of, has all but gone.
With any bridge camera, especially this one, that beast is still going to be there after you've zoomed right up to it.
