  • Fellow Legends, welcome! Today we discuss arguably one of the best social constructs i have heard of in recent memory. That's right, today we're talking about making holes, and why this should be implemented in civilian society. This also compares to using, "Hold!" in SCA and other sword fighting groups, which I already have familiarity with. I absolutely loved this. You should definitely check out The Fat Electrician and the original video as well to show some support for the source material!

Mostly "Make a hole" is called by anyone of any rank but you expect there to be a reason behind it. Mostly used during ruck marches, if there's a vehicle behind the formation you call it to let the vehicle through. Unfortunately awhile back it was considered "crude" or whatever by someone that was probably told it was offensive by one person and we've been told to use alternate language like "vehicle from the rear", "make way", etc....

When I was in jrotc we (the staff) and instructors used this alot bc the rest of the cadets would just stand there but if one of us said make a hole they would move, and they wouldn't know how to properly put their uniform together
Edit: any cadet can call it though not just staff or instructors

I've used this IRL and it's amazing how well it works despite civvies. I suppose it helps if you're wearing the store's uniform XD
I have also found myself completely replacing pointing with knifehanding.
Also also, on the topic of activating people's service neurons, I play Space Engineers as part of a battleship's crew and occasionally I will have to sound general quarters to get everyone ready for battle. We use the US Navy GQ alarm and script and record our sessions to post here on YT, so occasionally we'll get comments from ex-Navy guys who heard general quarters being sounded and immediately started looking for their boots before remembering they're retired XD

It's an absolute wonder how well they both work pretty much everywhere, bar corporate.
And when it comes to certain SE servers, I absolutely get the GQ activating those service neurons; I've heard a few stories of members of an SE battleship's crew trying to step to on instinct.
(Also, RIP Ravager. 'Twas a wonderful ship to serve alongside)

My cousin served in the Navy (aircraft mechanic on USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70)). When he got out he downloaded the General Quarters alarm on his phone to use as his morning alarm clock. He said that for the first few weeks he'd have his shoes on and be downstairs wondering why he was standing in a kitchen before he was awake enough to remember he was at home. Although his wife (girlfriend at the time) didn't think waking up to "BWANG BWANG BWANG BWANG GENERAL QUARTERS GENERAL QUARTERS" at maximum volume was as funny as he did.

"Make a hole!" is not rank dependent, but is only used for either those doing actual work related movement or the passage of someone of higher rank.
Corpsmen responding to a medical emergency, repair techs responding to a high priority system fail, movement of large supplies and massive personnel relocations, etc. are classic examples. It's not called just because someone is "inconveniencing" you.

    • @pauld6967
      @pauld6967 Před 5 měsíci +2

Well,......not "only used" ..... there have been plenty of times it has been used when the group is being inconvenient & they wouldn't have a way of knowing you were doing it for expediency.
You don't want to abuse it because if that is found to be the case, being shunned will be the least of your problems.
There are also times the phrase has been used by people just trying to be jerks. Fortunately, in my experience the use by jerks has been pretty rare.

One thing to keep in mind is that the military both loves group punishments and punishing everyone remotely involved in any screw up. If someone is late to an important work function in the military, their CO is going to want the name of every screw up that was involved in said person being late.

    • @pauld6967
      @pauld6967 Před 4 měsíci

      @@ShaggyRogers1 Hmm, an interesting notion.
Never once in my many years of service did I ever think about "mass punishment" in connection with calling for a hole to be made or participating in making a hole for another.
The only thing I thought about when getting out of the way was how annoyed I would be if I was the 'man on a mission' & a bunch of lollygaggers were blocking the hallway/passageway or stairwell/ladderway.

As a civilian, when I use to work in a warehouse, I'd use the phrase "Make a Hole!" to get people out of my way when I have a large box or item in my hand and I needed to get my coworkers out of my way. I picked it up from my father who was a US Navy Machinist. They didn't understand it the first couple of times but it became semi-normal back there. Very useful when we have pallet jacks too coming through, powered or manual. Came in handy. Kinda miss being able to use it at my current job.

Not rank dependent, but rank is usually the main factor. The other main factor is mission. Marines use both "make a hole!" and "gangway!", the naval variant.

  • @marklittrell3202

There is a "purpose" aspect to make a hole. You're not just jumping a line. If you're lollygagging or rubbernecking, you dont get to use it. If you're moving with a purpose and have something to do that takes you past the nonserious loiterers, you get to use it. Its not rank based, but rather task andintent based, and the social participants of this (the soldiers) have had the discipline and duty drilled into them to make this possible. It really wouldnt work without some serious shared bootcamp experience. It doesnt work in random civvy society.
PS if somebody blocks the grocery aisle, I approach on my side and say Excuse me please (or if they arent even close I push their cart to the side). You can be polite without being a social prisoner.

  • @Restlessmedic

Speaking from experience on Navy ships, if someone is trying to get through and says that, your back immediately goes against the bulkhead and whoever said it moves through without incident.

In my shop I use a civilian friendly version of "coming through". They learn it and it makes sense to them. If they hear, coming through, they pick a side and get to it because I'm literally coming through the middle and I'm in a hurry and don't have time. Basically a polite version of "get out of my way"

It’s not always rank dependen, it can be, but usually for a vehicle, or equipment or whatever coming, or when someone is doing something important/time critical could be doc, some one delivering a message, being critical tools or parts, supplies. Etc, an important maintenance action is happening/needs too, and they on their way. And yeah, everyone just moves out of the way, as what they are doing is more important, at that instant than almost everything else, in that area. Or someone who isn’t the person trying to get through. Will say that, to open it for them, if they see/know they are coming and need through now. Save them that extra few seconds maybe.

in the military when someone says make a hole, it means move the fuck out of way cuz you're in the way. they don't see this when you're out in the yard or something like that. they say this when you're in the hallway or a passageway. or I can get crowded with people. so when does someone hurt andI mean you get the fuck out of the way.

As somebody who used to work in retail for like 7 plus years, being able to just say make a hole without sounding like a complete prick would have made a lot of my days a lot easier. Because I was just trying to go about doing my business getting shit done, but whenever somebody would literally just stopped in the middle of the freaking grocery aisle to shoot the shit, I'm like "hey I need to get through can you please move?" And then they would look at me like I was a freaking villain.
Ugh it peeved me off something fierce.

And the rare occasion I need to say something, I will and do, I’m polite, but brief, please move, so I can get by. They do. And say sorry, nothing else, tell no worries, but I need to get by and you were blocking the aisle. Then I walk off, haha, I don’t care if they are offended or mad. That’s a them problem. I got shit to do, and they are in my way, I didn’t curse or say bad/untrue things, they don’t like it. They can try to something about it.

When I need to get through people I just run and slide. Most older people think I tripped and move out of the way. Younger people move out of fear of impact and, I get to have some fun and act like an idiot for a bit. I'm gunna hate when I'm 30+ and can't drop quickly without consequence.

Now, if they don’t move. When I’ve been polite, then they get the command to move, in a stern. Low, conversational voice. Don’t raise my voice at all, they always have. And none has ever said a single word to me. Or behind my back while I’m still in hearing range. I don’t care, I asked once, politely, waited a few seconds. No response. Then I tell them.

And oh. It does work at times out here in the civilian world, I been out almost 14 years, sometimes still slips out. And usually guys will move, haha. But I’m lucky, I guess just the way I look and carry myself, out in stores and stuff, I just walk, am polite, but if I’m walking, and I walk on the right side of aisles and what not, and people are in the way. They almost always get out of the way, before I’m there, I’m only 5’9” haha, but I walk with a purpose I don’t look mad, a mostly neutral look/expression. But they just move, my ex’s have said it’s probably how I carry myself and my neutral look, and cold eyes, not much makes me honestly laugh. Or mad, or sad, or anything, very things do stuff like that to me. Always been like that since I can remember, some is from things I’ve seen and been through as a kid, and others just natural. I never really talked much in person. Unless something I really like/interested. I don’t make small talk. Been told by a Finn, I’m a lot like them, when I make eye contact. If a stranger, they look away, quickly. Even on Black Friday. The rare times I go out for a specific thing that’s actually a really good deal and I need/want, I typically have a 3-4 bubble around me, where I just walk. And people move, I don’t say anything.

If they leave room in the aisle by just moving over it’s okay to me but I have just not gone down aisles that have what I need in them if I see it and will just move to the next item so make a hole should just be a normal thing. Though from where I’m from just loudly saying excuse me does work too but not many do that because the “I don’t want to be rude” thing will appear and they will stand there awkwardly till they move
