  • Fellow Legends, welcome! Today we dive into another amazing Fat Electrician video, this time where we discuss when the United States of America dropped $300 million to design the future of rifles for the military. It's always a good day when you hear about a story where Uncle Sam writes someone a blank check to develop something for the military. What do you think about some of the designs? Were you ever able to work with one of these designs? Do you think that any of these designs could have become the new gold standard? I absolutely loved watching this, seeing The Fat Electrician bring us great military history brings a special kind of joy to my life. If you liked this video as much as I did then I do absolutely recommend you go and check out the original video to show some support for the source material!

    Asked my cousin, who's a Marine, to describe a bullet in the most Marine terms possible.

    I'm former military. I've seen square pegs in round holes and soldier pegs in skanky methed out hooker holes. If you can fit it, even if it takes a hammer, we will get it in there.
    Good example, in 2005 at a training class on flying Raven Drones, the instructor reached the point of every class where a teacher will ask "Does anyone have a question?" Simultaneously all 10 of us students raised our hands and when the instructor calls on one of us, the question asked was "can we replace the side camera with a small explosive charge?" He answered no and called on the next guy who asked "But what if the explosive only weighed 1lb and was a shaped and directional?" The instructor had a slightly horrified look on his face as he answered no and every other hand went down. Fast-forward 8 months, I'm not saying someone tried it anyways, but there may be an unofficial drone kill in Afghanistan.

      Flechettes and sabot slugs for shotguns?
      I always felt like that Shotguns with these kinds of ammunitions would be the best in a "gunplay simulator" where characters are wearing "irl heavy armor" like in Payday 2, but as we know, being a thicc boi in the battlefield irl is not very useful since you are slow and carrying a lot of weight, and your armor may stop a lot of bullets but there are a lot of things that can go through it.
      A game with these kinds of ammunition would make me feel like playing an ancestor of a space marine...

    • @Shinransa
      @Shinransa Před 9 měsíci +10

      See, the problem with that is Flechette 12 gauge is basically worthless and will struggle to effectively penetrate soft armor and even if they do they won't penetrate further than the fins. They're a novelty round like Dragon's Breath. Pretty sure most of the myths about their effectiveness were spread by legislators wanting to ban these and video games making them broken. On the other hand, sabot slugs are pretty strong.

    • @ThatGuyOrby
      @ThatGuyOrby Před 8 měsíci +5

      @@FriendlyArchpriest Yeah more or less on point here. There's no functional reason to weigh down troops with all that weight in an attempt to make them virtually walking tanks, just give them enough armor to give them a reasonable chance of surviving a few rounds and you're good. We already have things meant to soak up rounds in their place. They're called Armored Vehicles and they're still vulnerable to some things, just less things than the squishy boys inside XD

    So, through personal testing, 12" chop saw blades do not fit on the head of a weed eater. However, Project Farm has shown (and tested) "brush blades" that are designed to fit on the head shaft of a straight shaft trimmer.

    You have no idea how often the idea "hey, why don't we go check with the actual boots on the ground about this?" either comes to my mind with a number of these projects, or just the idea of "find the smartest Marine/Sailor/Pilot/Soldier/Whateverthespaceforcefolksarecalled around and get their input" floats up. Cause the staggering amount of times I have seen something that is an interesting idea, get torn apart by ONE teeny tiny defect, makes the Death Star seem like a reasonably effective idea. Like seriously, just get a bunch of Crayon Nommers (Marines) or Spray Paint Huffers (Navy) or Paper Chompers (Airforce) or Glue Slurpers (Army) or . . . whatever the hell the Space Force guys are on . . . I think we'll say Vitamin Gummies on that one, and just sit them down and go "Okay, what would YOU like to see in a weapon" and just start listening to their insane ramblings. Like nine times out of ten you'll get something more solid than letting a bunch of Corpo big wigs who "know" what they're doing (they mostly really don't know what they're doing) design a weapon and just throw money at the problem. Cause no matter what generation, nor what year, or what capacity it is, there are always a number of "neat" ideas that can be quashed by "Just make the original better".

    Also funny story about scopes allowing more accuracy…they certainly do. Anyways, after the second battle of Fallujeah, the USMC was investigated for war crimes, as insurgents, fighters. Whatever we’re showing up with a terrifying amount of headshots…and it was believed, given our reputation that we were executing prisoners…no, no we just finally got ACOGS in larger numbers and issued, along with training and combat experience with them, dudes were pulling off 300m headshots in combat, like directed at that target, semi auto/single round hits…that’s what the investigation found, Marines are just that good, especially when given a good scope. And that’s just regular Marines, infantry types. I do remember on the KD range, after getting my ACOG…I could actually see my own shot trace in the air barely at 300m and see it really well at 500m I had 20/10 vision at the time, now I’m a lowly and sad 20/20 vision, I still can see it at 500m, but is much harder. Now that I’m older, and have had many different chemical types and objects put into my eyes forcefully, and after some bad accidents/impacts it degraded more than anything else caused. At the 500m line, once I got an ACOG, from about 300m all the way to the target, I could see my shot trace and knew if it would be hit/where I wanted or not right before it hit, so could adjust before the shot spotter was put in and ran back up.

    And oh right after and even during WWII the US military already tried basically all these options, just slightly lower tech. But duplex bullets, yep, flechettes, yep, like the saying goes, “there is nothing new under the sun” I don’t remember what it is in Latin. Where it came from, something like “blah, blah dead language words, sub sole.” Now the best one woulda been a crazy flechette in the G11. Or of AAI was smart, using 5.56 brass, they woulda made their gun fully compatible with current ammo, and actual improvements, and you can use the new special ammo for real. And small amounts of training enough so people get used to the performance, but need the high end stuff for basic things and make it as similar to the M-16 as possible in parts, simplicity, operation. Look and feel in general. That woulda won instantly if they did that. I know so many people talk shit about M-16’s/AR’s they are literally the best, most functional, accurate, modular, easiest to learn and use modern rifle that has ever been made, for mass production, people will be like oh AK…no, not even close. Yes more AK’s have been made and used, but they are not as capable of the same accuracy to give to anyone. With a short amount of basic training, and so easy to learn, also, with lighter recoil. Higher velocity, etc. in reality the M-16/AR is far superior in all ways but cost. And any accuracy issues, as in it’s not a high end civilian gun in that department can mostly be solved by using good ammo made to be extremely accurate. I qualified with M-16A2’s, iron sights all but my last 18 months in the USMC, I got expert every year but one, where I shot one point under because I messed up, haha. Every time but one, at 500m I put ten out of ten into the ten ring, with iron sights, and that was a good amount of my buddies too, so not just me, that’s with the M855, that is notoriously “inaccurate” are you ever gonna do tiny groups at that range, especially with iron sights, no, it’s not meant too, it’s meant to penetrate light barriers and soft body armor, aka flak jackets and “bullet proof” vests, and be able for a basically, but well trained serviceman to be able to hit the enemy out to 300m, and just regular Marines can do so easily at 500m, with iron sights so it’s honestly insanely hard to beat the M-16/M4 line in all categories along with 5.56 let alone to do so good enough to warrant the cost of switch, plenty of other things have been better in one or two ways in the almost 60 years of the M-16 and 5.56…but not better all around. And definitely not better enough to warrant the cost in time and money to warrant adopting, the current whatever fraud, waste abuse and graft rifle is no exception, let’s make it heavier than BAR, and only slightly increase performance over 7.62 Nato shooting tungsten AP, while making them adopt proprietary and marginally better stuff, if you wanted that, neck down the 7.62mm NATO brass to 7mm or 6.5, gove it a tungsten penetrator core equal in mass to the 7.62 AP core. But longer and skinnier, and a copper bullet around it, to get that lighter weight overall, and put it into a well built AR-10 that exists, even go with a piston driven one of you want. Guess what, you’d get a better marginal increase in performance, all across the board, but at a quarter of the cost and time, and retraining needed. Even better if you just used a 7.62mm sabot, as then you could still shoot 7.62mm Nato if you need too, or for cheaper training ammo. And the gun would have all the same controls, just be a little bigger and barely heavier.

    And yes I do have an ACOG…they are amazing and fantastic, low power optics. All you need on a 5.56 chambered AR, as the ACOG can outperform the ammo types. During my only and last deployment, with an ACOG, I ordered one, personal kind, same model as I carried, for my M-16A2 based AR, along with a flat top receiver to make it an A4 like one. Fantastic and fun lil “rifle” I say it that way. As it is a carbine in all ways but barrel length. But even then. It is carbine length to everything else that existed, until the M16 was a thing. Fun, handy, light and short, more than accurate enough, easily can stack rounds center mass at 500m with the carry handle back on, and get about a 1/3 smaller group at 500 with the ACOG. Can turn in 6-7” groups or so with surplus M855, usually to the larger side, or even 8-9” ten shot groups. Is that the most accurate? No, but that’s with surplus loaded to NATO specs, it’s not a sniper rifle, it’s a regular, run of the mill “modern” combat rifle, with normal ammo. Shooting prone. With the sling wrapped, it’s accurate enough to kill an enemy, that’s the entire purpose and reason it exists. If I want more accuracy, go with 77grain OTM’s…and almost halves that number, with a ten shot group. Best I squeezed out my bone stock bushmaster XM-15 full length barrel with a bush master flat top. Timney triggernpack, ACOG titanium firing pin, A4 hand guard. And a wrapped sling was 5” ten shot group with 77 grain OTM’s. Regular group with that is about 7” at 500m.

    I had a buddy who was in the army. He had a guy that took a Barret .50 cal sniper rifle and rigged it to fire from a belt box ment for the M2 Browning MG. It worked. Belt fed semiautomatic sniper rifle. Master Guns walked up to him and said "put it back. I am disappointed, but I'm also impressed". Proof that soldiers will be irresponsible if you give them the keys to the armory.

    As far as the saw blade-weed whacker question, it really depends on the models of both. some do actually fit, but even with that they don't really work amazingly well. The saw blade needs way more torque to do it's job than trim line does.

    9:40 ... my brain went straight to slippery dolphin, lol
    12:14 ... I have 2 3d printers. I can make an adapter... I don't have a circular saw blade, a weed whacker, or a desire to lose the grippers. However. If I did have those and some thicc polycarbonate armour I would absolutely be willing to do it for science. Naturally, in a safe manner.
    Part of me now wants to make ridiculous airsoft guns that confuse other players again. For example. What if the charging handle on an m4 was turned into a 30 bb mag. The forward assist turned into the mag release. The mag release turned into the trigger. And the mag just a box that insults you or something weird. Idk. I'd love to do something like that and let someone use it for a round.
    Or get a bunch of 1911 slides. Take the pin out. Make sure each hopup chamber has a bb in it. Then only use the mag for the gas. Effectively reload via swapping the slide, lol

  • @zackmuller2077
    @zackmuller2077 Před 8 měsíci +2

    Hey, Kip. In regards of 6.5 creedmore and .308, why don't you just split the difrence between the two? Go with either 7mm-08 (expensive option) or .260 Remington. Both are necked down .308 rounds but perform way better with less recoile. 7mm-08 is .308 necked down to 7mm and .260 Remington is .308 necked down to 6.5mm. Both have less drop, less wind drift and less recoil than .308. both also go up to 140 gr rounds with better performance compared to .308 150 gr rounds.
    Its just an option. I love both .308 and 6.5 creedmore, but I realy like the .260 Remington.

    Before people ask or start making fun of the Canadian military that they have the M134 optic...it's not. In 1990 Canada adopted the C7A1, it being the standard rifle in the late 90s, replacing all of the base/traditional C7 rifles and it has the C79 ELCAN. It has a better reticle than the M134, both sights are produced by ELCAN, but they're not the same. Besides that, we can all agree that the ACOG is a great optic a long with some others....it's just stupidly expensive!
