      "faithful adaptations"
I'm split with those because sure it's nice to have those but when you're making a movie or a show you need to change things or cut them, not everything can transfer over smoothly. On the other hand it's really annoying when an easy fix could have easily been used if they just followed the source

Makkari is easily the best speedster I’ve ever seen in a movie or tv show, the slow mo scenes are overdone now so seeing someone run in real time and having big impact with their hits was so good to see, it’s a shame she’s probably the character we are the least likely to get more of.
The deviant plot was a bit shit though, guy didn’t even have a name and wanted the same thing as the eternals in the end but Angelina Jolie ended the plot in about 2 seconds

I just came back from watching this movie, and I feel like I'm one of the few that actually loved this movie. I like all the characters and their dynamics and inter-conflicts with each other. I thought the action was really interesting compared to other MCU movies, since like Civil War, we have multiple superheros with unique powers from each other, going at it. The story, while nothing super unique still brought up a lot of interesting questions. I enjoy this movie way more than a lot of the movies in the MCU so far.

I swear every comment I see says “I must be one of the few who loved it” haha.. I honestly feel like I’m in the few who agrees with the critics.
The concepts were interesting, but the pacing was a total mess. Every other scene they seemed to add some new random subplot, and none of the payoffs felt like they had any weight since there was hardly any build.
    Spoiler:
One example, what even was the point of the lead deviant? He gained a higher intelligence, had the ability to absorb the eternals powers, then just died. We already knew the celestials were ruthless, so he didn’t really add anything. There was already too much going on with so many characters, it would’ve been better to just not include it.

The high concepts were great to think about too. And Ikarus' inability to kill Cersi made sense to me. He realized he loved her like she loved the people of earth. It has to do with the mythological character Kingo is based on, kingu who is like a general / right hand man to tiamut, and in mythology kingu flees during the battle in which tiamut dies. All of their names are inspired by mythological figures and those figures stories greatly shape the plot and the character decisions of the movie.

Bit hard to do that though, the MCU "Endgame" is known now. Everything is going to be a bit 'held back' in this current MCU arc, because they're doing the big build up again, where everything falls into each other for a big huge finale.
I wonder how well all this continuity stuff will hold up this time, because when Infinity War/Endgame happened, people rejoiced because of how well everything all tied into each other, people haven't seen that before over such a huge collection of movies. i think, at this point, marvel has painted itself into a corner. theyve done the epic final battle where the good army faces the bad army so many times now they feel like theyre underperforming if they dont. but not every final battle has to be that large-scale. look at the final battle of empire strikes back, where luke takes on vader. it wasnt epic because of special effects or world-threatening stakes, it was epic because it was PERSONAL. it was a culmination of dramatic tension between two characters. the stakes were grounded and small-scale. marvel has done this too. think of the winter soldier and civil war - the climax of each was simply cap vs bucky/cap vs iron man. it was light on cgi and "epicness" but you were actually invested in what happened. save the huge apocalyptic battles for the avengers movies, because those are in themselves a culmination of each "phase," that way it still feels meaningful. if you do it with every single movie regardless of whether or not it suits the story/characters, it just becomes another box to check.

just saw it today on disney plus, and i had heard some not so great things about it and even heard it was the MCUs first flop, but i actually enjoyed it for what it was. it did feel very much like a justice league movie, despite the very similar characters, it had a more mature tone, and even does the whole gods wanting to be human thing too. the characters feel very human, except for the superman guy. i think things would of worked better if eternals was a series instead of a movie, i would of liked these characters fleshed out more. the whole deviant antagonist was kinda wasted, it was interesting that it kept evolving, but then wonder woman just kills it in the very end and thats the end of that story. i would have loved to see that story fleshed out more. overall 7/10 for me.

So far Phase 4 is very much a Phase 1 Redux, in that everything so far is really just trying redefine the MCU as we've come to know it, which in-and-of-itself is not a bad thing, but I just wish that Marvel Studios would maybe swing for the fences a little more. Who know, maybe once Phase 4 is done, and Phase 5 starts, they'll be able to go even further with some of these interesting ideas, instead of falling back on formula too much.

I guess I’m one of the few people who loved this movie, and for the same reasons that made people hate it. I guess everyone wanted another marvel movie where you have more time with characters through other movies. However the underlying theme in the movie and that whole philosophical concept of good and evil is what makes it enough for me to enjoy it even without having spent that much time with the characters. In the other words, the theme is important enough that we don’t even need that much time to feel like we’re part of what’s happening; it’s like bonding over trauma, or bonding over an event that’s intense enough that doesn’t require a long time to do it’s job. Now, because I’ve personally constantly think about the themes portrayed in the movie yeah ofc I was able to quickly relate to the characters and their motivations. But I feel like most people are more concerned with more practical issues of existence, like how I’m gonna pay my bills or will I find a partner and that’s why the other Marvel movies are more liked by most people. To me, the movies wasn’t even about the eternals as characters, but it was about the nature of good and evil and what is fair or there really is justice or is it all just power? Most people don’t think about that so I understand they would not care about and feel like the movie was bad.

Honestly, this film did something different which makes sense. They could have repeated the same feel good formula of superheroes triumphing over the bad guy. The whole film is a thought experiment. Heroes and villains are insignificant in the grand cosmic scheme of things. Avengers only played into the celestials plan while thanos delayed the celestials plan to consume all intelligent life on earth.
It was a humanizing story of gods/machines; a conflict of values of sacrificing a planet to make a new galaxy to make more life while the opposing value is to save a planet reducing the potential of making more intelligent life on other planets. This movie is literally what thor and his family tried to be of being superior to all life.
The deviants were insignificant because the true "villains" were the celestials. Deviants only wanted vengeance which is worthless even with knowing the celestials plans, they still didn't care. There could have been a cheesy team up with the deviants and "avenger" team up combo attacks, but again that would be repetitive.
Eternals wasn't boring to me and what we thought would be the strongest eternals were the ones that were killed, broken and cowards. Not only that also betrayal of the weakest eternal to be really the most useful in the end.
This film cast dynamic had many twists and turns and felt like they were people and not cheesy heroes.

Im so glad you brought up the consequences of the Eternals' actions because not many people are talking about it. The movie described celestials as essential beings in the universe because they create not just new lives/civilization but also gravity, stars, planets, and etc. Without them, it seems like the universe cannot be held together and that's why their emergence is an essential part of the natural order of the universe. Wouldn't stoping the emergence have huge huge consequences? I mean how are they going to make up for it?
Ikarus says it's not a matter of good and evil and it's not "evil" and rather a matter of keeping the universe and its natural order together. New celestials are essential in creation of billions of new lives. Kingo agrees with Ikarus even after he found out about his "betrayal". But Sersi literally gives no logical rebuttal and rather hugs Ikarus and hold his hands. Phastos just shouts "how is billions dying a natural order". It seemed like the movie acknowledged the flaw and tried addressing it but those are not legit answers. Like you mentioned, if they said that wiping out lives is worse that preventing new lives to be born (although it doesn't address other issues about things like gravity), I would've understood. They should've either showed that Arishem had alternative dark motive and was unnecessarily trying to destroy earth, or showed how eternals can resolve the catastrophe that would result from a celestial that was supposed to be born not being born, or showed that 1 less celestial is not that game changing, or showed that there is a way to save earth AND let the celestial emerge.
Eternals seemed to be just emotionally driven with no plans or concerns about the consequences of their action. They seemed very irresponsible and I would NOT entrust them to solve problems on earth.

This is why Marvel films are referred to as theme park rides. Formulaic films (most common in marvel films but other action films such as the F&F, dumb comedies, and most horror movies), are there for an audience to be quickly entertained and to move on. When someone tells me a movie is boring, 9 times out of 10 it tells me a lot more about the audience than it does about the film itself.
Dont get me wrong, I enjoy dumb movies. Im just also capable of enjoying cinema as an art form and find that it tends to be most rewarding when it finds that blend of blockbuster & art. Thats how a lot of people see Christopher Nolan’s movies (hes a lot more blockbuster than art, but its at least the base level of what people who enjoy movies can go, “hey I enjoy movies as more than a roller coaster ride, I actually put some thought into what the movie was trying to say.”) Denny Villeneuve has mastered the blend of art & blockbuster with Dune and Blade Runner 2049. His previous films (Arrival, Sicario, and Prisoners) Already cemented him as one of the greatest directors of the modern film era.
Already I probably put more thought into this comment than yall put into watching “boring movies”. My point is, while im not very much into ceramics, I cant deny the amount of craft that was put into them. While its not for me, it is undeniably art. Dismissing something as “boring” is denying your own knowledge and appreciation toward a subject - if not the subject itself than what went behind it. If you find museums boring, is it the museums fault, or is it yours for not understanding the work that went behind each piece, the story or message behind it, the passion that together all make up some level of a masterpiece.

Great individual stuff that's worth checking out and makes it worthwhile overall, but there's something in how all of those pieces fit together that don't always work for me. I felt this movie had so much potential: so many interesting characters and ideas, but none of them really get deeply explored. I feel this movie suffers from the "too many characters problem", so no character gets the development they deserve. Like the "evil deviant" dude, it was so interesting when he came to life and became self-aware, but then they just killed him in the very next scene. Icarus could have had such an interesting character arc, but instead he just "became good" in the last moment for no reason then died. If the movie hadn't spent half its runtime "getting the band back together" these things could have had more substance.

I hear y’all with the complaints in the comments but tbh I don’t think it’s something Marvel or any studio can solve. It’s difficult to recreate the wheel. Just like comics. After so many comics it all becomes redundant and the same goes with films. I think the key is to not compare to other MCU films and take it for what it is. I’d give this movie a solid A-. I don’t see enough people talking about how this film feels so out of place because there isn’t a lot of overlap with the other MCU characters. Yes we get a few cameos at the end, but there’s no way a global event (like what happened with Tiamut) could take place and SHIELD not be involved. Or at least shown? Like…it’s confusing to me.
Also. How does this all work with the multiverse plot lines already developing? We’re getting entrenched in that already but now that almost pales in comparison to the arrival of the Celestials. Know what I mean?
So that’s where I’m a little confused. The movie should be a show on HBO and it should’ve been slated for 2023 or something - after we get more info on the space/time/multiverse stuff. Because there’s no way you could introduce the concepts in this film and then leave it out of all the others moving forward

Because the same author created both, Jack Kirby, and in a meta way both the eternals and the new gods kind of complement each other since Kirby somewhat continued one story in the other.

Its January 14, 2022. Eternals just came out on streaming. Glad I didn't risk getting Covid by watching this in a theater. It was ok but not worth dying over. Not even in my top 15 MCU films. I kind of , liked the quiet dramatic ethical debate parts and wanted to see more of it. This definitely would have been better as a 6 to 10 episode Disney + series. It needed that breathing room to give the million year long epic story the opportunity to show and not just tell. Can you imagine the Loki series or Wandavision cut down to a 2 and half hour movie? It would suck too.

Just watched it, and honestly really loved it. Definitely some weak aspects of the movie, especially some of Sprite’s acting, but really, all my problems with the movie are nitpicks. I thought Black Widow was just… fine. Probably my least favorite movie in the MCU. Shang Chi was a lot of fun and was good, but it still didn’t get me too hyped to see more. I was thinking that the MCU’s best days might be behind us. But then I saw Eternals and completely loved it. This was such a cool and different movie, and I honestly can’t wait to see more of these characters again, just like how I couldn’t wait to see more of the Guardians again after their first movie and I remember how blueballed we were for several years, waiting for them to interact with the rest of the Avengers in Infinity War. Eternals gives me this same feeling. I’m so stoked to see more of Sersi, Phastos, Thena, and the others and can’t wait to see them meet Shang Chi, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange. Eternals actually gave me hope for Phase 4 and the MCU going forward.

8:52 -- I will say... I agree here, where the film wants to get into new territory but something is holding it back. Honestly, that's the executives with their confining notes. My buddy directed dealt with this at WB where he was directing a major film there but it was SOOOOOOO many executives confining him, telling him what he could or couldn't do, telling him to reshoot entire scenes in new ways... that it's hard to know where a filmmaker's decisions are their own. I, personally, don't blame a filmmaker entirely when something is awful... nor, do I get them all of the credit when something is great.
