The Quadra 840AV still holds the title of the fastest 68040 Mac Apple ever released, and is one of my favourites. Join me as I take this dead Quadra 840AV and bring it back to life. I even did some "high quality" video editing on it!
I also check out the FWB SCSI JackHammer NuBus card, the Radius VideoVision card, BlueSCSI and ZuluSCSI.

I have an 840av sitting on the floor about 3' away from me. I also have an extra motherboard and a box full of spare parts for it under my desk. You are quite correct about the brittle plastic. Don't look at one too long or your stare will cause something to break. When I moved, I had my nephew cradle it in his arms yet the CD bezel still got damaged. Lucky I had all of those spare parts. Great machine though. What I don't have is an original keyboard, mouse or monitor.

Nice video on this restore. That was quite a bit of a workout trying to open that package. The expanding foam was a good idea and I may use this technique in future. Instead of placing the expanding foam directly onto the computer (with some plastic coating of course) maybe place the expanding foam between 2 boxes, then bubblewrap the computer and place it into the second box. Then add a lid for easy access to remove the computer. Just an idea...

G'day Bruce, sorry I gave you such a hard time with the unboxing! Seems that the internal layer of squashy foam still wasn't thick enough to absorb the "drop test", which also caused the NuBus card to pop out. Next time I'll fill the computer interior with foam as well . For those reading along it was indeed SikaBoom expanding foam. I'm really pleased to see the 840AV up and running again! Enjoy!
When I was using it as an edit station I used a RAID 0 config of 2 drives to get extra capture speed. And the longest render alert I saw was "About a month". No, I didn't wait for it to finish. I'm impressed that the software even had that as a displayable note.

    • @BranchusCreations

With the advances in retrobrighting in later years in the retro computing community it makes me wonder if more could be done to brittle plastics - do we have any chemists in our midst? 🧐

  • @kimpanattoni

This may seem like a rather odd question to ask someone on a Mac Restoration channel, but here we go:
I love old Macs and will ultimately begin collecting them again when circumstances allow it. The same goes for the other type of computer I wanted to ask you about. Are their channels that you trust that go into the restoration of old SGI computers such as the old Personal Iris, Indy, Indigo and Indigo 2, O2, Octane, etc? I personally like your educational style and teaching videos, and the way you teach works well to my odd way of learning (some disabilities there, not too relevant), and I hope to find someone who can do the same on an SGI restoration channel if one exists. Do you have any recommendations? Both old Macs and SGI computers are a part of my computing heritage and I want to give them the love they deserve when the time comes; especially the ones you find inexpensively (relative term) that say "parts only" on places like ebay.
    Thanks! :)

    • @BranchusCreations

I use a purpose-specific PCB cleaning solution diluted in distilled water. The product is made by Kleentek and is called Electro, but I believe it's only available here in Australia. I have also heard that Branson EC is good. Here's some more info about it from one of my other videos: czcams.com/video/RLgFSdSDE-8/video.html
