Migraine is not just a headache, it's a complex neurological disease that impacts more than 1 billion people worldwide. MEDICAL ANIMATION TRANSCRIPT: To sense the world, your nerves send electrical signals to and from your spinal cord and brain. Sensors throughout our body collect information about our surroundings. This information is sent by signals to our brain through a series of nerve cells. Each electrical signal is carried from one end of a nerve cell to the other using passageways called ion channels. Charged particles, called ions, pass through the channels along the nerve, which helps generate the electrical current. At the end of the nerve, the signal moves to the next via chemicals called neurotransmitters. Communication with the brain occurs via pathways and nerve centers at the base of the brain, called the brain stem. The brain stem helps control sleep, heart rate, and breathing. Migraine is a disease where one or more parts of this communication system does not function properly. Many sections of DNA, called genes, program ion channels, neurotransmitters, and other structures that support these nerve pathways. In some with migraine, inherited changes to genes, called mutations, can cause the communication system to become hypersensitive. Most mutations do not directly cause migraine, but, in combination, may explain why there are so many forms and symptoms of migraine disease. These mutated genes affect the function of other parts of the body. As a result, people with migraines may also have anxiety, depression, strokes, epilepsy, hypothyroidism, irritable bowel syndrome, pelvic floor pain, fibromyalgia, Sjogren’s disease, and others. Each attack typically has three or four phases. The typical phases of a migraine attack are prodrome, starting hours before a headache, aura, headache, and postdrome. Prodrome includes subtle symptoms, such as yawning, fatigue, or moodiness. Experienced only by some, auras may be short term visual changes, such as flashes of light, zigzags, or blind spots. Auras can also include numbness, confusion, vertigo, or even muscle weakness. Pounding headaches may occur on only one side of the head, often lasting four to seventy-two hours. Other possible symptoms include light and noise sensitivity, or nausea. Finally, during postdrome, a person feels like they have hangover, which lasts another day or two. Migraine attacks are often brought on by specific stimuli, or triggers, such as: increased stress, weather change, too much or too little sleep, or certain foods. Since it may be a cumulative effect of several triggers, avoiding as many known triggers as possible can help reduce the number of attacks. It is important for treatment planning to distinguish migraine on the basis of frequency and character of attacks. Less than fifteen headache days per month is episodic migraine. Fifteen or more headaches per month is chronic migraine. Every year about three percent of those with episodic migraine become chronic. This worsening of symptoms may be due to changes in hormones or accumulated brain damage from years of migraine attacks. While migraine is rarely deadly, it is an invisible disease that can steal years of quality time. For more information about migraine, talk to your healthcare provider, or visit migrainedisorders.org.

My migraines easily get triggered if I sleep too much or too little, if I drink and eat unhealthy foods, if im helping in household chores, everytime i have my period, but most of the time I dont know why it attacks. I suffered for almost 5 yrs and I tried everything to treat my migraines even they said there's no cure. I didn't lose hope, so I change my lifestyle, exercise and healthy diet. The last time I have my migraines was 9 yrs ago and still I keep on praying it wont come back.

I have had migraines for 37 years, and just now recovering from a 3-day migraine during which I vomited for 2 days, and had disturbing patchy blindness for the duration. I coldn't eat for 62 hours. The pain is so severe that at one point I truly thought death would be an acceptable alternative. However I've just got back from a day with a neurological specialist, had many tests, the neurologist confirmed it was not a tumour nor a stroke. Unfortunately there is no known cause nor cure, I did get advice on very carefully managing a sleep/wake routine and not deviating from it, not to disrupt the hormone cycle. Eg: bed by 10 to 10.30pm, 7-8 hours sleep and up at the same time each day. Heaven only knows how mothers of very young children would manage. Plenty of water, fresh air and exercise (a daily walk will do). Apparently regular routine is important. Also women's fluctuating hormones will affect migraine.

Sometimes I get them so bad, I think my head will explode or that the blood is gonna gush out of my ears. Other times I have empty spaces from the headache period because my brain has shut down and I don't remember things that have happened. I am SO HAPPY that you help people to stop conflating migraine with headache. This misinformation infects the entire medical world. Even the American Migraine Foundation does this throughout their material. This leads to improper treatment approaches, with most 'migraine medication' actually being pain medication. It also leads to misunderstandings and stigma towards migraine sufferers on the part of non-migraineurs.

I feel like the things I want to do during the day can’t be done and even when I do do them it’s not a struggle more of like I just want to go home feeling and rest. When it first started it felt like I was off-balance at all times and sometimes slight movements would make it worse. I had trouble sleeping at night and even now I still do but at least I can manage to get some form of sleep. I’m not sure if some of you guys get the feeling of unsteadiness at times because that’s what I get and some ways I help manage it is by drinking water, laying down on a pillow and just going outside. I hope I’m not the only one out there that’s like this but even then I hope you do get better.

I have had migraines for 37 years, and just now recovering from a 3-day migraine during which I vomited for 2 days, and had disturbing patchy blindness for the duration. I couldn't eat for 62 hours. The pain is so severe that at one point I truly thought death would be an acceptable alternative. However I've just got back from a day with a neurological specialist, had many tests including MRI and ultrasound, the neurologist confirmed it was not a tumour nor a stroke.

Mine began after my ex knocked me out cold one night. I awoke the following afternoon with zigzag lines on the floor. Saw my MD about the zigzags who told me I was having a migraine and asked if they were in my family. (genetic). I told him, no, There was no pain just auras that would come and go without pain. We separated at that time & still no headaches.
It was when we got back together again that the real migraine with the pain started. Look for your triggers the MD told me ie red wine, chocolate, etc. I must admit they didn't trigger a migraine but did make them worse.
As soon as we divorced all migraines ended. Turns out your trigger can be a person. Haven't had a migraine since. Moral of story - if you cannot figure your triggers out - it could be another person!!!

I had migraines in my teens, with a zigzag aura, later they disappeared. They came back when I turned 30. A little trick I learned is when the aura starts to take 2x400mg ibuprofen my weight 90kg (here in Europe ibumetin). It really helps isolate the pain. The main thing is to take it right when the first signs appear, later it is too late. I don't know how much it affects health, but I met one person who does the same. I'm not recommending anything, I'm just telling you what I do.

After menopause I started getting severe migraines, so I thought I would share some things that have helped. Doctor prescribed Naratriptan - if I take this when I feel the tension rising through the back of my neck it can stave it off the headache but it won't help if I have started being sick. In an emergency the doctor has given me a relaxing anti sick which allows me to take the Naratriptan. During the headache, I find breathing in steam (head over bowl and towel over head) and clearing sinuses helps, also CZcams Yoga with Adrienne has a good migraine video which also helps. My migraines have reduced from around 2 per month to 1 about every 6 weeks. I heard an expert recommend magnesium supplement and topical progesterone so going to try that too.
