instead of worrying if other people approve of you, try to understand others better. calculatively showing the right vulnerability with the right people at the right time can actually get you further than trying SO HARD to appear competent all the time to everybody.

The main reasons why people care what their co-workers think of them is because they got familiar with them. Remember people you are only there to get your money, not make friends.

I wouldn't have cared too much about how my former co-workers saw me. They were problematic since I started working amongst them and they didn't really accept me as one of their own as I was considered an outsider, despite living a 20 minute walk away from work. I got treated better by the customers, which made my work days a lot easier and was able to earn several recognitions for my outstanding customer service. I'm pretty sure a lot of my co-workers were jealous. I literally rised above all the hate from my toxic co-workers.

    • @AskNieRe
      @AskNieRe Před 3 lety +2

"former co-workers", you ended up leaving that job?
Your story is a bit similar to mine: I have a good rapport with my clients but with management and a couple of coworkers there's this weird vibe towards me. Like you, I feel like an outsider at this place. I am the type of person to keep to myself anyway, do my work and talk later. I'm not the type to really gossip at work or talk about personal topics...so they definitely hate that I don't make effort to fit in. I am independent and want to be respected as such. The environment I am in is unorganized and chaotic..with a break down of communication. They want teamwork but they haven't exactly shown me good teamwork skills.

In my experience with humans; this all and always comes back to the core issue of one’s perception of own’s own sense of self-worth. If you understand your innate worth simply as a human being, what other people think of you one way or the other will be completely moot. This isn’t even a matter of “caring what other people will think of you”. That will not even enter the equation. I never think about what people think of me as none of that matters.
However, what I think of the person I choose to be (keywords: my choice) is all that matters. And if you choose to be an honorable, kind, helpful/uplifting, compassionate and empathic person, that’s all one needs to know. You are thee only person qualified to make that call for yourself. No one else is remotely qualified to make a call on your “worth”. That’s your job as a human being. You make the harmonious choices, the rest will fall into place.
Also, play acting at being positive will bite you in the ass with other humans. There is a thing called “toxic positivity” that puts other humans off once they sense (and they will) that you are putting on a show. And they will resent you for it.
It’s never what you do that ultimately matters, but rather the intention BEHIND the action. You can’t fake intention.
As such, get your intentions in order first and foremost.
Also, esp. with work; Always be of a service-minded intention. And also, be fucking really good at what you do. If you are not inspired to be really fucking good at what you do, then you’re in the wrong line of work, and thus; find the thing that naturally inspires you to be really fucking good at what you do and then stay humble about it and be of good service with your skills and everything will just fall into place.
Trust me, I got hired straight into top-tier level positions in Hollywood doing VFX employing all this same exact principles.
Why? Because I’m not afraid of being awesome and I’m not afraid of being humble in the process of being awesome. Rare quality in Hollywood especially.
Read “The Four Agreements” to get you started.

we work from home and communicate with each other through teams chat. aside from the biweekly virtual meeting and going into the office once a week, we don't really see each other. it's easier to talk behind peoples' backs, give them attitude, or think negatively of someone if they're not in the presence of said person. the biggest issue i have is people thinking i'm dumb, when i'm not, and making backhanded remarks. when i directly address those remarks, i get painted as aggressive. so, it's either i let people communicate with me in a disrespectful tone or i respond and get labeled.
so this isn't really me caring what other people think but somewhat is because these people have sway in my work evaluations.

Sometimes it matters because in some countries bosses collect information from other employees about you and if you are working in a toxic environment that everyone is gossiping, then one wrong opinion can destroy your career in that company.

First you mention to not care what others think, then you say to monitor what impressions we give off to others?!?! Isn’t that caring?? Also, truth be told some people will never like you, no matter how positive or nice you are. Some people are hell bent on being miserable

I don’t think I give ENOUGH of a shit of what my co workers think of me...but I should? Lol
i could honestly care less and it doesn’t bother me bc I have nothing to prove to them. but I think it bothers them that I’m not bothered?
I’m very ambitious and focused and driven. I guess I could seem unfriendly since I keep to myself and do my own thing but still work as a team. I just choose not to talk about personal life, lesson learned from my previous job, your workers are not really your friends.
I think once you reach adult maturity, which is around 28-30, you start to not give a shit about pleasing people or what they think of you. Im confident in what I do bc I have a lot of passion for my career. I’m just at that point in my life where, your opinion is the least of my problems nor does it phase me.
Idk if my way of thinking is a good thing or I should reconsider changing my ways?
