The Beatles - Penny Lane

- The Beatles performing “Penny Lane.”
Two days after recording some overdubs for 'A Day In The Life', The Beatles spent the afternoon in East London at Angel Lane, Stratford, filming scenes for the video of 'Penny Lane' with Scandinavian director, Peter Goldmann.
Shortly after the East London shoot, Goldmann and The Beatles headed to Knole Park, the grounds of a stately home in Kent, to film scenes of the band horse-riding in the countryside. Around this time, Goldmann and his crew (but minus The Beatles) travelled to Liverpool to shoot the sequences near to Penny Lane.
A few days before filming started for 'Penny Lane', Goldmann shot a promo for 'Strawberry Fields Forever'. Both shoots presented a challenge for everyone involved owing to the Musicians' Union ban on any action that could be construed as miming. Despite these limitations, both the films Goldmann made were so innovative that neither would have looked out of place on MTV a decade and a half later.

I think so always. Elo also comes close on out of the blue
Brings tears to my eyes. Not about individuals but about the whole phenom that a pop band singing love songs and light social commentary captured the hearts of the planet for a while.
Me too ❤
It brings tears to my eyes as well. Even having no connection to a mundane lane in a mundane UK town Paul made it seem magical. The Beatles had that magic. Strawberry Fields, Elenore Rigby as well heck the list is endless. They may have been a pop band as far as a label but they were so much more. Modern day poets might better fit.
It just brings tears to my eyes. Out of the beauty, the unbelievable beauty of this song.

I don't like to ''diss'' other popular musicians but the Beatles insinuated themselves into my heart like no others. There was an aura about them that nobody else matched.
I'm a huge music freak. I love Joni and Neil and Bob and Warren and new bands like the Baar Brothers and Sea Girls but for me there is still the Beatles and then there's everybody else.

They were already the most famous/ popular band in the world by the mid 60s, based upon their early success with their boy band rock n roll output. It seems too coincidental that they would then become the best band ever too. They had a high profile so were more influential than others for this reason when they started experimenting I reckon. Doesn't make them the best.
Hmm, you don't say?
@@pauls7803 When other great musicians gush over them I think nothing more needs to be said. In the words of Noel Gallagher from Oasis " They were the best and still are" And that was/is because of their unparalleled melodic genius and their experimentation in songs like " Tomorrow Never knows" for example.
" Lennon and McCartney are the greatest composers of the 20th century"----Leonard Bernstein classical music composer and conductor.
Can you imagine having the talent to write a song that good? The lyrics, the harmonies, the melody, the brass solo instrument breaks? And then doing it all over again tomorrow to create something new? I guess that's why they are the Beatles and we aren't. Not too shabby, boys.

Beatles music always got better the more you listened to it. I think it was because they were braking new ground with every Album. After Rubber soul and Revolver, I remember listining to Pepper. I didn't like it at first. but the more I heard it I couldn't stop playing it. The things they did with a 4 track tape player or whatever they used 60 years ago led the way for the rest to follow.

Yaaassssssss 🪳beeattleeessss 🪲🎶🎼🎵
I found the movie with that premise disappointing but somewhat interesting simply due to the Beatles being in my life for 40+ years now -thanks Mum & Dad.
Right on Dan. #1 band in the world. Rock on
@@toddclayton4125 …🙂👍🏾
Watch the film "Yesterday"
Imagine walking down the street minding you’re own business and suddenly u see the Beatles in their prime. Insane
Would be a wonderful moment
And on horseback
It’s hard to comprehend the genius of writing a masterpiece like this.
they make the most regular place in Liverpool sound 100 times more interesting
The horses help the situation
it isn’t all that great tbh but I’m still glad that I’m from Liverpool😂😂😂
Ebony M am from Liverpool and am very proud of are great city don’t matter were anyone is from these days there’s a war going on all over England
I'm from Liverpool too! I live near penny lane and for some reason im excited for when i go there next haha
I went there a few days ago. It was my first time in Liverpool and I walked for more than an hour just to get to Penny Lane... it is just a normal street but just the fact that The Beatles made a song about it is so great! I don't regret anything of that long walk to see Penny Lane, and I would do it again if I go back to Liverpool ;)
When my daughter was 5 years old, she became a fan of the Beatles when she first listened to Hey Jude. She is now 7 years old and still listens to their songs every day. Penny Lane is her favorite.
I also fell in love with them as a child. My grandfather had two cds in his glove compartment in his car. I have memories from as young as 4 years old of begging to play the cds. I'm about to turn 20, and am still absolutely in love with the music of the Beatles. I don't think that will ever change
Very lucky, I heard Penny Lane when I was 21 years old.
My daughters name is Penny Lane.
@@TheG4heath And damn your name is George?
I'm proud of your daughter !
I love the fact that it's only "very strange" whenever the banker is mentioned 🤣

The Beatles grew up so quick! They experienced more in their short career as Beatles than we will in our entire lifetime
It took all these years for that “portrait of the Queen” line to no longer be applicable
It’s weird for 55 years up until the queens death you could listen to the song hear the line and instantly think “ah he’s talking about the same British monarch that’s around today” now after 55 years that connection has been broken
That's the first thing I thought of when she died
Pretty girls are now selling portraits of KCIII
I disagree 100% The song is not a current event piece, it's our history of Beatles tunes, applicable in the day, still applies now. Even today, why can't you carry a portrait of the Queen???
@@nakedvader I thought he referred to pound notes, with a portrait of QEII?
Scientists: We need a cure for depression.
The Beatles: Sounds like a job for us
Here Comes The Sun is the ultimate anti depressant
Carl Neoh you are totally right
oy brian may
When I was sad about something as a kid my mom would put on some Beatles and I would forget what I was sad about.
@@carlneoh5843 Yes and In My Life is another one.
I would estimate I’ve listened to this song no less than 2000 times. I look forward to the next 2000. As uplifting a song as there is.
1:36 I love the movement that Ringo makes with his head, he looks like that person who goes to a party and tries to fit in 😂😂
2:10 Love how Ringo just barely gets off his horse, and that they decided to keep that take.
It does seem like this was just cobbled together with the bare minimum of useable footage. Paul doesn't even get his strap over his shoulder as the table flips. ... also, Waaaagh
I think the Beatles videos were always half-assed, just watch the ones for Help and Ticket to Ride
@@thedozer820 It was the 60's. Music videos as we know them today didn't really exist back then.
@@thedozer820 they didn’t need flashy music videos, considering the fact that one of the reasons why they quit playing live is because no one was actually listening to their music, just full on screaming. besides, half-assing it is what makes it funny imo lol
He was struggling to get off the horse and George almost fell off getting off the horse 😂🤣
Quite possibly the most uplifting chorus in the entire history of popular music
Christian has to
be up there !
You are overreacting
Here comes the sun: what am I to you!
lol
Strawberry Swing - Coldplay
Hello Goodbye.
Buttercup.
I got to visit Liverpool this year and explore Penny Lane with a Liverpoolian who knew all the deep lore. Took us to see Strawberry Fields and all of their childhood homes. Watching this and actually knowing the place now is surreality in layers.
They wrote all those great songs at a time when rock n roll didnt have a long history. They wrote the rules for future music and then broke those rules and made new ones. All in under 8 years of recoding professionally. The world will never see that level of genius in our lifetime.
Very well said.
@@RalphCramden-tm2gi Thank you.
Fun fact: it takes 3 hours and 47 minutes to drive between Abbey Road and Penny Lane.
So that's like 2 White Albums and 1 Revolver to get there.
@@zackzallie8735.
Yes, but you'd also have to give a baby permission to drive your car.
That's pretty cool
@@TotoDG I like how you know this I bet your favourite beetles song is back in the USSR because you’re name is soviet onion
Interesting...
I’m 12 and my dad and grandma loves the beatles
I never realised how many song they wrote that I hear. They got me introduced to them because at Christmas we saw the Beatles get back and now every night I listen to as many song by them as I can before I go to sleep.
Welcome! There is a direct quote from the movie superbad that is very relevant here: "Have you ever looked at how blue his eyes are? Every time I look at them it's like the first time I heard the Beatles." These 4 lil lads from the liverpool area changed the world - no other band has ever come close lol
keep listening, rock on.
Bonnie
I started listening to The Beatles at your age too !
Do you have a fav song yet ?
keep listening, hope you enjoy more songs!
I was your age when I learned about the Beatles, and I'm 54 now, still love them
