There were two performances after Earl left that are seen as responses - this one, of course - and The Bones. The Bones is also remarkable and emotionally moving.
I'm someone who always loved stage and move musicals, due in no small part that from age 5 onward, my parents made a point of listening to original cast and soundtrack recordings and explaining what was going on in the story/scene as we listened (this was pre-video tapes and premium cable channels that would allow you to go back and see older musicals). So, I always assumed there was a natural connection between singing/telling a story/playing a part in character, etc. It's hard for me to understand how people who can otherwise be 'emotionally moved' through music find that the whole concept of someone 'breaking into song and/or dance' during a musical is laughable. But I understand it's not everybody's 'cup of tea'. But I always stress that with VoicePlay, the use of costumes, sets and makeup is a choice they use because they feel for certain songs that it is the best way to perform the song, it is NOT using a gimmick to cover up a subpar vocal performance. Someone within the VoicePlay 'family' (this was in a patreon webchat, so I'm being a bit vague in order to not give away all the details) recently commented that this is one video that they simply cannot watch or listen to because it brings back such sad memories.

This one really breaks my heart every time I hear it. I really feel as though Earl's place in the group still has not been filled to this day because... in so very many ways, Earl was irreplaceable. Now, when JNone's time in the Navy is done, if he returned to the group full time, and it were to be Geoff, Eli, Layne, Cesar, and JNone, I'd be very pleased with that lineup... but I really don't know that they'll ever really have another Earl. And... part of this one, it feels like, was them having to reassure _themselves_ that the heart of life... the heart of the group was still good. Not just the audience.
So it is actually five part harmony. Eli sang his part and the part Earl would have sung, but only did the video for his own part, making it more poignant because we can "hear" Earl but not see him.
I don't know whether this is something they did intentionally, but the last few notes sound incomplete to me, like they're leading up to a final high note that never comes. A musical missing-man formation.
This was a hard one for them. Broke their hearts when Earl left. Geoff, Layne, and Earl had been singing together since they were 12 or 13 years old.

I've just been watching Once Upon A Dream with Earl and Tony. I highly recommend it! It's ery short but WOW! 😅
