This was the group's first video after Earl abruptly lefy them. It was very emotional for them to film and the reason the background is so stripped down and the lighting is so simple. They were heartbroken , and they knew their fans would be, too.
I guess you could say they were in repair, too.
The emotion in Geoffs eyes especially broke me.
Earl was one of the founding members of the group, and Geoff, Layne and Earl started singing together in 1997, right out of high school. Earl left in 2020, so 23 years. A lot of marriages don't last that long. When Earl left they released this the day after the announcement, and three weeks later, The Bones. This one was the heartbreak, The Bones is rebuilding. They hadn't released anything since 4/25 before that, and their usual is about a month. So.. well, make your own conclusion. They did 2 when J None left too, (You're My Best Friend and Man in the Mirror) but while it was sad having him leave, he left to fulfill his goals and he sang in those performances, so the sadness is different.
This song, as somone else has said, was a response to Earl leaving the group. He had been one of the founder members since middle school, so it was a big thing. They also made The Bones, to say that they would be ok. VoicePlay often do this sort of thing. When Earl had a health scare they did Queen in 5 Minutes. When J.None left the group they made "We're Good". During the Covid lockdown they made "I Will Survive", flimed and recorded seperately and put together in edit. They leave their fans in no doubt about how things are going. Another reason to love them.
Man in the Mirror was also kind of J None explaining why he was going.

I know I have walked through the valley of the shadow of death and it sounds like you have too. Remember, what doesn't kill me makes me stronger and that goes for you too. I lost my husband, the love of my life, of 48 years to stage 4 colon cancer that he survived for nearly 10 years. I asked him if I could go with him and he said no that I still had things to do here. He'd find all the good places and show them to me when it was my turn. I love that you aren't afraid to show your heart - that makes you very special. Chin up, my man. I'll do the same.
Nooooo baby. Wish I could have protected you from ever feeling like that. But you know you have and will continued to be prayed over, for and thru. So happy to see you here and sharing your joy with others. 😘 Love.

This one has always been very personal to me. It came at a time when I needed a good cry, and I still to this day tear up every time I hear it.
