  • @HarleyPebley
    @HarleyPebley Před 7 lety +15

    Definition: zombie: A living being stripped of it’s will, humanity, and normal behavior by outside forces either supernatural and mundane.
    This definition has three elements to it: 1) dead people, 2) these people walk around doing things and 3) they are controlled by an external supernatural force.
    Ephesians 2 says: And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience.
    This passage also includes the same three elements as the definition above.
    1) Anyone living in their sins, anyone not following Jesus, anyone disobedient to God, is dead.
    2) They are walking around following their lusts.
    3) They are controlled by a spiritual force in rebellion to God.
    Therefore, everyone not made alive by the Spirit is a zombie.

    For me Zombie apocalypse is unlikely to happen as a fan of science of biology. If zombies are living dead, they're impossible to be fast or somewhat running, in some movies some rotting zombies are still moving at walking , if a body is in a decomposition state, muscles and tendons are already broken down and limbs maybe falling or being detached, maybe the eyeballs as well.

Kinda like the hives in I am Legend, CWD found in deer comes to mind, so do a few different parasites and fungi that zombify animals/insects. But as you mentioned I don't think they would be fast and probably wouldn't be nearly as dangerous as movies make them out to be.

    It's real fun to get mail....I want so much to be mad right now because I don't agree with everything said, but then you give me that goofy conclusion and now Im laughing and I still want to be mad and...well shoot. Your too funny. Shaved head? Im laughing. Ok....you got me. Now can I attack like a good fundamentalist?
    It's admirable that you are trying to change the discussion about the gospel on the internet. It can be incredibly horrific because I think we have arrived at a point in time where we prefer to win an argument rather than understand our role as the Second Adam. Your topic here is well timed. We have been discussing this passage of late. I know (well...I think I know anyway) that you are attempting to make reading the Bible enjoyable and to educate people about the history that we never learn on "Any Given Sunday" (See what I did there?)
    My question is if you are in Acts 21 and it speaks of a Nazarite Vow, why do you choose to marry it to a religious jewish fundamentalism? Are you? Maybe Im not hearing correctly. Why not teach about what it is? Why not call it what it is instead of calling it some religious behavior that super religious people will approve of. At the end when you speak of Paul going to Jerusalem you allude to the fact that he went because of his strong convictions, but you don't delineate what those convictions are, leaving it to the viewer to assume that he just believed in Jesus so strongly that he knew he had to go and preach the gospel to the lost Jews. Fact is, he was very much still Jewish himself (despite popular theological discourse to the contary) and he was still sensitive to the call to go to Jerusalem for the three festivals mentioned in Deuteronomy 16:16. You still call Paul's movement "Christianity", yet at that time the "church" or ecclesia was meeting in homes AND had of yet not been cut off from the community life of the synagogue. The romans called them Christians, but they called themselves the Way. Of even greater importance is that on numerous occasions he makes mention of his love for his brethren, his actual family, (Romans 9:1-2 being chief in my mind) the Jews. Was he really as anti-judiasm as we have been made to believe? Or was he really anti-unbelief and anti-rebellion. If he found a Jew, was that Jew his automatic enemy because he was Jewish? Or was a PERSON, whether Jewish of Gentile, given the table of fellowship until such a time as unbelief made it impossible to continue? Seems he had just as much trouble with the some of the Asia minor communities for the same reasons.
    The Nazarite vow you spoke of, albeit right on in terms of choosing something that would communicate to those who were ready to kill him for apparently teaching against the Law of Moses, was not a hated experience for Paul. It was within the confines of Jewish law and Biblical experience. It was not a burden or a form of legalism. It was no different than someone choosing to do a fast today or go on a retreat to dedicate themselves to prayer and separation. In this case, for the sake of his brothers, and as you said, by the sage advice of James, who I personally think wanted to see Paul have his moment to speak to the leaders of the Jewish community, the Nazarite vow was chosen because it would reveal a level of dedication to the Torah and to the traditions that would effectively quite the community so they could hear him. James and Paul were on the same page. I thought you expertly connected that to Acts 15 because they are absolutely connected. The reason for the 5 standards of righteousness was not to create the least amount of law that the Gentiles would have to live. It was so the Jews would not instantly be offended by the unholy Gentile who was so "dirty" by all of his unholy habits. A Gentile, and even a Jewish believer, who is willing to "become all things to all people" has a greater likelihood of being invited to the table by the Jewish community, which for Paul, see Romans 9-11, should be the entire goal of the Gentile.
    I am only speaking to encourage a more...robust sensitivity on your part. I think you are very thoughtful about what you produce and authentic for sure (will never forget the grandpa episode). Just want to see you succeed and to me that means I should be overly long-winded here and hopefully it will impress you enough (I just can't see myself sending you a shirt, sorry man) that you would consider continuing the humor but also be more realistic (hope Im using the right word there) about the nature of being Jewish and also believing in Jesus in the 30 to 40 years after the resurrection. Matt, I grew up in the fundamentalist denominations; Brethren, Mennonite, Early Pentacostalism, Evangelical Free. Believe me, I have seen legalism. But the last 21 years I have been very close friends with a New York Orhodox Jewish man who believes in Jesus. He is not traditional but loves the presence of God and Grace. I have discovered that everything I was taught in the denominations about how Jews think and live is basically false and produced by the worst kind of assumptions about, irony of all ironies, Jewish legalism. I hope you can understand my case here. It's not from a intellectual arrogance that I speak, it is from the personal experience of watching a Jewish teacher make every attempt to have fellowship with his brothers and sisters in Christ, only to be turned away out of fear of being made to be Jewish just by sitting next to a Jew who still loves Torah and talks about Sabbath and Passover instead of the Lord's day and Easter.
    Ok. Im done. Sorry to hog the comments. Let your faith be honed by the patience of Grace. Be quickened. Fight the Good Fight of faith. Be sober. Be vigilant. Work out your sanctification/salvation in fear and trembling. Shalom!

      I appreciate the thoughts and the lighthearted tone amigo. I have a short window to bang out a reply, so I apologize in advance for being a bit brief.
      The reason I didn't call this a Nazarite vow is because the text doesn't. It has things in common with that vow, but many similar practices had evolved by the time of Jesus. That said, I don't think it changes anything whether this was a sort of Nazarite vow or something else, because Paul knew exactly what he was doing strategically. Paul was crystal clear on the old covenant and the new, harbored no confusion about being still in transition from Judaism to Christianity, and had already written extensively to correct others who were confused about that stuff. I marry it to an unnecessary religious fundamentalism, because at that time it was unnecessary religious fundamentalism (according to scripture Paul had already written). In the same way that I might wear a suit and tie to a very conservative church service, and even sing a song there that doesn't make much sense theologically, so Paul elected to participate in something extraneous as a gesture to those who were criticizing him. In your comment you liken voluntary spiritual disciplines to what Paul was doing here, but those disciplines are private and not an accommodation of others, but Paul's was public and precisely described as an accommodation in 21:24. I use the term fundamentalism because the people who weren't satisfied with his gesture literally tried to punch him to death in front of the temple.
      The point here isn't that Paul did something wrong or right in doing the vow thing. He made a move he thought would help, but it didn't because of the lack character of the mob who tried to murder him. The point then is that at this point in the story of the early church, there was no amount of accommodation that would satisfy the fury of the enemies of the Gospel.
      The awful behavior of people who tried to kill someone for thinking the wrong thing even after he tried to offer a gesture of ceremonial peace is no reflection on any Jewish person today or in the interim. It's only a reflection on the people who actually acted that way, and those are the only people Luke has in view, and those are the only people I have in view as well. These days the gospel makes us appropriately blind to those old divisions (no Jew nor Gentile Galatians 3:28).
      Last point of response: The Evangelical Free Church is decidedly not a fundamentalist group.
      I sure appreciate the thoughts and ideas, and you having a sense of humor the whole way.

      The Ten Minute Bible Hour Great response. If it's any indication, I took your meaning as it not being right or won't for Paul to do, but an attempt at "being all things to all in order that I might win some". I rather found it refreshing you teaching it that way, since most of the time I've heard this chapter taught in Black and White terms as whether Paul was right or won't to do this, similar to sermons about his Mars Hill speech somehow being too much of an accommodation to that audience, as if you need to have the exact magic formula script to preach the gospel the same way every time or it won't work right... Thanks for recognizing Paul's efforts to individualize the message of the gospel to his particular audiences and make it understandable to a modern person.

    I know this video is a year old, but seriously dude; Paul is not undertaking some Talmudic tradition in order to deceive anyone - it's a Nazarite vow. Read Numbers Chapter 6.

    First, our disagreement with the twin question from no dumb questions, and now you say that zombies are scarier than dolls with knives? Hey, if I saw a bunch of zombies coming, I'd be like "Hmm, I'll take care of that right after lunch." But a doll with a knife? How do you stop something that shouldn't be moving in the first place!? I don't think I can watch you anymore. Where just too different. LOL Kidding!!!!!! :)
    More on topic, why did Paul feel the need to go to Jerusalem? Was it to prove something? Was it to try to persuade the jews their? I'm so confused!
    I still find it fascinating how nothing has changed. These people don't want to hear it. They see somone who they want to beat to death simply because they don't agree.
    Matt, I had an idea for when you put up the verses on screen. What if you underlaid it with a stock image of old paper or maybe an open book. Maybe an open book on your desk. It would tie in with your theme a lot better. I think it would look a bit better.
    And maybe separate the lines of text a little more. My eyes started to hurt. :) Although, I guess I could just remember to read the verses before I play the video, like I usually do. :)

      I like your idea for making the text look more fancy. I've thought of adding some elements like that, but I plan on finishing out the Acts series with the more austere approach I've used throughout. I might change it up with whatever's next though.
      I think Paul was going to Jerusalem, because he was still genuinely hoping to bridge this gap between Jesus and Judaism.
      Finally, I feel like I could kick a doll with a knife very far, but I don't feel like I could kick my zombie problems away.

    • @610garage
      @610garage Před 7 lety +1

      That makes sense. Even though Paul knew it was most likely fatal, he may have felt that he had to atleast try.
      Hmmmm, you bring a good point. I did not think of the kicking abilities of dolls vs zombies. This might be a good topic for no dumb questions. What are you afraid of and why. I fear things that I don't understand or can controll. Inanimate objects coming to life, unknown creatures, weeping angels. I don't know how to stop them, so they all freak me out. Zombies on the other hand, well, there pretty much have the same limitations as humans. I understand that and so there not really scary to me.
