  • So many people want to knife Paul to death, but in Acts 25 he makes a bold play to avoid probably knifing.

    Hi Matt.
You're presentation of the Word is super entertaining. Way to put out the hook!
You really help draw me into the story.
    Thanks.
I always thought how God used Paul was a fascinating deal. Father God led him lower and lower and deeper and deeper into the evil empire in order to bring the Kingdom of God farther and farther. Rome had good reason to be scared of the Body of Christ.

    Hey Matt,
I'm a physics and math major who also happens to be an atheist. I grew up in a staunchly reformed southern baptist church in Louisville, KY and studied under the likes of Tom Schreiner, Albert Mohler and Bruce Ware. I know the bible well and I still believe it to be errant. I just want to say how much I respect you and Destin despite my religious differences. You are two men who I would like to model my future parenting on. You are both very wise and I absolutely love the Podcast, SmarterEveryDay and of course...that one...10hourminutebible? No...that's not right...huh...Well, whatever the little channel is called, I like that one too. Keep up the good work and dream of filling Football stadiums.(And large women) #12kTodayTheWorldTomorrow

I liked the sounds effect when the "Acts 25" thingy popped up. :)
I grew up in a christian household. And I think most people have atleast heard of christianity. So, I don't thins anybody really thinks about it much. But when you explained how Festus would have perceived it, it made me stop and think. Dang, this story is a bit bat guano crazy. :) It makes you think. Either the people who wrote it had a special kind of mushroom, or there's truth behind it. It's a story that is so crazy, it a bit hard to believe that somone would have made it up.

I particularly enjoyed this and the last video, respectively for the kind of questions that this one raises and that you uncover, and for how you mentioned the courtroom documents as sources for the last chapter. Thanks for this great work, I can't believe it's coming to an end!! I'm going to go back and catch up with all the previous episodes asap!

I find I have moved from the first question, "does this story have any merit?"... to the second question, "what do I do with this?"
I have given up trying to convince myself that the story is true. I am not sure I will ever be content on that issue.
Much more important to me is what I should do if it's true.
I have been thinking about and watching the Pope lately. He seems like the best example of a world leader right now... And, I read something last week that I really liked. Micah Fink's father advised, "Find out what the world is doing and do the opposite." I feel like Pope Francis is doing just that. I feel like I should be too.
Maybe that can be part of the discussion here or one of the post-Acts videos. What should we be doing?
(I am not sure I have my purpose figured out, but I am trying to leave the world better than I found it. Maybe I need to re-watch City Slickers and try to find that "one thing"... czcams.com/video/2k1uOqRb0HU/video.html).

John Caplis That's tough stuff to figure out. I'm just glad you're trying to work it out, most people (even "Christians") don't do that because it's too uncomfortable.

I think it's cute the way the Holy Spirit graciously turns around Paul's mistake of ignoring divine advice by going back to Jerusalem, to redirect him 'to bear witness at Rome'. Who's in ultimate control? the jews? Rome? Paul? No -The Holy Spirit.

Nice video Matt! I had never considered that the questions being asked of Paul should be questions we should be asking as we read.

It's almost always the NIV, although I bounce between a couple of different editions of the NIV for literally no reason whatsoever.

have you ever picked a photo to insert in a video for comic effect and just belly laughed every time you see it?

    • @MattWhitmanTMBH
      @MattWhitmanTMBH  Před 7 lety +2

Yes. The Commander Data photo this time around has that effect. I had a picture of a kid with her hands covered in ranch dressing when I said "ranch hands". That also broke me.

How did a picture of Festus from Gunsmoke not make it into this video? I pictured him and his old hat every time Festus was mentioned in the video.

So there is this woman, a mysterious one. Her face was never seen, yet her name was often written, sometimes obvious, sometimes not so much.
Then there is this man who makes videos about the bible on CZcams. His name is known, his face aswell. He wears a ring, states to be married, shows his kids in his videos, but his wife is never seen.
Sherlock would assume, that the faceless woman, who's name is written all over the man's CZcams channel, is the man's wife. But one thing blocks this thought. Their last names don't match.
In other words: Who is Tina Clifford? Is she your wife, sister, mom, bandmate, neighbour, favourite police officer? I am wondering about that for some time now.

Tina and her husband Charlie are friends with my wife and I and we go to church together (my wife's name is Camilla). Tina's great at editing and is also the editor of No Dumb Questions.

So Paul is not planning to have his life and the Life of Jesus to be like the star wars movies according to George Lucas?
Also wouldn't people have found that idea of Nero being someone who brings justice appear in early 2nd century as well as late 1st century since he would have only been dead for 32 years at 100 CE

    • @MattWhitmanTMBH

Funny you'd bring that up. I nearly added the "It's like poetry, it rhymes" clip right after I made that point, but I thought no one would get it.
I realize now I've made a terrible mistake.
