The matrioshka dolls are very nostalgic for me. When I would go to visit my grandmother as a child she had only one toy suitable for my age - a wooden matrioshka she got on a trip to the Soviet Union. When I got to her house, I would run to the cupboard under the TV in the living room to pull it out, and I would play with it the whole time. Whenever I see one it makes me think of her.

@@letterbox203 Haha you know it just occurred to me that those dolls are probably why I've had a lifelong fascination with Russia. Maybe these flea market trinkets will inspire someone else when they find their new home.

    • @letterbox203
      @letterbox203 Před 2 lety

I think the Matryoshkas had a similar affect on me. Plus Russia was always a mysterious place, a land that we would not likely ever enter. Our countries were enemies even.

My dad brought me a set from USSR when I was 6 ( I’m 56 now) I used to like to sniffl the wood inside and would imagine the huge Russian forests. When my daughter was little she used to play with them under my supervision then I would put them on a high shelf. Well to cut a long story short one day I came home from work and my husband had let her play with them and the second smallest was crushed and the tiny solid one was lost. Upset doesn’t come close !!
I finally got to Moscow and visited this very flea market. I didn’t buy dolls but picked up an old metal religious icon which is very cool.
Moscow is a very cool city and was so glad to go there when I did because it’s no longer possible for ppl from my country

I stumbled across this channel while surfing CZcams. This was an amazing experience. I have travel to many places in the world, and I have always said the there is a huge difference between the governments of a country, and the people that live there. I find you and Natasha to be warm and caring about others around them. You are obviously very proud of your country and your traditions and history.
I have met other Russians and for the most part, I find them as likable as you two. If we were to interact people to people and leave governments and politics out of it, this would be such a wonderful world to travel in.
Please keep making your videos as they provide a viewpoint not seen by many other outside of Russia.

I watched another Flea Market video on NFKRZ channel, he went to one in St. Petersburg, and that one was much different than this. This one looks like it's made more for foreign tourists, whereas the one in St. P had much cooler/useful stuff...there was a stall that had an old Soviet satellite for example, and a lot more places selling clothes, coats, etc. It was cool to see this one in Moscow though. I enjoy your content Zangieff!

That whole area would be cool to see setup as a living museum. A living museum is a place that recreates a historic era or setting and simulates life at that time period. Employees dress, act and interact with guests like they would in the period that the museum simulates. You learn a ton from these places and I always like going.
As for the matryoshka dolls, these have made it into American culture and art too. The album art for "Progression Through Unlearning" by the band Snapcase is a play on the concept of the doll and also used as a metaphor.

The glass ball with the Kremlin inside of it is called a 'snow globe'. They have been around for more than 60 years in the USA.
Newer ones will have a light inside, play a musical tune and it also will move the snow around--- So you don't need to shake it.
    All battery operated, of coarse!
Here they are also made as souvenirs of different cities, not just as Christmas ornaments. So a LA snow globe might have palm trees, the HOLLYWOOD sign, the ocean, and some surfers, etc.
It is either the silly snow globe or a refrigerator magnet that says Las Vegas or New Your City, Miami. Etc. for souvenirs for friends back home when you return from vacation. Sometimes people will have their entire refrigerator totally covered with various magnets. A bit tacky but also a bit fun, maybe.

In any case, they make great gifts here in the U.S. and all my life I didn't even know their names until just a few weeks ago! I have seen them in movies growing up. Russia seems so far away back then and unreachable and even so still today. Thanks for showing us the flea market and bell tower.

They are made in some souvenir factories in Moscow region, town, named Sergeev Pasad ( so called Sergeevskaiya matrioshka stile), Nizhnii Novgorod region (Semionovskaiya matrioshka, the bright yellow ones), they are the most popular. And there are some other stiles.

The Moscow Kremlin and Soviet Flea Market would be quite an interesting place to spend a whole day I think, thanks for the tour.
I agree with Natasha that some parts of the flea market seem a bit 'cheap and tacky' as we say in the west, I live in Australia, and this market reminds me of what we call the "trash and treasure markets" where you will find old/second hand and new stuff of every kind for sale, but much of the new stuff is often "made in China" and are cheap imitations of traditional items. Our indigenous ppl. are very upset at the huge quantities of Chinese made imports pretending to be original Australian Aboriginal creations.
There were a lot of Goths around that day, I enjoyed the video. 👍🏻👍🏻 A 'thumbs up' for each of you! 😏

I really like the folk village, when I lived in Korea they had a folk village there that was quite nice. The flea market looked a lot nicer than the ones that I seen here in the states.

13:54, we call them "snow globes". They usually contain some type of scene and when you shake them the particles inside given the impression that it's snowing.

People, when in Moscow, you need to go to this flea market. It has the largest selection of EVERYTHING, and at best prices. Bar none. Also, the Izmailovo Gamma delta hotel is one of the cheapest but good hotels to stay in Moscow. 3-4 star. From SVO airport, take aero express to Belarus'skya station. From there take metro to city center, (very close to red square etc). From there get on the dark blue line, (it go's North East-about 12-15 minutes, and exits near the Gamma Delta hotel. Hotel was built for the 1980 Olympics, (HUGE). Please note, they have rooms with A/C and rooms without. In summer ask for a room with A/C. Price difference is about 2-5 dollars per day. They have about 9 restaurant's, pool, exercise facility, bowling alley, shopping Wi-Fi etc. Good luck.
