November 20th, 1999. Undefeated “Big” Michael Grant takes on “The Powerful Pole” Andrew Golota in a WBC Heavyweight Title Eliminator, with his NABF Heavyweight Title also on the line in his first defense.
The winner of this fight will earned the opportunity to face Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion Lennox Lewis who held the WBC Heavyweight Title at that time (among other titles). 2 years earlier, Golota faced Lewis in a WBC world title fight and was easily knocked out in the opening round.
Prefight records; Grant 30(21)-0, Golota 34(28)-3.
Entering the bout, Golota’s most notable bouts were DQ losses to Riddick Bowe back in July and December 1996 where he was beating Bowe to the punch in almost every round but somehow unable to stop himself from fouling especially throwing low blows despite multiple warnings from referees in both meetings.
Although he officially lost those 2 fights, but he somehow proved that he was indeed a threat at top level particularly with the showcase of his skills, power and precision despite his notorious tendency to resort to dirty fighting.
Once a heavily hyped prospect, 27 year old Micheal Grant standing at 6’7” with an 86” wingspan amassed an impressive 30 win streak from his debut in July 1994 till his 30th fight in June 1996 where he picked up wins over notable oppositions in Lionel Butler, David Izon & Lou Savarese.
On the other hand, the 31 year old Golota from Warsaw had defeated the likes of Danell Nicholson & Tim Witherspoon (albeit a past best version).
From the opening bell, both fighters set their jabs up early and exchanged right hands but Golota was in better control and scored 2 knockdowns that badly hurt the undefeated young challenger who courageously rose to his feet although clearly shaken and bleeding in his mouth from the pinpoint assaults of the powerful Pole.
Andrew resumed control in the following round and landed more right hands but he was warned for holding and hitting behind the head and lost a point in the 3rd for low blows but Grant also connected with some shots below the belt line and received a warning too.
In the 4th, Grant was penalized one point for low blows and he also lost that round.
After 12 minutes, Golota was leading in the scorecards as he won rounds 1 and 4 by 3 and 2 points respectively due to his sharp jabs that allowed him to dictate the tempo and create openings for his strong right hand. Harold Lederman had the defending champion 6 points behind after the 1/3th mark.
Grant managed to get a second wind and come back to win the 5th and 6th as he connected with big right hands after reestablishing his jabs and shaken off the cobwebs from the Polish fighter’s early thunder.
Between the 7th and 9th rounds, the pace slowed down as both showed signs of fatigue but punches were traded more evenly but Golota was still more effective and ahead in the cards. However, Grant was gradually gaining momentum as the fight progressed into the championship rounds, despite having absorbed tremendous punishment.
Golota told the referee Randy Neumann he did not want to continue after rising from a knockdown in the tenth round.
By the time of the stoppage, the 3 judges had Andrew ahead 87-80, 86-81 & 85-83 while Lederman unofficially had it 86-81 for Golota.
With this win, Grant earned the right to face reigning Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion Lennox Lewis who held the WBC title at that time. The fight took place on April 29th 2000, where he was decked 4 times en route to a one sided KO2 loss despite a courageous effort.
After the devastating defeat, he was still determined to become world champion and made several comebacks. However, he was never again the same fighter due to the punishment he took against a prime Lewis, who is arguably the Greatest British Heavyweight in the history of the sport.
Hope you guys enjoy this highlight of a good albeit foul filled Heavyweight fight from the late 90s, and remember to SUBSCRIBE for continuous boxing goodness! Keep punching. - Sport
Golota was such a lost talent. Could box, punch. Had a jab, was slick and defensive. Shows you how important the mental side of boxing is.
Reminds me of Terry Norris mentally. Tons of talent (like you said) but a bit of a knucklehead.
@@onlyrog5 Yeah that's true. Norris really had everything physically
@Jakub Biskup definitely being generous 🤣
100 true how god give you wariors body , and mental of the doctor?
@@onlyrog5 they were not the same at all. Terry Norris had heart and a fought like a warrior. Golota would outbox you until you put heat on him, then he would quit. You had to put Terry Norris away. That was a sh!++y example. Go examine both their fights again. Sounds like you're trying to give Golota more props than he deserves. He was very talented but no heart
Golota is the king of snatching defeat right out of the jaws of victory
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I reckon!!!....it's sad too,he could have gone so far without that weird anxiety thing he had going
That's awesome haha 😂 great way to put it
Golata is the only fighter ive ever seen, repeatedly sabotage himself in the ring, out of frustration from winning 🤔.
When your career choice includes getting hit in the head by 240lb dudes you dont always make the best choices.
This fight was what actually destroyed Michael Grant. It gave him false confidence that he could actually beat Lewis. Golota was easily outboxing Grant and exposing all of his weaknesses. Too bad golota was a head case.
SelfMade I'd have thought that this fight put Michael Grant on notice just how hard it was going to be from here on. He must have known he was facing trouble trying to advance to the title, because, frankly, Golota was no Lennox Lewis.
Any win against Golota is a good.one.
Look what he did to Bowe, whom is as good as it gets in many ways, even if slightly faded.
Golota and Grant were unlucky that they faced Lewis when he was in the mood
Grant was just not in the same league as Lewis. Lewis ran through Golota in 1 round while Grant went life and death with Golota.
What's a head case again?
@@cmarvel411 head case is slang for a mentally unstable person.
Spectacular fight. Golota's fights were always action packed.
@Lavern right,it was a mental thing or either he was throwing those fights.golota was a great fighter but the big fights he always defeated himself
@Lavern He dominated Riddick Bowe in both fights and got robbed against Byrd and Ruiz. I would say he did well in all of his big fights apart from the Tyson and Lewis fights.
@Lavern Brewster was a journeyman, not really a big fight. Still shocking how easily Golota lost that fight though.
@@H.K.5 never thought of it that way 🤔
@@joseywales1975 he had hell of power though and was a talent just a complete melt head
Gollota was a beast, he could take the best they had. He would mentally melt down in middle of fight and by then the cumulative punches would take him out. He beat the crap out of big daddy Bowe then had a brain fart. I think that affected his career.
He just couldn't take any form of pressure or resistance in a fight, if he did he would start fouling or outright want the fight to be stopped. Shame because he was physically gifted and very talented
Golata couldn't take down Tyson
Golata fights like me playing Fight night with the ref awareness settings down so I can cheat.
People really believed Grant would beat Lennox lol. Dude was greener than grass, he is big and muscular but looks mean jack shit in boxing.
Well Golota was finished by both of them. What's your point? So the talented Golota was waxed by green Grant? Doesn't sound good for Golota to lose that fight then. Golota had success against one great and that was riddick bowe. And that's because styles make fights and Bowe was past his prime, and Golota threw dozens of low blows. It was so bad at one point that he flat out threw a 4 punch combo to riddick bowes balls
Not sure many believed Grant would beat Lewis just because he is big and outmuscles Lewis. I think most boxing fans would have expected Grant to last longer against Lewis because he is a decent boxer thats all. Grant did well here to weather Golotas initial storm in this title eliminator and pull out a victory with good boxing form, determination and resolve. Golota always seems to lose it when his best work doesn’t reward him as expected. Grant knew enough to persist and frustrate him with his awkwardness and disturb Golotas mental weakness (especially after getting up easily
after each knock down). He mixed this with nice inside combos and even picked him off with good long range shots. However, he needed more than this against Lewis. For a start Grant was easy to hit, had poor head movement, loses composure easily when hit to make that gangly awkwardness work against him more than it did for him, and his footwork was nothing special. Lewis had far superior footwork than both these guys and excellent defensive skills. Also If Lewis had anyone shaken with shots from all angles it was usually curtains! Grant and his coach simply underestimated Lewis’s superior ring craft, tact, KO power and killer instinct that works in all conditions.
Lewis was more muscular.
@@H.K.5 How does more musculature equate to success in the art of boxing?
@@Pulsonar I never said it does.
It’s a shame that Golata was so mentally unstable because he was actually an excellent boxer with tremendous power in both hands. Psychologically though he just wasn’t there.
Very true! Actually even in this fight he was doing very and he was missing a lot of the vicious punches. Had he gone on he probably would have won coz although he was down he still looked strong to go on, and he did not have to worry coz he had already scored 2 k.downs earlier in the fight. Also Grant had used up his reserve at this point and with most of his shots not hitting target it was causing mental wear.
He could have won this one, although mental stability is a crucial part of the game.
that ,,fight''' money fight, golota can beat she in 1 round
@@douglasochieng8906 he was just weak that's all. Michael Grant wasn't a great but the guy had guts and wasn't a pu$$y. And he took punches for several rounds before he finished Golota. 🤣 so much for a weak chin that you claim. Golota was soft when the going got tough and would quit coming off the stool. One punch and he quit. Grant was getting punched all night before he landed one. Now who has the weak chin? I know you white guys. Every black fighter has a weak chin if they show any sign of being hurt. But if it was the other way around for Golota, you would say they're heavyweights and that's normal. Stop it, you two timing hypocrite. Gtfoh
I always enjoyed George Foremans' color commentary. Very insightful.
Goes to show how great Lewis was ,despatched these two without breaking sweat
Grant was ass but beating Golota after he destroyed Bowe (despite the DQs) really showed folks Lewis was the real deal.
@@BooBooDaFoo330The Real deal for beating up Golota who lost to Grant??? Lennox was just a good boxer. Never, anyone spoke of Lennox Lewis as a legend because he was not one by any means.
@@hg8droid229 Golota threw fights for the mob. He was a nasty boxer when focused and Lewis is a legend…you’re crazy af tf you smokin
@@BooBooDaFoo330 Legend??? Who spoke of him as a "legend" in the boxing world? Nobody. The debate about who was the goat has always been Tyson or Ali? Lennox Lewis is just a legit champion and an incredibly boring boxer as well. Nobody is interested in watching training videos of Lennox. No new HW is trying to follow on his footsteps. Not a legend. Not.
@@hg8droid229 they don't emulate lewis because the fighters today are ass
Lewis tried to teach wilder.
Still ended up a clown
Lewis just couldn't teach that idiot anything.
Lewis was the best of his era.
And would have finished ali Tyson and foreman in their day.
This is when America thought Michael Grant was going to take over😁.Very good fight though.
He was working at my old job as a detention officer at clayton county sheriff's office in Georgia. He got fired for having improper relations with a inmate that was being tried for murder grant was a cool guy though but I think the losses later in his career affected him.
I remember Michael Grant that....around 1999-ish. I was waiting for him to be tested. He lost the test.
We are in 2020. Let’s wait into 2021 and see that 80% of the big heavyweight fighters will be tested and will lose. Only the 20% will go into 2022.
Every time an American fighter loses, every anti-American in the world comes out from under their rock and acts like everyone in America unanimously thought they were the next big thing lol. It's like when people bring up Calzaghe's win over Jeff Lacey to make it seem like Calzaghe's entire career wasn't camping a dead division in his home land before popping up to fight two 40 year olds at light-heavyweight, as if anyone in America actually thought Jeff Lacey was going to be the next Tyson or something based off his like whole 3 televised fights against people nobody knew. Give it a rest, would you?
@@williamsmith1803 good point 👍
@@sinceredarkskin9865 never heard that story. Can you link an article?
The first fight that exposed Grant.
How did it expose him though??
@@javantedavis1999
It showed that he wasn't the great American heavyweight sports media were hyping him up to be. A lot of people thought he would run through Golota.
@@irvinmorales1409 No one ever said that. Every one said Golota was a dangerous opponent for Grant because of his experience. You making stuff up dude. FYI Tua was getting all the hype at this time.
@@javantedavis1999 did you not watch the fight? golota was killing him until he threw the fight!
Grant was much closer to being KO'd in Round 1 than Golota was in Round 10...but Golota was the one to quit. A bizarre surrender, from the biggest waste of talent in heavyweight history.
What makes him the biggest waste in history?
@@TigrayBoxing Because Golota had the talent to be an all time great. Literally no other heavyweight of the last 25 years possessed his combination of speed, skill, size, power and athleticism. But because he was mentally unstable, instead he's best remembered as a guy who fouled and quit when the going got tough. A morbid circus sideshow instead of the well respected champion he could so easily have become. That is why he is the biggest waste of talent in heavyweight history. Should have been a legend, ended up a disgrace.
@@EyeMixMusic Besides the Bowe fights what other fighters did he beat that could suggest that he would be a legend? A lot of fighters had talent and skills but didnt become greats
@@TigrayBoxing There are no big names on his record, and that is exactly the point. The Bowe fights prove what could have been - Golota fought arguably THE best heavyweight of the 1990s, twice, and he boxed Bowe's head off both times. When you're a level above an elite fighter like Bowe and you underachieve as much as Golota did, that is HUGE wasted potential.
@@EyeMixMusic In my opinion Golota got blown out in one round by the best heavtweight of the 90's, Lennox Lewis. Lewis had better names on his record than Bowe. Did Bowe look like the same Bowe as in the first Holyfield fight and before that? Also styles make fight and Golota could maybe have struggled against other Heavtweights of that era so i think its to easy to say that he is the best heavtweight talent of the last 25 years. He even struggled against a faded Tyson before he quit. Look how tyson was percieved after the Spinks fight. Golota doesnt even get compared to that.
Golota could have been amazing!
He was amazing physically/athletically and technically, but weak mentally when it came down to the wire.
either that or he was throwing fights?......he does have mafia connections in Warsaw.....its very suspicious.
@@stavros693000 you can throw a fight a boxer is gonna fight you just like mike tyson fought him golota just outclassed this dude in movement an power golota had tremendous power but his chin was not nearly as strong as Tyson's
@@stavros693000 I meant cant

Great fight btw- Golata almost had him.
No he wouldn’t
I see Golota knocking out that coward who is choosing to take fights against has been MMA figfhters.
Today are allowed punches in the testicles?
Great fight, thank you.
ANDREW GOLATA was a talented fighter exciting in the ring tough as nails its shame how his career played out wish it was different 👊👊👊
Tough as nails? Golata? How many times did the palooka quit? At least twice against Bowe, and again against Grant. It looked like he quit against Tyson, but I don't blame Golata for that, because his eye socket was fractured. Lewis steamrolled him.
@@tswrench He had the mental strength of a 3 year old girl.
Awesome video!
Very entertaining fight between two evenly matched men. Both were decent heavyweight contenders but Golota lacked mental fortitude and Grant had a weak chin and poor balance. However, they both were hard punchers and physically very strong, but not in the same class as Tyson, Lewis or Holyfield. They were B grade heavyweights whilst the aforementioned trio were A listers. That's the difference. 🥊
Classic Golota. King of low blows and ranked #1 for giving up fights
I see similarities with Grant and Wilder in terms of that they were both heavily hyped American heavyweights, both tremendous physical specimens, yet both also had their limitations exposed, despite their heart, before their first loss. Grant was more polished than Wilder (not hard), but Golota was to Grant, as Luis Ortiz was to Wilder. Each won, but it came at a price.
Curious to see how Wilder recovers, as Grant went to pieces afterwards.
Golota and Ortiz are not comparable...Ortiz has the skills, heart and the mentality to finish...Golota was a weak minded quitter.
@@sugerhitman1295 Golota has 10 times the resume of Ortiz he fought Lewis,Tyson,Bowe twice beat Witherspoon and corrie sanders as well Ortiz has fought nobody and his only claim to fame is getting starched twice against an overrated Wilder who has beat nobody
Golata had more skills and natural ability, grant had more character and will.
GrAnt got gifted by the ref and golota
@@mvijay5128 No Grant won because he kept fighting and didn't quit something Golota always did when the going got tough.....

Golota was saying, “Hey, below the belt is my thing.”
Golota loved to quit.

He had it easy.
Golota could have been a better fighter/slugger had he had the correct mind frame and commitment, too bad that sometimes he chooses to fight dirty with lo-blows etc., Grant the forever Glassjaw did his best, this was a significant era to watch the heavyweights, must say that in my humble opinion Lennox Lewis has been the most significant heavyweight, well, after Muhammad Ali of course.
Other students bullied over him in the school. This is why his mental health was broken.
It's funny how you call Grant glass jaw but he finish Golota. Problem is not throwing nut shots. The guy simply had no heart once he got punched good on the chin. all the talent in the world but he was a quitter. So maybe Grant had a glass jaw but Golota had a glass heart
Lennox "significant heavyweight". Really??? Of course none have said ever Lennox is a legend because he is not.
Excellent video my dearest friend
Fully watched and stay blessed 😍👌💫💫💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
I was never more dissapointed than at this time, even after Bowe, Lewis or Tyson fights. Like always i ve been waiting for fight all night and he did it... I could not belive why he gave up the fight. He let all of us down terrible. Now i know, he just had psychological problems. Btw if he wanted be top Hw should been knock guy like Grant out without any problem. He could not, we overestimated Golota as a Poles.
some say he was throwing fights for his mafia friends in Warsaw....they even helped sneak him outta the country and into the US when he was up for an assault charge.....some of his losses are very suspicious....either that or he was just a mental fruit cake? im still undecided!
Golota could've been just as good as the Klitschkos, but he was a fuckin' headcase. He could've been first
He was actually better than both combine
The Klitschko's didn't come in a prime of Bowe,Holyfield,Mercer,Tyson,
Tua,Golota and Lennox was past prime at the time
@@earth7551 Nah, he didn't have the discipline or mental fortitude to be better than the Klitschkos. Boxing's 90% mental. That was his weakness.
Where was Golota's heart at? He gave up during Tyson fight also...

What heart? Lol
Golota ran from the ring to the dressing ..the camerman was behind following ..there were people throwing beer and bottles at golota !! ..way more physically tough than mental ...nwver knew how his fights were going to end ! ..lol.
@Bohanable Bo ...exactly right !! ..he gets frustrated and quits .
In fairness, Tyson elbowed Golota and broke his cheekbone. He was in tremendous pain. I can’t blame him for quitting TBF.
Galota never seemed to tire when the opponents were. Man must be speeding around more than me.
Golota was a better boxer but had no heart.
Good fight
So this isn’t just the first time dude quit a fight I see. So I don’t know what made him think he could fight Mike Tyson lmaooo 😂
Tyson kept headbutting him
Golota had no heart! "No" he said 😏
Brawo Andrzej 👍
They pushed Grant too fast! He would been a problem for the entire division had they taken their time with him, or he started his career much earlier. He only had 12 amateur fights, and actually starting boxing after 20 or 21. So, all the fights he did win were based on sheer athleticism and grit.
He most likely wouldn’t have won a title even in the very weak post-Lewis era. Golota, who’d been KO1’d by Lewis three years earlier, was outboxing him pretty comfortably. American fight fans in general do tend to overhype their own (see Jeff Lacy)
Best fight
I always dreamt of becoming a professional boxer, but after seeing the thumbnail, I think a firefighter will do for me.
4:38 That sound
Grant could have made noise in the heavyweight division, but too sloppy in defense!
Golota always looked very good until he met Lennox Lewis
Golota looked good until he took a good punch against anyone then he would quit
Lmao
He didn't warm up for that fight came in late no worm up
And Lennox didn't look good against Ray Mercer so much so that he didn't give Ray a rematch
And Grant was supposed to be the man that evander holyfield wanted no part of?
O problema de Golota estava na cabeça. Um grande lutador que não soube explorar todo a sua capacidade.
Brutál
Golota crumbling again?
Gołota won until KO...
I read some time ago that Golota said in an interview that he was sure he was losing that fight and had no chance to win so he said "no" after that knockdown. He was so dumb. If he only said "yes" he would fight a remach with Lennox Lewis.
He said he didn’t want to fight. Only he was feeling it.
Michael is a beast !
i could never figure out Golota......he had skills, a great jab, could box, decent movement..... he was never able to put it all together..

Increible. Gano el negro.
Grant fun and pretty damn tough.
He’d have wiped the canvas with Wilder.
Don't be ridiculous. Wilder would have killed Grant
Grant was knocked down “easily” but almost always got up unhurt. He could take it and he fought a give and take style. Wilder lacks punch resistance and seeks to evade and snipe. Grant would take his best and come back to impose to his will on Deontay like FURY did, by being a wall of man Wilder couldn’t deal with.
@@jeffreyfreeman4843 Lmao. You're completely delusional. Since when did Wilder "lack punch resistance"?

Obviously you weren't around during the 90s or you'd never come out with such a dumb and uneducated statement.
