November 11th, 2000. "Royal Rampage" was an Undisputed World Heavyweight Championship showdown between “The Pugilist Specialist” Lennox Lewis and the monstrous punching No. 1 World Heavyweight contender David Tua.
Lewis’ IBF, IBO & WBC World Heavyweight Titles were up for grabs.
Prefight records; Lewis 37(29)-1-1, Tua 37(32)-1.
In March 1999, Lennox Lewis dominated Evander Holyfield in a fight for the Undisputed World Heavyweight Championship where the IBF, WBA & WBC titles were on the line. However, Lewis was blatantly robbed of an apparent victory as the official verdict was a highly controversial 3 way draw.
8 months later, a rematch took place and Lewis earned his rightful nod this time; outpointing Holyfield over 12 rounds to become the new Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion.
In April and July 2000, he successfully defended his Undisputed World Heavyweight Titles via 2 easy 2nd round KO wins over top rated Michael Grant and Frans Botha respectively.
His next defense was set to be against the devastating David Tua. It was Lewis’ 3rd consecutive title defense in the same year against a highly rated challenger.
David Tua aka “Tuamanator” was considered to be the 2nd best heavyweight in the world at this time and often compared with a prime Mike Tyson. Although Lewis was a 3-1 betting favorite, many believed Tua’s vaunted left hook would pose a serious threat against him.
Expectations were sky high as the boxing world anticipated the possibility of one of the Greatest World Heavyweight Championship Fights to take place.
Entering the bout, Tua had commendable wins over Darroll Wilson, David Izon, John Ruiz, Oleg Maskaev & Hasim Rahman.
On the other hand, the veteran Lewis had beaten a great number of top oppositions in Gary Mason, Mike Weaver, Tyrell Biggs, Donovan Ruddock, Tony Tucker, Frank Bruno, Phil Jackson, Lionel Butler, Tommy Morrison, Ray Mercer, Oliver McCall, Henry Akinwande, Andrew Golota, Shannon Briggs, Zeljko Mavrovic, Evander Holyfield & Frans Botha.
From the early goings, Lewis set the pace from long range with his jab while Tua applied constant pressure in attempts to cut off the ring and pin Lewis to the ropes.
Tua enjoyed some early success as he connected with a couple of power shots particularly his left hooks but Lewis took the shots well.
However, as the fight progressed into the mid rounds Lewis gained total control of the action with his jabs and long right hands that kept Tua at bay, coupled with an impregnable defense to outclass the discouraged Tua who had no answers to the elite skills of the Big Brit.
Tua was not known to cut or bruise easily but after 12 rounds with Lewis, his face was reduced into a swollen bloody mask.
The outcome was a lopsided UD12 for Lewis who retained his Undisputed World Heavyweight Championship for the 3rd consecutive time against the 3rd top notch opposition in the same year.
Overall, the fight was a highly anti climatic affair and failed to lived up to expectations; the crowd booed throughout the 2nd half due to the lack of continuous action particularly by Tua, who seemed disheartened by his inability to finish Lewis with one punch. Many reportedly walked out of the arena before the fight ended.
“Hundreds of fans are streaming for the exit. They’ve seen enough to know who’s gonna win the fight, and they’ve seen enough to know what the 12th round is likely to look like”.
- Jim Lampley
Some had expected this fight to be stylistic preview of how a Lennox Lewis vs Mike Tyson clash might turn out. Oddly enough, when both fighters finally met in June 2002 it was similarly one sided in favor of LEwis who dominated Iron Mike en route to an easy KO8 win.
However, it should be noted that Tyson was well past his best at that point.
According to CompuBox stats, Lewis landed nearly triple of Tua’s connect rate at 300 to 110. And out of the 300 connected shots, 213 were jabs.
Hope you guys enjoy this highlight of a brilliant performance by one of the Greatest Heavyweights of All Time, and be sure to SUBSCRIBE for more boxing goodness.

Tua went his whole career without getting knocked out by anyone . I don’t believe he was even put on the canvas once . That is remarkable . He boxed in an era that had numerous quality heavyweights .
Monte Barrett knocked him down but Tua was past his prime by then.

He could of bet Lennox Lewis if used his power hand to counter Lewis lead Jab. But instead he came in with a mind set to only throw power shots. There is a difference between boxers and slingers

Yeah and he only fought one. You can see here how that went. It was a glorified sparring session for Lewis.
Lewis uses the jab as good as any HW ever. He uses it as a range finder, he uses it as a power jab, he uses it to pop shot you and stop you dead in your tracks because he doesn't ever fully bring it back, keeps it half way, and manipulates your movement with it to load up on the right. Wonderful fighter and top 5 HW of all time.

Lewis used his jab very well in this fight. I remember watching this as a kid..I was so mad at Tua... but I didn't know how good Lennox Lewis was..shame on me. Good heart out there Tua
Brooo same as.
Watched this as a kid and remember thinking Lennox was pussio for running and mad at Tua for not connecting lol.
Little did I know, Lennox was (and is) top tier - dismantled Tua for 12 with that nasty jab.
@@Watchwith_ello it wasn’t the jab. It was the fact that Lennox Lewis landed two clean right hooks that hurt and stunned and scared David tua at the start of the fight. David tua realised how strong and big Lewis was and backed off for the remainder of the fight, staying outside and not taking chances.
Simply put, Lennox Lewis was way too big and strong for David tua.

I remember this fight. As a Tua fan it was very frustrating. Everytime Tua closed the distance Lewis was able to clinch or run to open space,
But after its was all said and done, Lewis proved he was one of the best HW's to ever enter the ring.

@@rayromano6249 that's life... you have to do what you can with what you have
Such an excellent example of cerebral boxing by Lennox... He fought his fight... He wasn't trying to knock him out just land nice clean punches. The force a big man can hit with when simply concentrating on speed and accuracy is enough in its self... Plus his absolute confidence in himself made him extremely calm and therefore allowed him to stay fluid i.e. no tensing when throwing shots... Do it for long enough and it simply becomes too much for your opponent. Should be Sir Lennox Lewis... IMO
Give Tua some credit he was at a tremendous size and reach disadvantage and still managed to get some nice shots to Lewis. Lewis had all of the physical advantage height reach and weight!!
Lol come on. They both weighed about 250. But tua has that in a 5’10 frame. His legs, jaw, and neck were huge.
@TheEditor107 Lewis could box and didn’t just rely on landing a knockout punch.
Power is great, but once you come against a great boxer your done.
Just like Wilder when he fights Tyson Fury
Lewis pushing and holding in obvious fear!
Yeah tua was definitely an underdog and had a huge disadvantage
Same could be said for Tyson for just about all his fights.
Same fighting style and so-called "physically disadvantaged" but it's funny how that never applies when that same short stubby elusive animal slugger is looking virtually unbeatable as they maul through the competition, until a more polished superior boxer finally steps up and hands them their defeat.
I was not a Lenox Lewis fan back in the day but wow his Jab work was insane. He was a master at keeping you at a distance. He would just pick you apart with that jab then hit you with a one to haymaker.
I remember watching this next to my brother In the hospital. All the patients wanted to watch Tua but it was after hours and there wasn’t no TV nor they allowed any TV in the ward. So one of the uncles snuck in a TV and all the patients came to watch our guy lose the match to some points. Everyone was not happy with the Decision but it was over and there was nothing we could do. Tua will always Remain the Peoples Choice.
Lennox won fair and square
Lennox was waaaay superior

I'm a huge Tua fan, but Lennox took him to school lol.
3:58 "And there's the uppercut for the first time! And it wobbles Tua!" - In reality, Lennox landed a CLEAR right hand/left hook combination. Lampley was more a hype man than commentator.
Other than they try to make it exciting for the viewers… I bet that it is hard to be a commentator on a live event. Just saying
You're right this is clearly a despicable attempt to overhype this match! It definitely wasn't because he saw it from a different angle as the camera and had .5 seconds to make a comment about it.
@@josesolis6543 It is. I've been ringside for a few big events and it can be really hard to see details sometimes. It's fun as hell to be there, but for pure viewing clarity, nothing really touches multiple cameras switching up all the time.

I met Jim Lampley at the Lewis/Butler fight years ago. There were rumors about Lionel Butler being fat. I asked Lampley "is Butler in shape?" He replied, "What's in shape?". I said "220 and not fat, like when he KO'd Tony Tubbs." Butler came in around 250 lbs & got destroyed. Lampley was sort of a talking-head primadonna.

Lennox Lewis is one of the smartest boxing in history. Lewis fought every fight with a different plan. Amazing.

Lewis has a super long reach and used it to his advantage , he was good and tactical but boring compared to other heavyweights like tua

I don't think so. Just look at how much he let's himself get tattooed . He doesn't have great head movement he has subpar defense . I mean he has a decent jab he moves his feet ok but when you line him up with some the all time great heavy weights in there prime , this boy would get washed. Tht's why i didn't like when Lennox or Holyfield fought Tyson, he was just a shell of himself and they capitalized off the opportunity to fight Tyson. Having had dealt with jail time legal issues and mentally just wasn't the same Cus DA'mato trained Iron Mike. They beat a Tyson tht was depleted of his best attributes . I'm just saying. I think Lennox and Holyfield are all time greats i just don't think they're as high as some analyst puts them.

Tua reminded me of the boxer guys in Ninja Gaiden. They are far away and then all the sudden they are pinching you in the face. The guy basically teleports his fist into your face. It took many rounds for Lewis to figure out how to defend that flying left hook. A great fight. Mad respect for Tua.

I rooted against Lennox Lewis every time he fought because I couldn’t stand him. By the time his career ended I became a huge fan out of respect for his toughness and how smart he was in the ring. Salute Lennox !!!
That shows how people actually and usually stupid as fk.
Lennox was a great fighter. He avenged both losses and knew when to step down. He left the ring with all the belts, has all his mental faculties intact, managed his money well and kept his family together. For a professional fighter it doesn't get any better than that. Too bad many other great champions have not done the same. Lewis was truly a dominant force. I can remember that after Lewis regained the title against Rahman, he was getting the Yankees and Lakers pub on ESPN. It is just a shame he wasn't appreciated his whole career. In my opinion, he is arguably in the conversation for a top 3 Heavyweight of All Time. He would have done the same thing to a prime Tyson, Lewis only got more dominant with age. The jab was remarkable, the footwork, the chin was his only downfall. If you knock him down, chances are he isn't getting back up. Perfected his craft until he retired. He was landing very vicious shots on Vitaly in his last fight. The last man to win a round from him.
I gave Tua three rounds in this fight, I gave Tyson the first and ONLY round. I had it 117-111 for the first Holyfield fight and 115-113 for the second. The last heavyweight to beat every man he faced...including the avenged losses.
Foreman would have KO'd him
Prime Lewis vs. prime Tyson would have resulted in Lewis getting KO'd. Lewis did not have the chin to deal with Tyson's power, and Tyson clocked everybody during his prime.

Lewis could just box the entire fight. and copped only maybe 3 good shots from Tua, while giving Tua at least 20. Neither me nor Tua's corner nor George Foreman commentating could understand what Tua was doing, blowing his big title shot. Was he afraid of losing his BS "never been knocked down" brag?
Had this been one of those 15 round fights like in the old days: Tua would've collapsed before the fight was over.
Lewis used his hight & reach advantage to perfection. David Tua was one of the most dangerous & powerful boxers of that era, LL just outboxed him like he did against many great boxers. Great era for boxing👌💓
Indeed, and I like tua. If only he had the quickness and agility to get inside, it would be a bit more interesting.
@@cosmokramer7396 Not easy going inside LL to land that left hook, even Tyson struggled. LL was among the most skilled boxers of that time for sure🖒. But Tuaman had some chin, impossible to knock him down🙌
@@SuchitroMajumdar you are correct, not denying that. I really hate being one of those people, but had Mike been prime Tyson, with cus and or Kevin rooney, and had tua had prime Tysons ability to get inside, it would've been a much more dynamic fight.
@@cosmokramer7396 couldn't agree more... A prime Tyson was a destryer, he could have ripped any one apart, speed, reflex, power, he got everything... Kinda ruined his talent... His records r much inferior than his ability.
dude was s midget wale i get it
Ima tua fan but gtta give credit where credit is due lewis had a great gameplan for the fight n executed to the tee. He fought a great fight using his height n most of all his jab to keep tua in check. I mean it really was perfect. Tua was a beast but Lennox had all the answers that night.
Guy is an absolute legend the more I see and rewatch, the more I understand just how good LL was. Played with his engery well and way able to ride / evade Tua , if you need proof of how LL would have beaten a prime MT I think this was it or very close.
No tyson had way more head movement & most likely harder combinations when they landed..
David Tua was the sparing partner for Lewis before the Tyson fight..
2 of my favorite heavyweight! This was a great fight Tua was just out of reach and Lewis was smart and box beautifully...
It was one sided to Lewis but two great fighters

"Did you think there was anything wrong with [David Tua]?"
"Yo, what was wrong with David Tua was Lennox Lewis."

Tua throws his whole damn body into a punch.
What do you expect
And the corner post
He has to to reach him with such reach advantage
Something you don't see in towards Boxing.Lennox Jabs we're exceptionally Underrated
Another classy performance by Lennox, adjusting strategies on the hoof, masterful.
Tua was one tough dude, explosive and dangerous.
I don't feel like Lewis and the Klitschko brothers get the respect they deserve. Everyone in America worships Mike Tyson. Having probably never seen a Klitschko fight and blocking out the memory of Lewis. Lol. Don't get me wrong Tyson was a freak but I don't think he beats either ot the 3. In his prime or not.
@@stephenhembree4615 I'm sure you are right about those three not getting the respect they deserve.
The enduring problem with the Klitschkos' legacy, is of their own making. They chose to share the spoils rather than fight each other for supremacy. Whereas Joe Louis, Rocky M, Ali, Iron Mike and Lewis fought all contenders.
As for MikeTyson, his explosive speed and power combined with his understated defences, IMO means that at his peak he could potentially, have beaten anyone at their peak. But these debates spanning different eras, can only ever be hypothetical.
@@glynhannaford7332 I wouldn't fight my brother for money either. And as far as legacies go, No one ruled the heavyweight division as long as Wladimir. And he ducked no one.

Lennox Lewis is definitely one of the heavyweight GOATS. Probably top5. He schooled Tua in that fight, put on a boxing masterclass.
Top 3 easy.
Lennox Lewis is sex reassigned ...born a female.
Lewis had all the attributes and knew how to use them. True champ.
Lewis and Tua are two of my favorite boxers

This fight is the cure for AJ to win the Rematch against Ruiz
Right on the money
He has to have enough tank and starmania to go the distance if he has to. He must be able to handle some shots as-well . Lennox took it anyway and was very smart
AJ is not as good or durable as Lennox
power ranger I don’t think so, if he control the fight of course he can go the distance, he proved it against Parker and Klitschko. He just has to be smart and take his time to break Ruiz down
Except that Joshua has a glass chin...get caught once and he done...lol
0:23 Tua's guard and form is crazy!
It's like a mix between the cross arm guard and peek a boo style weaving
Lennox Lewis deu um show de boxe slk
I remember Tua did a really good impression of Michael Buffer in one of the pre-fight press conferences. Would enjoy seeing that again.
'Outclassed' by height and reach, makes it pretty tough for Tua to get in.
If the same height Lewis wouldn't have done much.
Joe Lewus If my grandma had a pair of bollocks she’d be my grandad.
I don't think you're smart enough to know your grandma from your grandad
Joe Lewus I don’t think you’re smart enough to understand a phrase.
Lewis never avoided anyone. He would fight the veterans (Tyson, Holyfield) fight the upcoming superstar's (Vitali & Rahman) & even the risky fights (Tua & Golata).
Loser100 Sir he avoided second fight with Vitali. Lewis clearly lost first fight to Klitchko.
Manar Oraz How? He beat him so bad; the doctors had to step in and that’s Lewis when he was way out of his prime.

Tua steadily moved into Lennox's power hand. Looking to "hopefully" slip it or eat the shot to try and get close. What we saw was Lewis constantly being wary of throwing it unless absolutely sure it could land, using his extraordinary reach advantage in this contest. Ready at any moment to ride the bike backwards away from Tua.
Tua was not outclassed. He had a 70" reach. Stayed the course, showed heart, and consistently tried to land some good shots on Lennox Lewis.

Most definitely!!!!
Larrypint either of them would clean this era up
Ibeabuchi went crazy and downhill after that fight...what a waste, he could've been another good heavyweight..
Still my favorite to this day.
Still has the record for most punches thrown in a heavyweight fight I think.

Bro I swear if tuas reach was at least 5 inches longer the knockout would have been guaranteed

Bruno S. Silva ......are you BLIND?!!
Lewis....is NOTORIOUS for pushing down on the back of his opponents neck if they duck low.
Lewis also puts his left glove, PALM SIDE UP, in the face of his opponent so he can throw the right hand unseen. Larry Holmes did this as well and it’s a BLATANT foul. (Look at Lewis’ fight with Frank Bruno. Right before Bruno was knocked out the referee stopped Lewis to warn him of his shenanigans. Lewis is a clown.)
Lewis also would throw his bodyweight on his opponent during clinches if his opponent got lower than him.
All things shit fighters do.

Mis respetos para Tua por pelear con ese gigante
This clip makes the fight look a lot more exciting than it was to watch live. It was pretty one sided the entire fight
One of the most technical, hard hitting HW's ever and he's always been underappreciated. He could box, keep his opponents at range with his jab, he could brawl when needed and he was also great inside. He had a devastating right hand as well as uppercut.
Defeated every man he ever fought, very few HW's can say that.
Rahman knocked lewis out he didn't know where he was !

Tua had a cool entrance with the Samoan music and the island necklaces though. He was a warrior, no doubt! He just faced an opponent who not only had a lot of physical advantages over him, but Lewis knew how to USE them. Props to Tua and respects to the Samoans.

Yes, he put on a clinic
@@dr.andersonsghost4315 Morrison was heading downhill at that time, and had a glass jaw. Lewis was great, no doubt. But he could be beaten with the correct tactics. With a couple of rematches to avenge his defeats Lewis was one of only three heavyweight champions in history to beat every opponent he ever fought. The others were Gene Tunney and Rocky Marciano. If Tyson Fury sticks to his retirement ( or doesn't lose ) he will become the fourth, he'll also join Rocky as the only champions never to be defeated.
Lennox was great I'd never take anything away from him. But I will say this. You better be a world champ if your gonna have that big of a reach.
