This is a fantastically rare opportunity to see the same person portray a character live and animated. You can see the difference in the energy between the two versions, even though the character has the same mannerisms.
It's really different standing there, in the uniform, under the lights, with a camera crew pointed at you, possibly just after running for a few scenes, compared to in jeans and a tee-shirt, sitting on a stool, talking into a mic in a sound- and climate-controlled room. Both Jack and Tawny slip from their "telephone voices" (almost everyone has one) we know as their characters to something much more subdued and casual on a lot of occasions. The funny thing is that the mannerisms are what they both had to learn, since their animated versions aren't motion-capture. But, that's why it was more in their thoughts.
Well tbh I'd imagine he'd have to dial down the energy cause the animated version is clearly made to have a lil bit more umpth for comedic effect, if they wanted to transfer the cartoon to to this live action show they would of had to respect the tone of said show, and they did that perfectly. @AgentGodzillaRP -- In ST:LD? Indeed they do, if only broadly. *:)* Of course, there are exceptions as well, for those LD characters too non-human, such as Gillian Vigman as Dr. T'Ana. In the overall Animation industry, it has been a loose but consistent tradition to animate, if only broadly, as close in relation to their Voicers as possible. This has two important factors... - a.) It respects the Voice Actor, giving them a measure of imprinted immortality. - b.) It helps invest the Voice Actor to their role. This tradition of trying to animate close to their Voicers is far from absolute (again, some characters are simply too non-human to do such with), but if you go back through the literal decades/generations of animation, you will see *_many_* parallels between animation subjects and their Voicers; yet again, if only broadly (such as facial contours).
@@pendrake40 I don't think Noel Wells is going to be a problem. I mean sure, she might look slightly different compared to her animation counterpart. But that's what animated format is anyway. They're just a certain "artistic style" to it compared to live action. It doesn't have to be 1:1 a copy of each other. Like take Ahsoka for example, she has a certain look from her Clone Wars and Rebels animated series, but her live action portrayal looks different. And that's okay. The animation are just the artistic expression of the artists drawing them in their own style and interpretation. Even her clone wars look and rebels look are different due to the different animation and artistic styles of both series. I think any voice actors from the lower decks can turn into a live action series without any problems. We'll get used to it as viewers.

The poet?” or "Erica Ortegas, still holder of the record for the Kassel run". The writers should have had more fortitude and challenged the fans obsessions for continuity... @@colemacgrath2005 - The Eugenics wars happen thirty to forty years later, now. If that doesn't change the timeline, then La'an Noonien Singh can publish a somewhat obscure book of poetry in her old age, of whom Boimler is a fan, without it being a contradiction to current lore (and God knows La'An would love to know it). @@TenmaStupidity There's some video on YT where it's shown that the 1701-D is almost uninhabited in comparison to the 1701. One thing I might point out is that SNW is shot in 16:9 and TOS/TNG-style set design would leave us seeing an awful lot of wall at that aspect ratio. I noticed how in ST:FC the 2.35:1 (Widescreen Cinemascope) aspect ratio led Frakes et al. to show the ships from closer-in points of view.
I wish that Tendi, Rutherford and especially T'Lyn also travel back with Boimler and Mariner.
*@Jayjay-qe6um --* It would have been nice, yes. But only partly feasible... *;)*
1. *_Eugene Cordero_* could _EASILY_ live-play Samanthan Rutherford. The only debatable point being whether to use a physical prosthesis for Rutherford's cybernetic implants (a la Jeri Ryan for Seven of Nine), or CG-animate/-overlay upon Cordero.
2. *_Noel Wells_* is more problematic for live-portraying D'Vana Tendi. While Tendi is (broadly) animated as close to Wells as possible, Wells is *NOT* Tendi's height and build, physically.
3. The same goes for *_Gabrielle Ruiz_* for live-playing T'Lyn, Ruiz may facially resemble T'Lyn, but does not have the comparative height and build.
4. This is not to say it is not possible, of course. Between the de-aging technology of *[Captain Marvel (2019) film]* and the Fantasy Dwarves of the *[Middle Earth film franchise],* it could be done; but how cost-effective it is then, now, and later (if another such CrossOver occurs), we will see.. *;)*
@AgentGodzillaRP -- In ST:LD? Indeed they do, if only broadly. *:)*
Of course, there are exceptions as well, for those LD characters too non-human, such as Gillian Vigman as Dr.
@@pendrake40 Plus, in the context of the show, it’d be difficult for a human to be walking around with late 24th Century cybernetics without polluting the timeline, and it might give too much away about the future to see an Orion officer in Starfleet while they were dealing with Orions in the episode.
@@SpaceCase132 didn't Kirk hooked up with an Orion at the Starfleet Academy in the Kelvin timeline?
spoimler strikes again
Great mash up, it fits perfectly.
This was the second most “right in the feels” scene.
This season of strange new worlds is really insane . Each episode is even better . I hope the writters don't screw the show in the future 🖖🖖🖖 .
Eh, I don't think they can tbh.
I just worry if they have an occasional dud that people overreact. The Musical Episode, if its great fantastic but if its a dud nothing gained nothing lost.
@@forrestpenrod2294
true, star trek has had quite a few duds in its long history. with some exceptions pretty much the first two seasons of TNG were not bad but very middle of the road.
Lol.
This episode was really weird. Was it some kinda bonus episode
Kirk
I kind of want Boimler to go through this with a time traveler in his own time.
One has to remember that Spock is half human Vulcans do have emotion it's just most Vulcans have learned for thousands of years to suppress their emotions
Poor Chapel. She falls for Spock, but he rejects her. Her fiancé disappears, becomes an android, and then dies.
He really DOESN'T become an android. Spock in TOS would snark back at McCoy, tease Kirk, made jokes, and was overall rife with ribbing and sarcasm, while also giving pep talks. He just hid it under 'vulcan control'. But he was by no android, or robot. His emotions, while subdued, were often quite palpable.
Not Spock; her fiancée, Roger Korby.
@@calumroberts1212Wait, Mr. Korby? Who messages Chapel in this most recent episode of SNW?
@@RavenclawNimbusYep, same guy. He was originally in the TOS episode "What Are Little Girls Made Of", where it revealed that Chapel studied under him, they got engaged, then he went missing and eventually created a crazy android duplicate of himself before he died. SNW has been foreshadowing that storyline in recent episodes.
She sure knows how to pick them.
In the 80s and 90s I saw Dennis Quaid everywhere on tv and film. Now I get to see Jack in this new era of tv and film.
And he voices Superman
This was done so well. I absolutely loved these two episodes.
Spock smiling really is the most terrifying thing ever 😂
3:46 Boimler doesn’t know that very big fact about Spock that I Starfleet has covered up.......
Namely Discovery
boimler should've just said that by his time the alpha quadrant is mostly explored. they're exploring the beta quadrant. voyager just returned from the delta quadrant. that they made war with a species from the gamma quadrant taht lasted 3 years.
also boimler should've told christine that he got the entire spock anthology encyclopediaas 10 volumes. that would probably freak her out lol
If only the Spock Anthology was real and purchasable.
Yeah, he's gonna break more of the Temporal Prime Directive if he does these 🙄
@@LGranthamsHeir as sulu said let the regulations be damned.
@@joeswanson733 Janeway: "To hell with the Temporal Prime Directive!" 🖖
Boimler wouldn't do that. But Mariner would
Spock and Chapel’s relationship is mentioned in before, and Boimler ended up saying what we already knew about the relationship going forward.
All of this changing history stuff in this episode just made me think of scottys quote "how do you know he didn't invent the thing"
Everything they're "changing" has already happened, it's the past
Did Boimler inadvertenly save the galaxy at the cost of a romantic relationship?
I don't know about you, but I'd call that a bargain.
@@edwalgino1 A bargain with a grinning, chuckling Q, yes.
"and why do half the women on this ship sound like our ships computer!"
That look of pain on her face for a moment there is so much.
This time travel was predestined. He needed to tell her what he did about Spock or they never would have separated and would not go on to be the Spock we need. Him being there is what is supposed to be.
Fun fact- the original nurse chapel actress also plays Diana Troy’s mom on next Gen😊
Indeed. And her first role was Number One to Captain Pike in the very first Star Trek pilot episode.
@@ValerieFulmer yep, forgot about that one 😆 pretty awesome actress and great career.
that was by far one of the best star trek episode from all the star trek there is
2:45 “That’s terrifying” - Howard Wolowitz TBBT
This episode was better than I thought it would be.
Imagine if he meets spock a second time and he turns out to have been putting on an act for years.
1:32 Oh hey, more Andorians.
This Enterprise is a 5 star hotel. Everything looks EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE.
I love this episode. It’s so well written. One of the best ever.
I love the subtle cartoon coloring of his hair.
1:04 I often imagine meeting the crew of the Enterprise under Pike from Strange New World and going back to the 23rd century with them.
And OMG if Chapel and Ortegas were to approach me like they're doing with Boimler and sitting down next to me, I would be so shy and stuttering because I actually have a little crush on Chapel. 🤭
Absolutely loved that crossover episode.
For those who don't know, they keep mentioning Spock's pet sehlat because his pet features heavily in Ep 3 of 'Star Trek: the animated series', in which Spock is sent back in time through a mysterious portal.....
Yes, the best episode of the original animated series called "Yesteryear." It was written by the phenomenal D.C. (Dorothy) Fontana.
It’s crazy boimler is just as cool in live action
This was probably the one real point where he pissed me off because you can almost blame him for what happens later in rhapsody lol.
Facts
exactly. the Spock he know is different from the one he read in the history books a century later when he should've realized that Spock is pushing 30 and only been in Starfleet for like 7 years.
They knocked it out of the park with this series.
I still can’t get over how cute the actress is who plays nurse Chapel. 😍
Its the piano tinkle music about Spock and Chapel that gets to me.
2:44 - *_Someone PLEASE meme this uncanny valley GOLD!!!_*
I have to say, live action boimler towers over everyone
Jack Quaid is nearly 6'2''.
Holy Crap, this would make Ransom and Shaxis 7 and 8ft tall. In the future, Star Fleet really jacked up the super soldier diet regimen in response to the Dominion War.
I can't believe no one asked about the purple hair and eyebrows.
hair dye isnt *that* uncommon. though future regs may be more lax in boimlers time
Yeah, along with the jetpacks, green skin, blue skin, telepaths, and faster than light travel they have... peroxide?
@@jmackmcneill Never mind all that nonsense. I want to know about the science fiction process behind dying your eyebrows purple.
And while we're at it, what science-fiction hair product is Pike using?
Just because you're afraid to ask the real questions doesn't mean we all are.
Spock laughing at the portal was the funniest thing id seem in years!!
Can anyone identify the music playing from 3:43 til the end of the scene?
🙏🖖
I cant find it & the perfect choice for this bittersweet scene.
I love nurse Chapel
Spock smiles. Boimler :does not compute
He points to 2 Andorians walking by saying 'Having all these Aliens who are still Alien"........Andoria was one of the Founding worlds of the Federation...they've been dealing with Humans for almost 100 years at this point.....
Ever notice that Star Trek crew members often stop the turbolift to have a private conversation. It makes other crew members who are waiting for the turbolift wait longer.
Great star trek show this episode was the gem of the entire 2nd season very funny
sooo, did he just caused them to break up ?_
Hopefully.
@@Captain-Panda lol
4:14 what is that background music? Its so beautiful
It is just so sad because I really ship SNW Chapel x Spock. I still hope they may end up with another branching universe where they end up together and Pike is okay.
nice little Enterprise call back that even a century later, a starship named Enterprise is still having Movie night.
To be fair. Spock smiling like that is creepy as hell.
i have watched this episode today. it was awesome, but it was also strange to see how they tried cartoon behavior with actors :D
Best Star Trek show ever.
It's like when you see Batman smile. You wonder what's wrong and fear that you did it.
I think Boimler was trying to calculate a slingshot maneuver to get back on the P.A.D.D.
Imagine how you would feel if you thought you BROKE SPOCK. Holy crap. Considering the circumstances, Boimler's doing awesome!
And here boimler thought he would escape beckett's merciless trolling be being in the past.
Smiling Spock is just a prelude to the pilot where the character smiles in it. I think this is what the writers are going for here.
THE BEST FUKN EPISODE OF ANY AND ALL FRANCHISES
The thing that strikes me is...just how fucking TALL Quaid is! He towers over everyone else.
his dad, dennis is like 6'0. and jack is 6'1.
She is really opening up.
Everybody on the crew is too.
This guy is great. (So is the nurse) 😉
2:44 that is just so creepy.
Grandfather paradox, his comment spawned a party that spawned a holiday that spawned his comment.
No but if Chapel stayed with Spock we maybe wouldn't have the Spock/Kirk dynamic that we eventually have. ie Kirk is the only other person that has made Spock smile
Making our lovely Nurse Chapel cry? Shame on you, Boimler!!
well... its boimler. he is like a dogpuppy. you cant really be mad at him but sometimes he just grinds everyones gears without even knowing
that was a very creepy smile on Spock!
Yeah, the kiss did transfer eventually. The feelings were not what I expected either.
Unfortunately however, I've already mentally traced their origins and those two that showed up in Discovery aren't who they appear to be either. :P
Every time I watch this scene, I can't help but think that Ortegas is flirting with Boimler...
Something tells me these two will be back again reeking havoc like two new Q's
Personally, I would have loved for Boimler to drip details on other members of the crew, beyond the ones that appeared in TOS.
I craved to ear Boimler let out something like "La'An Noonien Singh? The poet?” or "Erica Ortegas, still holder of the record for the Kassel run".
The writers should have had more fortitude and challenged the fans obsessions for continuity... After all, this is NOT the original timeline any more.
The Eugenic wars happened in the 2030s, now.
It’s still the original timeline, according to CBS
@@colemacgrath2005 - The Eugenics wars happen thirty to forty years later, now.
If that doesn't change the timeline, then La'an Noonien Singh can publish a somewhat obscure book of poetry in her old age, of whom Boimler is a fan, without it being a contradiction to current lore (and God knows La'An would love to know it).
Nurse chapel can go on to teach Archeo-Medicine at the Starfleet Academy and become a terror for students, whispered about decades after she retired.
And Pelia would probably still be around, too...
I still count Boimler restricting his fawning only to the TOS characters (and Ortegas) as a bit of a missed opportunity.
Literally everything you do has a butterfly effect!
I understand fans of Lower Decks were pleased as punch with this crossover episode, but as I am not a fan of the cartoon, for me it is the nadir of the Strange New Worlds series.
If only they included the scene that put the smile on Spocks face.
Never seen the show so Spock is infected or boimler is with the smile curse from that movie smile.
Boimler is quite a cutie.
hahaha I just got it below decks character comes to life. He's a bit camp though, wasn't like that in below decks, more a kiss ass officer pleaser. Should be a fun episode.
