Get a lot of questions and some think I'm lying about the temperature (no, I never have). If the title says -30, it should go without saying that that's the LOW for the trip...the temp fluctuates, of course.
So I made a video for the top 11 FAQs I get about winter camping:
*1) If it's so cold, why can't you see your breath?* czcams.com/video/a_nrGUte8dM/video.html
*2) If it's so cold, why is there slush on the lake?* czcams.com/video/a_nrGUte8dM/video.html
*3) Why aren't you melting snow for water?* czcams.com/video/a_nrGUte8dM/video.html
*4) What is the temp inside the tent?* czcams.com/video/a_nrGUte8dM/video.html
*5) Why winter camp at all?* czcams.com/video/a_nrGUte8dM/video.html
*6) Why aren't you wearing snowshoes?* czcams.com/video/a_nrGUte8dM/video.html
*7) How do you poop when it's that cold?* czcams.com/video/a_nrGUte8dM/video.html
*8) Aren't you worried about carbon monoxide from the stove?* czcams.com/video/a_nrGUte8dM/video.html
*9) Aren't you afraid of animals attacking you? Where's your gun?* czcams.com/video/a_nrGUte8dM/video.html8
*10) How you you power your devices?* czcams.com/video/a_nrGUte8dM/video.html
*11) Why don't you use a floor?* czcams.com/video/a_nrGUte8dM/video.html
Hope it helps clear some things up.
Friend I love your channel. I have had this video saved as a watch later for a while now. Maybe since month's back. I loved to subscribe because you treat camping the exact way I would and take a book along. That is pretty bad hearing about your friend's mishap. I asked some ice fisher's in PA once what was the thickness of the ice and they said 3y inches deep. I still didn't feel very comfortable and walked back to shore. If anything trust your gut. 😊. Have a good Summer 🌞.
Bro I've been ice fishing my entire life and always took every precaution possible, until last winter I was off grid with snowmobiles at a lodge and went to get firewood down the lake because there wasn't much good jack pine close to camp. My buddy who was with me at the time didn't have a float suit and I did, he ended up going through an otters breathing hole it was late January as well, I turned around and he was neck deep and his legs were entangled in roots and sticks from the bank... Anyway lets just say he was lucky my adrenaline was through the roof because he weighed nearly 100lbs more than me not including the water soaking in his clothing, somehow I managed to yank him out without going in myself... Cheers stay safe :)
Oh man, such scary stuff. Happens to anyone, and when/where you least expect it eh
Wow! It must have been around 18 c here in the uk early morning, I’d kicked off my duvet and sheet, my shivering woke me up. I know it would be crazy for me to ever do something like this. My body isn’t good at maintaining body temperature. My partner had kicked off the duvet & sheet and was fine. I’ll stick to watching these amazing videos 😁
Wow. Adrenaline is such a “good friend” to have in your back pocket when it’s needed. Glad you and your bud came away safe.

Incredible story!
Hey Jon,
I just feel like I owe you a thank you. I have been stuck in my apartment quite a lot lately due to health issues. But what I am craving is nature. I recently discovered your channel and have spent many hours watching you and Erin's adventures. The videos have brought me a lot of peace. Take care. Many thanks from NYC.
I really appreciate that CJ! I spent most of my life in Toronto and I know the feeling of having the human need for nature unmet. Hope you'll be doing better and back in some fresh air very soon, and that the vids give you a dose of peace in the meantime 💚
Ditto. As an Aussie with Covid in Vietnam I watch this from my bed.
Same, I'll never be fit enough to ever get to any of these amazing & pristine places. Thank you, love your respect for nature as well. 😊
"Japanese Abandoned House Renovation" is another nice way to spend some hours.

Not sure if people realise the amount of work that goes into the planning and edits on this. I for one really appreciate it!!!
Really appreciate that Dave!!
The best 37 minutes on the tube… -35not a big deal when you have prepared and understand how to survive in cold conditions.. well done Jon..
Thanks a million Jim! Learned a few cold lessons to this point...more left to learn I imagine :)

It wasn’t -35 the whole time at all. Handling the fish without gloves, getting your fingers wet, and still puttin gloves on as quick as you can…in -35/40 your hands would be gone in like 10 min. Great video, but that’s like late winter/ spring
Nice little outing. Love that big boy stove. That was a beautiful creature and a lucky encounter. Good stuff as usual Jon!!
Would love to see you two do a hectic winter trip together… one where ya need each other more than a trip with steaks and friends in a hot tent
Oh she a big boi alright. Got an even bigger boi since.... Thanks brother!!

Coming from north country myself, I love the winter views. We are fortunate, that were born/live here. Not as cold here in Michigan, it rarely dips much past -15...except for the polar vortex winters back in 2012-2014 where we seen wind chills of -30's. It is a force to be reckoned with and carefully prepared for. Excellent video!!!!
Much appreciated!! Those temps are certainly nothing to mess with...can turn bad fast
Hello, from Berrien County Michigan!
Filleting a trout with ice auger is the most Canadian thing I’ve ever seen 😆 Good thing you had that auger multi-tool 2.0!
Scary too. I've cut myself on one of those.
😆😆
Hi Jon, I love the way you take things in stride. No matter what the occurrence you seem to overcome all obstacles. Your confidence as a true woodsman is apparent but you also exude a peaceful mindfulness that is a great example for all of use. Thank you!
Truly appreciate that bluejacket!
I agree
Jon, thank you so much for your content! Hope to see you review one of the tents manufactured by RBM Outdoors. Can't wait to see what you have to say ❤
Thank you again, Jon, for taking us along for the ride. I have to say your mood/setting shots are unrivaled in your genre, and did I detect some influence from the Xander school of video editing (quick cuts of wood stacking)? Nice to have an uneventful trip after last week, which just proves the universal constant: the wave corrects itself. You deserved that
Truly appreciate that Brian! I definitely draw a lot of inspiration from Xander. I think firewood prep is important to touch on because it's part of the experience but I prefer Xander's style on that vs. the 5-minute detailed footage of sawing lol
Used to go winter camping in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta every winter in the 80's and 90's. Loved it. Saw amazing things and enjoyed every minute no matter how cold it was. Thank you for helping me rekindle my younger years!
Could the steam at 0:40 have been decomposition? I saw at least a couple other spots steaming (not just log piles). Hard to imagine anything out there producing that warmth with so many nights in the -30s this winter.
Yes, decomposition is exactly what I was thinking. My compost piles steam like that in the winter.
Crazy how that process can be sustained in these temps!
i thought maybe a beaver house
Hmmm. That’s a valid theory to consider.. How about marking those spots and then revisiting them when the snows gone.
Great video by the way Jon (as usual), Thanks
That's what I was thinking. Something might have been composting there
Stove beauty~~~
Interested in that strange cord/line under the water.
Hahah me too...you're the first person to comment on it Shug
I like these 'serious' adventure videos: not just 'parachute in'; take some footage and get home for dinner with the family.' The starry sky and illuminated tent frames were awesome. The feeling that a hot tent is still survivable (even comfortable) shelter for several days can't be conveyed on a day trip.
Thank you again James!
The steam coming from the hole when you walked in might be a spring - I live in Mn. And we have many spring fed lakes - where the spring feeds the lake it usually stays open even in -40 weather. The spring water is warmer from underground.
Thanks for this David. I thought it would be unusual for water to be flowing here given I was a bit higher up, but it very well could be
I realize this is couple of years late but…Was thinking maybe bear den. I recently saw video where someone pointed out the same type of thing saying it was a bear den.
Back in the late 1980s we were making a trail from one lake to another to build our camp. I was walking on the ice and went thru with a brand new snow ❄️ mobile suit on. It smelled like swamp water. Days before when were at the camp that we stayed in, the snowmachine went thru the ice at the bank of the creek. The ice auger in the carrier stopped it from sliding in backwards and sinking. I am to old for that crap now. The night sky shots were amazing. A wood stove is a man's best friend in the cold.
Yikes man...it's unpredictable stuff. Funny enough the guy I was with who went through only went up to his waist because he was holding the auger parallel to the ice. He said it was the only thing that saved him from going all the way in
Just beautiful. The pace was perfect. Watched on a big screen with the lights turned off, you get a real feeling of being there (minus the 55 or so Celsius degree difference between my living room and your surroundings). What's also really enjoyable is reading all the comments here ... quality people tuning in !
Really appreciate that canoeman! You're too right, more kind folks than I could ask for :)
I've found steam coming out of the ground a few times here in northern Alaska. I dug down and found spruce bows from forestry operations that had been buried. They had been breaking down (rotting) for some time which causes heat from a lack of O2. So I cleared out the other debris and made my bed there. Keep fairly warm that night. Basically like a compost pile getting hot.
Pretty amazing it can generate heat in such temps
I grew up in a cold weather state myself (Illinois). I love camping in the cold weather. But you're taking this to whole new levels! You have my respect!
No bugs!
I can remember being on Mt. Washington in New Hampshire at -50F in an igloo. And as you said it was so quiet I could hear the snow flakes hitting on the snow next to me. Rough weekend at 50 below with 105 mile an hour winds, I believe that would be around 85 below wind chill. Oh the good old days. Thanks for taking me with you ...Cheers
That's intense! Thanks for joining me William!
Amazing video dude! So much appreciation for all the work that goes into the filming and editing of a video of this caliber!
Really appreciate that TCV!!
Great Video! I consider myself an experienced outdoorsman, but I learned so much through this experience you shared with us. It looked cold as hell but stunningly beautiful, especially the night shots with the the unpolluted night stars! Even better ... You caught one of the worlds best meals, in my opinion of course.. Thanks for the insight. Catch you on the next video! Stay safe, calm, and cheers.
Epic John loved this one. Whiter camping is a mission. Great idea to have camp set up. What boggans are those ? They look easy to pack with enormous amounts of gear lol a downfall of mine... pretty wild someone going through the ice that heavy snow causing water to well up not good freeze up and possibly recent pressure crack may have been reason. But just wild this time of yr still. I have seen some really trash ice on super cold years however so you never know.
Thanks a lot Ted! Just the good ole Pelican Trek 60....they're great but the way I see people haul freight toboggans so easily, the more I think that's the play. Yeah it's such a wild card, scary thought if it happens alone out there
Whoooo good
Hey Ted! Love your channel too💕
What I've always enjoyed about winter camping in Washington State on the clear nights is the meriad of stars like you've shown. It never fails to amaze me. It let's me know how small I am, but how strong my inner spirit is. Thank you.
Late night here in Sweden in the middle of summer and this video makes me longing for the long, cold and dark arctic winter. Thank you for doing this and bringing us with you.
Thanks for all your hard work to make these videos possible better than anything on regular tv
Truly appreciate that Jim!
Great video, Jon! Terrific photography, as usual. Loved the footage of the pine marten! FWIW, I’ve seen several videos lately of people claiming to be camping at -30C that were clearly nowhere near that cold. As you point out, at -30 your hands start to hurt after very short exposure time, etc. Your authenticity shows! Oh, and I had a brief moment of envy when I saw all your firewood on the first night… there is nothing that can make a man feel richer than a big pile of firewood on a cold night!
Very much appreciated James! Hahah perfectly put!
I love winter's beauty! So peaceful in today's crazy world! Thanks for taking us along with you, Jon! Definitely looked like a pine marten.
Thanks so much Deb!
Nice enjoyment without borders. I'm looking at where you went through the snow ..it's hard for Moose .?? Hehehe ..All the best on everything as well as the wonderful video, stay safe buddy! Greetings from Alberta .👍🍁🌿🍷🍁👌
Hahaha I can't imagine being a moose in deep snow, but evidently they have it figured out. Thanks a lot TS!
@@LostLakes Hehehe ..just joking But is huge snow Ok..Hehehe..✌🌿🍁🍷👌
Nice vid as usual Jon. There is nothing, NOTHING like being out in the frozen wilderness. Your nighttime shots were great! I've spent nights out on the northern plains where there was no black in the sky, just stars. I thought pine marten, too. The hot tents, I think, could use clear vinyl windows with built in covers, like on pop top campers.
Much appreciated! And I totally agree, I wish our tent had a vinyl window...maybe a project for me
My first time viewing your channel and it was very enjoyable camping with you via CZcams 🙄 You have such a beautiful pleasant persona, and I love how much you respect nature and you even gave thanks for the fish 🥰👍🏾 Merry Christmas!🎄 Stay bless and safe
Thank you and Merry Christmas!
I appreciate you thanking the fish for its life to help you. Well done.
A trout fileted with an ice auger blade is ingenuity at its finest! Bravo Jon 👏
Hahah did the trick...thanks TGF!
Filleting a fish with an auger. Nice!
First for me, ideally a last 🙂
I can’t even express how you thanking the fish made me feel. I’ve been vegetarian for 7 years and the only meat I think I’d ever eat again would be via catching my own fish while camping. I could feel how much you appreciated it’s sacrifice and deeply respect the fish- so thank you for sharing that and being so genuine.
Really appreciate that 💚 And good on you for your choice. I increasingly feel the same and we buy less and less meat

Why is that vegetarians think that taking the life of plants is different from taking the life of animals? We need to consume life to live. Why do you judge one life type over another?
@@frankruff7114 Why do you care? It's his decision.
That is real Canadian winter scenery. The cloud of snow blowing across the lake. Fabulous!
That’s the first I’ve ever heard of a pine marten after I looked it up and saw the pictures it sure does look like one. Thank you Jon.
Thanks Cindy :) Thrilled to finally lay eyes on one!
Hello 👋 Cindy, how are you doing?
Howdy Jon, just having a coffee before I head out for lakers myself this morning and it was a treat to see an upload from you, a great way to start the day. After 50 years on ice in Northern Ontario, I have seen many spring holes etc.. with some incidents in almost all ice conditions. I always tell people no ice is 100 % safe ice despite it's thickness. That's a marten, I have trapped them for many years and only seen a couple live ones. You got lucky, nice capture. Depending on the size of that void in the logs it's hard to say what animal could be denned up, it could be anything from a skunk to a small bear. I have seen some yearling bears den up in some pretty small root tip ups. Was cutting wood off a pile of logs left behind by loggers one spring and I rousted one out from under the pile. Scared the shit outta me. Anyway, those lakers aren't going to catch themselves. You guys keep doing what ya do and stay safe. I look forward to the next episode and I'll yak at ya when I am older.
Hahaha I can only imagine your reaction. Many thanks for this Dunk! Hope you had a good day out there
These videos are terrific. The amount of work on post production too is impressive. I've been binge watching them for a few days straight getting over a cold. They came up on my playlist after I was watching an interesting video on a family surviving winter in Yakutia! I have to say, I get awfully peckish while watching tho...the food you make looks so good, and it's fun to watch you appreciating it too! 😂
Hahah thanks so much Claire!
Oh the peace and quiet sans snowmobile until...
You never would have seen the little critter at the end if you were on your sled. I think of all the years sledding all I have ever seen were tracks, deer and cat tracks. Great video John can't wait to see Erin make another trip.
So true Sue! Much appreciated and she'll be out with me again next weekend at last :)
Awesome to watch! So well done I didn't want it to end. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. I'm not sure if this would help you, but I built a smitty sled for pulling my ice fishing gear. It made pulling lots of gear almost effortless in the snow. I've never done the distances you do so it might not work, but I thought I would share. Safe travels!
Greatly appreciate that Pete! Been thinking about a smitty sled but tried some runners on the pulks this year instead...I think a smitty sled would make it a lot easier
Another amazing video, and fortunately in NH, USA we do not get the same temps your area gets. We are having an extremely unusual cold winter, thanks for making these videos. While I am warm in my living room comfortable. My cold weather camping days are over at 66, as I use to enjoy camping in any weather when I was younger.
Thanks so much Richard! It's been a cold one for sure
Love all of your videos...but these winter trips really make me wish I lived up north!
Thanks Jon
Thanks a lot Mark! Winter is extra long up here, but a lot more fun than when I live in the slush belt :)
Very good chance that the steam you saw under the logs is indeed a smouldering fire underground.
If it’s a recent forestry cut they likely burned their slash piles and just buried them. They’ll burn for months and months. I was working at a gold mine project in northern Ontario and the several of the piles they burnt early in winter (Dec/Jan) caused flare ups as late as June and July when they started the earthworks again.
With that said, another awesome video!
Thanks for this Matt! The odd thing was that the top logs appeared to have no signs of charring which leads me to think decomposition. Others are saying a bear den or water lol...total lack of consensus on this one
Loving these solo winter adventures! Thanks for sharing! Hoping for a new one coming up with this crazy weather system right now. Lots of snow!
Thanks for taking us with you. The lesson on the big dipper was great. And appreciating the fish was nice
Really appreciate that David!
Love the videos man, keep them coming. Going for a hike tomorrow with my son (10yo) for a hidden sledding spot at sandia peak, New Mexico. Low of -3f and a high of 21f.
Thanks a lot Steven! Sounds like a chilly one down there...great day to stay warm with a hike :)

Having lived in the northern most reaches of Wisconsin, where the thermometer read -35 many times, brings back chilly memories. Temps that low can be very scary. I do not miss it…
Never seen a fish cleaned with an ice auger before. The whole time you were doing it I was thinking about the time I cut my foot on a freshly sharpened auger blade. A plus for ingenuity Jon. I cleaned a 3 pound walleye with a pair of those little stubby scissors that come in a cheap first aid kit when I was working at Points North Landing in Northern Saskatchewan. You gotta use your imagination when you are in the bush sometimes and that's always been a fun part of it for me.
That looked so peaceful. Cold, yeah, but with the right gear, so nice to get out and explore, and thanks for taking us with you!
Wonderful as usual. Thanks, Jon.
Would you share with us the current ice conditions you encountered when your buddy went through? I usually use a 50% rule in Minnesota, but now I’m reconsidering that. I assume the ice will be 50% thinner in some spots than what has been reported or what I’ve found to be the “average” as I venture out. So I won’t go on foot until there are 6” of quality ice, figuring that in some places there would only be 3”.
Thanks so much Sean :) It was pretty similar to what I showed in this vid...maybe 6" of black ice on bottom, a foot of white ice and slush on top, then water and snow...so pretty terrible. That's a good guideline though
The steam coming from the cut down tree, maybe there is something hibernating under there or perhaps there is a pocket of decomposing Plant life that's giving off heat. That's got me curious.
I absolutely loved this watching this. The beauty of the surrounding the roar of the wood stove. The beauty of the night sky. It entrances me. I love how you always say thank you to your catches before you dispatch them. I would love to experience cold camping just once to say I have experienced it. Maybe one day. I did have to watch the part where you were gutting and preparing your fish from behind my hands 😱 Thank you Jon for sharing this. Thank you.
Me too...I'll see if I get a chance to investigate further :)
That cleaning did look pretty gory 😅 Truly appreciate that Helen!! 💚

Hey Jon, awesome video. I just wanted to know with temperature this could how do you ensure you’re car is still drivable once you end your trip. Are you not worried about a dead battery?
Same question here , I hope he has a booster pack in his car
At least he could always set up camp and stay warm😉
Thanks a lot Tanks shield! On the subsequent trip it was actually unresponsive in the cold...then somehow started. But I can always message Erin on the ZOLEO (sat comm) to meet me (usually I'm parked within 90 mins of where we live). And worst case, I'll keep hiking to keep my blood warm and head toward the most trafficked roadway around :)
Thought about it Sylvain...probably should :)
That countryside is so spectacularly beautiful with that show. And the shot of the stars created such a satisfying and relaxing mood for me. I’m way to old to be able to enjoy doing this anymore but what I’d give to be able to go back in time. Thanks for posting your vids.
Oh yeah it would add a few lbs of dead weight but you would get more rest at night…and stay warm longer…with a little larger fold down stove. More wood capacity would give you longer burn time….and more heat.
Steam from either piles of sawdust composting or geothermal activity are most likely.
Better to have a pocket knife and not need it, than not have a pocket knife and need it. Wouldn't you say?
Y'all are starting to convince me! :)
Another great video. Always appreciate the experiences that you let us be a part of. Love that drone footage by the way, something about drone footage over a frozen landscape hits different.
Much appreciated! Amazing what an entry-level drone can do these days
Looked like a pine martin. What a great sighting! Snow on the trees & stars at night were beautiful. Lots of work keeping warm in those frigid temps, but looked enjoyable. Thanks for sharing. Take care and stay safe
Thanks a lot Judy! Thrilled to finally see one
Steam could be caused by compost breaking down (chemical reaction). People heat their greenhouses with this method.
A small razor blade works as a back-up knife.
Pretty amazing how it can overcome that cold
Love the shots of the snowy forest. After a fresh snowfall I love taking my daughter out for a hike in the woods under the snowy canopy. Thanks for the video.
Also, if you're still having back trouble, might I suggest you look into the correlation between joint pain/inflamation and high carb diet. It's made a huge difference me.
Thanks for this ET! Snowy boughs sure bring out the magic out there
That was awesome. I just started watching your videos and I am enjoying them very much. Besides that I like how you expose nature and I love your humbleness. I watch some guys that are too arrogant for me. Keep up the good work. You are really creating something special in my heart. I live in Florida now but I used to live in New York and ski. So I miss the snow. Thank you for your videos. I never camp but your videos are helping me to get there.
Hey young fella, old man from Alaska here…….this takes me way back to the late fifties/ early sixties hunting and camping 😎🥶
Love the night sky footage. So amazing. I can’t wait to get back to our Canada fishing trip this summer.
Another great thing about winter...dark nights :) Counting down the days myself
It’s so pretty and dangerous at the same time. I really like these hot tent camping videos. This is my first video of yours but so far I’ll be watching more of them.❤
I have had similar experiences with ice buddy. Late January go from 2-3ft of ice to 2 inches! Maybe some current? A rock or structure? Water chemistry? who knows…but always be prepared. I bring a floating throw rope and a peg as well. An auger multi tool 🤣 That’s a first! Thanks for sharing Jon😀
You most likely found a bear den. They are known to burrow under slash piles. - And, ha I was wondering what mangled that trout in your thumbnail. Gotta do what you gotta do! Yes, 100% American marten. (aka pine marten).
Well that's interesting...!! Hahaha I figured I'd lose some cred on my fish cleaning abilities with that thumb 😆
@@LostLakes It had me wondering what happened.
It's possible there's some saw dust or mulch composting down under the logs generating the heat !
Very cool, so to speak. The cups of hot water, wow.
Great adventure. I really liked the ice cloud you created. Your photography and editing are excellent, that's a whole other skill set apart from the cold weather camping and survival. Cheers. :)
Greatly appreciate that Allan!
Another amazing trip. The bush looks spectacular with all that snow. Cozy tent set up too. Thx
My grandpa used to put undersized trout in his thermos, bring them home and cook them in the smoker 😆. The best brook trout I ever ate ❣️.
That transition from the constellation to the melting candle was sickkk. Very nice 👌
I just love that you thank the fish that you can eat him. Me as a hobby fisherman do this too.

I've lived in mt my whole life and I've seen Temps of -30s and 40s but I can't even imagine camping in it. Your tolerance to cold is something else!
I worked on oil rigs in North Dakota and it got -50, I’m from Texas so I don’t do well in the cold. Was gonna quit and go home till my boss took me ice fishing on Lake Sacagawea and I was HOOKED !!!!!!
Great video!! I’m originally from Manitouwadge, we used to camp at that lake all the time when I was a kid. My son and I head up there a few times a year and make sure to visit that lake for a few days of fishing!! Keep up the good work!!
You are correct, that was a pine marten you saw on your walk out.
Thanks a lot Ed!! So much fun to be had around Mani :)
First time watching your video and I loved every minute of it. It was so authentic and awe inspiring - thanks for sharing your experience with us 🤗
Really appreciate that LM!
Brutal conditions. Lots of quiet except for wind. Glad I am inside in my easy chair. Slept few nights at minus 20 F but a long time ago
Another fantastic video, as always. I really admire your dedication to getting out there in winter. I'm afraid that I'm not quite so hard-core lol
Hahah thanks a lot Tracy!
Since the dawn of humanity man has wanted a sharp edge in their pocket. Bold choice for a couple of ounces. Thanks for taking us along.
I still have the patch from the spot a pine martin bit my sleeping pad a decade ago in Algonquin park on an early winter cold camping trip. Always be prepared and bring a patch kit!
LOL crazy!
Grampy used to say firewood is s the only thing that warms you twice. First cutting second when burning.

Hahah thanks a lot Matt :)
