Jerk Chicken, Fried Rice & Fine Dining: Chef's Night Out in NYC with Spur Tree

When Spur Tree owner Sean John told us that he was going to bring his 60-year-old head chef Victor-who has never come out with him before, and almost never drinks-for his New York-based episode of Chef's Night Out, we knew we were in for an interesting night.
Our first stop is uptown, to treat Victor to some fine dining at Beautique. There, the guys down piña coladas and trout before heading to Chinatown's Fung Tu for brisket fried rice and vegetable dumplings. We then head a few blocks down the street to The Grey Lady for vodka and oyster shooters. The night wraps up around the corner, back at Spur Tree, where Sean and Victor cook up an off-menu feast for friends who are partying in a loft above the restaurant.

I find a lot of Caribbean/West Indian men of the elder generation are like that. Quiet, don't like to go out too much, don't like to talk about themselves too much, have simple tastes and all that.
I concur...I am Panamanian (From Panama in Central America) with Jamaican ancestry and that is how the older folks mannerisms are. They prepare everything from scratch, eat super healthy...no fast food, very stern and serious. they just command respect with just their disposition. The younger generation should understand what modesty means.

You know, in my opinion, it's good and bad. I love and am very proud of my Caribbean heritage, and I do admire a lot of these qualities about my grandfathers (hard working, humble, quiet, content with the little things in life), but I do see issues as well. For me, just being quiet all the time and not speaking is unthinkable. Or being super picky about everything isn't my style either.
So there's good and bad. But you're right, it is something to be admired.

First Generation Canadian here with two very Jamaican parents and my dad is JUST like Victor, especially that picky eater shit - it came come off rude which is not their intention at all. I dunno, nuff respect for Victor going outside of his comfort zone, just wish my dad would try that as well.

The vibe was great, my favorite munchies ep. It's crazy how you can feel someones warmth from a video. He's the coolest guy yet on munchies everyone else was to much for some reason.

I went Friday night (1/2) and the food was good AFl!!! Everything that I hoped for and more! I got the Coconut Kingfish, Curry Goat, and Fried Plantains.
It was all good, can't wait to go back!

Never eaten at this guy's restaurant, and I'm sure he's an amazing chef but, in my experience in London at least, the best Jamaican, Caribbean restaurants are the ones that white hipsters are a bit scared to go to. Not white people, just white hipsters.
