  • The new Media Player in Windows 11 now has the ability to rip music CDs which it didn't have when it first came out. Now you can use the built software to rip your CDs but you only have the option to create AAC, FAC, FLAC, ALAC now MP3 files with a recent update. You can also still use the original legacy Windows Media Player in Windows to RIP CDs if needed for now.
You can read the writeup of the process on our website.

NOTICE: The mp3 format has now been added, as of September of 2023. I'm still disappointed the format of WAV is still not available, though. Microsoft clearly wants people to use FLAC, because FLAC is both "Lossless" and "Compressed," whereas WAV is just "Lossless." But, WAV is used in far more players, so there may be a need for some people to use WAV. I really think Microsoft should add the WAV format.

I am unable to find a way to rip a CD in Windows 11 using the new Media Player, that used to be Groove. I don't see any tabs for Rip CD. However, I was able to load the CD in my drive, go to File Explorer and right-click the CD then select Play. This opened up the old Windows Media Player (Legacy). I didn't find a menu but I pressed CTL-M and the old interface opened up. Unlike the one that is in Windows 7 (which cannot connect to the music DB) this version resolves the album information.

Its hard to say what the problem could be without seeing it but I know the rip option won't show up unless you have a CD in the drive. You can try this software as an alternative in Windows 11.

@@OnlineComputerTips I see the problem. In the old Windows Media Player the rip function is on the same page as the music library, which was the default page when the app opened. Now, rip is on a different selection (in the left side column) but the app still defaults to the music library and, like you said, the CD icon appears only if there is a CD in the drive. Thanks for your help and video 🙂

Thank you very much for this.
I hardly even use W11 unless I service a machine running it -- mainly because, despite a couple of years to refine it, W10 remains superior in every way. Some people ask me to change their W11 machines to W10.
Recently the W11 Media Player turned up on one of my W10 machines and deleted WMP 12.
The W11 Media program seems less untidy than WMP but does less and gives an air of indifference on the part of Microsoft. Gone are the days of laptop and desktop 'media centers' using earlier iterations of WMP as M'soft became ever more business orientated and swerved away from both enjoyment and education.
This disdain will cause the steep decline of Windows use to worsen, while Apple improves its sonics even on very small devices. Some Linux distros also serve music and video well and they are mostly free.
Lately I serviced a 2 year old Surface Pro and happened to have a new one for a customer to hand. The disdain for sound is worsening despite the ludicrous prices now being demanded just to open a hatch and replace the SSD. I have subscribed and look forward to seeing your other work.

Great! Except that I can't actually set where the file rips to. You can add a location of media files but it won't rip to that location! What??? I had to do a search of the main drive to find out where it ripped to. It's like they assigned some college intern to design this. Mine does allow MP3. It is obvious there are many iterations to this "app", none of which is an improvement from what I had on previous versions of windows.

@@OnlineComputerTips I spent more time than was reasonable trying to make sense of this Media Player. It was rubbish before and it's rubbish now, you'd think after all this time and having all those technicians Microsoft would have got it right by now. Same for the ubiquitous Windows Ink, which was surely designed to harass Photoshop users. To sort the CD ripping I downloaded EZ CD and got the job done effortlessly, to sort Windows Ink I disabled it as I do with all new Windows installations. Have to say, I'm finding Windows 11 far less user friendly than its predecessors. No surprise there!

As if you were speaking to someone’s mother. My old sister has my father’s voice on tape and we would love to share it with all our siblings.
PS: And that new info about Flac and Wav is even more confusing!
