Hey love, thank you for breaking down how they consider you eligible for the program. I am currently taking prerequisites right now but I’m undecided on what sonography path to take as in general, cardio, or vascular, the school I’m attending has 3 sonography programs to choose from but my main focus right now is passing all of my classes. I’m a Medical Assistant in Surgery so I’m familiar with everything in the hospital setting, I already have my CPR/BLS since it’s mandatory for us to have it. This video is very helpful I’m just getting started, I reside here in Florida (North Florida)

Yeah, Ohio is a lot different to get into sonography, I just had to pass a couple tests in reading and math, be a high school graduate, and score high. I'm so excited though, I start May 11th. Graduate from Stautenzenberger within 19 months with Associates. thankyou though I was looking around for additional advice on what to study in advance . I've been trying to study in all my spare time.
Congrats on your acceptance ! You could probably buy some of the textbooks for your classes and read ahead before your program starts. My classmates and I did this before starting and it helps by becoming a little familiar before the teacher gives us a bunch of information at once. The more familiar you are with some of the info, the more comfortable and less flustered you may feel. All the best !
Hi, so i'm a junior in high school and i'm in a nursing program but i don;t really like it and so i'm looking into different types of careers and stuff and sonography sound pretty cool. And i also live in ohio but i'm still not sure what i want to do. So, do you like sonography? ( i know you commented a year ago but yk) or if you left sonography, why? in wv, well the school im going to the prereqs are anatomy, physiology, med term, physics, math concepts and applications and then the basic requirements for marshall university.

I'm really in the fence about what is that i want to do in the Healthcare field. I have taken a boat load of prerequisites and earned a AA NOT an AS idk if it will be worth even trying to apply to any school once they see that. Should I go for it?

so i’m confused right now ! I live in Arizona and at my community college there’s no DMS programs so i was looking into obviously transferring to TX but the majority of texas programs states that you need a AAS degree and the pre reqs before applying to the program , the only AAS degree here is the RAD TECH program and i really want to go straight towards DMS rather than radiology ): i really need insight/ help
Some programs do require an Associates degree usually in xray before enrolling in the DMS program but not all and many schools are removing that requirement. I would suggest looking at other states if you want to go straight to dms without the rad tech degree because it's definitely possible so keep searching.
For my program most of the students had degrees- AS/BS/MS but they still accepted someone from high school who had completed the prereqs with great grades. It's harder to get in without a degree for sure because preference is given to students with a stronger academic background. So keep that in mind for sure when continuing your search for programs.

I’m a senior in HS, planning to start the sonography program in spring of 2023. I’ve started taking online practice courses in anatomy and basic terminology flashcards :)
Any recommendations for how to teach yourself how to understand normal sonographic images, like books or websites?

Hi! Thank you for information! Do you have OB/GYN? Should you chose which area are you going to, could you have all three major areas during 24 months like Echo, OB/GYN, and General?
Hi! Yes my program did all three specialties in the 2 years. So all three are mandatory once enrolled. First year was abdomen and obgyn then the second year was strictly echo. Most programs offer a combination of the specialties like general and echo while some offer one or the other. Also there are programs that offer all of them but separately -- and thats when you would pick which specialty you are interested in when applying.
@Aqsa Faheem no you don't pick one to major in. You study whatever program you apply for. Depending on your program structure, if they offer all then you do all of them throughout the program. Then for your board exams you can decide which certifications you want in order to work.
For example my program offered three specialties : abdomen, obgyn and echo. I learned all of them then decided to take abdomen and echo only but i am still eligible to get certified in obgyn if i wanted.
Can you work fulltime or part-time during school?
Is it really time consuming like hat say because I watched a video and she scared me when she told me that it was really time consuming to the point where you don’t eat or sleep or use the bathroom or work
hey, i’m a little confused about the classes before you got in the program (sorry) but how long did it take to complete those? i know the sonography program was 2 years, but were the pre reqs long? i’m gonna go to a community college for sonography and they need certain requirements, but idk how to do it? since it’s a community college, do i need to first apply for the pre reqs then apply for the sonography program after? or is it like altogether? ughh sorry i’m terrible at explaining and im sooo nervous to go into sonography! i really don’t wanna take long in school for this...
Hey, i started my prereqs while I was completing my bachelors degree so it was spread out over those 4 years but you can take them at any pace you would like. If you are only focused on those prereqs without other classes, it shouldn't take more than a year with summer classes included. (thats assuming you take at least 3-4 classes per semester)
I would say apply when you are done with all the prereqs or at least enrolled in the last few prereqs. If they know you are about to complete certain classes they may still consider you and then finalize their decision once you submit your transcript with a passing grade in all the required prereqs. ( some schools ) To be safe, have them done before applying because that's how most programs are. But for sure the prereqs come before you apply to the program, its not together so definitely get started with that.
If you don't want to take too long you could apply for programs with just general or just echo as those are not exactly 2 years, because if you haven't started your prereqs as yet, thats approximately 2.5-3 years total for you (prereqs + the sono program). Time will fly though so don't be nervous !

Yes I did. That's awesome, goodluck ! The program was good, time flies really fast so soak up as much information as you can during your time.
What do you have a bachelor’s degree in? Why did u decide to go a different route from what u received your bachelor’s in?
I got my degree in environmental science with a premed track. I had second thoughts about that path at the time but knew I wanted to remain in the health field so thats when I found ultrasound.
Hi Ashley, I hope you are well. I just wanted to know that when you applied for sonography were you straight out of high school or after high school you looked for a college to do pre-requirements and the finally applied for sonography?
Hi I went to college and got my bachelors first then decided to do sonography but you don't need to get a bachelors first.I was a career changer that's why that happened. You can apply to an associates/bachelors program in sonography - any is good. For the prerequisites you can for sure enroll in any college/community college after high school to take those courses then apply to a sonography program after. Key is to have those prerequisites taken at a college before applying to the program of your choice

So i have applied to my community college echocardiography program for an associates degree in sonography. Like do i go straight to the program or do i have to take classes in community college then go to the program?? And if so then why the heck did they allow me to select the program....ugh I'm confusion

Every school is a little different but for my college, once I applied and got accepted then I was straight in the program. I had to take courses before applying to complete my application. After that, once I was in, I took all courses that concentrated solely on sonography.
If your school website says you need certain classes before the program, definitely take them prior to applying so the admissions department can see a completed application. Your school probably allowed you to select it as a pre-sonography option because sonography programs are limited access so not everyone can select it and then they are in automatically. I would contact an academic advisor to be safe.
First, THANK YOU SO MUCH for this info. Second, I already have a bachelor's degree. Do I apply for certificate programs or associates degree programs? I've done so much research and I can't seem to find an actual answer. Or does it not matter? I only want 2 years or less for more schooling lol
Hi Cierra, it depends on what you want. Some programs have a certificate because it just has either general/vascular/echo or one modality of ultrasound which takes like a year vs having multiple modalities which would be an associates/bachelors degree (2-4 yrs).
Not all the programs have a combination of specialities so look out for that. The more the program offers the longer they typically take. Certificate programs are usually shorter because they do one or two specialties.

@@cierrapowell4590 Hey! No I did not go through with the program. I am now looking into Radiologic Tech. If you are still interested in Sonography go for it! Start researching accredited schools and see when you can get started!

Hi yes some ultrasound programs require the TEAS but my school never needed that so I got in without it.
I'm only 15 and still planning but.... Will this be worth it? I heard alot of sonologist enjoy their jobs but idk if I can do it 😭
so ultrasound physics isnt equations right? it wont be like the physics in the pre requisites? ultrasound physics is more like instruments and definitions right

Yes for sure. I had most of the prereqs with my bachelors but I took a few after completing the degree. As long as you have those prereqs you can apply.
Check the school you are interested in though because some of them want at least an associates degree or a health science degree and if not, it still makes you more competitive for these programs.

Yes it's very confusing how these programs lay out their requirements. For my program we just needed the prereqs to get in, however they made note that having an associates/bachelors etc would give more points toward our application which would increase our chances of getting in.
I think most schools are like this even if they don't say it but you can still try and apply if they don't state the degree as a requirement. Just keep in mind it might be harder to get in. I would call the office to clarify if its needed first so you don't waste your time applying when they require any degree first.
Most of the students in my class had previous degrees because my program was very competitive and I believe they still accepted one person straight from high school but she got really good grades in all the prereqs. So basically make yourself as competitive as possible (shadowing, getting all A's in the prereqs etc) if you are not getting an associates first.
The school that I’m planning on attending is diagnostic sonography. But I wanted to specialize in either pediatric or neuro. How do I do that? Is it after I finish or?
Yes that would be after finishing the program. You will still learn everything though. When applying for jobs you would apply for a children's hospital for example. Children's hospitals are also the ones with a lot of neuro and you will learn that on the job and throughout your clinicals depending on which locations your coordinator places you.
I will be applying to Palm Beach state college in 2020 . I have all my prequisites done. I have a bachelor's degree. Any suggestions, and ideas about the school? I will be moving from Tennessee to Florida to attend the school.
I'm not familiar with the details on that program. But just remember that every school is different and they may change their requirements each year so definitely keep checking the school's website that you are interested in for updated information. I know its a lot to take in but don't worry! I would recommend looking at the schools website that you are interested in to find out the exact prereqs then take them at your own pace. Once you have all the requirements you can apply for a program and they will guide you through everything. The main thing to focus on before the program is completing those prereqs and try to get your GPA as high as possible to make yourself competitive.

Yes you can for sure! Look for schools that offer the program because you definitely don't need to go to a community college. In south florida for example Nova Southeastern University offers a bachelors degree in sonography.
Because of the global events going on, my school has decided to NOT require the TEAS test. Do you think making a good grade on it will give me a leg up over people with better GPAs?
I think it possibly could help depending on how much weight your program puts on each component of the application. Some programs look more heavily at gpa vs teas and vice versa or some have it 50:50; so if your gpa isn't very high but you score high on the teas that could balance out your application and still make you a strong applicant.
@@morganashley3420 Thank you for responding. I emailed a program director at my college, and discovered the average TEAS test score for accepted applicants is 30??? Is this common? I even reasked the director since the scale is 0-100, and they confirmed 30 is the average score of accepted applicants :o

Is it smart to apply to more than one ultrasound program once done with pre reqs?
Yes, definitely apply to more than one program if you are able, because then you can always have backups if things don't work out with one school vs another.
diagnostic medical sonography vs cardiovascular sonography ??
RDMS is general ultrasound : abdomen, obgyn, musculoskeletal and RDCS is for cardiac and this is solely ultrasound of the heart. RVT is a separate credential for vascular studies. If you want to do a wide array of studies then DMS is good, but if you want to focus on the heart and vessels then cardiovascular would be suitable as cardiac and vascular labs are usually joined in the hospitals.
So can I attend my local community college & finish with an associates in sonography & get straight to applying for jobs? Or do I have to take extra steps after that ?
Yes you can apply after an associates. Most sonography programs are associates you don't need a bachelors. Then you just need to pass your certification exams and you can apply for jobs.
Can you join a program straight out of high school?
Some programs allow you to start as long as you have the prereqs but others require at least an associates degree so definitely check out the details on the programs you are interested in

Hi Can I ask, For example I completed my pre reqs and all and applied to an Associate degree of Sonography and graduate. But after a year or so I wanted to upgrade my degree, so can I continue my Associate degree and upgrade it to bachelors???

Hi are you talking about finishing the sonography associates then getting a different bachelors afterward or do you mean transferring from an associates in sonography (before you completed the associates) to a bachelors in sonography through a different program?
Transferring midway is difficult because most bachelors programs require that you start with them from the beginning. They have specific courses and a certain sequence so accepting students from other programs messes with the flow and can also confuse students so many schools don't allow it. You would most likely have to apply and start from the beginning although you have taken a few ultrasound courses already. Not saying it's not possible though ! Depends on the program
Morgan Ashley Lets say, I graduated associate in Sonography (which is 2 yrs) and took a year-gap and then apply to a bachelors in Sonography also in the same univ that I took my associates (which is 2 yrs also) bcs I already took a 2 yrs program from the start and just took a year gap.
Can’t I just continue my associates to bachelors? Or do I still need to take a 4 yr program even if I already got my 2 yrs associate degree?

Hello, I have a 2.9 GPA do u think I can get into a program, all the programs I see where I’m at are a 3.0 and up! And can u suggest anything that will make my chances higher of getting in, my only downfall is I’m bad at math.

Hi Alyssa. I would suggest probably taking some general ed courses although your program offers it along with the sequence. However, most programs want those prereqs prior to admission and that would give you a chance to increase your gpa.You could still get in but if your program is very competitive, its best to have the required GPA or even higher to increase your chances. If not you could probably get some shadowing hours in but check with your schools academic advisor to see if there is anything you can do because all schools are very different.

I was wondering if I would be a good idea to get a basic certificate in mammogramphy before starting a sonogram program?
If you want to do mammo and ultrasound then sure ! but they are not related - one is x ray and the other is sound waves so don't do it just to get into ultrasound because you can get into ultrasound without it.

you don't have to volunteer/ shadow a sonographer but if your program is really competitive, that could help set you a part depending on your school

Depends on the specific program you're trying for but here's the classes I had to take/ am taking.
-BIO1 and BIO2
-CHEM1 and CHEM2
-Intro to Psychology
-Statistics and College Algebra and possibly Calculus
-Medical Terminology
-Physics
-Communications/ research as well
What I did, to put it simply. First figure out what college in your area has an accredited DMS program, then lookup the required prerequisites courses because each program may have slightly different courses required. It's confusing until you research more, hope this helps!

Yes you need prerequisite courses before applying. They are basically classes that each program requires to make sure you have a good understanding of core subjects before you start the more advanced and focused ultrasound courses. Examples are college algebra, general physics, anatomy and physiology, english 101 etc.
Each programs prereqs vary so check out different programs you are interested in and look what they require to know which classes you need before applying.

@@hannahgarcia3914 Yes just the classes. However having an associates degree will make you more competitive. My program gave preference to students with a health science degree for example. It's not a requirement but talk to an advisor and ask how to improve your chances of getting in. Shadowing a sonographer etc.

usually the site can be up to 100 miles away ( California ) and you have to have your own transport or carpool with a buddy

A degree in sonography is either an associates or bachelor's so you'll most likely only need the prerequisites. Depends on what school you're applying to, so check their website.

The physics isn't like what we are used to high school or college. Its ultrasound physics which is basically learning the machine and how images are displayed. Go for it if you are confident about ultrasound and don't let that stop you because its not bad at all. Stay on top of your studying and you will be fine.
My state only has ONE program.... I might need to go out of state. 😪
I can say all the requirements you just said for Florida school, its the same in texas and California. I did my research on texas where i used to live and California where im currently living at

my program did not have an interview portion; but they could ask you things like why you chose ultrasound, what steps have you been taking to prepare yourself for a career in the field.. teamwork questions because of the hospital/ clinic dynamic & questions along those lines.

Hello! I’ve been watching tons of videos for the DMS program. I just finished all my prerequisites in Washington State and I am getting ready to apply. My program does points and I am at about 24/28 points possible. My biggest worry is about how much I should’ve retained from the anatomy classes that were required. Will I be getting like a refresh in the program? I feel like I don’t remember everything from these prerequisites!
You will definitely get a refresh! They just want those courses so we have a basic understanding of the anatomy of the body so don't worry about that. You will basically relearn the anatomy of the body from an ultrasound perspective along with different pathologies.
