I remember it's early 2018. I see this video for the first time ever. I had very limited knowledge of Half Life at the time and that bit where you throw a nade at Alyx at the sniper rifle and a combine soldier pops up. This intrigued me cuz I was like "What the shit? I thought she sticked with you until the end. How can that be if she gets replaced with a combine soldier and you take your revenge?" So I look up the ending of Ep.2, and there she is, I obviously get spoiled of Eli's death (but I mean which modern HL fan hasn't) and she sure as hell looks just like she's supposed to." I say to myself.
So I knew I had to play the games from the start and learn it by myself rather than watching it from CZcams. I start, not from HL1, but from HL2. I thought HL1 was too dated and generally knew what happened. Big explosion happens, aliens start coming in, some guy in business suit takes you blah blah blah, it all gets retconned later anyways.
So I boot up HL2. I finish it in like 13 hours. I actually really like it until the Nova Prospekt, I know this is a hot take but beyond that point I think HL2 is just a slog to play through, up until the very last chapter with the charged gravity gun. I am aware that the game looks really old but I can look past it, it came out in 2004 after all. So I finish it and I'm like "That was not so bad I mean it turned out better than I expected from a 2004 game." So I continue with the sequels. I play Episode 1, I finish it and I go "Well, that was fantastic." Because it was. I think the episodes are really overlooked, especially Ep.1.
Anyways I boot up Ep.2. I play until the sniper sequence and we meet up with Alyx and I'm fishy of her, at that point I'm thinking that a bunch of combines captured them or something and left two combine soldiers with some kind of alien disguising device to make sure they look identical to them. Obviously as I'm driving around I keep waiting for the betrayal sequence and us recapturing Alyx. It obviously never happens and as I realize that her personality and shit is pretty much the same since we left her, I start to theorize shit like how she's been a combine disguised as a human for years and she's waiting just the right moment to strike.
I reach the game's ending, and say to myself that the plot point was probably reserved for HL3 which obviously never came out and disclose the "combine corpse coming out of Alyx" as an easter egg for the curious fans.
five and a half years pass, I've obviously forgotten the theory and as I'm rewatching this video I'm reminded of all the memories and I just say to myself "Well shit I guess what Valve did was just put a combine sniper entity there and adjust the AI to not shoot the player, I'm fricking dumb"
So to finish off I guess thank you for making me a HL fan. I hope you see this

I agree with you on hl2, it's kinda the slowest longest most tiring one. I never even finished the game once until many years later when people were watching my videos and I felt like it was worth seeing if I could get any more footage (the Breen video lol)

I have found a plot hole in this video. The first place to find the RPG is in the second radar cache in the chapter ‘Under the Radar’. This is where the plot hole lies - when Mr DeSinc shoots the Combine Sniper posing as Alyx with the RPG, it takes place in the chapter ‘Freeman Pontifex’ which is before the chapter ‘Under the Radar’, meaning there was no possible way for Mr DeSinc to obtain a RPG in the game world.

The one that's causing the pickaxe to go all weird in that level isn't really the pickaxe itself but rather the elevator. Put something else in the elevator when its still on the ground level and activate it. Once the elevator is on the top, any physics object would have the same quirk as the pickaxe.

DeSinc well I couldn’t use it as a cannon in the vents, but I did manage to skip the entire zombie section and break the game from that pickaxe.

I know this is unrelated to the video, sorry DeSinc. Coming back to watch this every few years really brings me back good memories. I was 8 years old when my dad bought me a copy of Half-Life 2 Episode 2 in 2007. Still shocked it has been that long. So many phases of life can pass you by in 15 years. I’ve met very few people who had the same relationship with these games, TF2, Portal and CSS. I’d even met several folks who passed away thinking we’d get to see a sequel one day.
Even after thousands of clickbait thumbnails, fanmade trailers, the 240p fan tributes sinc’d to Linkin Park and all the ongoing support spanning 20+ years, it felt like Half Life Alyx was a little slap in the face. It was a new half life game, but it was made exclusively for VR, and while it was exciting to see a new title, it felt a little like filler to wipe away any expectations we still had of a sequel. It was a smart move, and it seemed like an easy one any company would make to cash in on the VR scene.
I think our nostalgia for the franchise is what kept me from avoiding that game. Instead of announcing they wouldn’t be continuing the series, they’d kept us in the dark for over ten years instead of being forthcoming about it. I believe this has been due to the amount of overwhelming pressure and rising expectations.
Sorry to be critical. For all those memories, the friends I’d met because of Valve, they are no longer the same company we knew. Valve, like any other developer has changed - and time is a reflection of that. I just think it sucks that I’m the only one who sees they’ve taken advantage of our nostalgia for the games, and because of that clingyness we have for Valve, it’s hard to let go or come to terms with it.
No, you're not the only one that's noticed all of this. I've lost so much faith in valve, especially after half life alyx was yet another linear single player experience with the typical un-funning treatment that portal 2 received. Can't explain what they did to it exactly but it's just bland. Just like old blizzard, old valve seems to no longer exist. I agree with everything you said. It was so weird to see you randomly show up and say all of that but I'm glad you did.
Then again I would like to offer my own perspective. I would posit that valve never made great games in the first place. Half life and have life 2 were both actually boring games in my opinion. In fact before my channel became popular I hadn't even finished half life 1 or 2 even once in my life. The only half life games I'd finished playing from start to finish were episodes one and two. The first source game I played was Garry's mod. The second was Counter strike source. To date I have 10,000 hours between the two, likely more.

Thought I'd throw a small potato into a potato sack with thousands of potatoes and their little potato families, and someone finding my potato would be a 1 in 1000 chance. Now I realize I was the potato all along. We were all just Valve's potatoes from the start. I'm really hungry now.
Coming back to these games leaves a strange feeling, like going to see an old friend, but now that friend has been arrested for selling anime, which is of course the worst offense of all. So to seek closure you go to visit his hot mom, but it turns out his mom has been diagnosed with a terminal illness, half-life syndrome. Highly contagious and is known to infect by word of mouth. Now your only connection with that friend is through another's experience. You can finally reflect on those memories you share in common, and for a moment it's gleeful but quickly fades. Now after moving on, you can see not everything was as great as it seemed. My metaphor game is terrible. I think I'm trying to say, the only reason I go back to these games is because of the memories associated with them.
If not for the community that's kept it all together, these speedrun videos, and the simplicity of Valve's games, I think they would have faded into obscurity long ago. When you can step back after years and see games for how they are, these are really just simple for most players - which has worked well in Valve's favor. Today Half-Life and Portal are just a modding platform. Garry's Mod was a good example to start. Since 2009, I have more hours in that game than any source game! If not for one of my favorite developers, we wouldn't have such hit classics, like SchoolShooter roleplay and PonyRP. Truly, they could've had us.
But CS:S, Team Fortress, Left 4 Dead and all of these games were only special to me because of friendships we forged from them. That's the point behind this video-essays-worth of a comment. It's probably not necessary, I know most folk don't want to read that much, but i've been holding this in for years and felt it was necessary to explain where I was coming from. It might be better than a "this game sucky sucky" comment. Even if no one agreed or it got overlooked, at least I can get it off my chest. :)

I agree that they are boring games, but I do like the middle stretches quite a bit. It's the beginning and end parts of Valve games that tend to suck, which makes them hard to revisit.

Raid city 17 on level 1 in halflife by giving yourself weapons. Then turn on noclip when you get out of the train and just explore the level. I found that when you get off the train, and go into noclip, look around for a box outside of the map where Brean is, then kill him. Game over. He prob won't see this but I just want one more half life 2 vid ;((

Was messing around at the bridge part, and figured out that if you stay on the top of the side railings, you can jump down onto the grass and initiate the sequence normally. Allowed me to skip the whole part below, though I didn't use the pickaxe, I just stacked boxes to get over the side building towards gman. Thanks for making my gnome run easier :)

honestly, I got it first try but I had to re-film it with enemies in the shot cause it was funnier, and that took me about 60 tries from memory

From experience, its a lot easier without the enemies, but even then without a way to instantly spin yourself 180 degrees with the push of a button, it took me at least 30-40 tries. Without antlions screwing up the pallet
