For aviation certification back in the 80’s I had to certify with a five cluster joint. Oxy/acet weld only.
Dang that sound like some fun. Thanks for watching
@@SuperformanceFab run the key hole
Gas *does* work on 4130.
Made my first valve spring compressor of 4130 tubing. Welded with Gas.
@@dennisyoung4631 of course it does. That is all they had for many years
A&P Tech classes is exactly how I became hooked on playing in the puddle and manipulating my welds. Hand eye coordination 101. All of the guys in my welding block were blowing holes in their material and so forth and now I’m so thankful for the information and instruction Mr Moffit provides for TIG just a different source of heat really
Jeff, you do a GREAT job explaining and teaching the welding process, keep up the GREAT work!!
Thank man very much appreciated, thanks for watching
Definitely need to save this one! A lot of people say regardless of thickness ALWAYS pre-heat Chromoly. Glad to know .120 and thinner does not require pre-heat. If I heard correctly
Great vid a friend of mine asked me to weld a chromoly bike for him this helps a lot thank you
Perfect timing, glad it will be helpful to you. Thanks for watching
How’d-it go ? I have this cracked aftermarket frame that I’ve been trying to weld.
@@steviec8697 it went good I prolly shoulda pre heated to about 250 but I didn’t and got a little crappy hot start
Always when I see Jeff on screen I take a notepad.
Thats awesome man thanks for watching
Clear and concise! Great job!! Do more please!! Thx
Thanks man always trying to progress my skills being on screen, im getting better at it i feel for sure. Thanks for watching
some great information there Jeff, great to see you on CZcams....love your videos....cheers
Thanks for all the kind words and your support Paul
@@SuperformanceFab always Jeff
I really enjoyed this and got a lot out of it.
Thanks for watching glad i could help.
Thanks, Jeff! I have not done any tig work, so loads to learn before I decide to try it.
Just get at it man. You will have fun learning, dont be scared be confident and always try to progress and test yourself and just make sure your loose and havin fun thanks for watching
I suggest you to use a laser welding machine, it is very simple, beginners can learn in ten minutes.
Great video Jeff, definitely learned a few things!
Thanks man much appreciated and thanks for watching
That was great ! Thanks so much for that information, much appreciated.
Thanks for watching and reaching out very much appreciated man.
Great segment! I learned a lot!
Great job Jeff!
Thanks man very much appreciated. Thanks for watching
Love it! This is a great video!
You truly are so gifted. Would love to see some Ti/Inconel Exhaust Tubing Tips sometime. I know you've done them in the past, but it really is so interesting. Maybe some Pie Cut stuff?
I really appreciate that man its super fun stuff to work with i love it. And im going to be doing some more Ti soon so stay tuned. Thanks for watching and reaching out.
Like a lot of this you tube welding videos . It’s easy to weld joists right in front of you ,no other tubes obstructing your view. Beginner’s need to see that so they know sometimes a weld has to be contortionist
Yeah man its best to practice as much as you can so that you become so proficient with it when you get into those out of bench positions welds and have to become a contortionist and it makes it easier to make that weld and you dont even have to think about it. And when you get into those positions nothing else matters but that puddle. I plan on doing a 8.50 cert cage soon and plan on talking about all these points. Thanks for watching and reaching out.
Good job!! Perfect for a beginner like me!
Great video. I have a question? Can you mig weld chromoly with straight argon? Or does it have to be with tig? Thanks
Well presented. Nice work.
Thanks man very much appreciated and thanks for watching
love those green arc shots
Thanks Jeff. Nice weld buddy!
Cool. Nice explanation.
Thanks Jeff
Thanks for watching man
Thank you.. since we are sharing information... You should rotate the regulator's valve "all the way open" to engage the 2nd O-ring seal. There is one at both open & closed positions. And was that tank "free standing"? Say it ain't so!! Gotcha (maybe:). You RoCk. Cheers
Thanks for this video man 👍
Thanks for watching
excelente video¡ saludos
Thank you,
Good point on venting the trapped oxygen.
Central California Watching.
Thanks for watching, we see you Central Cali.
Thanks
Thank you
A cluster weld as in airframe 7/8 .049 wall, t joint with diagonal from both sides.
I aspire to own a tig machine one day. Nice welding!
Do it man it will be one best decisions you make and youll have so much fun and make many friends within the industry. Thanks for watching
I highly recommend the PrimeWeld TIG225X ACDC for about $869 and it comes with a CK Worldwide 17F 3 series torch. This machine is freaking awesome which it’s capable of HF Start, Pulse width modulation, 2T/4T function, AC Balance for aluminum that equals a red or blue box costing a $1K or 2k more!
Go for it!
Wouldn't it be cooler to switch to a laser welding machine?
Do it! I got the primeweld 225 too and it’s decent. Learn cad and then you can use services like send cut send and you really don’t need that much shop space just a welder, table, and grinder
Your welds look perfect! I have to weld some 4130 tubing where the fit up is not very good. Do you ever purge the inside of the tube? I realize a small hole would be needed to allow the argon to escape. Also, have to weld some 4130 to 4140 machined parts, I plan on some preheat around 300 degrees, would I still use the ER70S-2 tig wire? thanks
Nice if you could do .035 or .049 tube…
If i come across some material ill hold onto it to make a video. Thanks for watching
I would like to ask, can chromoly weld by smaw process?
Good job buddy good in fair
Could you cut the upper high bar on a bike, and attach it to the lower bike tube, to make a step thru bike?
I've only used thoriated tungsten so far, how would you say the E3 compare ? Thanks !
I really prefer the E3 or the 2% thoriated. Its all preference really and I would say they are very comparable to eachother. Thanks for watching
Great video. The only point I would like to mention is that according to Gerry Uttrachi (author of Advanced Automotive Welding (2012) and Weld Like a Pro (2015), Vice President of Esab for 10 years, 2007 President of the American Welding Society (AWS)), the "best" TIG rod for 4130 chromoly that will not be PWHT'd is ER70S-2, not ER80S-D2. Those books I mentioned go into detail as to why.
Thats for letting me know, I definitely need to look into this guys work. I appreciate you reaching out and thank for watching.
Is it safe to look at the screen when you're welding?
Can you weld chromoly to mild steel?
do some thin wall a/c tube with oxy acc..
Could you make a low step bike with a high step bike? By cutting a step over bar from the bike. Then welding this upper bar over the bikes lower bar?
chromoly can rusted / corrotion ?
Where is your shop?
With no previous experience with metal or welding, could someone please tell me if 6061 would be much different than what's used in this video?
Very different. 6061 is aluminium, requiring different weld settings (AC), different amps, different filler, and the actual behaviour of the puddle is different, so it requires some practice if you're used to steel. The metal itself has very different strength properties, so you'd need to design your piece differently. Finally, it might also require some post-weld heat treating that a 4130 frame might not. It's a fairly complex area.
@@mikehindley3 thank you for your reply, I'm not a welder by any stretch of the imagination, I have old mountain bikes made with 6061 & was maybe thinking of making them into something else, but, if it's difficult to do with a stick welder, then I'll need to rethink my plan. Thanks again for your reply.
@@campbellspears3929 definitely hard to do with a stick welder, especially or a beginner. If you want to make some cool artwork (with holes in) then give it a try. For anything remotely structural or weight-bearing, I'd avoid! This video features TIG welding, which is a different process to stick, and it's hard in different ways (and more expensive).
czcams.com/video/_g-IWPYNIeI/video.html
@@mikehindley3 yip I'm a total noob to welding, can't afford a decent welder, so, I think I will redesign my idea, thank you for your reply.
Other methods of welding this, mig stick etc?
We can definitely show case those processes but for welding such costly material, the cleanest and most effective weld process is what is usually chosen. Thanks for watching
@@SuperformanceFab yeah I guess, makes sense!
I have performed many repairs on moly motocross frames back in the early 80s with oxy/fuel before I got into the world of tig.
I'm welding a 4130 .190 plate to a .035 tube using 4130 as the filler at work for lockheed Martin
Right on its fun stuff to weld. Thanks for watching
Nice beads
Is Chrome bike could weld
I am going to weld cargo bicycles with chromoly.
Thats awesome its fun stuff to weld man, thanks for watching
And it’s use for steam pipe
Do you ever worry about back-purging Cr-Mo?
It’s not Lighter, It actually heavier 1x1 take 1 foot sections same wall thickness, its a tad heavier, it stronger so you can use half the thickness over mild steel. It’s more brittle than mild steel
So whenever you doodoo @9:48
Hello! We are the manufacturer of laser welding/cutting/cleaning/marking machine, did you need these kinds of equipments in production ?
Kamu masih muda, tapi sudah jago dalam bekerja
🇮🇩 🇮🇩 🇮🇩
What kind of material are you welding? Maybe you should mention it.
I state that were going to be welding on some 4130 Chromoly tubing. Thanks for watching
Great attention to detail there bud
Missed the title did you!
Don't mean to knock the video but this was an average video at best. The welder doesn't know to use the right terminology when explaining material behaviour of chromoly, the term he is looking for when describing how the tacks will crack is "brittleness" and reduced "ductility".
The welds are fine but I find that he contradicts himself when he first explains how Chromoly needs lots of shielding gas then fails to let the post-flow shield the weld when it is still glowing red (7:20 mark).
Key takeaways from the video would be mainly to keep heat input low and to use the right filler metals. Any welder would know not to directly quench the weld when it's still hot, and if you don't you really shouldn't be working on Chromoly tubing.
SAMPE vs. NATO AGARD
My dumbass watching this as if I'll ever utilize the useful information I'll get from this video; really I just want to know how my bikes are made lol
my name jeff
Never seen such rusty chromoly.....
You mean you are using a NEVERLAST WELDER !
