A delightful, free, flowering, medium-sized climber, reaching between 10 and 12 feet, making it more than manageable for growing up, the front of the house along a pergola or up a post
Vigorous, healthy and fast to establish this climber will flower all the way along the length of it stems and is often used in displays by David Austen at the likes of Chelsea and Hampton Court, Palace flower show
The mid pink flowers open completely flat, giving a disc like saucer shape to the flower, which, as it ages Gaines a pale halo around the outer edge, giving it a beautiful aged look which is enhanced by the texture on the outer edges of the petals, which are deeply ruffled, adding a real sense of romance to this rose
Flowers are held proudly so they can be seen and it performs very much like the pilgrim,
The buds are deep, Scarlett in colour flashed with apricot, just as they open, James Galway has a very small and very few thorns, making it ideal for planting in high traffic areas near paths or front doors
there is a strong and very distinctive fragrance toold rose fragrance mixed with a small amount of floral musk strangely with notes of fresh

Gardener Ben, this is why I value your reviews so much. I happen to have had two of these roses for the last 6 years, and you hit every point I hold with this rose. You really do a great job with your reviews putting in lots of forethought into them.
Thank you, that’s very kind of you to say you’d probably very shocked to find out that when I do my reviews they filmed in one continuous take that never edited or altered in. Anyway I’ll try and bring you my opinions as they come to me. Obviously research is done into the growth habit size, bigger and disease resistance, but things like fragrance are done ad hoc I’ll never review a Rose by haven’t had in the ground for at least 12 months. Many of my roses are 10 years old.
One of my favorites!! I loved my climbing James Galway and my climbing Pilgram, had both on a trellis together. I moved the trellis and killed my Galway when moved. Still have my Pilgram but it is now a shrub rose.
I have just got back into roses in a big way, after a gap of many years [don't ask!], & two of the roses I picked were David Austin's The Pilgrim & James Galway. The other two which made up my first purchase, were Port Sunlight & the now retired Winchester Cathedral. We live in very rural mid-west Wales, & all were still blooming into December, so they have had virtually no chance to rest & recuperate. I will really need to feed well & generally mollycoddle them this year.❤❤❤

I was at my local rose nursery (Select Roses) in the DA section when I caught the scent of a Rose, I sniffed several before discovering it was coming from James Galway. Ever since then I've added it to my Wishlist. I found it's fragrance to be very captivating and I was surprised how it took over the entire area.
Alas, that day we had to part ways, dear Tess ot'D and Crown Princess came home with me instead. #benmademedoit
Trying to grab the discontinued roses when I see them, before they are removed in NA. Sigh.

Hi, and thank you for your message. I’m holding off on my new top 20 for now and my new series of best of collections. There has been such poor weather here in the UK over July. I’m really wanting to bring you as many high-quality flowers during the videos as possible so as soon as the second flush really kicks in I will begin filming again
I’m struggling with mine on a north facing wall, trying to climb it around our front door. I bought it because the description said it could survive north facing / shaded areas. I think it probably is too shaded. It’s been in the ground 18 months and I have fed at the usual times.
Do you suggest anything? It has flowered this year and it was beautiful, but no further growth.
I’m in central France and it has been a tad on the warm side. Whilst we have very dry weather we do water it regularly. I NEED this rose to perform - ever since I was a little girl (a long time ago) I have wanted a pink rose around my cottage front door. Thank you!

Just found your channel and new sub. I have just pre ordered 4 bare root Gertrude Jekyll for November to climb up,our bungalow. Do you have a video for beginner tips ? What to do and what to avoid . I’ve read black spot is a common problem , can I avoid that ? Thanks for any advice 😊

Mine is in a partial shade spot, has been growing rather slow. It’s been three years, more like a shrub rose, not high enough to climb. Not many blooms either. I guess it likes full sun.
Shade often comes with dry soil conditions. This one will grow in partial shade very well, but you must make sure you water it well as well. If it’s by a wall or under a tree or hedge the soil is likely to be dry. Make sure you water at well
@@the_gardenerben Thank you for the advice. I think that was the problem in the last two years. This year I installed dripping system, it gets abundant water, for the first time, it had more than 20 flowers and now there are two strong new canes! and the second flush in on the way :)
I just planted a James Galway bare root rose this year. So far it's only sent out one main cane, now with a couple of laterals :-) but there are several short shoots at the base of the plant that don't grow out. Should I do something like trim them just a bit to encourage growth? Or do I just leave them to their own devices and try to be patient? I'm a newbie :-) thanks for all the great info.
Climbing roses can often take several years to establish themselves. The first 24 months of the ground is all about getting them happy settled and established much as James Galway is fairly quick to establish itself and the flower don’t expect too much of it too quickly. Give it some time, keep all the growth at the moment. You can address what you want to keep tie in and train during your first winter pruning.
Hello Ben, thank you very much for the informative review! I have a northeast facing wall and im thinking about a shade tolerant climber. I am debating between james galway and crown princess margareta. Which one between these two would you recommend as more shade tolerant? Thanks alot!!!
If you can still get hold of Crown princess, it’s a firm favourite of mine I would go with that one

Hi 😊 I have one question. You said it flowers well throughout summer. Does that mean it slows down considerably in autumn or stops completely? I normally would expect a repeat flowering rose to bloom until the end of September or even in the first half of October.
It will really depend on the season but you can expect June -September
I just seen another person on CZcams complain about this exact rose saying they take long breaks between blooms. Is that true? I truly hope not because I am absolutely in LOVE with this rose lol! I really want to purchase one to climb along my porch this is my absolute favorite looking rose. Google says it’s a repeat bloomer from spring until first frost but this lady said on CZcams that James Galway takes long breaks in between blooms and that bummed me out.. I am on the fence now about buying this rose.
Personally, I find this hyper performer I think people are far too quick to jump onto the Internet and express negative opinions no flower or rose is going to flower continuously non-stop throughout the entire flowering season, especially if it’s not being cared for or watered correctly
