  • In this video, I will show you how to turn on Proxy Clips for a smoother timeline scrubbing experience. We also dive deeper in managing proxy clip data. I also show you how to set either your CPU or GPU to process the proxy clips in Kdenlive.

Good video. Thx. But funny: You drop video including audio to timeline, ungroup it and delete audio every time :-). But it is much easier only drop die video to timeline without audio track. If you go with your mouse on the clip there is a hover effect of 2 symbols. An audio and a video symbol. You can go with your mouse over the video symbol, click and hold and pull it to the timeline.

Awesome video. It's helpful seeing you try out settings and sharing your experience.

The reason you have to come out and go back in to see the proxy changes is because you are using the "settings/configure kdenlive/proxy clips" menu option which sets defaults for new projects, not the current project. To change the settings for the current project use "project/project settings/proxy" which changes the settings for the current (loaded) project and doesn't require reloading.

Proxy clips are at a lower resolution than the original video files, that way your CPU cycles are not taken up with rendering preview in higher resolution (ie 4K)

14:40 add the the clips 1 by one, let the kdenlive finish the proxy conversion, in the system monitor you can check how many ffmpeg sentences are running. with 2 or more clips in the bin ffmpeg cloging the cpu/gpu and it's freezing. and in the settings - environment set up the cpu cores for proxy, ussually is ok with 1 less from total number of cores

Nice video. Your proxy clips' resolutions change succesfully, BTW. But the quality is already low to begin with, so the playback is smooth. This is why you can't see a difference between 640 and 1080.

Just to clarify, Kdenlive is CPU based and doesn’t use the GPU while editing or creating proxy clips, but it can use the GPU to render a video with the correct output settings

hat is false. KDEnlive can use the GPU to render proxies. Editing is a mixed bag as depending on the effects applied, the GPU will get more or less use

Nice and very clear tutorial, except the very end where you tried to get different resolutions for proxies and missed that project settings has the size for proxy clips AND if you set it to 720 it is not 720p - it is 720 pixels wide (not 1280 pixels wide like 720p resolution would be). Difference from 640 pixels wide to 720 wide would not be that great.
Not sure if it was supported by 2 years back but now there are dummy parameters where size is populated and size is not hard coded (at least in all) generating scripts. Sometimes kdenlive also just overwrites some of those parameters if there is a selection menu. (a very nasty implementation that programmers really should avoid)

Is there a way to change the folder where Kdenlive saves proxy files?

I loaded in a 20 minute video and it took my Potato PC a while to transcode a proxy clip, like 5 minutes, not sure if settings could speed it up. This would be very useful when doing lots of video post editing like Curves, Gamma, FTT, and that kinda stuff

Hi..my question not related to proxy. Normally the video I create is aspect ratio 16:9 ...what if I want it be 9:16 to fit the shorts ?

Does a proxy clips effects on video quality? Or just for preview?

for some fucking reason after doing this successfully one time having proxy clips ticked on just made my clips not work, I edit speed paints and most my video segments are long, I'm not sure what making it loose brain cells but it's super fucking annoying this stupid bug is making proxy clips unusable for me.
