  • Guitar Center's Product Spotlight provides a comprehensive overview of the Roland JU-06 Sound Module.
The limited edition JU-06 is an authentic recreation of the iconic Juno 106 synthesizer. Sometimes described as one of the last great synths of the analog era, the Juno-106 became a favorite thanks to its warm sounds and instant sound-shaping ability. The controls were right on top of the unit, giving many users their first exposure to real-time manipulation of synthesizer parameters. It was easy to use, sounded fantastic and its chassis was brightly colored and distinctive: in a word, fun. You can even slide the JU-06 into the optional K-25m keyboard unit for a self-contained, go-anywhere synth experience.

Wow, he's presenting a new synth and starts with chaining three of them together. To me that's admitting 4 voices isn't nearly enough and you need to buy a few to make it sound decent... Don't get me wrong, i have a JP-08 and a JU-06, but this is sending out the wrong message!

I own one. It's fun and it makes me want to play it. Case closed. If it's not for you then fine but don't slander others if they like it and vice versa.

Wow !! I bought my Korg X2 from you when you worked at Guitar Center in Roseville, MN back in 1995-1996. Haven't seen you around here in Minnesota since....maybe once at American Pro Audio back in the late 1990's. What a trip to see you doing this Demo now working for Roland. I just ordered up the JU-06 with the KM25 keyboard....these sound very cool !!

I have an August 1984 (early serial) and I bought one of these. I have been through several (4 I think) 106's because I have always thought that they did not sound anywhere as good as the old Juno 60 (thin by comparison). Finding an early rev, made me happy.
This unit is no joke, the sounds are just as punchy as the real deal and in some cases, I think they actually sound a little better than some of the later revisions of the original 106.
On synth models, it's not the low/bass that you have to watch for, it's the high frequencies. Playing the highest notes do reveal some anti-aliasing. The JU 06 in general let's you get pretty high up there before you hear the problems, but they are there. You get some weird harmonics and the "punch" or ability to cut through a mix just disappears.
    Key differences:
    - Unison Portamento is not as deliciously sloppy as the original...
    - Portamento parameters are harder to get to and the control seems more coarse.
    - Sounds that overdrive the VCA have a more pronounced crackle.
    - Unison goes poly if you hit more than one key (I hope they change this behavior in an update). There's no way to prevent it
    - Unison is obviously only 4 voice which does sound a little different. I can make the case for 4 voice unison actually being more musically usable than 6.
    - The JU 06 can be set to be *velocity sensitive*
    - You can add a primitive delay to your patch
    - Step sequencer is kinda fun.
    - Faster-than-original LFO rate.
    - The "noise" parameter is clearly flatter and less punchy, but in a mix, I dare you to assert that you actually notice.
    - There's no Poly 1/Poly 2 and with limited polyphony, it would have made a lot of sense to copy that function.
    - Actually think the midi implementation is even more spartan on the JU than the Juno.
    - Chorus 1+2 = Chorus 3...but I don't like the sound.
    - I think the HPF has greater range on the Ju 06.
    - Original Juno 106 had 2 banks of 64...Really?! in 2016 we have half the memory.
    - The envelope on the JU is WAAAY faster. The gate is faster too.
    - I think the volume mix between the saw and the pulse are uneven in the 106 and dead event on the JU possibly accounting for some of the slight differences. This could also be an issue with my copy of the 106. The pulse is slightly louder than the saw in my case.
    Pros:
    - Pretty good in a modern workflow - I can get my audio to come over USB with low latency in Logic. "Audio Input" (for chaining units) also makes it into your DAW.
    - You can optionally suppress chorus noise!!!
    Cons:
    - Stacked units must have the same patch set...BOOO!!
    - I would have rather had the missing knobs and buttons than the pitch bend/mod ribbons.
    - JU/Juno cannot modify each other's parameters!!! Aw man, I thought that would be cool. At minimum, it would have been awesome to modify the filter over midi... My juno stage can send filter cutoff and resonance params. The JU ignores them.
If you play the units together panning each one hard to one side or the other. You can make the JU sound like anything the Juno can do. The opposite is not true. On the JU, almost everything has a little more range.
6 Voice unison portamento is why I keep the 106. Since I don't have to choose between them, I think the JU is just fine.

    • @BrandonRyan
      @BrandonRyan Před 8 lety +11

+Evan Campbell Most of the demo shows a single unit. The reason I briefly show 3 is because you can stack them and it is a feature of the product. Plenty of people buy two. Some buy more. I showed three to show that it can be done and that 2 is not the limit.

kinda pointless to have only 4 voices for these boutique modules (except for the 20 voice JX-08)... you have to buy another to get more voices meaning you'll have a double set of parameter sliders and knobs, one set you have to ignore. There are VSTs out there with more voices anyway
