    Jack gets hands-on with Roland's rather colourful JU-06A module, channelling some of the finest classic analog synth sounds with a streamlined interface. Combining JUNO-60 and JUNO-106 awesomeness, this little module is a guaranteed winning formula. The oscillators are fat, the filter is warm, the sequencer is intuitive - check it out!

      I agree. If they managed to squeeze even six voices out of this I would already have one on my desk. I believe it requires a second DSP chip, which would draw too much power to run on batteries or USB bus power, and therefore require a power supply. I would be totally fine with paying a bit more and needing a PSU to support eight voices instead of four. Portability is cool but not necessary.

    The polyphony feels like no serious blocker to me - do I really need to hold down four notes per chord in an arrangement? Not generally. If it's your only synth THEN it's an issue MAYBE. Voice stealing is the next most obvious issue. I can work around that. We all know the perspective is a very heavy investment in an unreliable old synth, or a VST. Then consider how many new high end analogs are only 6 voices. I think people spend too long looking at specs sometimes.

    • @st0rmchild
      @st0rmchild Před 4 lety +4

      The real reason is the emulation is very CPU intensive (which is why it sounds so good) and a single DSP chip can only handle four voices. Adding a second DSP chip would drive up the price and also make it require a power supply. At that point it's no longer portable (couldn't run on batteries or bus power), which makes it look a bit silly to have miniaturized controls crammed into a small box. That said, I agree with you that this is a deal breaker. I would have bought it on day one if it at least supported six like the real Junos.

    • @itchyvinyl
      @itchyvinyl Před 4 lety

      Stormchild Yeah, I even bought a Minilogue, but the audible note stealing was a deal breaker - sold it. I have a Juno-6, so it’s not an issue. But if Roland wants to convince everybody to go digital, it has to measure up.

      I'm not sure they're interested in doing a 1:1 clone of the Juno-60/106. I think they've already made their move in this area with the DeepMind, which can achieve similar enough sounds (and more). If you specifically want the sound of the Juno-106, Roland's emulations are more accurate, but if you just want to be in the same ballpark with more overall versatility, the DeepMind seems nice enough.

      @@st0rmchild They have done a ton of mono synths, some with a lot of overlap so I can see them doing a Juno clone as it would only need a tweak or two on the chorus and refinement on the voices, pretty easy one for them and would sell thousands, complete no brainer and massive earner.
