- Guitar Center's Product Spotlight provides a comprehensive overview of the Roland JP-08 Sound Module.
The legendary Jupiter-8 synth is back as a limited-edition tabletop sound module. Part of the Roland Boutique series, the JP-08 is all about hands-on control and that iconic Jupiter sound. Those engaging analog strings and pads, those blistering leads, and those bass patches are yours again, but with better control than ever. With an array of 36 knobs and sliders from the original Jupiter-8 front panel, the 4-voice JP-08 is highly programmable and encourages sonic experimentation, especially with the built-in speaker and battery operation.

Bought this and a TR-09 two days ago. I'm having so much fun jamming with these things.

Good thing I can still get this online. I'm getting one of these for Christmas
"And here's another classic..."
I understand why they've built them like this; you need to buy more for more voices so that means more money for Roland BUT the community would have respected them more if they just rereleased the damn things just maybe smaller with all the original features and new ones such as USB connectivity maybe? Plus the analogue scene is really coming back because of the sound they give so surely they would have wanted their machines to be at the forefront of music by making them available to musicians, especially people in bands who don't know what they're doing but still accessible to veterans
It's rumored that Berhinger is working on a Jupiter clone.
I own a microkorg xl. Would I have to link up the sound module to that to make it work? I don't really get it. I have never bought a sound module before.
That's what MIDI is for :) Musical Instrument Digital Interface, its a computer language for keyboards, sound modules and computer programs to communicate simply via that 5-pin cable.
At 2:46, sounds sooo close to John Carpenter sounds. Wow!
If it's a limited edition, how many units were made?
+Max16032 I think limited editions means one unit is limited to 4 voices.
+Jauly Hahaha, epic answer!
Limited edition -means we want to test the water and see how many suckers will buy these toys. Once you hear Analog, anything else (mimicking analog) is just anal.
try to get one new nowadays. i think they intentionally made limited runs of the boxes, to make new classics aka demanded units.
Yeah why do a limited version of good stuff and keep making the crap ones?
the comparison of this 4-note Casio like , to a real Jupiter 8 is ridiculous...
🤣
It sounds 98% like the original.
I can't believe that people are going nuts over this... the only thing that sounds like a JP8 are the strings. Only 4 notes of polyphony, no keys... or mini keys if you add those, no arpeggiator, tiny sliders. At the bare minimum, they should have built it with 8 voices, with the arp and 61 full sized keys for 800.00 or less. Casio sells full sized keyboards for 100.00.
+synthartist69 The feature that got me hooked is the built-in sequencer . I don't use any laptop live, and I have a System-1 for pads and leads BUT that thing doesn't have any sequencer, just an arpeggiator. A sequencer included in this little JP8 recreation is a godsend for my live set. Portability is also a huge plus. But tha's just me.
+Max16032 The sequencer would definitely be a plus. It just irritates me that Roland will not build the real thing for those of us who are willing to buy one. Or even worse case scenario, build this in a full sized 61 key version, leave the sequencer on it, add a really advanced arp, and at least delay or delay and chorus with real time control. And of course, normal length sliders. And make the price fair. It wouldn't be the real thing, but it would be useful to me. BUT THEY JUST REFUSE TO DO IT.
+Max16032 I do understand the portability and the need for many, but there is also a need for guys like me that play with two hands and need at least 6 voices. To get 8 voices, I am then buying two of these, and still missing out on a complete package as I mentioned earlier. ugh
+synthartist69 reverb.com/item/1057003-vintage-roland-jupiter-8-analog-synthesizer-with-anvil-case-used-for-beverly-hills-cop-maniac Because its three is much cheaper than this lol
Sonicstate did a great comparison with a jupiter-8. Very close on most sounds.
How many sounds does it have?
As many as you can program.
Α Jupiter 8
Well what you gonna do.
Sounds nothing like a Jupiter 8. Nor do the 3P and Juno versions sound like their respective synths. they make sounds LIKE those synths but the tone isn't the same, the weight is lost, the response is dead. Typical VA really.
Lol... I love comments like yours. "THIS $300-400 SYNTH DOESN'T SOUND EXACTLY LIKE THE $7000 ORIGINAL!!!!". No waaaaaaaaaaaaay?!
Korg has been re-issuing analog synths with great success. I have no idea why Roland insists on these crappy digital modeling products. Sooner or later, it will dawn on them that they have to issue true analog synths. Till then, I an't buying these castrated synths.
ilikeost but they claim that it sounds like the jupiter 8.
Played one the other day. Very disappointing. Its a toy. I really wanted to like it, but you get what you pay for.
A toy that sounds great in a mix!!
Man people are really torn over the boutique series aren't they. I've got the JP-08 and JX-03 and they're great.
Toy in the hands of the one using it
This whole series is a joke.
Only thing thats a joke about these is the 4-voice limitations. No reason it can't be 8.
