Fun Fact: When this movie first came out a lot of Selena fans were pissed that Jennifer Lopez, a Puerto Rican actress, was cast as the role for Selena instead of a Mexican actress but once they saw her performance in the movie they changed their mind and loved her portrayal.
I thought it was widely known that the Mexican community wasn’t pleased with Jennifer’s portrayal. I’ll say I’m not much a fan of what she brings to the industry nowadays, but her depiction of Selena will a,ways rank high. There was literally no one better during that time and she took such care with the role.

I remember the first time I heard Selena on the radio. I was in middle school. I remember my dad driving me to school every morning They would be playing dreaming. Then when my dad would pick me up from school on the ride home they would be playing dreaming. Something about the inflection in her voice just really made it feel like she was So relatable. Her voice was very heart-warming. It was refreshing because it was different than anything else on the radio at the time. And then by the time I got to high school I remember one of my first dates with a guy who was a junior It was a 1996 Ford probe. Lol he picked me up and we went to see Selena the movie premiere at the movies. I was wondered what she would have accomplished. I really feel that Jennifer Lopez caught the soul of Selena . It was almost like God knew that she was a special soul that I had to live on somehow in some way in her earthly likeness body on Earth. What an angel Selena was and is. You could tell that whatever she had was something super special and she was a passionate person and friend. She is the type of friend that everybody longs for.

Jennifer Lopez did a fabulous job in the movie, Selena. She portrayed Selena in a way that was honorable and respectful to her memory. Frankly, I can’t think of another actress who could have done better. I was already a fan of Jennifer, but after seeing her portrayal of Selena, my respect for her skyrocketed. Great movie that I hope to see again.

The fact that JLo lived with Selena’s family for the entirety of filming and learned the mannerisms of Selena is just amazing. And it shows off in her portrayal of Selena. JLo learned everything she was able to for her to do what she did in the movie. JLo did Selena justice for the movie
And still 95% of the time she is singing holding the microphone on her left hand when Selena does it with the right hand (you can see it more clearly on the first concert) I never notice that until now...

No other celebrity that has passed, has made me cry or really wish they were still alive like Selena does.
Watch the true story of the Mexican singer named Jenni Rivera, she lived for her children and nothing could keep her down, she lived one hell of a life with so much going on day after day, drama after drama you'd think her life could of been a soap opera, a tele novela is how you say that in spanish. Her life will touch you and leave you tearing through out the movie, it's actually a series but it's well worth the time to sit down and take in her life into yours. The name of the movie I'm sure it's still on Netflix is called Mariposa Del Barrio she died in an air plane crash and had gotten threats from Mexico not to sing in their country as many artists who have went against thier threats and many have died. Chalino Sanchez was killed also before Jenni he was a good friend of the Rivera family when Chalino was branching out into Mexico just as Jenni did after him . Officials say Jenni's plane was a suspicious crash because it didn't have a black box in it. All who were on board including the pilot died in that crash nose first. Jenni is missed so so much as much as Selena. This plane crash should have never happened. You will love her also just as much as Selena, you will see😊

Agree! JLo is a great actress in my opinion (Monster in Law is comedy gold!) but this role was just the greatest thing ever. She was also great in Hustlers I just didn’t love the film overall. A lot of her movies do not showcase her amazing talent. But this movie!?!?! She fucking NAILED it. I always knew she nailed it. But watching the new series just made me appreciate this performance even more than I already did

Not a jlo fan but she did very well in honoring Selena's legacy with her acting. Thanks to this movie so many people around the world, discover, fall in love, and mourn Selena even still.

I can’t watch Salena without crying. So much talent lost, so young. It makes me sick even unto this day. Much love to her family that have to endure their loss, for absolutely no good reason. What a splash she made and will forever on the music scene.

I couldn’t take my eyes off Selena’s screen to even look up at J.lo’s screen. No shade to J.lo at all, it’s just, wow🤩 Selena has a strong presence you can feel through the screen. That voice, her smile, the way she moves & her style. She really was born to perform, she looks so natural up on stage.

I love this, but it is important to remember that Jennifer Lopez had to deliver the essence of Selena's entire career as a performer in just a few scenes. At first, it may look like JLo is doing waaay more than Selena actually did, but if you search through Selena's performances, you'll see that she did all of those movements at various points.

I 100% agree. I’ve seen so many vids and literally all of the dancing/gestures were done by Selena in a mixture of performances. Jlo copied the moves exactly how Selena did them. For example At 4:50 and 5:40 Selena does those moves in the El Paso 1994 of La Carcacha. It’s not seen in a lot of performances, but Jlo picked up some moves that weren’t done a lot for the movie.
She worked so hard. Under pressure. Under hatred. Under jealousy. The quintanilla family watching her every move while the movie was being made ... She did such a beautiful job. It's not easy to copy and mimic every detail. Even the smile. Jennifer was taught how and when to smile and do it right. Selena is an angel.

JLo did an awesome job portraying Selena. I had just turned four years old when Selena was murdered, my birthday is March 6, 1991. Even at a young age I can still remember seeing it on the news, I’m half Mexican so to see an idol now gone was very devastating to me and to everyone, especially the Latino community. I still listen to her music quite often and sing to it like I did when I was little. Rest In Peace Selena a TRUE lady of elegance, style, and peace.

I made that mistake in thinking the same thing. And that’s because JLo did such and amazing job in playing Selena. She actually studied her, got to know and worked with Selena’s family on this. actually there was a casting where a girl that look so much as selena won, also there were rumors where selena actually admitted that the girl really look like her . Her name was Leticia Miller but i think she was killed by her boyfriend a week before the movie production, also in that time people thought that JLo killed her or something like that...thats some rumors so I'm not sure if thats was real. her family felt pressured to take control and release a movie asap because within weeks after Selena's death, so many documentaries and movies were already being planned without their consent, and they wanted to be able to control the stories being made about Selena.

The series does suck. I tried watching it but it wasn't doing it for me. I think it's because there was a movie already and lots of clips on CZcams of the real Selena and so the series wasn't necessary in my opinion.

When I was younger I used to criticize J Lo for missing a few gestures here and there. But as I got older, and after seeing this video, there is no doubt in my mind anyone else could have done Selena justice at that time.
I thought at the time it came out, JLo moved more like Angela Bassett playing Tina Turner in the movie "What's Love Got to Do with It." Yeah, she was definitely off in the gestures.

Agreed....there is not one other that could have played Selena with more justice given.!!! No one would ever have been able to nail it exactly, move for move, gesture for gesture, look for look, but over all Jennifer Lopez took an iconic artist and paid the most beautiful compliment to her memory. In my humble opinion, one talented, beautiful performer played another onscreen... and I was made privy to the talent and beauty of an artist that I may not otherwise have been privy to.
Tejano music isn't my cup of tea, but...Selena sold me on her music. She has (yes, present tense because her presence is alive in her videos, and in our hearts), such a stage presence. She dances the whole time seriously, no wonder she had such a beautiful figure!! I do still feel for her family, and Chris Perez, and I cannot imagine what it has been like without her here for them. Bittersweet for them, but Selena deserves the love, and her story to be told over and over, and her music played and played for generations to come. No one like her. I was so sad to hear what that psycho did. And still, I cry when I hear certain songs, and think of her family. She deserves the honors and so much more.

The best thing about Jlo being casted as her for the movie is that she had the same rhythm and dance skills and most importantly, stage presence which Christian Serratos in the new Selena series does not. Its not something you can act out. You have to feel the music in your soul and know what it's like to enjoy singing and performing

Mary Jane I just watched an interview and her father said he only watched the ending once and her sister said she still can’t watch it even to this day 😔 The mother is never in interviews and apparently can’t even talk about Selena or have her brought up in conversation. It’s so heartbreaking it really is.
I remember dancing to her songs at the local Spanish dances. Amazing it was only 2 years from murder to the Selena movie. I don't think there could've been a better actress to play her.

Watching Jennifer’s portrayal of her next to the actual clips shows how good they did casting her for this movie.
For me JLo was Selena. She had the essence and spirit of Selena, herself.

I love when families pick the perfect individual to play someone they love. Some choices just fit. This was perfect. Jennifer was dedicated to learning every part of Selena. Jennifer introduced many people to Selena that would have never knew who she was. Once you learn who Selena is though, you find out real quick the world lost one of the best young artist of all time. She would still be touring today. She would have had a 50 year career, plus some. God bless her family. We love you Selena.

Believe it or not a lot of people were against J.Lo playing Selena. They felt the family should've found a Mexican actress instead of choosing a Puerto Rican one.

champagnecoloredeyes it’s hard to watch because I definitely do get emotional when I watch the biopic. I was 4 yrs old when she passed, but I was raised hearing her music and watching her movie. It’s sad to this day! 25 yrs later and Selena is still very much present in music today. She would have been 48 today and I have no doubt that she would kill the music industry and makeup industry and fashion industry if she was still here today.
