    • @Acecard-jl2py
      @Acecard-jl2py Před 7 lety +9

      I feel like Digi is not addressing the full problem. I feel like Digi needs to get out a weeb cast with Mother's basement and the others dicussing about "High School Harem Echi Light Novels and their Adaptations" And what the hell is going on and why they keep popping up. A different author but the SAME premise characters and story progression. Why these things are so damn popular after Sword Art Online. Why do they keep working? Are their adaptations lazy as a result?

    • @PotatoRankEX
      @PotatoRankEX Před 7 lety +2

      They are popular because people like them. The "it's shit ln's stuff" is a thought that's only prevalent in minority.

    • @TheMuffinMan1894
      @TheMuffinMan1894 Před 7 lety +1

      I've yet to read any LN but I've seen Digi's vids, and truly seems that the urban-mistery has been replaced by the boy dies and reincarnates/trapped in a fantasy game/world scenario. Not all are shit, and some that I've seen/want to check are Konosuba, ReZero, Shield Hero, Goblin Slayer and Rokka; it is still sad that there isn't that much variety on the (western) mainstream.

    • @PotatoRankEX
      @PotatoRankEX Před 7 lety +2

      Yeah. Most of the stuff that gets translated isn't really what one would call cream of the crop. I'm fortunate enough to be able to read a bit of Japanese and I can tell you that the best ones(LN's) don't exposition because they don't pander enough to one or two niches. Look at Youjo Senki's for instance. I've been following it since vol 1 and I can tell you it was super lucky to get an adaptation. Had Tanya been a man all the way then yeah, forget about the west even knowing about this series.

    • @PotatoRankEX
      @PotatoRankEX Před 7 lety +1

      The problem isn't that there's only stuff of one kind, the problem is that they choose the worst ones of that kind to adapt into an anime / localize in the West

      Too bad most of them had terrible, TERRIBLE marketing behind. (A common trend in Japan until recently.)

    Ah... Welcome to the NHK. Back when I was in high school, I remember spending my very first paycheck on buying the light novel. It cost me like 200 bucks at the time, I couldn't find it any cheaper, and since I'd heard Tokyopop was going under at the time, I figured that this would be my only chance to buy that book. It's so different from the anime, but I still keep that book as one of my most prized possessions in the same way I maintain that the anime was one of the most important things I'd ever watched.

I definitely recommend those for anyone into indie style comics, since those artists and writers had just started out at the time.

    Tokyopop also tried to promote light novels in the late 2000s, with releases of Gosick, Full Metal Panic and Slayers, alongside the release of Welcome to the NHK. Needless to say, it didn't take off.
    Vertical licensed only the first volume of Zaregoto at the moment. I imagine that they're doing the same thing that they did with Monogatari, seeing if it's popular as a light novel before going all-in. Time will tell if they continue.

      I've been meaning to read Occultic but I'm not too keen on e-books, so I'm glad for the printing. Now I just have to wait for someone to bring the old series that got their localisations cancelled. (Boogiepop, Kino, etc.)

    Zaregoto reprint when? It's quite nostalgic for me, I'd love to have the other volumes besides the second one.
    That being said, I think everybody should know about Faust and Dengeki Bunko from the light novel maniacs in Drrr.

    • @Trixiethegoldenwitch
      @Trixiethegoldenwitch Před 7 lety +5

      Are they fans of Faust in the light novels or something? I only remember them being Dengeki Bunko fans in the anime.

    • @erejnion
      @erejnion Před 7 lety

      They had like all sorts of light novels. Dengeki Bunko mainly, of course, but they do mention Faust in the anime too.
      ...if I remember correctly? I mean, it's completely possible that I'm just conflating my memories right now. It's been ages since Drrr aired, and even longer since I know about Faust.

      That's just it. The more you read, the more you imagine. The first book can be a chore. The 2nd you learn how to read fast in detail. The 3rd you slide through while BEING THERE, PRESENT in the setting. That of course is if the book is good.
