    10% of anime watched = how many favourite series you should have.
    That's really strange to me, as I only have 5 tentative favourites (one I need to rewatch), yet I've seen nearing 200 series, not including shorts/specials.
    I can't even think of 20 anime that could consistently stay on a favourite list for a decent duration

    I read a bunch of analysis of Utena before I watched it, and I'm not sure I would have made it all the way through otherwise. It's my favorite now, but without knowing something of where it's going and what it's doing, it can just seem... kind of bonkers.
    I can't even with how happy I'd be if you did a video on Utena.

    • @BranchesOfYgg
      @BranchesOfYgg  Před 8 lety +12

      I've wanted to write analytically about Utena for like 6 years, but it's always felt too daunting. But I felt the same about Eva until I started making videos about it, so who knows.

    • @nathanfleming6871
      @nathanfleming6871 Před 8 lety +3

      Is it really worth finishing? I loved episode 1-3, watched them very recently. But episode 4 was... not a good episode, I guess, and seemed relatively indicative of the future of the show. And I suppose I finished what I watched it for in the first place, so I had no issue leaving it behind for Konosuba and Madoka Magica. (I was curious as to how much Rebecca Sugar took from Utena for her over-anime-referencing Steven Universe, and boy, was it a MASSIVE inspiration! Borderline stolen, even.)

    • @brontesaurusrex7235
      @brontesaurusrex7235 Před 8 lety

      I think so! But for me, all you have to say is "post-modern fairy tale that explores and deconstructs tropes while also commenting on everything about adolescence ever" and I'm in. I find it fascinating and I come away with something new every time I see it. After my second view I wrote a (probably not well constructed or supported, because I was mostly trying to see if I could make it work) essay-rant thing about how Utena's duels through the series reflect the Fool's Journey of the Tarot. I don't know what I think about the assessment that Utena is the shojo Evangelion, but it's definitely pretty rich and dense.

    That 10% rule intrigued me, apparently my favorites list, excluding movies, is:
    - GitS (SAC & 2nd Gig)
    - Steins Gate
    - Monogatari (lumping the whole series together)
    - Neon Genesis Evangelion
    - Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu
    - Shinsekai Yori
    - Shirobako
    - Shiki
    - Psycho-Pass
    - Kill la Kill
    - Hyouka
    - Hunter x Hunter (2011)
    - Durararararararararara
    - Cowboy Bebop
    - Baccano
    - Sidonia no Kishi (a surprising one for me)
    Not quite sure how I feel about the list, if it really represents my taste or not, but certainly interesting to look at, not having done a favorites list before.

    So here's the thing, I saw Eureka 7 on its original adult swim run when I was 14 and it clicked because I could relate to Renton. I'm 24 now and I can still understand Renton, I remember being his age and it all makes sense and holds up but now I find myself more closely relating to someone like Holland. The thing about Eureka 7 is that while it is primarily about Renton and Eureka they through in Domminic and Anemone as well as Talhoe and Holland and they're all picked up at different ages and different enough circumstances that you can find something in them to relate to as you get older. I think I can actually apriciate the show more now, a decade later than I did when I watched it originally.

    Regarding your comments about ef at around 5:23, I think I completely understand how you feel. I had a similar experience with Clannad and AS.
    I first watched it in 2010 at age 18, so I was still a little hormonal. I was experiencing some depression and severe homesickness after living alone for the first time in a solo dorm room 10 hours from home. I had also just experienced my first family death that had actually impacted me. Suffice to say, the series took what little was left of my emotional composure at that time and wiped the floor with it.
    Because of that, I've always held it in a sort of sacred place, mentally. It was an extremely cathartic experience for me. Even being able to concede the series' many flaws is a somewhat recent development. But no matter how much my tastes shift, or how a re-assessment of the anime might result in a lower "score", I feel like it will always have some value to me that transcends quantization.

    Are you me from the future?! You like making lists on your free time (as do I), your favorite film director has been Quentin Tarantino for a long time (he's been mine too) and you mention your favorite movies of his are Pulp Fiction, Inglorious Bastards, and Kill Bill (my favorite 3 from him... Inglorious Bastards is my fav), and you critically analyze both the media content (mostly anime, which is my preferred medium of study as of late) and the creation of said content, as well as your own content as a creator (which I tend to do with people I know), and I've thought about making an analysis based CZcams channel (probably about anime and movies), but have never wanted to follow through with it... Maybe 6 years in the future (I'm 20) I have an analysis channel and move to Virginia....... Naw, I don't want to do either of those. Keeping doing you Digibro!

    Your experience with Utena is how I'm understanding Evangelion. After hearing yours and many other people's analysis of the show, I'd really like to rewatch it. It's a seven right now. Then there are other shows, like Spice and wolf, which might have been outside my interests and thus I didn't like it much, and want to see if I'll like it any more. I used to never rewatch anime because I knew I could instead watch a new series of the same length, but it is kind of fun to see a show I've already seen and figure out if I like it as much or for the same reasons.

    I think my only two favorite anime from my earlier days as an anime fan is Love Hina and Chobits. The only reason being that I read the manga for both, completing Love Hina and getting up to Vol.5 or 6 for Chobits. Beyond those series, I can't remember much about shows like Bamboo Blade, Tokimeki Memorial: Only Love, Futakoi Alternative, Myself;Yourself, and many others because I saw it way too long ago. Score-wise, I just give many of those older shows I saw positive scores of 6 and up because I remember liking them enough to not drop it since I had yet to follow the No-Drop rule. I could re-watch them, but that would take up too much time.
    I did a Top 100 when I had around 970 completed anime. If I did it now with 1793, I'd just not do a favorites list. Hahaha cause that just becomes a drag. Either I fail to put the shows I really want on the list because the number is too short, or the list is so long that it becomes a chore. I will probably abstain on a favorites list until I reach 2000 or 2500.

    About that 10% rule, 720 is probably the completed number on your MAL at the time. But that would include all the specials and OVAs, which most of the time aren't really relevant.
    Also, some shows have multiple seasons, like Baby Steps or Log Horizon, so do these favorites of yours count as a single one or do they take as many spots as the seasons they spanned ?

    I agree with the idea of the length of a favorites list being relative to the total number of shows you've watched, albums you've listened, etc., but I feel 10% is WAY too broad to put together a "tight" list with a minimal amount of entries that could easily be swapped out for another. When scoring stuff, I always try to make sure my number of 10/10 scores does not exceed 5% of the total number of scores I've given. In the same way, 5% sounds like a good length for a favorites list.

    The movie made so much to bring character development to other characters, like Ohana's mother plus the cutest kiss shot I've ever seen, Nako and showing her true self that was a so heartwarming moment. And the series in general is so great, there is no character that by the end I didn't love.

    Of the anime i recognize on your list (not that many), the biggest surprise was that Haifuri got an 8. I don't think it's bad or it deserves the not always positive rap it got, but it had sufficient flaws that I would have thought you would stick it into the 6-7 range.

    • @Trixiethegoldenwitch
      @Trixiethegoldenwitch Před 8 lety

    • @arkhangelskseverstal8682
      @arkhangelskseverstal8682 Před 8 lety

      The ones that really stuck out for me are A) Captain Mike's characterization which gets bent for the plot. In Episode 1 when they are being bombarded, Mike starts off sounding almost as if she's not aware they are under fire with her joke about "Shiro-chan" before suddenly making a decision. It was a real turn off, but Mike at least mellows out for about Episodes 2-4 into a captain who's lighthearted but has a sense of responsibility to her crew. She even represses her urge to see Moka-chan for the sake of the ship, and that was a point getter but then we have Episode 5, when Mike suddenly reverses mostly so we can have a scene of her rushing out to see Moka-chan, endangering everyone. After that Mike again mellows out and even learns about being on the other side (character development, yay!) but then goes all weak around Episode 10 or 11 so we can have that scene of having her dragged back to the bridge.
      Or B) the world. To achieve the goal of making battleships a real threat, the world employs the conceit that there is no aerodynamic flight (thus no missiles, no heloes and no bombers). I can just about swallow this one but then we start seeing the "modern" ships used by the adults ... which look exactly the same as our ships despite the fact our ships are designed for use with missiles and theirs shouldn't be. The end result is that they are weaker than many of the students' ships! This is just lazy and forced world-building.
      As an aside, to make "a battleship" the threat, they gave elite students the battleship. This doesn't make sense on a lot of levels b/c their battleships are the strongest ships available to the adults as a whole so why would they parcel them out to an educational establishment? Further, it defeats the standardization that should be a goal of a school. As far as possible, everyone in a school should use the same equipment which eases standard training and evaluating the performance of students. Giving the best crew the battleship means their performance cannot be easily compared to the rest because the ship is so different (and overall so much more difficult to operate). Basically the battleship is there to drive the plot, rather than as a part of a realistic world.
      Or C) the combat. What happens all too often is that they are mouthing off plausible ranges ... and then we get a Bird's Eye View which completely defeats that. Isn't part of the point of showing us combat to allow us to see HOW they fought? How can we do that if the graphics are completely implausible. Yes, OK, I get that we have to see the ships but darn it, how about at least not making it undeniable by giving us birds-eye views? Even Ass War *simulates* combat by flooding viewers with "decoy" stimuli and moving very fast so it might pass casual inspection.
      Or how about drawing the ships' sizes as needed to justify the plot. There is a scene where Hiei was confused to be the Musashi. This idea by itself is realistic. The problem was Hiei was drawn way too large and so everyone that can recognize ship silhouettes could see all too easily it wasn't Musashi.
      Graphics aside, the "safety devices". They really shouldn't have inputted that scene where the director gets hit, and yet everyone is unhurt and protected by a mass of goofy airbags that popped up out of nowhere. I get that they exploited Girls und Panzer's previous "carbon" conceit, but this was supposed to be a somewhat serious scenario and not a "sport". The dramatic tension really gets let out when it is obvious no one will be hurt.
      Further, even cutting out every flawed moment and emphasizing the strong parts (I really liked how they made nearly 30 people with somewhat distinct personalities), IMHO it never quite reached brilliance.
      I can see you liked Haifuri so probably A, B and C didn't bother you as much as it did me, but even leaving that aside, considering where Sansha Sanyou and Kabineri ended up on your list, I was thinking Haifuri would be their neighbor rather than all the way up in 8.

Your MAL says it doesn't have a score, so I'm assuming it's been a while since you've seen it and don't want to make a judgement yet. I can honestly relate. A lot of anime in my MAL list I haven't seen in years and I honestly don't know how I'd feel about a lot of them anymore. For one example, I watched Princess Mononoke recently for the first time in years and liked it a LOT more than when I first watched it. I don't know how much I'd like Higurashi anymore, probably nowhere near as much I think since I'm such a different person now.
    On the manga side I know stuff has definitely changed. For example, Berserk used to be like top 3 for me when I first read it since it was exactly the kind of manga my 17 year old self was salivating for without even knowing it, since I used to be a huge edgelord (extremely dark, excellent art, good characters, not beholden to trite ideas about friendship like a lot of battle shounen, etc). It had a huge impact on my perspective and my taste in manga, after that I pretty much read anything in the seinen demographic I could get my hands on to get more of that kind of grimdark borderline-nihilistic storytelling (including a lot of manga I don't hold in as high a regard anymore), it even influenced my own art and Miura was one of my art heroes whose art I held up as a gold standard.
    Nowadays I still like the series and understand why it's so highly regarded by its fanbase since I used to feel the exact same way, but the edge (the excess graphic rape, specifically) bothers me a little more now and I can't connect with it as strongly. I mostly still like it because of the art, Guts (one of the best manga MC's of all time), and the good characterization for a lot of the other characters like Farnese, Serpico, Sonia, etc.
    I know some things have stayed the same, Pluto was one of my favorite manga when I first read it almost immediately and I re-read it recently, still amazing.

Like I heard you mention Psycho Pass as a favorite, but I thought Psycho Pass S2 was pretty garbage. Another example is Fate/Kaleid Illya, I loved S1 but the follow up seasons have been very lackluster in comparison for me. Coincidentally I've started to make a list on my MAL this week. Since I've been watching anime deliberately for the last decade, It's a lot of work. It was too huge of a pain in the ass for me for a long time because I couldn't possibly remember all the names and didn't know how to rate a lot of them. But then I realize I didn't have to do it all at once. And since I can't remember all the names, it's much easier to just go through the entire list of all anime, letter by letter. I dont' score the shows I can't remember well enough and don't have strong feelings about. I give the old favourites of mine the benefit of the doubt and rate them accordingly.
      In the last few days I've gone through 2-4 letters a day while listening to postcasts or vlogs. I'm now at "O". I should have started it sooner but I's never too late and better do it now than later because the amount of anime won't decrease.
