I would love to see a race such as this only with one rule. It must be solar powered. Now That would be fun to watch. Don't get me wrong, I can't wait to see who wins. I want one.
Like a combination between this and Formula Students cars would be great, but I think we need better solar panels for races like that.

I used this with a 6th grade English class as we learned about alternative fuel vehicles, and they loved it! Thanks for the enthusiastic content.

22:00 Ah, the team of my brother. Nice to know he met Veritasium.
I'm a fairly wealthy individual and I was looking into gallium panels for my property to run my two 5k sq ft work shops and my 8k sq ft house. It was WAAAY cheaper to purchase normal silicon. Takes up a ton of space, I have 6,000 acres and it's still a noticable area taken
A ja mam dom o powierzchni 10 tys i działkę o powierzchni 10000arow i co z tego

At 7:45 the documentary says that Tokai "are the pioneers of the bullet hull design." That's not quite true. Michigan and Kogakuin unveiled bullet cars the same year that Tokai did. And bullet hulls had existed before that year.
@Tony Dekker | I'm quite surprised that Wubbo Ockels didn't push harder on that shape back then...

I took part in my university's Shell Eco Marathon race which is essentially this but on a track and less extreme. I think people underestimate the difficulty of manufacturing. Even to achieve simple things like reducing panel gaps and obtaining a non-warped plexiglass windscreen, it take tens of hours of sanding and work. Seeing such perfect and clean looking models really goes to show the years of design and development that goes into them,

Wonderful
I remember the Sunraycer being all over the news when I was a kid in the 80s. Great to see all the innovation that's still happening. :-)
The GM team brought it to Purdue when I was a grad student there. It was a dramatic picture of what was possible- space-grade solar cells from Hughes, custom electric motors from AC Delco, wind tunnel testing at Caltech, and a massive support team including a car that went ahead and provided a constant feed of weather conditions. I asked the GM rep how much it all cost and his answer was "Enough to win." If you can't outsmart 'em, outspend 'em!
But now it's a competition for college students doing what big companies like GM used to do.
That's what it was called! I was born in 93 but I still have vague memories of it being talked about.

@@StremmeR Actually no longer. The former NUON/Vattenfall Solar Team and Delft Universty of Technology cut ties last year. Source: I was part of another student team at TU Delft. TU Delft has since thrown out the other student teams as well.

Them: Wanna find "cleaner, greener ways of doing things"
Also them: Use modern composite materials for their cars, most of which are a nightmare to dispose of properly.
@Muckin 4on well... See the problem with what you've said is mainly that you do not know the rules of the car design. Also a molten salt thermal engine. Are you joking. They're never going to produce nearly enough energy to do that in that dinky little car. Plus it would be a huge safety hazard and also extremely heavy, making it a bit too useless. About the creativity and thinking outside the box thing, you're wrong, the teachings the are given aren't outside the box because if you teach them that then that's pretty much redefining the box isn't it. These people work years of Thier life trying to come up with better solutions for these things, unless you know exactly what's going on or know more about it and can creat a better product than them then continue your criticism. But what you've said isn't even criticism, withought any expertise or research into the topic at hand any opinion of yours would amount to the same as an ants opinion on how to prepare mashed potatoes, utterly useless that is.
I cringe whenever I see an undeserved opinion out there, so utterly useless. None of them have any idea what they're talking about.
Still better and greener than the crap we drive everyday.

Love this car
Wow, I proud of you
this has improved so much!
I remember watching a video (news? 60 minutes?) on this race back in the '90s, and the cars were sooooo slow, and it was more a question of if anyone would finish. Now it is a real race!
They've actually had to change the rules a few times over the years to slow the cars down enough so that they won't break the highway speed limit.
@@tonydekker7792 lol, that's kind of amazing!
Also, what better place to put a no-rules autoban style highway than through the austrailian outback?
@@tonydekker7792 cari masak an
Kind of counter-intuitive to "limit" them. The Outback is "mostly" deserted. A better approach might be to make them subject to seeding tickets when nearing towns like "any other car". if I were driving a 200+ mph Porsche 911 Turbo S through the deserted outback, I would "very likely" be in excess of the posted limit, away from towns. Enough to where a Cessena 210 isn't keeping up....
That's a lot of work, even a small damage can affect the speed, if these cars improve even more through the years then I can imagine what future would be like.

Thank you.
In the beginning years of this race 90s a private entrant from Australia made his own car in his shed designed and manufactured his own engine, The car ran a average speed of 60 kph throughout the day and night, It worked on a method of solar thermal heated cells that where used one at a time to keep the car going during the night, Unfortunately one of his indicators was not working at the start line so he was not allowed to race. Then the rules where changed to electric solar cell only and stop for the night. So he could not enter the next year.
