Pat's vs. Geno's! Which Tourist Trap Philly Cheesesteak is Better?

- čas přidán 1. 05. 2024
- Pat's King of Steaks and Geno's Steaks are the two most famous restaurants in Philadelphia bar none. Pat's vs. Geno's is a debate that has raged for decades now and everyone has an opinion on which they prefer. There's one thing to keep in mind though: By everyone I don't mean most Philly locals. Pat's and Geno's are mostly tourist attractions and local Philadelphians don't really eat there, unless they are entertaining out-of-towners. They are far from the best cheesesteak in Philly even if they both have the claim to being the first cheesesteak in Philly.
Still, Pat's and Geno's are such an iconic Philly rivalry, and such a well-known rivalry from foodies in general, I do think it is worth checking them out at least once in your life. Tourist destinations are tourist attractions for a reason: Because they're fun! I think it's still fun to check these two spots out, even if you know they won't be the best Philly cheesesteaks you'll ever have. Besides the historical significance of the two restaurants, Sometimes, what's most important is that you have a good time!
Is Pat's King of Steaks a tourist trap? Is Geno's Steaks a tourist trap? The answer to both questions are indubitably yes. But still, let's see if Pat's is better than Geno's or if Geno's is better than Pat's just for the fun of it!

This is like comparing a broken arm to a broken leg. Both suck, but one must suck less 🤣
Well spoken
They dont suck at all... They are good cheesesteaks... They use good meat, good Amoroso rolls. They are just quality and a bit above average. They are overpriced tho. BUT, the one thing I like about Pats and Geno's is their consistency, and their rolls are always fresh, no matter what time you go. I get it though, they have become a tourist trap, and they are ovepriced, so if you want to factor that in to donwgrade them, fine, but to say they "suck" is a bit absurd. And I have lived in South Philly for 38 years.
@@JonHop1 agree.
@@JonHop1Maybe back in the day they were above average but not today with all of the different cheesesteak spots in Philly.
That Geno’s sub doesn’t look appetizing at all
terrible actually
Its the opposite of appetizing!! 😮
looks like 💩
Steamed gray meat 🤮
@@Tloc103 🤣🤣 essentially yes
“food p0rn” is great, but the episodes at tourist traps are so fun, it lightens things up sometimes
agreed. have watched few of his videos where he reviewed some "tourist trap place" and gave honest opinion of it
It’s really cool to see your channel growing recently. Your camera work, voice control, expressions, everything has improved quite drastically. One thing I feel not changing is your honesty. Keep it up!
Buddy after a long day at work your videos are concise and descriptive … your perspective is explanatory… thank you for showing us great places
The best Philly Cheesesteak in Philadelphia is a toss up between John of Roast Pork, Tony Luke's and D'Alessandros. D'Alesssandros finely dices the steak. The best bread on a Philly Cheesesteak is Tony Luke's. John of Roast Pork uses provolone instead of cheese wiz and surprisingly it tastes better. It's your personal choice but these are the 3 places with the highest ratings for Philly cheesesteak
you mean real cheese tastes bettere than processed cheeze from a can? no way!!!!!
Very much agree with you!
Johns roast pork is the best hands down
It definitely ain't Tony Luke's. But their roast pork sandwich is better than their steak.
@@TheSleeds fact about John's . But whenever I'm in town my first stop is Dinic’s for a roast pork
I just want to thank you. Your videos have helped me with my menu concepts for my new restaurant. Because of you, i have added hot dogs to my menu with the housemade relish. Such a beautiful menu item from new jersey. I appreciate it.
Pats. Hands down.
I think it definitely was the better of the two
@@uaeats For me between the two, definitely. Best in Philly no, but worth the experience. Just like Franklin BBQ is worth trying out. I say that as a bro born in PA, but raised in TX.
Prices are outrageous. I can make one for $4 tops. Should have peppers and onions, provolone. Soft Italian bread.
Hands down garbage like Genos smfh
I ate at each place 28 years ago and I'm a pats guy all day
We ate there in early 2000s and got 2x the meat and onion for like $11, Pats was fallin out da sub.. Today you see the roll at edges, meat is half what is was in good ole days, tourist traps.
Always enjoy your content
Jamming the wrapper from Pat's into the tabletop is a pro move! Well done!
Thanks for being real in your reviews!
Philly native. Been to both recently. Growing up my dad always went to Genos because we were in South Philly. This is a great video because you break the stigma. Yes they are tourist traps but THATS THE POINT. Anyone who visits Philadelphia should definitely visit. And definitely go to Johns RP ; P
I wonder if social media is the only thing keeping places like this alive. Back in the day, historic restaurants that were once good but eventually the food started sucking and/or getting too expensive would just go out of business and would only live on as memories.
Every time someone I know takes their first trip to Philly, they visit these places and post pictures on social media. It's almost "proof" they did indeed go to Philly.
I don’t think it’s social media. It’s just ubiquitous with the culture. I mean look at those places they stick out.
Thank you...I was going to say Tony Luke's... It's always been my fav... Their steak isn't like the others and their rolls are the best
Thank you for being honest and letting us know that Pat's and Geno's are tourist spots. Will be trying real / local cheese steaks...
What is the name of the tune playing in the background. I want to buy the cd
“Drunken piano solo at a saloon in 1901”
Pat's is better than Geno's but Angelo's is the best in Philly.
I agree
@@uaeats Not Amoroso bread but home made Italian i think excellent texture.
Completely agree
I'd take Jim's on South Street Over both of these two. My three go to are Angelos, JRP, and Jims.
dude, there’s no such thing only Geno’s
Thanks for doing both of them , we’re Pat’s fans but have enjoyed both over the years.
Cool that peeps are offering suggestions and not stabbing you in the face.
@uaeats imma buy you a tripod my mans.
Another gr8 vid ! Welcome to Philly!
Keep the uploads coming!
Adding an extra S to Pat's is getting to me.
snakes?
Yeah I agree whats with that.
Yeah, it sounds horrible! WTF talks like that?
LOL I came to the comments looking for the "Pat's's" complaints.
Why not pronounce it Geno’s(iz) then? Lol
i really like the idea of this video. i've seen some of your videos where you trying to review tourist traps and fairly review their worth while being respectful. it would be good idea to make the series on your channel to make tourist trap food review to help a lot of people to not get "scammed" while can enjoy your take on the food
I prefer Genos because of their condiment bar.
I heard Jim’s has opened back up now since after the fire. Maybe when your back check it out. Great review
If I remember correctly, I preferred Pat's "Steak" but Geno's "Roll". That's the perfect combo!
Same! I found Pat's steak was better seasoned while Geno's was bland.
Thank you for your honest opinion, UA.
I’ve always loved Ishkabibble’s most. The combo of provolone and whiz plus great hot sauce. Jim’s and Angelo’s both slap too
History is history to get to know the culture of a specific thing got to start from the beginning. My first introduction to Philly cheese steak was genos but glad to add it to a food trip of cultured eats
Yeah, I ate at Pat like about 42 years ago and it was the bomb. I’ll get a chance to go and try it again and see if it’s still good because what you just shown neither one of them look too good back in the day look way better than that and pats didn’t used to chop theirs. They used to make it like Gino’s got it and it was delicious and tender, and that was the first time I had cheese whiz, but I wouldn’t eat cheese whiz now we’ll see. Thanks again. Have a blessed one sir.🙋🏾♀️
Bro, you put out so much good content. How can we get your subs up???
Hey UA. The Amoroso rolls definitely helps both sandwiches. I’ll agree with you that the steak needs to be chopped and cooked with the onions so you have a consistent bite. Wiz is wiz. Glad you went back. 👋🏽
Some great cheesesteak spots will bake their own bread. But otherwise you can't go wrong with an amoroso roll!
I’m curious as to what you would think of Fedoroff's Roast Pork in Williamsburg
Love your reviews. How about reviewing Korean BBQ? Recommend rib no 7 and Yoon haeundae. Plus NJ has a lot of great spots.
I always screw myself over by watching your videos at the gym after work. Running on the treadmill while watching your newest upload is just torture.
Great content and commentary ! Still prefer my own version . Price is definitely right .
The way Geno's uses full slices of steak looks like it traps the cheese at the bottom of the roll. So if you bite the top, you get a dry bite with just steak. Sort of like a Chipotle burrito when one half is all rice and the other half is good stuff.
.I'm going to say Pats I liked the meat chopped up thank you for another great video have a great weekend love you ❤😊
2:38 imagine you so excited to take a picture selfie next to a cheesteak restauraunt lol.
U A. Which do you personally prefer. Chicago Italian beef ..of a Philly cheese steak please let me know
Where in South Jersey are you from?
Top cheesesteaks in Philly are Angelo’s and John’s. They are 1 and 2.
Crack me up when you say "not in a good way". Love your channel., great work. Geno's look like a steam steak.
Agree on the Woodrow's tip. Their sandwich was amazing.
You know you're gonna buy one from each place when you visit that corner, it's a win for both buildings, genius marketing
Drove with my nephew from D.C. to do the Pat’s/Geno’s challenge.
Highlight of the trip was that he saw his first drug deal.
Still got a bad taste in my mouth when years ago I went to order at pats and the guy said "wit or witout". I took a moment to ask "what you mean, with or without peppers?" the guy at the counter yelled at me and said for me to get out of line because i was taking longer than a few seconds to order. I hope the service has improved since then. They were also the place that said if you dont speak english they wont serve you, being one of the biggest tourist attractions in the city is just a bad approach for service...
🤣 yeah when you’re in line it says wit or wit out. Been there a few times so I know the deal
learn to order a philly steak and you wont have that problem.. it literally tells you on the sign how to order and the lingo u need to order in to keep the line moving. Its super nice to be able to just roll up, say "wiz witout" and be on your way in 2 seconds... Meanwhile, you got tourists sitting there explaining every little thing they want on their sandwich and taking 5 minutes to order...
Still the same, bud. Order right or get to the back of the line. Read the sign.
@@JonHop1... I went there once, read the sign and rehearsed my order in line like I was getting soup from the Soup Nasi on Seinfeld
i agree with you UA. Geno's i thought was very bland with very little cheese flavor. i thought it tasted like straight up steak off the grill. I like mines diced and mixed with cheese for more cheesy flavor. I would like to try angelo's when I come back to visit philly.
ordering at Geno's always gave me the worst anxiety. I had to rehearse my order in my head before i got to the counter
I live a few blocks from there and Mikes BBQ is the place to try.
I ate a Genos in 2014 while visiting the Jersey Shore and yes. I don’t even remember it being that great. Oh well, I will stick to Jersey Mikes here in Texas. Kick ass review!
You gotta do Meatheadz in Lawrence NJ.
These are my favorite kind of videos you do, UA! When you compare two well known places. Would love to see more like this 🙌
Edit: any videos involving Philly cheesesteaks are gunna get muh fuggin LIT in the comments. I love it.
I laughed so hard when you unwrapped the geno’s sandwich
How does this guy not have more subscribers?
U are 100 💯 percent right on the chess steak I love the one from Mayfair new London chess steak corner pizzeria
UA Eats you need to do pizza. My favourite cities for pizza are New York - New Jersey, Chicago and New Haven, Connecticut. Favourite restaurants : John of Bleeker Street Pizza (NYC), Princes Pizza pepperoni slice (NYC), Sally's Pizza (New Haven), Brooklyn Squares (NJ), DiLorenzos Tomato Pies (Robben NJ) Delucias (Raritan, NJ) and Giordanos Pizza ( Chicago)
I've always wondered, who is the statue of the dude perched on top of that tower? Is it Paul Revere or Ben Franklin or Sam Adams or someone else? Interested to know
I said it before and I’ll say it again, JIM’s. (They just opened up the other day after the fire renovations.)
Sweet! They finally reopened!
You are right on the money… one and done. Going to both is a lot of fun. But after that once…
Of the two I prefer Pat’s
Best cheesesteak I ever had, though, was at Mama’s Pizza in Bala Cnywd. And whatever you do, if you go there, don’t order the pizza!
Fun Fact: Pat and Harry Olivieri
The original cheesesteak was credited to Pat and Harry Olivieri, two brothers who ran a hot dog stand near South Philadelphia's Italian Market. Legend has it that in the 1930s, the brothers wanted to offer new sandwiches. Their new item was grilled beef and onions in a toasted roll.
Dalessandro's Steaks hands down the best!
It's crazy to see them charging $14-15 for a subpar cheesesteak. I was at Dalessandros last year and paid $13 for a cheesesteak that was 5x better than the cheese steaks I had at Pats and Genos. Pats' cheese whiz was so watery it was disgusting. Woodrow's is good, especially with the cherry pepper mayo but quite small compared to other cheesesteaks.
Delesandro's is way too ground up, not even close to Pat's or Geno's.
@@jphilli7929 Ground up to the point where the cheese and onions mix beautifully with the steak. It can take 40-minutes to an hour to get a sandwich at Dalessandros for a reason
@@kevinnorris6558Yeah stupid people that have nothing better to do...make this dog food at home
Had Pats the one time i was in Philly, it was good. Got a Tony Lukes in the airport and it was excellent!
I'll make my own in my Blackstone here in SoCal. I prefer chopped steak and not will done. Has to have some juice in it for me. Unfortunately I can't get those rolls here, Melaney from SoCal
make some its not hard.
I ate at both places on April 27th and definitely Pat’s was way better. The steak at Pats had a better taste and the quality as well. Oh, also the fries were crispy. Geno’s sandwich had no flavor at all. Below average. Their marketing was better with the signs and establishment but the steak sandwich was horrible. Pat’s for the win.
Thank you for your input
You’re welcome… I hope you get to enjoy it
I'm in Philly often and have ate at both places it's a good sandwich at both places but just not near the best cheesecake in Philly .... Don't forget to check out Redding terminal market be safe and eat well to all 👍👍
It's 'Reading', not Redding.
Woodrows is legit--one of my favorite in the city (it is a slightly jazzed-up version of the classic)
Next time you come down this way try Leo’s steaks in folcroft! Amazing!
Try Lilo Pizza/ Cheesesteaks in Hanesport NJ for a rocking cheesesteak.
Also, from what I've heard, nobody orders regular cheese wiz in Philadelphia (the bright yellow cheese, search 'regular cheese wiz in Philadelphia'). Provolone is definitely the most preferred cheese if choosing between American, Wiz, or Provolone. I also want you to try another cheesesteak place called Steve’s Prince of Steaks, with sharp Provolone cheese and onions, you could also get the double-meat cheese, and Sunshine Sandwich Shop, with 'The Paulie', you can look for the menu on Yelp in one of the reviews there.
@CreedK said in Bon Appétit's video titled "16 Philly Cheesesteaks in 12 Hours. Which Is the Best? | Bon Appétit":
"That Woodrow's house cheese is exactly the kind of thing that more places should be doing. Regular cheese whiz is a perfect pairing for cheesesteaks because of its texture. But let's be real here, it's still a dogshit fake cheese product that has no business being in your digestive system on a regular basis (which is a problem if you like cheesesteaks and cheese fries)."

Cooper sharp for locals
Hot pockets Philly steak & cheese is better cuh
So both places had great bread, but Geno's "kneads" to step up their game a little more
I was going to share a dumb pun, but I realized it was half baked
Genos cost less "dough" to buy!!
@@johnmacdonald3070 Geno's doesn't look the least bit appetizing.
You are doing such great work! Can I make a suggestion? Vary your music. I've heard the same ragtime piano piece in your shows like a million times. There are sources for royalty-free or royalty-cheap music out there. Check em out
Angelo’s is the best, followed very closely by John’s roast pork. Angelo’s does everything to perfection. Their roll is amazing.
What kind of food they sell at ishkabibel??
UA, you ever eat at Whitehouse in AC?
I actually dig the bag from Geno's, has the same color scheme as the Flyers.
what would be the best cheese steak place in philly?
Hey UA if you want a top 3 Cheesesteak in and out of the Philly area try Curly's comfort foods in Levittown, PA. Trust me you will not be disappointed!
Just trying to figure out what rating the bag has to do with the food???
You're going to need to take a actual bite of both if you want to accurately judge either of these cheese steaks.
Pat’s (not Patsuz) looks way better.
Aww, leave poor UA alone!...Patsuz🤣🤣🤣
@@danielschear556 I still like UA-zuz channel. 😆
@@RealWallyGator What's not to like?!🤗
Both are honestly terrible, but Pat's is less terrible.
disclaimer: I'm not a PA resident and I strongly believe cheesesteaks should be American cheese. (all other alterations are fine, just no wiz or overpowering provolone!)
Pat's - 4/10
Geno's - 2/10
Need to make another trip to Philly as I feel like I barely scratched the surface of the Cheesesteak game.
Right American cheese on a Philly all day
Mild prov isn't overpowering, that's what everybody uses. Sharp prov only goes on a roast pork.
Angelo’s is like our tacos el gordo in San Diego. And I guess Katz in NY
UA Jim's Steaks on South is back open. They reopen yesterday.
Like Lafayette vs. American Coney in Detroit
I understand where you're coming from. As a cheesesteak fan, I want a top-notch sandwich.
Love Jim’s of South Street!! The Best!!
Back in the 70s, when you needed something hot and greasy after drinking all night, these two spots were really the only game in town. That's how they became so well known. Today, many choices -- Angelo's and John's are top tier.
I Would go to Jims South Street but haven't been in a while and have never been to Angelos .
I think a tourist trap series would be fun.
D Alessandros cheesesteak is elite
I can't with Pat's or Geno's. I wouldn't tell anyone visiting not to try them, but they're mid at best, in my opinion. Are you still in Philly? Jim's Steaks on South just reopened this week! I'm not saying they're the best, but I used to live across the street, and they're my favorite. Have you reviewed Donkey's Place in Camden/Medford yet? It is a tad different from the traditional (the roll), but it is so good. Anthony Bourdain's favorite!
As an Asian immigrant, please do not refer to melted cheese as "slimy" as that is extremely disrespectful.
As a Birds Fan UA.. and physically being in Philly .. the Genos packaging is paying homage to the FLYERS ! Lets Go 🦅!!
Ive heard from a Pats fan the jerseys mike is right there with the tourists trap
Lived in downtown Philly for a few years, between Pats and Genos, Pats hands down, at least it's half decent, Geno's sandwiches are terrible IMHO, they don't even chop up their meat.
But my personal favorite downtown Philly location is either Jim's on South Street or Tony Luke's
Totally agree UA. I also had both, one after the other and Pats was a lot better. (Geno’s is not good)
Totally agree with you my friend. Pats all the way.
Next window for steaks. Like he’s not standing next to the other guy at the window.
