Trying ST. LOUIS BBQ! Is Sugarfire Smoke House Worth The Hype?

- St. Louis barbecue, particularly St. Louis style ribs, are well known by barbecue aficionados. The grilled and saucy red St. Louis rib has made its way onto many menus across America, not just BBQ joints, I recall Boston Market offering a St. Louis rib at one point in my childhood. There are even some food historians that believe the barbecue rib was invented in St. Louis in the first place! I went to college in St. Louis so I was back visiting my alma mater for a few days, but I knew I could not leave St. Louis without trying and reviewing some St. Louis BBQ restaurants!
When it comes to the best BBQ in St. Louis, many will reference Pappy's in St. Louis as the best. St. Louis' Pappy's ribs are famous, and were even awarded the best ribs in America by I believe the Food Network! But I have been hearing many great things about Sugarfire Smoke House. The biggest BBQ chain in St. Louis, Sugarfire Smokehouse has been getting rave reviews ever since it opened in 2012. Many claim it is the best barbecue joint in St. Louis, even better than Pappy's! We will find out together if this St. Louis BBQ restaurant is all it's cracked up to be!

Never been to St.Louis but I lived in Central Texas for 38 years. I took Amtrack to Cincinnati with a stop in Chicago. The diner car had St. Louis style ribs. OMG was I blown away! The sauce (which I never touched before) was breathtakingly delicious. The Amtrack servers were rightly proud! Way to go St. Louis!
That’s my favorite way to cook ribs. Literally so damn good!! Glad you enjoyed them!
Pappy's Smokehouse was my best BBQ place when I was in St. Louis!
Missourian here. Sugarfire varies a LOT by location. If you're eating in St. Louis proper, it's quite good. The ones in the suburbs... not so much.
alot of food and amounts of food ny dosent have that 20 dollars
It's horrible. It taste like hotdogs
I totally disagree! The one in U. City? Olivette? (which is the original location) is marginally better than the one in St. Louis proper.
OPEN YOUR EYES BRO! SO UGLY IT LOOKS!!!!
Good point. Some chains like In N Out make it their life's mission to maintain quality control but others...such as Flame Broiler is infamous for how inconsistent each franchise location is compared to the other. But then again they are actually different business models. You have one family owned corporation and one franchise owned by many owners.
I eat at sugar fire all the time; I used to be the personal trainer of the pit master when they first opened up years ago; he would always bring me burnt ends and ribs lol. Best customer ever.
Congratulations UA on putting in the necessary work to achieve your dream I'm enjoying watching your growth good job man
Thank you! It was a lot of hard work and perseverance. Gonna keep at it though, hopefully the best is yet to come!
@@uaeats I discovered your channel in July right after my dog died and I was just watching a lot of CZcams trying to keep my mind busy. You were under 30k subscribers at the time. Keep what your doing up since I've became aware of your channel you've increases by almost 66% that should tell you that your work is paying off. It may take a while but you'll achieve your goal with this. Just stay focused and continue to polish your craft. Venturing out from your neck of the woods is key though so the fact you're doing that is awesome and I believe the key to your channel. I was aware of the Native American restaurant you went to in Denver but that was because I saw it featured on the travel channel maybe a decade ago. Everyone goes to the same places over and over expanding your viewers horizons I believe is a GREAT move on your part good luck
@@scottgollahon3681 Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I'm also sorry to hear about your loss. Yep, steak and pastrami tend to be good "safe" video topics for my channel, but I still want to mix things up here and there. Even if other topics don't get as many views (at least at first) I still want to showcase a diverse selection of cuisines. I want to use my platform to spread awareness of these foods and also prevent the channel from getting stale.
Hi. I had started watching you at 14,000 subscribers. I wondered why you did not have more. Congratulations on your growth.
@@uaeats thank you for the condolences UA good luck with everything
Take a shot every time he says WHY DON’T WE
I’ve posted that every time. We are in agreeance. (I’m drunk!)
UA once again a great review the variety of foods you show is very unique and stands out above the rest , keep up the good work
My nephew, a life-long St. Louisan, says that Salt & Smoke is his favorite, followed by Sugarfire.
Yet another great video. I was one of your first 1000 subscribers. Im loving watching your channel growing. Keep it up dude. You should come to Baltimore since you live a couple states away. So many great places to eat.
Sugarfire is pretty good, but Hendrick's BBQ in St. Charles, MO (just outside of STL) is mind bogglingly delicious.
ITS JUST A SALAD! Please make a t-shirt with that and an image of a Cesar. Loving the videos!
Yeah that was probably the worst thing I've heard from a place that sells food.
Great review UA, you'll be hitting 50K subs very soon. Those ribs looked great, I wish you had tried that cornbread I saw on your table.
As a local Saint Louisan I’ve always ignored the Honey Badger sauce based on description alone but I think you just converted me 🐝 🦡
So many posts lately. Thank you. Always enjoy your content!❤
I watch your videos while I eat lunch every day at work. Almost running out of content lol!
Oh man! I love that you stopped here!
Great vid UA, looking forward to your Pappy's review, never had either, but it looked great.
really hope your channel blows up. really enjoy your content!
Awesome review UA. Live in Stl and never tried the Ribs, Brisket, or Mac & Cheese from Sugarfire so can’t wait to check it out! Thanks man
The beans are amazing as well
I stopped by there during a road trip from Florida to Minnesota, definitely a pretty good place when it comes to chain BBQ.
i really like Hill Country on 30 west 26th imo the BEST BBQ i had in NYC the DRY AGED BEEF SHOULDER is just insane highly recommend anything on the menu
Can’t wait for the next review!
Born and raised there.
Those ribs looked great. I agree, if the rib is good do you really need the sauce? While the ribs were tender, I remember Myron Nixon saying he does not want the meat to fall off the bone, literally. Meat closest to the bone is like the oil between a shrimp shell and the meat, full of flavor., You should have to gnaw the last shreds off the bone to really get the best of the rib, and those ribs looked perfect. I don't personally care for Southern eggy Mac and Cheese. Potato salad and coleslaw, or maybe collards would have been great. although brisket is Texas not Southern and perhaps need something different. People don't realize how far Southern culture penetrates the Mississippi valley. In Illinois, Springfield is more than half Southern, as is Indianapolis in Indiana.
Thanks for doing a video on stl bbq, sometimes can be forgotten on the bbq scene. I live in the metro east and while I’m usually not a fan of chain bbq, Sugarfire is consistent in their quality of bbq. Can’t wait for your video on Pappys
For sure! Stl is not talked about much anymore in the BBQ world but anyone who loves BBQ ribs is eating a BBQ style that originated in stl
17:29 are you ok sir? 😝😝😝
Ik his facial expressions always make me confused 😂😂😂
You rock, UA. Great post. The employee that helped you had such nice energy. I would definitely check this out if I was in the area. 😊 god this RIBS 😩
i would cook those ribs more i never eat uncooked meat risk of illness
Go to salt and smoke in STL!!
👍🏻 UA keep up the great work. Robert
Nextime when in St. Louis try the St. Louis style ribs ! Not the baby backs ! But there both tasty 👍
You got a good gig. Keep it up.
Be at 50k very soon! Love it
Hey UA! I am from STL and had no idea you studied here! Now you’re eating at my favorite restaurant! This has made my week! So cool and enjoy!
- Tony and Jasmin! Big Fans!
Love the review had barbecue tonight lol
I love your eyes how they squint! It’s like Mark Wiens when he loves something- and he kind of leans back and closes his eyes, that’s what reminds me of when you love something. Great job!! From an Aussie fan 🇦🇺
Washington University in St Louis?
That’s my favorite part of the brisket it’s called the deckle it’s attached atop the very lean and usually dry flat part of the brisket the deckle has the fatty part of the brisket .
Reasonable prices but wish they gave more meat.
UA you're the man!!
Hey UA, love your videos. Can you do some reviews of mexican/carribean food and boba spots in NYC?
Hey great video🎉 what camera are you using ?
I currently live in Alexandria, VA but when I go back to the STL area I usually eat at SugarFire (I think at the location you visited). I love it too. Others like Pappy's, or Bogarts, or Adam's are good too but SugarFire is usually where I go. (Pappy's often has a long line.)
Check out Salt and Smoke next time you’re in town newer but really good.
That mac and cheese looks exquisite
Good Job on the mirroring 👍👍
Reds bbq in Ferguson St. Louis and Bob’s bbq in Dierberg grocery store in St. Louis, mo. and of corse if I’m ever cooking bbq it’s MY OWN😂😂!!😂😂 are also delicious.
Those ribs look amazing! Love good ribs!
Pastrami at Sugarfire is a special. They have it sometimes.
Gotta go to Salt and Smoke in the delmar loop is another good one
I just had Sugarfire ribs last night (and again today for lunch)! Very cool 😎
Back to back, you must be a big fan!
@uaeats leftovers ya know? 😋
I knew that Mac n Cheese was going to be good! I acrually like the way it looks, they way it should look.
You should try Hometown BBQ in Red Hook!
Agreed!
I love how intense your face gets when you really really love something. On one of your other videos the staff asked you if you were OK and you were just really enjoying that bite. Good video.
Hometown BBQ in Brooklyn has some great BBQ.
Thank you for the BBQ review. Personally, I as well, prefer eating ribs with no extra / added sauce after it is cooked. Just the seasonings, rubs, and flavors from the grill. Keep up the great work. I love your reviews.
Their turkey breast is so good too. You're making me want to go pick up some later. 👍🏼
They have a half dozen or so daily sides. They’re listed on the overhead hanging paper at the counter. The orange soda came from Excel, a local soda maker located on the Illinois side of the river. Ski soda is their most popular.
Which college did you go to? I went to Wash U in St. Louis ! I really enjoy your channel - keep it up!
Yep, the smoke ring looks perfect on those ribs and the brisket. Sugarfire started out as one location, and yeah it’s a chain, but strictly local in the St Louis metro. The Lou has great food!😎
It's not though. They have locations in in CO and IA.
@@rwiggly news to me!
Never thought you went to college in the Midwest. 👍
“Why don’t we….?” UA trademark catchphrase. You make us feel like we’re there with you. I try to eat healthy but once in awhile nothing like high quality bbq, steak and sides to get my mouth watering. Thanks for the honest reviews.
Sugarfire is pretty good. So is Pappy’s. My fave is the smoked tri-tip at Bogarts. The pies at Sugarfire are pretty good too.
Another great video. I would have tried the mac/cheese with a little Honey Badger sauce on it.
Looks a lot better than Elways Steakhouse
"It's just a salad!"
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@dickriggles942 "The sides are all different''😅😅
I agree with you not having a car on campus sucks, specially if you are not on a city campus. I was also at the mercy of my buddies.
Them rabs looked legit. Just like how I make 'em at home. St. Louis style rabs.
YUM!!!
😋😋😋😋😋
Safe Journey!
Yellowbird Blue Agave Sriracha!!!
Ayeee this location is right by house!!
That brisket looked amazing, but I'm surprised they didn't offer you lean or fatty, since that portion would have turned off people who don't appreciate the joys of liquid gold.
“Just close your eyes and open your mouth, why don’t we”
I live in Memphis...My 2 favorite StL restaurants when we go are Guidos on The Hill and Olympia Kebob House
I live in STL and I absolutely love Olympia.
@@BrettEPierce There is NO place in Memphis like it...
Wow they cheaped out on you lol they served 3 small pieces of brisket smh
Former St Louisan here.....have you ever tried 'The Best Steakhouse' across from the Fox Theater. It's not fancy at all but the food is amazing and reasonable!
Ribs look like how you describe a rib eye steak: a fat bomb.
UA ... your first bite of the brisket is almost X rated! Ha! Love your reviews. 😊
Neptune Smoke House from Ribs to Apps 🤤 they have a location in Red Bank too. Definitely catch it on a day the owners in the kitchen ⭐⭐⭐⭐. 💜
UA, please advise the Sugarfire location where you ate
As a BBQ enthusiast and making BBQ for 40 years, in my opinion it’s necessary to have some fat for the right flavor and texture, but that had too much fat for me. My favorite BBQ joint so far is Arthur Bryant’s in KC. Great beef brisket and a unique funky BBQ sauce, brick orange, grainy with no sweetness which I just love!
Cornbread pudding *is* kinda weird. I grew up eating it, so now I'm craving it, but certainly understand why some people find it off-putting. I've seen it made both wetter and dryer than the stuff in the video.
the coffee BBQ sauce is on point
Try Baileys BBQ in Orangeburg NY. Great BbQ platter and the corn souffle is incredible
My guy is smashing those ribs with no hesitation.😅
On the east coast. You have to go to Monroe's bbq Jacksonville Florida off highway ave. Only open Monday through Friday 11am till 3pm.
That looks like a great bbq place.
If you go to Charleston need to try Lewis BBQ
Your making me so freaking hungry 😅
Since you asked, Red white and que smokehouse in NJ has BBQ especially the brisket
Love this , made me go to the butcher to see if I could do the same . Thx once again
Hey!!!! You should check out some good pizza joints in the hill!
All you have to do is drink a whey protein shake when you get heartburn and it will go away and also heal your esophagus
I live within walking distance of the biggest Sugarfire location in Wentzville, Missouri. We have several other BBQ places in town (Duke's, Old Town Smokehouse, Bandana's) and each is a bit different. Sugarfire's locations vary slightly based on what that particular owner and their main cook prefer. After eating at five of their locations, I can say that they're all great. While I suppose they do fit the criteria of being a chain, it doesn't feel the same as a mainstream chain.
Fellow Wentzvillian here
Tim, have you tried John Brown BBQ in Long Island city? I’m by no means a bbq expert but I thought it was decent for the east coast. Let us know if you’ve tried it. It’s steps from queens borough station.
Gratz on not getting mugged in STL
Missourian reporting in, the main ones are way better than the more.... friendly locations
Love Sugarfire but it does vary by location. You hit probably their best location. Enjoy your time in St. Louis.
Great review UA, pls go to Kansas City - there is great BBQ🚀
really curious to hear your take on the St Paul sandwiches you find in the Chop Suey houses in St Louis yea its another name for Chinese restaurants only in St Louis and you won't find St Paul sandwiches anywhere else.
The ribs look good.
Go to Charleston SC and get Lewis BBQ and Hometeam BBQ
UA punching the table and shaking his head is enough said.
South Jersey BBQ.... try Fat Jacks in Williamstown / Sewell NJ
