  • Colorado mountain pie is a style of pizza most people are not familiar with. It's characterized by a very thick crust, which is braided and infused with honey. The crust is often eaten with more honey on the side for a quick and delicious impromptu dessert!
Now Colorado style pizza may be unique, but is it worth the hype? Is it all its cracked up to be or is it just means for the annals of history? We decide to try Colorado Denver style pizza and go to the source. Who invented Colorado Style Pizza? Who invented Colorado Mountain Pies? The legends say it originated at Beau Jo's.
Is Beau Jo's legit or is Beau Jo's a tourist trap? We drove from Denver to Arvada to find out if Colorado Mountain pies are worth the hype. Is Beau Jo's one of the best pizza in Denver? This is an episode you don't want to miss!

As a Colorado near-native (lived here most of my life), the original Idaho Springs location is the best Beau Jo's location. I've never tried the Arvada location, but have tried a few other (non-mountain) locations; from my experience, the lower-altitude locations didn't seem to have correctly adjusted the recipe for the lower elevation. That was years ago, so I would need to try again. IMO, the best way to experience Beau Jo's is to first do something up in the mountains (e.g. a day skiing in the winter, or hiking a fourteener in the summer), and then having a pizza at the Idaho Springs location. CAN'T BE BEAT!

It is interesting you note the similarities with Pizza Hut and Dominos. I do not know if they get their cheese from Leprino Foods (Denver based company) but 85% of others do so.
Leprino supplies cheese to 85% of the pizza market, including Pizza Hut, Domino's, Little Caesars, Papa John's, Hungry Howie's, Tombstone, Tony's, Jack's, and Digiorno. Their cheese and products are also used by Hot Pockets, Stouffer's, Smart Ones, and other products used in Yoplait yogurt, Pillsbury Toaster Strudel, and baby formula. Leprino is the US's largest exporter of lactose.

I worked at a Pizza Mfg. Plant and am a "Pizza Making Hobbyist." I make PIZZA HUT PAN PIZZA "clones," only better! I make my pizzas in a cast iron griddle. The pizza in this video reminds me of one from my hometown, Wheeling, IL and a business called Wa-pa-ghetti's. They formed the edges of their crust like this one, in big balls that served as handles when one ate the slice. Delicious AND VERY filling! 😋

As a "Chicagoan", I really like Beau Jo's.
But I've only been to Idaho Springs.
Would I say that Beau Jo's is better than my favorite Chicago area thin, thick or deep dish?
    No.
But like thin crust, thick crust or deep dish, Beau Jo's mountain pie is a different style of pizza.
I go to Beau Jo's to have something different, that tastes good, that is decidedly Colorado.
Idaho Springs is a small mountain town and the restaurant is the old assayers office from over 100 years ago.
For me, it's an entire package. Food, location, ambiance, (my) mind set.
I recommend Beau Jo's to any friends that go to the Denver area, with the caveat, don't look for a life changing, best pizza you'll ever have. Go to experience something different.
Chicago and New York will always have their rivalry.
But any serious foodie, will try the other cities pizzas for the experience, not to prove their city is better than the other.
That's what Beau Jo's is to me.

The Idaho Springs location is, in my opinion, the only one to patronize. I appreciate the satellite locations but the original does it the best.

The idea is to go with several people and get the extra large pie, the crust is a much smaller percentage of the pizza. Eat a few pieces you have some honey on the crust, yada yada not bad but it's definitely not a "Colorado pie". In Colorado you should've had the green chili pork. Even this place had it on the menu.

It's a little out of proportion when you order a small, the rolled crust will overwhelm the rest of the pie. You need to order a large and then it's perfect. When I would go skiing with friends up in the mountains in the 70's, we would always stop at Beau Jo's In Idaho Springs on the way back to Denver and chow down on a couple of large pies. Of course, we would load it up with about 3-4 more ingredients!

First off, you're at the wrong one. Second, what makes it special is how strangely satisfying it is after a full day on the slopes and lastly... it's not even good anymore

One...If you go to New Mexico or Colorado and you don't get either the green or red chili with everything, you are messing up(it was on the menu I saw it ;)...Two how didn't you mix the honey and the chili powder on the pizza???

Been following UA eats for over a year now. I feel the videos are getting longer , should rather be around 12 mins long , that's the sweet spot. I don't have all day to watch the videos , so every minute counts for me.

The main thing about Beaujo's I've noticed is it's awful if you try to eat it cold the next day. The sauce gets bitter.
