  • I purchased this 1953 Ford F100 half ton pickup truck from a farm auction late this summer. It's got an OHV inline six engine and a 3 speed on the column transmission. It's in overall pretty decent shape for it's age. Lets see if we can get it running!

He has a flat V-8 I think, definitely has the parts. Why not put that in and change the 6 cylinder star to a V-8 on the grill. Then it could almost be original, though the VIN would not match a flathead 8. I sold my 53 panel truck just before the pandemic. It had the V-8 flathead, last year for them.

My friend had a '94 F150 straight 6 with a 5 speed. He blew the head gasket and decided to rebuild the whole motor, 2 months later the transmission went out so he had it rebuilt, 6 months after that he wrecked the truck. So he had a '53 F100 on his property in very good condition and we decided to take the engine and transmission from the '94 and swap it to the '53 and fix everything that needed fixing and we made a really nice truck out of that '53.

Its going to sound crazy but on stuck engines, I have had my best luck at freeing them up by filling the cylinders with vinegar and letting it sit for a day or 2 and it should break free fairly easy. The acid in vinegar actually eats the rust yet doesnt hurt the good metal. just be sure ro flush it out and change the oil and then oil the cylinders and turn it over again so its all coated with oil to prevent rust returning once its freed up. I do love Kroil and PB for a lot of things but I have found the vinegar is best for stuck engines, etc.

Ive got a 53 in my Hoard. Came from Chigago. Whoever did the body work bought their bondo by the 55 gallon drum. I junked the truck. The 6 cyl wasnt the original 223. Its a 61 223 block with a longer stroke crank from a 262. Makes it a 254. The engine is in excellent cond. So i swapped it into my 55 ford ranch wagon to replace the bad 223. Now ive got a real good 390 FE from a 63 T Bird that I think needs to be in the 55 wagon. Put a FE in that 53.

Sweet little truck, dude. Too bad about the little 6. The y block idea sounds good to me as a "throw back" or retro rod. You mentioned the burnt orange/white paint combo would be saved for a 56 ford. I dont remember the car, but my mom and dad had a 56 ford sunliner when they were newly married in 1961. It was orange and white. Hopped up 312. He traded it off in 1963. It had bullet holes in the trunk from a "police pursuit". Dad had a knack for trouble when he was young. The young man that bought the sunliner with the bullet holes in the trunk, ended up marrying my moms little sister. He drove it till it quit then parked it in a fence row where it eventually rotted away. Price for a t shirt? 2x for me as I too need the jack stands all the way up. I look forward to watching this build, whichever direction you take it
