Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

- A playthrough of Nintendo's 1993 platformer for the Super Nintendo, Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (as it appears in Super Mario All-Stars).
In this video I play through the entire game, including worlds 9 and A-D. Unlike the NES version, this one does not require you to play through the game eight times in a row to access the special worlds.
Like I said in my video of the All-Stars version of the first Super Mario Bros. ( • Super Mario Bros. (SNE... ), the All-Stars cart was great when it came out. Not only did it bring the original Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 stateside for the first time as "The Lost Levels," it also brought us complete 16-bit remakes of all four NES games on a single cartridge.
They looked and sounded great, and they felt pretty similar to the 8-bit originals. The controls and the physics aren't exactly the same, but they're close enough that you won't even notice after a level or two.
The Lost Levels is thankfully much easier this time. The changes made to the physics in the SNES game make it a more forgiving of a game - certainly not a bad thing if you've experienced the fangs of the original. And I love how weird it is that the intro sounds like Mr. Roger's theme song.
If you'd like to see the other versions of the game, here you go:
Super Mario Bros. 2 (Famicom Disk System):
• Super Mario Bros. 2 (F...
Super Mario Bros. Deluxe (GBC):
• Super Mario Bros. Delu...

NintendoComplete (www.nintendocomplete.com/) punches you in the face with in-depth reviews, screenshot archives, and music from classic 8-bit NES games!
This game is truly the bane of my existence! I am glad we got the Super Mario Bros 2 (USA) on NES, otherwise the true sequel we are looking now would have made everyone rage quit back then. This Japanese version of SMB 2 now referred as The Lost Levels is exactly what should have been than being 2. We know some Nintendo games with a sequel come up something different like Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link and Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest Il. I will try my very best to beat this game. It has been 23 years that I have not beaten it….I must buckle my gaming senses for this.
All-stars marked the first time many of us ever got to experience the "lost" Mario NES game, and this was a good way to play it, especially thanks to the toned down difficulty level.
@@CyberKnightProbably I was thinking about it :)
It's not toned down that much, but yes, it is true this release is the first ever we get to play Lost Levels, despite the remaster.
It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood. The song juxtaposes in irony the absurdist borderline-kaizo difficulty of the Lost Levels.
@@CyberKnightProbably I love that series
@Vegesther In the original version you have to beat it 8 times before you can get to A-1
One of the hardest Mario games of all time!!

My brothers and I loved Super Mario All-Stars when it came out. It was so cool to see some of our favorite games re-made with upgraded graphics and little extra touches. I still love the different Toads in each level of SMB1. And playing Lost Levels at the time was really cool. The fact that Luigi and Mario played differently was pretty awesome. I also thought the wind mechanic was pretty neat. I wish they would use that more often in Mario games.
True.
@Peter_Morris, I have this game Super Mario All Stars on Wii
@@derekcleland7867Same but I have it in SNES
Yep. I love this game. I still have my original cart. SNES was the golden era of gaming for me. I watched a play through of Doki Doki Panic a while back to see where Mario Bros. 2 or Super Mario USA as it was known in Japan got it’s roots. It’d be cool if Doki Doki Panic was released on NES Online.
19:35 Hit detection is a brilliant thing.
Right? Hahaha I totally got cheated out of points right there.
@@NintendoComplete and at 51:41.
Just think. If some producer at Nintendo of America back in '86 hadn't thought the original version of this game was too hard for American players, we wouldn't have gotten SMB 2 and all the iconic foes it added to later games. I'd rather die than live in a world without Shy Guys.
Great game and great memories playing it. 👍
One of the codifiers of Nintendo Hard. This was a novel addition to All Stars.
Somehow i had this game as kid and never knew about the extra levels must admit im excited to play these levels
0:23 that's some pretty depressing music for a Mario game😥😔
Won't you be my neighbor?
@@NintendoComplete heh. Why not😅
Que buenos tiempos que recuerdos exelente video
Also love that Super Mario All-Stars is available on the Nintendo Switch Online Service!!
You beast. You beat this absolute demon of a game.
The SNES version isn’t that hard
Haha ty. If you think this is hard though, you oughta try the original NES game 😱
@@NintendoComplete Perish the thought!
@@amso7169 To me, it was, but then again, I love games but have never been great at difficult games such as dark souls and the like
@@NintendoComplete You mean Famicom Disk Drive. That only came out in Japan.
This version of it was the first time I experienced The Lost Levels. I think Dunkey put it best when he said "This is the world's first troll game." I can see why Nintendo decided against releasing this in the US on the NES back when Super Mario 3 was right around the corner.
It's like Nintendo said "Oh, you think you're good at Super Mario Bros.? Why not put those skills to the test!"
Check out Grand Poo World.
This had to be one of the most difficult Mario originals back then, especially since its original 8-bit version was released only in Japan.
So many memories!
Yeah, this is an excellent challenge for expert Super Mario Bros players. I beat all through every level in my original copy as Luigi, too, though it is a real pain in the neck. The original FDS one wasn't very merciful, because you have to beat the game EIGHT freaking times to reach World A-D! This version, the one US got 1st time, I perfer this for slightly better balance and especially the remastered upgrade.
Playing this with Luigi is a lot better.
If you play this as Mario oh god good luck making those long ass jump gaps
@@bryanc1772 For sure. Luigi is just natural to me. After all, he is the better bro in Mario, anyway.
“Thank you Luigi but our princess is in another castle”
Plot twist: the toads are the culprits behind the abduction of the princess and bowser acts only as a cover
Well, I mean, just look at Bowser and look at Toad. Judging by their shapes, who do you think is more likely to get the royal roast beef's juices dripping in anticipation?
Toadstool: That au jus to you, bitch!
Oh my^^
I remember this game....
It may be hard (I never managed to finish it as a kid) but I still love this game, as well as Super Mario All-Stars in general.
If you want a good Mario game that is quite the challenge, I really recommand you this one.
I Love (SMB- ALL- STARS) How Did You Pass The Flag
🎶DADA-DA-DA-DA-DA-DA!!! POW!!!!!!!!🎶
Oh my God, I LOVE singing that part!!!! 😁
Hardest Mario Game Ever
Indeed, officially. Only thing even worse is the Super Mario Maker games with people intentionally making unplayable levels.
Arigato in 9-4 could've been translated to Thank You since this was translated to Lost Levels rather than Mario 2 in Japan.
Ugh... *THIS* game...
Better graphics and sound in this version, a useful save system making it a little easier... Still hate this game with a burning passion. Don't torture yourself with this. Just don't.
@Left Arm I fear for your sanity levels. Especially, after playing this 15 times lol.
I think the better tip would be don’t play this as Mario. It’s almost impossible as Mario especially against those precision jump areAs ( there are many of them)
With Luigi it’s a lot more bearable and fun
I actually like this game
Ah yes the game where Mario has heavy stone in his pockets and can’t jump high while Luigi has butter or ice on his shoes all the damn time with bearly any grip .
I choose Luigi all the time 😌
Awesome
Ugh... Those red piranha plants... They were the worst to me trying to time everything with those around
Bowser castle Bowser theme Bowser theme
Endings peace thank you luigi!
The kingdom is saved! Now try a more difficult quest...
Thank you luigi for restoring peace to our
Kingdom hurrah to our hero Luigi!
This game isn't so bad once you get the hang of it, i think it's because for me personally it's very similar to Mario Forever, it feels like that game has more in common with this than the original mario bros, especially when it comes to physics, I really like playing this game even if it is hard, Playing as Luigi is kinda painful though but fun, but i prefer Mario since i am more use to him.
btw
37:33 that was an epic wall jump,
it saved you XD
Classic!!
buena aventura luigi buen video
DEATH SHROOMS !!!!!!!!!!
I tried this on the switch online member Version. And i failed so hard. But good Longplay.
What happens if you miss the vine in 8-2 at 40:49 that leads to the flagpole goal? What a crazy exit for a level, and dastardly placed invincibility star!
Iirc, if you miss it, you have to play through a really hard bit of the level until it loops back to try again.
@@NintendoComplete it leads to a bonus level which isn’t bad but it keep’s looping u until u find the secret exit
46:51 world 9 underwater bowser special
Final score: 1,274,450 points.
Lives remaining: 17.
I hate this game to DEATH. The extreme difficulty was the reason Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels was never released out of Japan, but I think even nipponic gamers went berserk playing it. I'm certain of that.
And this is absolutely nothing compared to the ragequit levels from Super Mario Maker 2.
Fireworks flagpole fireworks 🎆🎆 54:00
Why would anyone ever use Mario in this game lol
You don’t want a plumber with heavy stones in his pocket
I take the plumber with butter on his shoes the whole time
Yes I mean Luigi
I hate how bullet bills move their arms for a propulsive effect in this.
how to play as Luigi?
When I beat it and hit continue it brought me straight to level A instead of 9-1 like it did for you. Why would that be?
You get locked out of world 9 if you use any kind of warp zone (yes, even the ones that take you backwards).

I cant find a SNES Rom for this. only NES
Lost Levels wasn't released separately for the SNES, only as a part of Super Mario All Stars.
Go sucyuigi gogogo they sucy and luigi for quest ★★★★★★
Why are you playing on the PAL version over the Northern American version? Post2: The graphics *clearly* prove that this is the PAL version and *not* the Northern American version Post3: ignore this comment, I thought graphics where different between Collection & NA versions & PAL
What makes you think that? This is the US version.
Over Horizon when??
1991 iirc
@@NintendoComplete I mean when you gonna post it? :)
@@movieclipz5034 I know what you meant. I was being cheeky. It's in the lineup, don't worry.
