Super Mario Bros. (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

  • A playthrough of Nintendo's 1993 platformer for the Super Nintendo, Super Mario Bros. (as it appears in Super Mario All-Stars).
In this video I play through both loops of the game. As in my playthroughs of the other versions, I do the first run going through every single level. The second (beginning at 41:13) shows the shortest route through the game using warp zones.
The All-Stars cart was great when it came out. Not only did it bring the original Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 stateside for the first time, but it also brought us complete 16-bit remakes of all four NES games on a single cartridge.
(If only they still invested this level of effort! *Glares at the lame ass Skyward Sword HD remaster and Super Mario 3D All-Stars*)
They looked and sounded great, and they felt pretty similar to the 8-bit originals. The controls and the physics aren't exactly the same, but they're close enough that you won't even notice after a level or two.
(And the Bowser fight music in this version is sick!)
If you'd like to see any playthroughs I've done of other versions of the game, here are a few links:

I absolutely love the minor little details and extra animations added to this remake, especially all the Toads in the bags and how their number matches the World number. Turns out remakes can work, if the original is simply focused on making a fun and functional game while the remake adds all these personality-laden flourishes that they didn't have the time or technology to pull off in the original.
If only more remakes were like this. I wouldn't automatically groan every time a new reboot or remake is over-hyped to the moon and back--usually by pissing off the old fans on social media while pandering to a small minority of detractors who will probably not give the remake any money either way...

@@rhodesdrakethenieliii3209 Um, I meant “minorities” as in people who don’t even like the game being remade/remastered, yet complain about the game because social media doesn’t require proof that you’ve actually consumed the media you want to complain about before doing so.
But I suppose your point is right, too-while it’s just extremely minor changes, it did annoy me greatly to learn the Chrono Cross remaster censored some lines of dialogue for the extremely rare case that a younger, more sensitive gamer would be interested in playing a crusty low-poly PS1 game that came out before they were even born-especially an old Squaresoft game that is hardly as well-known as Final Fantasy VII, great as it was. Doesn’t help that the remaster somehow runs significantly worse at times even on a PS5 compared to the already-laggy original, ensuring that remote possibility has even less of a chance of happening…

@@JeffreyThrash So that's what you meant, I see now. Also... Chrono Cross wasn't the only thing that censors something, the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy on SNES did it too with changing Jaquio's blood from red to green

    • @JeffreyThrash
      @JeffreyThrash Před rokem +1

@@rhodesdrakethenieliii3209 I don't think the SNES Ninja Gaiden trilogy is quite the same thing because it came out so soon after the original games and in an era where Americans censored EVERYTHING Japanese, far more so than they do now, and as a 2D SNES game it has no doubt aged much better than any early 3D PlayStation game, so I can imagine some '90's-obsessed kid at least illegally downloading a ROM of it.
Also, Resident Evil 4 VR may be a more significant modern example of censoring for the sake of people who would have zero interest in that game in the first place. Apparently they decided that 18-year-old Ashley unsuccessfully flirting with Leon at the end (and of course other remotely-sexual moments in this M-rated video game) might trigger people, but were not the least bit worried about how some people would react to having their heads slowly sawed off by a chainsaw in first-person VR.

I can't stand the feel of the game, overall. It feels like a controller profile from an emulator was just plastered over top of the old controls.
Charging full price for it, they could've at least tried to integrate the new controls so they felt intuitive and natural, even if that meant reprogramming big chunks of the game to make it work. I'd probably be a bit more forgiving if it was a $30 budget release, but it wasn't.

Yes, all 3 games on there are faithful ports... But my *GOD,* they really didn't do much else to make it the definitive way to play these games! Hell, *_"Super Mario Galaxy"_* still has motion controls... for a console that could've *_easily_* made twirling around a simple button press. Same goes for the Pull and Launch Stars, too.
Granted, you could argue that the original All-stars was just as lazy. But, at least they updated the graphics, sound, the controls are smoother, and the save system is a really nice addition. It wasn't a *_whole lot,_* but it's more effort than the 3D one... and *DEFINITELY NOT* worth the *$60 PRICE TAG!* Really!? Why not $20 for all that lazy editing, guys?

I like both, but still prefer the originals too & same with the music, but the new added music when battling Bowser is cool tho.

Awesome collections like this make me wonder what the fuck happened to Nintendo when it came to remakes
I made a wise decision not even considering 3D All-Stars

I am reading your description and frankly I would disagree with you on the skyward sword remaster considering the large number of qol tweaks made. I could probably offer a long tangent on why Nintendo wasnt really lazy in producing Super Mario 3D All Stars but thats for another place

I know that's just the demo, but really, eh, we've all made mistakes, some VERY embarrassing. I've beaten Mario 3 a few times in the past, and roughly 15 years afterward, I then managed to get myself killed on the VERY FIRST GOOMBA because I'd forgotten how the running and jumping physics felt.
Yet 5 years after my previous playthrough of the original Dead Rising, I can still do a full Saint run in my sleep, now from Level 1 to boot. We all apparently git gud and un-gud in very strange ways.
