Great year for music so far.
The new Vampire Weekend album is incredible, and is gonna be difficult to beat for my AOTY (5 stars). Also really looking forward to the new Lemon Twigs album coming out May 3rd, I’m anticipating it being my favorite album from them, all 4 singles are great.
The three albums I have really liked so far this year are The Smile , Ride & The Church. Anticipating ... The Cure .. Anticipating but not expecting ! ✌️
the smile album , just didnt hit me, is baseball season over yet lol
@@bengalgangsterYankees are 10-2 !!
The Smile album sort of breezes along in the background, couldn't really get into it. Agree with you on Ride and The Church (which came out of nowhere). I don't think the new Church is quite as strong as last year's The Hypnogogue but it was definitely a pleasant surprise.
My favourites so far this year are -
Slift, Black Sky Giant, The Messthetics/James Brandon Lewis, Big Scenic Nowhere, Chelsea Wolfe, Mary Timony, Mary Halvorson, The Smile, The Chisel, Vijay Iyer, Willi Carlisle, Monkey3, Lucifer, and Slower.
Looking forward to Nick Cave, High On Fire and Shellac.
Really liking the Adrienne Lenker album, new discovery, thank you Jason! Reminds me of Laura Marling so in the absence of anything from her this will do nicely! 👍🏻

Seven Davis Jr. - Stranger Than Fiction [Jan 5]
Worst album of the year so far, by a long shot!
Weird. You have a couple of my absolute favorites (Last Dinner Party, Friko) so far, but also two of my least-favorites (Sprints, Katherine Priddy).
I have listened to two of the mentioned albums. Cheekface, 2.5 stars; The Last Dinner Party, 4.5. I'm at 30 albums for the year so far, which puts me on pace to eclipse last year's total by the end of this month. Yay.
Thanks boooyzzz….particularly enjoying the Tyler Ramsey recommendation and more to check out…..Stirling stuff boyyyzzz….keep up the good work…..(the commentator formally known as bazzledazzle)….
Yes! Also loving the Cheekface and Ducks Ltd. albums. I'll be checking out a few of the others you guys mentioned. Never heard of RIP Dunes or Friko before.

Of those you mentioned that I have heard, was not impressed with The Smile or Glass Beach albums (2.5 each), Last Dinner Party was well-done drama pop, just not something I can connect with (3.0)
Nice prog list here!
I agree on the Glass Beach and The Smile- overrated IMO. I tried a few times, just too much going on and hard to listen to at times.
Dirt Poor Robin's! Don't know The bardic Depths but maybe I should?
Thus far been loving new stuff by
Middle Kids
Future Islands
Waxahatchee
Last Dinner Party
Too soon to call on new Vampire Weekend but it’ll probably bubble to the top
My Top Picks So Far...
1. Daniel Romano - Too Hot to Sleep (early Romantics meets Ramones meet Raspberries)
2. Sundrifter - An Earlier Time (space rawk for the eclipse)
3. IDLES - TANGK
4. Mary Timony - Untame the Tiger
5. The Thing - The Thing Is
6. Black Crowes - Happiness Bastards
7. Khruangbin - A LA SALA
Thanks for this video. I'll check out Grey DeLisle for sure. Need to add Sarah Jarosz "Polaroid Lovers". Not her best, little over-produced, but 5 or 6 great songs.
Definitely a little overproduced. Sounds like a lot of other stuff right now. - Joe
1) Wall of Eyes
2) Only God Was Above Us
3) Cowboy Carter
4) Loss of Life
5) Where's My Utopia
6) Saviors
7) I Got Heaven
I'm really looking forward to the new Wallows album "Model". The new Pearl Jam album will hopefully live up to the hype. A lot of good stuff coming in the near future; several of my current and old faves releasing Q2 2024 - (Taylor Swift, twenty one pilots, Cage the Elephant, Kings of Leon, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa)
Fingers crossed MJ Lenderman's new solo album comes out sooner than later; it's supposed to be dropping sometime this year. So far I've really been digging new music this year.

Excellent albums as your favorites so far. 🎶💜💜
Ironically, I just started Sheryl Crow's latest album yesterday. She released it 2 weeks ago. I avoid new music like the plague, but I'll try to check 2024's stuff out.
Ducks Ltd sound like the 80s group McCarthy - the other better pics here for me are RIP Dunes and The Last Dinner Party. the implications call to mind Mark Fisher's 2014 book Ghosts of My Life: Writings on Depression, Hauntology and Lost Futures
So far I've got one 4.5 for Liquid Mike and then some 4s for Chelsea Wolfe, Friko, Heems, Kali Malone, and Tapir! Not an album, but getting a lot of spins out of the new Nourished By Time EP.
I'm going to have to dig into some of the titles mentioned as well as some on other lists. There are a few artists I didn't know had released albums this year, like Mali Obomsawin. Except the first few I haven't spend enough time to rank them, so this list is pretty random.
The Bevis Frond-Focus On Nature
Rosali-Bite Down. Check out her 2021 LP, No Medium. When I first heard her I thought of Aimee Mann with Crazy Horse. She played about 20 minutes from me tonight but I couldn't get it together in time to get to the show.
David Nance and Mowed Down-S/T. Many of the members are also in Rosali's band.
Adrienne Lenker-Bright Future. Never gave Big Thief a listen, so I guess I'll have to give them a try.
Mary Timony- Untame The Tiger
SOMA-Burning Is Learning
Lætitia Sadier-Rooting For Love
Mary Halvorson-Cloudward
We March-The Dirty Curly Selections
Bardo Pond-Volume 9
Marry Waterson/Adrian Crowley-Cuckoo Storm
Sam Lee-Songdreaming
Hannah Frances-Keeper Of The Shepherd
The Smile, MGMT and The Last Dinner Party have put out my 3 fav albums of the year so far, but I'm guessing Vampire Weekend and Adrianne Lenker are going to be up there soon too, when I get a listen. Stuart
Pretty well all the albums Jason mentioned on his main list are in my top albums except Ducks Ltd, I think. I still liked that but it would fall outside my top. Sam Evian is my favourite and pretty darn close to 5 stars, I absolutely love it.
Another album I liked a lot is Katy Kirby's Blue Raspberry but otherwise everything else was mentioned.
Agree on Daniel Romano’s stuff becoming more predictable. I loved Modern Pressure and Finally Free, and the Outfit stuff has been a step down. Which of his other records do you recommend? I haven’t listened to the first 4 or 5.
His classic country phase is my favorite. If I've Only One Time Askin' is probably the best of those but Come Cry With Me and Sleep Beneath the Willow are also great. A lot of the stuff he did during the pandemic is cool too: Visions of the Higher Dream, Content to Point the Way... Also his full album cover of Dylan's Infidels is killer. Oddly enough, Finally Free might be might least favorite thing he ever did.
AOTY so far for me is Basement Sparks by Marc Valentine. (I’m a fan of power pop what can I say 😂) It’s Sorted by cheekface is number 2
Slift is a great pick!
That was the first album I got in 2024. I'm not a prog rock fan, but because Slift add elements of space rock and even noise, I can mostly get on board. A light 4 stars, IMO.
I dont really follow new music but I see that Boldy James had an album. So I'm guessing its the best album so far.
liquid mike - paul bunyan's slingshot. AOTY so far
Loved that album… I thought it was better than his album last year
Can't get past the lead vocals by Waxahatchee. Just sounds off key to me. Big Big Train (Likes of Us), The Smile (Wall of Eyes), Future Islands (People Who Aren't There Anymore) are probably my favorites for Q1. The Beyonce album is so overrated for my ears. Mediocre and definitely not a country album. Last Dinner Party shows potential but spotty collection of songs. Expect big things on the next album. These are my favorite albums of Q1.
1. Big Big Train - Likes of US
2. Future Islands - People Who Aren't There Anymore
3. Middle Kids - Faith Crisis Part 1
4. Elbow - Audio Vertigo
5. The Smile - Wall of Eyes
6. Close Talker - The Sprawl
7. The Church - Eros Zeta and The Perfumed Guitars
8. Mia Dyan - Tender Heart
9. Paula Cole - Lo
10. Lorrena McKinnitt - The Road Back Home
11. Ride - Interplay
12. New Dad - Madra
13. Martyn Joseph - This Is What I Want To Say
14. Sam Lee - Songdreaming
15. Bruce Hornsby - Deep Sea Vents
16. San Fermin - Arms
17. Kacey Musgraves - Deeper Well
18. Alejandro Escovedo - Echo Dancing
19. Gruff Rhys - Sadness Sets Me Free
20. Steve Hackett - Circus & The Nightwhale
Love that Elbow album!
guess you loved Elbow album so much you have it here twice!
@@sammo2560 ha ha ...fixed it.
New Dad cool
For me I have loved the following so far
Ed Harcourt’s El Magnifico, like Jason said he is back! Love the melodies especially and the production sounds so good!
Judas Priest record is pretty great, love that they still sound hungry after all these years.
SPRINTS’ Letter To Self is a lively and noisy record, seems to be a theme at the moment for bands coming out of Dublin.
Ryan Adams’ Star Sign sounds to me something like approaching to a return to form, really like the songs and his voice here, it’s not perfect but then not many things are. Much better than the other 3 albums he released on the same day…
I actually think Sword & Stone is the best of the Ryan Adams albums but I don’t have any of them higher than 3.5 -Jason
@@TastesLikeMusic Sword & Stone is a close second…nearly 4 stars for me, just think it is another similar sounding record he has been stuck on for a while now. Star Sign has that acoustic element that I love and I just think the songs are slightly better, so it gets the 4 stars at the moment. By the end of the year it will probably change! Somewhere in those 4 records there is one possible 5 star album and there’s the problem with Ryan Adam’s at the moment I think. The Ed Harcourt record is the only thing that possibly could get 5 stars but at the moment it’s a high 4.5 😊
If 2024 ended today, it would still and already be a better year for music than 2023. 2023 was baaaaad.
💯
Oh my 400? how will I catch up? “A white guy trying to do R&B”, sounds dangerous 😂 will start with Usher. LC Gershwin award show for Elton was highly entertaining
The vaccines. Pick up full of pink carnations is a great album. Short and punchy. Like it a lot.
That album reminded me of Imagine Dragons.
One of the most purely fun albums of the year. Not terribly substantial but it bops along beautifully.
I don't see this year as good or solid, and neither were the past years. Some albums are good, a few are very good but the majority is mediocre. And mediocre is worse than bad, I think. I have not heard a very good album yet but I'll keep listening and hoping.
Idon'tlikeCountry.
Related, I want to apologize for citing Professor of Rock as a guide after 3 episodes I was OD ing😂 Andy Edwards is quite different, ranked Pink Floyd most over rated band ever, ballsy
1. Judas Priest - Invincible Shield
2. Achelous - Tower of High Sorcery
3. Saxon - Hell, Fire and Damnation
4. The Obsessed - Gilded Sorrow
5. Traveler - Prequel to Madness
6. The Black Crowes - Happiness Bastards
7. Mega Colossus - Showdown
8. Scavenger - Beyond the Bells
9. Iron Curtain - Savage Dawn
10. Ironbound - Serpent's Kiss
11. Midnight - Hellish Expectations
12. Bruce Dickinson - The Mandrake Project
13. Blaze Bayley - Circle of Stone
14. The Rods - Rattle the Cage
15. Witchorious
16. Professor Electric - In Shambles
My favorite So far this year album
1. The Last Dinner Party Prelude To Ecstasy
2. Waxahatchee Tigers Blood
3. Everything Everything Mountainhead
4. vampire weekend only god was above us.
5. the smile wall of eyes
6. future islands people who aren't there anymore
Please get on Audio Vertigo - Elbow. Album of the year so far imo.
I listened to it. Pretty sure I gave it 3.5 stars. Sounds like Elbow but didn’t really grab me.
Great album.
@@TastesLikeMusic Fair enough. For me it’s back to their brilliant pre Seldom Seen Kid period and can’t stop looping it. Cheers for getting back!
@@TastesLikeMusic I'd give it another lesson. It's a huge step up compared to most of their catalogue. The drums take it to another level.
Thought it sounded terrible. This is exactly the kind of smooth, overproduced prog rock that I can't stand.
The Cheekface record is really bad, I’m sorry. It didn’t do anything for me, and I found it very..just..annoying. Way too nerdy and “humorous” for me.
It sounds like a far lesser version of They Might Be Giants to me. I don't mind "nerdiness" in music, but I need it to be creative. Cheekface come across as very one-dimensional.
@@echosmyron1278*extremely* one-dimensional!
